A LETTER f r o m t h ePASTOR

And that is what He is doing. Yesterday, today and tomorrow, Jesus is at work doing just that – building His church. He’s not build-ing a building, mind you, but a people - a force, if you will. In fact, the Mes-sage translation puts it this way: “I will put together my church, a church so expansive with energy that not even the gates of hell will be able to keep it out.” And that is what Jesus has been doing here at Mendham Hills Com-munity Church for nearly thirty years. Pastors, staff and volunteers have not built this church, Jesus has. It is His work. Yet, no different than Adam in the garden, we are invited to work with God and to find purpose, joy and significance in playing our part. And what a work it has been here in Mendham and Chester, NJ! The obedience of a small band of believers in the 1980’s has left a legacy that endures. Their sacrifices, commitment, prayers, service and yes, their giving toward building has been returned thousands of times over by the fruit born of their ministry. You and I are the return on their investment. We are part of their legacy. I encountered Jesus like never before in this place; I was discipled through this church; and my children have been “trained up” by this force called Mendham Hills. And so, in some way, the baton has now been passed. Now it’s our turn to pray and serve, to sacrifice and commit ourselves to Jesus’ work in this place, and yes, to give toward its building. I am asking you as personally as I can to dream, to pray, to listen and to respond. I am asking you, on behalf of our beautiful church, to consider making a sacrificial investment in the building of Jesus’ Kingdom here -- not a gift or an offering, but an investment that will return to you and me the same thing it returned to those who came before us -- a legacy of changed lives, healed families, nurtured children and freed souls. God de-sires for us to have Great Expectations when it comes to building His church –- great expectations for Him and for us, and for what He is going to do in and through us in this place!

As you might know by now, our church has been a “missional” force for over a decade, “storming the gates” by sending hundreds of volunteers and hundreds of thousands of dollars to reach “the least of these” in “far off” places like the Guatemala City Garbage Dump; Waveland, Mississippi; and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, in addition to serving those in our local communities through our Grace House Guests ministry and Market Street Mission.

Now we are turning our eyes toward our neighbors as never before. As you have heard more than once, there are 92,962 people who live within one town of our church and have no real relationship with the living Jesus. We are called to be the church right here too -- a powerful force right where God has planted us.

To that end, our desire is to create space in our existing building to better facilitate this local ministry. For years we have struggled with the same two physical constraints. While our sanctuary can accommodate us right now and for some time into the future, we continue to experience very real and very significant crowding issues in two critically important areas -- our foyer and our children’s ministry space.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then there will be little left for me to say once you see the renderings. Suffice it to say that this campaign, if

successful, will result in an almost complete modernization of our entire building, the

addition of two new classrooms for our kids and a two-story glass children’s

ministry side entrance which will al-low better flow, passage and safety

for check-ins. (next page).

In addition, we will more than double our foyer space, creating, for the first time in the history of our church, an area where we can sit with our friends and neighbors, talking, relaxing, and sharing conversation over drinks served from a new cafe. These additions address two core ministry areas for us. There is little we do when we gather that is more important than spending time in real fellowship. And for those of us with kids, what is more important than creating an inviting, fun and exciting place where they can learn about Jesus? Just as importantly, what would speak to our community more than a building that communicates that their kids and their friendship are two of our core concerns?

God wants us to dream big when it comes to building His church – not necessar-ily in terms of the size or grandeur of the building itself, but of His power to use it as a tool in reaching our community. He wants us to raise our expectations of what He might do and how He might move if we would join Him in the great work of building His church. We believe that this Great Expectations campaign is helping us to do just that.

John

FinancialUpdate

We believe the plans are great, the need is real and the call is clear. But make no mistake, joining Jesus in the building of His church carries a cost. The truth is that there is nothing to which giving our time, energy, devotion, tal-ents, passion and money – yes, money – is worth more than the local church. Nothing has its power or potential.

What is the cost? Great Expectations Project Costs: Approximately $750,000-$850,000

The Bible clearly teaches something we all understand – that each of us cannot afford to give at the same level. We would not merely divide up the estimated cost of the project and ask everyone to give an equal share. This process, as it is spiritual in nature, is not about equal giving but about equal sacrifice. Jesus commended the giving of the widow’s mite not because of what it meant financially, but what it meant spiritually and sacrificially.

What should you give? Well, that is not just a financial question but a spiritual question as well; one which you need to take to your spouse and to the Lord.

“Whatever you give is acceptable if you give it eagerly. And give accord-ing to what you have, not what you don’t have.”

2 Corinthians 8:12

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

2 Corinthians 9:7

We would encourage you, in a spirit of prayer, to ask three questions regard-ing any potential gifts:

What can I AFFORD to give?We can I SACRIFICE to give? What can I TRUST God to enable me to give?

How do you give? Cash, checks and securities (If you would like more info on tax-efficient giv-ing, please contact Eric Muchmore our Stewardship & Communications Team Leader at 201-919-6025, [email protected])

“For which of you, desiring to build...does not first sit down and count the cost?”

- Jesus

What Can I Give Over 18 Months?

Should you redirect your current giving? To redirect or divide your tithe would weaken the ongoing work and minis-tries of the church supported by the budget. We are trusting God to help us give beyond our regular support to the General Fund and Missions funds so that we may continue and expand our regular ministry.

How should I plan my giving? You may find it easier to be faithful if you give on a weekly or monthly basis, however you may give as best fits your income and budget. If you are able, however, giving received earlier in the 18-month timeframe will help us to expedite the initial stages of the project.

In order to ensure thorough communication during our Great Expectations Campaign, Mendham Hills has commissioned a new Stewardship & Commu-nications Team. This team’s goal is to make sure every question is answered and that every person has been informed about the project and given the opportunity to participate. Team members will be available to answer ques-tions and provide additional insight on three Sundays: 5/3, 10 & 17 after both services in the first floor youth room, and 5/3 from 6-8pm (during T24 youth group) at Grace House. Essentially this team exists to serve you, and you are also welcome and encouraged to reach out to any of them directly as well Should you have any questions about the project or the campaign, please feel free to reach out to any of them.

In the parking lot:

Change service times to allow more time between the first and second services (this is planned for Fall 2015).

Staff/Elders/Leaders park at Grace House to reduce the number of vehicles in the lot.

Add temporary gravel parking.

Utilize off-site parking (we have used the Westmont Montessori School and Sammy’s restaurant in the past) and provide shuttle service.

Add additional paved parking (plans exist, however they are not yet approved by Chester Township).

An Obvious QuestionOur church is growing; how will we handle that

growth in two key areas? In the sanctuary: We have an incremental plan to accommodate increased numbers of people in our sanctuary.

Increase the number of chairs (up to 275) in the sanctuary.

Free up existing seats by beginning our MHCC Kids pro-gram at the same time as the service (we currently dismiss kids during worship). The new addition on the east side of the building, coupled with the expanded children’s ministry space, will facilitate flow and create a room large enough for kids’ worship.

Add a third service.
