A nation which seeks the common good cannot be closed in on itself; societies are strengthened by networks of relationships. The current prob-
lem of immigration makes this clear. . . . Instead of raising walls, we need to be building bridges.
Building bridges instead of raising walls. All these issues, thorny as they may be, can find
shared solutions; solutions which are reasonable, equitable and lasting.
And in any event, they should never be a cause for aggressiveness,
resentment or enmity; these only worsen situations and stand in the
way of their resolution. (7/8/15)
HIDING FROM OURSELVES In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus seems pretty
rough on religious people. In the Sermon on the Mount (Chapters 5 through 7), Jesus frequently speaks to people who know the Law of Moses, and to those who hold posi-tions of authority in the Jewish community. Jesus was shaking them up! In today’s Gospel, when he interprets specific portions of the Law, he relates the Law to the deeper regions of the human heart. He challenges his lis-teners, and us, to see what we hide from ourselves.
If we are not diligent, we can use a system of eth-ics or religious law to assure ourselves and others that we are morally upright. When this happens, we can think there is no need for us to reflect or to change, and we have no need for forgiveness. Jesus reminds us that we can sometimes use religion to distract us from the difficult, ongoing work of self-reflection and repentance.
Today’s Readings: Sir 15:15–20; Ps 119:1–2, 4–5, 17–18, 33–34; 1 Cor 2:6–10; Mt 5:17–37 [20–22a, 27–28, 33–34a, 37]

FAST & ABSTINENCE: Ash Wednesday is March 1st The general rule of the church is: “All persons who have completed their 14th year are bound by the law of abstinence; all adults are bound by the law of fast up to the beginning of their 60th year. Never-theless, pastors and parents are to see to it that minors who are not bound by the law of fast and abstinence are educated in an authentic sense of penance.” (Canon 1253)
Abstinence means abstaining from meat. Fasting means one full meal a day, with two lighter meals in the course of a day to main-tain strength.
The Fridays of Lent in the United States are days of abstinence from meat.
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence from meat.
