1. Indian Railways has named Train 18 as Vande Bharat Express
Minister of Railways & Coal, Shri Piyush Goyal announced the name Vande Bharat Express for Train 18,
acknowledging its made-in-India status.
This train set has been manufactured by Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in the period of 18 months under
'Make in India' program.
Points to Remember
Vande Bharat Express is India's first semi-high speed train equipped with world class passenger
amenities.
It can achieve high speeds (max speed of 160 kmph) due to faster acceleration & deceleration and will
reduced journey time to 8 hours between New Delhi & Varanasi .
2. Union Minister Gadkari inaugurates Atal Setu in Goa
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated, 5.1-kilometer long “Atal Setu” bridge across river Mandovi in
Panaji, Goa.
It would be third such bridge to connect the state capital with North Goa.
The bridge is constructed by the GIDC (Goa Infrastructure Development Corporation) and engineering
and construction major Larsen and Toubro.
The link will decongest Panaji to a great extent, as approximately 66,000 vehicles enter the capital city
every day.
3. Southern Railway won number one for cleanliness
The Southern Railway has bagged the number one position for cleanliness in all the 17 railway zones in the
country.
This achievement was under the category of other than Premium Category trains in the recent Trains
Cleanliness Survey conducted by IRCTC on all India level.
The survey is conducted once a year to periodically monitor the progress of ‘Swachh Rail Swachh
Bharat’ mission.
Two private companies, IRCLASS Systems and Solutions Pvt. Ltd and IPSOS Research Private
Limited, were engaged to conduct the survey on behalf of IRCTC.
4. National Conclave on Technical Textiles at Mumbai
Ministry of Textiles will hold National Conclave on Technical Textiles on 29th January 2019 in Mumbai.
The event will also be a curtain raiser for TechnoTex 2019.
The conclave will be presided over by the Union Minister of Textiles, Smriti Zubin Irani.
Points to Remember
Technical textiles are textile material and products manufactured primarily for technical performance
and functional properties.
They find application in areas like agriculture, medical, infrastructure, automotive, aerospace, sports,
defence and packaging.
As per baseline survey of technical textile industry in India, there are around 2100 units manufacturing
technical textiles in the country.
5. Tata enters list of top 100 valuable brands
The ‘Tata’ brand has entered the list of Top 100 most valuable global brands, according to the Brand Finance
Global 500, 2019 report.
The report has been released at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Climbing from the 104th to the 86th position this year, Tata is the lone Indian brand in the Top 100.
The total value of Brand Tata increased 37 per cent to $19.5 billion in 2019 from $14.2 billion a year
ago.
6. Saina Nehwal wins Indonesia Masters 2019
Ace shuttler Saina Nehwal won her first Indonesia Masters title after three-time world champion Carolina
Marin limped out of the final due to a leg injury.
Marin was leading 10-4 in the first game at Jakarta when she developed an injury in the knee.
Saina had won a gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, a bronze at the Asian Games.
7. Velammal-AICF International Women Grand Master round-robin chess tournament to begins
The Velammal-AICF International Women Grand Master round-robin chess tournament begins in Chennai.
Six Woman International Masters from India will take on six foreign players including two woman
Grand Masters (VGM) in the tournament.
It is a novel initiative of All India Chess Federation which provide opportunities to the country's young
Women International Masters to obtain WGM norms in home conditions.
The Indian participants at the tournament are Aakanksha Hagawane, Saloni Sapale, P Michelle
Catherina, V Varshini, Divya Deshmukh and Chandreyee Hajra.
8. Djokovic beats Nadal to win his seventh Australian Open title
Novak Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal to win his 7th Australian Open Men's Singles title at Melbourn.
The resurgent world No.1 outplayed the second-ranked Nadal 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 in a largely one-sided match.
Points to Remember
In Women's Singles, Japan's Naomi Osaka clinched her maiden Australian Open Grand Slam Singles
title in Melbourne .
Osaka became the first Asian player to achieve the world number one ranking.
9. Kartik Sharma wins New South Wales men's Amateur Golf Championship
India's Kartik Sharma won the New South Wales men's Amateur Golf Championship in Australia.
Kartik notched up a magnificent win over Australia's Nathan Barberie in the scheduled 36-hole final to
emerge as champion.
He had been selected to represent Indian Golf Union for three events in Australia.
Kartik had also won the Indian golf union western India amateur golf championship 2018.
