Captain Edward O. “Bud” Shaw * Class of 38 Captain Edward Shaw attended WSC until his enlistment in the U.S. Naval Air Corps. In 1941 and became Spokane’s first “ACE” of World War II Bud began his flying career as a “grease monkey” at Felts Field International Airport, wiping the grease off of airplanes after they landed, for little or no pay until they finally put him on the payroll. 23 year old Lieutenant Shaw is officially credited with the downing of 13 enemy planes with the “Hellhawks” in the Bouganville Campaign in the Solomon Islands during WWII.”. During the 300 hours of combat flying, only once did he get a couple holes shot in his wing tanks. This he modestly attributes, not so much as his flying ability as to the healthy regard to in which Japanese pilots held the Corsair as a deadly fighter. In four separate engagements he shot down eight enemy planes. Married WVSH sweetheart Barbara Jacobson, December 25, 1943. Captain Shaw was transferred to the 213 th Marine Fighter Squadron, in Mojave, CA., where in Dec. 11, 1944 he was killed as a test pilot when the plane he was flying failed to pull out of a power dive and crashed. His Commander Capt.Thomas, said “No matter the situation we might have been in, he always had a grin or a chuckle when it was over. I have never known, or hope to know a person who was more considerate of others. Because he was an engineering officer, he not only flew the planes, but he knew the peculiarities of every plane in the squadron. He was a great favorite with the ground crews, and he loved to sit and talk over others’ problems, regardless of whether they were young green pilots, ground crew, chiefs, mess sergeants, or others connected with the outfit.” His body was returned to Spokane by an escort of 17 Corsair Fighter planes.
