This is a tour which delves deep into South Africa’s political past and opens up doors to communities not always

encountered in the city itself. You will start off at the colourful Bo- Kaap, home to the Malay community and one of the

oldest residential areas in the city, before crossing over to District Six, once a vibrant Coloured neighbourhood, before

forced removals under the Group Areas Act of Apartheid turned it into a desolate wasteland. The museum makes for

interesting viewing. Then visit one of the townships – created specifically for black residents under Apartheid. Join local

community workers on a walk about through the township, meeting many friendly faces en route and also seeing the

changes being brought about here with the advent of the New South Africa. Stop at one of the many successful projects

operated by uThando, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the upliftment of communities.

Return to the city and board a ferry to Robben Island. Here you will be joined by a local guide – someone who spent time

on the island during the Apartheid years – thus able to give a personal and often moving account of time spent there. You

will also learn something about the island’s most famous prisoner – Nelson Mandela – and see his cell where he spent nearly

27 years of his life.

Return to the Waterfront where you will be dropped off at your hotel.

Note: Half Day Walk to Freedom is as above but does not include Robben Island in the afternoon.

Please note that the actual touring on Robben Island is not private but is part of a group.

Uthando South Africa is our chosen charity in South Africa and serves as an umbrella for a wide range of highly effective

community projects across the country. In order to showcase these and also to offer a glimpse into the work being done to

uplift the disadvantaged in South Africa, they offer daily scheduled excursions visiting the sprawling townships around Cape

Town, with particular emphasis on visiting at least three of the social development projects being funded through Uthando.

The Uthando tours offer a unique and authentic introduction to the social problems confronting so many millions of South

Africans, while also illustrating the innovative and inspirational ways in which they are being handled by these marginalised

and destitute communities. Very importantly, the projects are not treated as tourist attractions and the tours are designed in

such a way as to educate, inform and inspire while also respecting the dignity and privacy of the people concerned. The

projects are, after all, places where people live, work and in most cases, just survive.

You will be collected at your hotel in the Cape Town area and dropped off at the end of the trip. A portion of the tour cost

goes directly to uThando charities.

This morning we journey to Groote Schuur Hospital, home of the world’s first heart transplant by Dr Christiaan Barnard.

The 2-hour tour, led by one of the original medical team, offers an intriguing account of this incredible piece of our South

African history. It’s got all the drama of 60’s South Africa - pioneering medical work on a shoestring budget, legal twists,

apartheid challenges, personal accounts of the donors and recipients and following the success of the operation,

professional jealousy, beautiful women and international recognition. The original operating theatres are impeccably

maintained and the rare access to the hospital footage and records is fascinating.

We then head into the colourful Bo-Kaap to explore the city by foot. So much about a country and a culture is expressed

through its cuisine. In South Africa much of the cuisine is home cuisine and difficult to sample. As such we’ll explore the

back streets to find the tastes that represent our rainbow nation. We walk the streets of Cape Town and experience its

history, its people and its culinary delights. En-route we stop to taste a mixture of traditional food, South African street food

and visit some artisanal foodie and coffee shops. You’ll get to taste delights such as Falooda - a traditional Muslim Rose

milkshake, samosas and chilli bites (dhaltjies), bobotie pies and bunny chows, all the while interacting with the very people

who make up our proud heritage. We’ll return to your hotel late afternoon.

Your complete cultural experience of Cape Town - the old and the new, the then and the now!

Experience the historic heart of the city on foot in the morning, while learning about South Africa’s dramatic history and

combine this with an authentic township experience in the afternoon. We start the day in the historic old city where we set

the scene for our story of Dutch and British rule, slavery and apartheid, freedom and democracy. We’ll meander through

the Company’s Garden, Grand Parade, the City Hall and Castle of Good Hope, lively Greenmarket Square, now home to

a bustling African curio market and the Slavery precinct which includes the Slave Lodge and Church Square. We also learn

the story of District Six and visit the Bo-Kaap (Malay Quarter) with its colourful houses and quaint cobbled stone streets.

In the afternoon, you will meet the local residents, understand their hardships and triumphs and be inspired by their sense of

community. To ensure your encounter is genuine and true, registered tour guides who are either resident in the townships or

intimately involved in township life conduct our township tours.

The private tour includes return transfers from city based hotels.

‘Colourful’, ‘Vibrant’, ‘Busy’, ‘Welcoming’…. just some of the adjectives that describe township life!

This township experience is about meeting with the locals and sharing experiences on an engaging, rewarding and uplifting

tour where you will be left feeling inspired by the pride of the communities living in the township of Langa. For an authentic

township cultural experience you need to walk, to hear, smell, touch and taste. You will be escorted by a local guide on a

journey of discovery, exploring the daily lives and culture of the Xhosa people. In Langa, the streets are the lifeblood of the

community. It is in the streets where the kids play soccer, where locals trade, walk, socialise and gather.

We recommend doing an afternoon township tour, where you will have the opportunity to meet with the children from

Happy Feet Youth Project. A charity initiative started in 2007, it is aimed at providing townships kids with positive role models

and a sense of “belonging” through dance, in an environment where crime is often a strong attraction.

Your morning tour includes lunch at the famous Mzoli’s, Guguletu (weekdays), Cape Town’s most popular authentic

township eating experience. Here, South Africans of all creeds and colours meet to enjoy a traditional braai (barbecue)

with plenty of cheers and chats. Weekends in particular are very popular with locals who dress to impress, let down their

hair and enjoy delicious fare! A home-hosted lunch is included over weekends and public holidays over the busiest periods

and to avoid the long queues.

The private tour includes return transfers from city based hotels.

We start the day with a visit to the District 6 Museum in Cape Town. This is Cape Town’s apartheid museum. This museum

represents the memories of a community on the outskirts of Cape Town where over 60 000 people were forcefully removed

from the mid 1960’s to the mid 1980’s. This visit allows us the opportunity to discuss what led to apartheid in this country and

to discuss how it was implemented. From here we travel to Langa Township to cook at a small cookery school that provides

the local residents with the skills needed to get jobs in the kitchens of the top hotels in Cape Town.

Page 7: Cape Town Day Tours 201 - Story Land & Sea › tours › african-safari › Cape-Town-Day-Tours.pdfmilkshake, samosas and chilli bites (dhaltjies), bobotie pies and bunny chows, all

This is one of only a handful of full time cooking schools based in a Cape Township. The students are not from privileged

homes and as such the fees charged cannot be very high. Money needs to be raised in order to provide these kids with

tuition, which is done through a variety of entrepreneurial ventures. They have created a restaurant out of shipping

containers and here they serve traditional African cuisine to the local community and to visitors. This facility is also used to

cater for functions in the local area, as well as for the cooking classes and brings much needed revenue into the school. A

visit to the school and restaurant is a unique opportunity for you to interact with a community initiative that is really working.

Here you learn about African and Xhosa culture and cuisine; have the opportunity to interact with the locals and for you to

also leave your mark on your journey to Cape Town. Your visit means that you are contributing in a small way to this project.

90% of the graduates secure a job (incredible in a country with an approximate 40% unemployment rate). Highlights on

your half day tour include a welcome drink of ginger beer while you listen to a talk on African cuisine and culture; a hands-

on cooking lesson where you learn to cook dishes like pap (similar to polenta), chakalaka, samp and a typical meat stew

before settling down to enjoy your dishes at the restaurant.

biking activities.

This morning you will be collected from your hotel for the start of your Cape Point Explorer tour. Start with a drive down the

peninsular, towards the Boulders penguin colony, where you enjoy a visit with these little birds before the crowds arrive.

Well-placed wooden walkways allow visitors to see these delightful little creatures in their natural habitat without invading

their privacy too much. Continue to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve at the tip of the peninsula.

Biking: Strong bikers may opt to ride from Boulders to the reserve and through to Cape Point. Otherwise, we will drive to the

reserve and bike along the quiet roads to one of the spectacular beaches. During our visit to the reserve, we explore the

old lighthouse at the point and the Cape of Good Hope. Wind permitting, the whole visit may be done by bike. Your guide

will tailor the ride to your preferences and the conditions on the day.

Walking: After entering the reserve, we drive to a quiet beach on the western side of the reserve where we encounter

great coastal scenery with the chance to see wildlife. The route starts out on the beach, taking in some interesting rock

escarpment. A sandy trail with some rocky sections takes you back to the starting point, with an interesting side trip to the

ruins of the WWII submarine observation posts. Following the hike, we continue to the point, where we visit the old

Bay and the 12 Apostles. Strong walkers have the option to continue to the highest point at Maclear’s Beacon before

Take in the sites and spectacular scenery of the Winelands with your private guide as you make your way through superb

mountain ranges, vineyards and Cape Dutch homesteads. For families that love being out in the open, surrounded by

beautiful scenery and enjoy doing things together, there is much to offer with a selection of farms geared towards wine

lovers with kids. Today we sample a selection of some of the finest wine estates and top-notch ‘family-friendly’ estates. From

sessions that include a tasty food pairing - think chocolate and cheese - to ones preceded by a Segway tour, there’s

definitely something to suit every age (and palate).

With award-winning wine and delicious food on offer, a wine tasting at Spier is one of the most popular options in the

Stellenbosch area. Here, the chocolate and wine pairing is a particular highlight which, as the name suggests, sees the

farm’s signature Méthode Cap Classique and Creative Block blends complemented by specially curated chocolates.

Children are offered a special grape juice tasting and for something totally different, the 2-hour Segway tour (additional

cost) is highly recommended. Not only is a ride on one of these two-wheeled, self-balancing electric vehicles a whole lot of

fun, but it also offers a chance to experience the farm’s vineyards and pastures. Middlevlei in the Devon Valley is genuinely

relaxed and down to earth - a great antidote to stuffy wine farms. Go for the boerebraai (traditional South African

barbecue) where kids receive a special basket with treats including a ‘stokbrood’ - a bread they can cook themselves over

the open flames. Little ones are encouraged to run wild on the lawns and feed the farm animals - look out for the wallabies

- and no-one will look twice at muddy feet. With an outdoor wooden deck and a generous fireplace, Mulderbosch’s

13

tasting room can facilitate tastings in both the warmer and colder months. But what makes a session at the vineyard truly

special is that you can pair its full range of wines (up to five per session) with delicious, thin-based, wood-fired pizzas.

Alternatively, if you are just in the mood for a nibble, you can opt for a charcuterie or cheese board.

At Laborie’s Harvest restaurant in Paarl, you’re guaranteed an excellent meal with a table near the jungle gym keeping the

little ones busy, while the older kids (and their parents) will enjoy playing boulles on the lawns. A mere 45-minute drive from

Cape Town, Spice Route’s delightful village set-up in Paarl is the perfect day out for the whole family. Aside from fabulous

restaurants, there’s a smorgasbord of tempting things to do, see and taste! There’s craft brewery that offers an ultra-slick

beer tasting, Wilderer distillery for grappa, an art gallery, a glass-blowing studio, a biltong bar…and more! The most popular

activity is the guided chocolate tasting at DV Artisan Chocolate. Here a tutored ‘adult-version’ wine pairing is highly

recommended although the kids will prefer the shorter 25-minute chocolate tasting.

The Franschhoek Motor Museum offers visitors a special opportunity to look back at more than 100 years of motoring history

with its unique and exciting collection of vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and memorabilia in the magnificent setting of

L’Ormarins. The museum's collection exceeds 220 vehicles - ranging from a 1898 Beeston motor tricycle to a 2003 Ferrari

Enzo supercar - and more than 80 exhibits will be on view at any one time, displayed in four de-humidified halls with a total

floor area of 2700 m², and presented in chronological order.

This day is yours to tailor and craft as you choose. Enjoy lunch at one of the family-friendly restaurants or estates (lunch to be

settled directly but wine tastings included) and you will return to your hotel late this afternoon.

This delightful drive winds its way through superb mountain ranges, vineyards and Cape Dutch homesteads. Your first stop is

Stellenbosch, the second oldest town in South Africa, with canal lined avenues, and magnificent examples of Cape Dutch

architecture. Simon van der Stel was the first settler to spot the opportunities offered by the lush area between the two

branches of the Eerste Rivier, setting up camp here in 1679. The fertile valley was soon settled on by farmers who planted

the region’s first vines a few short years later - and today, the valley boasts more private cellars than any other Western

Cape region (with over 100 open to the public).

But there’s more to Stellenbosch than wineries. This leafy student town is home to some of the country’s top restaurants and

award-winning producers. Schoon De Companje is famous for its superb ciabatta, sourdough bread (sprinkled with

chocolate or cinnamon), rye and breadsticks. While you’re there, grab a coffee and browse the wine counter, artisan ice

cream and charcuterie stands. It’s a great spot to pick up an interesting gift or two. Stellenbosch locals are spoilt for choice

with a variety of top quality delis like Wild Peacock, for truffle oil and Valrhona chocolate, Joostenberg Deli and Oom

Samie se Winkel, an old-style trading store stocked with interesting preserves and spices.

You’ll then make your way to Waterford Wine Estate for a wine safari. Jump on board the modified Landrover, and enjoy

the drive through the vineyards of the scenic Waterford Estate. Stopping at various points along the way, you will learn all

about the various types of grapes, and techniques used to make Waterford Wines, finally stopping at the wooden deck to

enjoy a wine tasting with a difference, set right amidst the vineyards and with spectacular views.

Onward to Franschhoek over the scenic Helshoogte Pass (also known as the R310), one of the most travelled routes in the

Winelands, linking the wine districts of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek and passing through the little farming villages of

Kylemore, Johannesdal and Pniel.

Hands down, one of the most celebrated wine and food destinations in South Africa, the beautiful Franschhoek Valley, was

established by French Huguenot refugees in 1688, and is a captivating blend of European charm and spectacular verdant

scenery. The main street is dotted with high-end boutiques, fine dining restaurants, art galleries and cafés, and it is the

perfect setting for lunch (own account). After lunch take a stroll through village and stop off for a further wine tasting at

one of the renowned estates in this area before your return to your hotel.

So much about a country and a culture is expressed through its cuisine. In South Africa much of the cuisine is a home

cuisine and to get a taste you really need to search hard. As such this tour aims to combine the history of this country and

city through exploring the back streets to find the tastes that represents all of the rainbow nation. Today you’ll walk the

streets of Cape Town and experience its history, its people and its culinary delights. En-route you’ll stop to taste a mixture of

traditional food, South African street food and to visit some artisanal foodie and coffee shops. During the walk we will also

taste some of the following items: African Soul food: pap, samp & beans, a meat stew and vetkoek; Falooda - a traditional

Muslim Rose Milkshake; a gourmet bunny chow to get a little taste of Indian Cuisine; coffee from one of the micro artisan

coffee roasters in the city; bobotie pies - this is a modern take on the traditional Bobotie dish which both the Cape Malay

group and white Afrikaner group refer to as their traditional dish.

Today we head into the Winelands to South Africa’s 2nd oldest town, Stellenbosch. It was Simon van der Stel who was the

first settler to spot the opportunities offered by the lush area between the two branches of the Eerste Rivier for the Cape

colony, setting up camp here while on a tour of inspection in 1679. The fertile valley was soon settled on by farmers who

planted the region’s first vines a few short years later.

Three hundred odd years on, the valley boasts more private cellars than any other Western Cape region (with over 100

open to the public) and the country’s oldest wine route. But there’s more to Stellenbosch than wineries. This leafy student

town is home to some of the country’s top restaurants and award-winning producers.

Here you will join your culinary guide as she leads you through the historic heart of Stellenbosch. You’ll have a chance to

sample some traditional cape food and wine (like biltong, Bobotie, koeksisters and melktert) while meeting a host of

colourful characters en-route! You’ll enjoy a heritage lunch platter at the oldest hotel in the country and visit the oldest

shop in town.

We then continue onward over the scenic Helshoogte Pass, to Franschhoek, founded by French Huguenots over 350 years

ago, and widely regarded as the culinary capital of South Africa. Its beautiful setting and café lined streets will charm you.

We stop at several renowned wine estates to sample some of their award winning wines before heading back to Cape

Town.

Enjoy an afternoon of fine food, wine and spectacular scenery on this exclusive tour from Cape Town to Constantia, one of

South Africa's premier wine-tasting destinations and culinary hotspots. On this tour of the Winelands we combine the best of

the Cape with a scenic helicopter transfer and an insightful afternoon tour, escorted by a knowledge guide.

Nestled just a cork’s throw away from the city centre, the affluent and lush Constantia Valley is the perfect choice if you’re

based in the city and don’t want to venture too far for wine tasting. It also happens to be the oldest wine-making region in

the country (it was established in 1685) and has become synonymous with premium, award-winning reds and whites,

especially Sauvignon Blanc. Constantia is ideal for a one-day tasting tour as the whole route is only 7.25km from one end to

the other, affording the opportunity to see a good mix of new-age boutique wineries and historic, Cape Dutch-style

estates.

You will be collected from your hotel late morning today and transferred to the V&A Waterfront to board your state-of-the-

art helicopter for a 12 minute private flight* across the city and over the Southern Suburbs to Constantia. Travelling inland

on the most direct route you will land at the beautiful Steenberg Estate to sample prized wines and a gourmet lunch (for

own account) at the estate's award-winning and contemporary restaurant, Catharina’s. A chic space designed for

modern dining, the restaurant boasts spectacular vineyard and mountain views.

After lunch, you will be collected from the restaurant by your private guide who will offer further insight into this diverse

region. Visit the state-of-the-art cellar at Steenberg, completed in 1996, with the capacity to produce around 70,000 cases.

The cellar also boasts a modern vinoteque, where bottled wines can be kept under ideal conditions until ready to be

enjoyed.

20

The rest of the afternoon is yours to delve into a few more estates (max 2-3 depending on time available). Some other

notable Constantia wine farms for tastings include Buitenverwachting, Beau Constantia (it claims stunning views from a

world-class glass tasting room) and Silvermist (for 100% organic wine). As part of the original vineyard that in the 18th

century produced “Constantia”, prized throughout Europe by the leaders and aristocracy of the time, Klein Constantia has

helped to reclaim its former glory by initiating the revival of this famous sweet wine. Vin de Constance, is probably the most

famous and admired wine produced on this estate and is a re-creation of the legendary sweet Constantia. A superb way

to end your day off on a sweet note!

Upon conclusion of our tour, we travel via Hout Bay and the Atlantic Seaboard back to the city.

*For a wildly scenic alternative to the inland helicopter transfer, you have the option to take in the incredible aerial views

and fly along the Atlantic coast past Green Point, Sea Point; the beaches of Clifton, Camps Bay, the Twelve Apostles

mountain range and the exclusive neighborhood of Llandudno through to Hout Bay. From here, you will veer across to

Constantia and touch down at Steenberg Estate. An additional supplement of R1459 per person applies.

This tailor-made tour by your resident wine expert is designed for the visitor who would like to experience and taste some of

the other delectable delights that are also on offer in the winelands area in addition to some of the fantastic wines. The tour

is geared not only for the tasting but for the educational value as well as learning about each product that you are

introduced to. Your day can include Paarl, with its imposing Afrikaans Language Monument and of course the Franschhoek

Valley.

Hands down, one of the most celebrated wine and food destinations in South Africa, the beautiful Franschhoek Valley,

which was established by French Huguenot refugees in 1688, is a captivating blend of European charm and spectacular

verdant scenery. The town itself is well worth a visit, with the main street dotted with high-end boutiques, fine dining

restaurants and art galleries. The valley is renowned for making excellent versions of almost any varietal and if sparkling wine

appeals, there’s also a dedicated Cap Classique route here. We recommend Solms Delta (for a Cape food & wine

pairing), Haute Cabrière (see a sabrage show on Saturdays) and Babylonstoren (it boasts a breathtaking eight-acre

garden).

Perhaps most well known as the home of commercially popular winery Fairview and its famed goats, Paarl is the slightly

more rural, covert sibling of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. That said, it’s also one of the most innovative wine regions in the

Western Cape - it’s responsible for creating the world’s first white Pinotage and bottling SA’s first Bordeaux-style red blend.

The more than 28 farms that make up the district are spread out around the iconic pearl-shaped Paarl Rock (the town

takes its name from this mountain. Spice Route, Nederburg and Glen Carlou (Kleine Draken is worth a visit for kosher wines)

are some of the wine farms worth visiting for tastings in the area.

If there’s one wine region everyone knows, it’s the Stellenbosch wine route. Sprawling out around the old university town of

Stellenbosch, this vast, pretty locale is the most commercial and well-established of all wine destinations in South Africa (in

fact, it was the first wine territory to establish a coordinated wine route). For a little sparkle to tantalise the taste buds, the

Villiera Cap Classique and Sally Williams Nougat Pairing Experience is a must, where four MCC Sparkling Wines are paired

with a decadent nougat range.

From cheese tasting, to chocolate, biltong and olives tastings, this day is yours to tailor and craft as you choose. Enjoy lunch

at one of the top restaurants or estates (lunch to be settled directly but wine tastings included) and you will return to your

hotel late this afternoon.

Cape Town is a hotbed of cutting-edge design and with its relatively low rentals, the city centre attracts a varied and quirky

retail offering, from individually-owned boutiques stocking hand-made garments to high-end African art. One-way Long

Street (which becomes two-way Kloof Street as it clambers up the mountain slope) is a good starting point, though

happening Bree Street (running parallel to Long Street) is being transformed into a décor and shopping mecca littered with

independent boutique merchants.

Bree Street favourites include South Africa Market or "SAM" for short, situated above the bustling restaurant and fashion

district on Bree in an elevated loft-like space. Designed to appeal to locals and tourists alike, the market has an open and

stylish feel and showcases everything from homeware to clothing by a host of rising local stars. Fashionable and edgy

leather goods designer, Missibaba and London-based jewellery designer Kirsten Goss, have joined forces at a heavenly

and oh-so-pretty boutique just a few doors down to bring you the best of South African luxury accessories. You simply

cannot leave Cape Town without a beautifully hand-crafted statement bag or a piece of contemporary jewellery. Another

Bree Street wonder, Skinny laMinx showcases owner, designer and illustrator, Heather Moore's wonderful textile and design

work - all professionally printed in Cape Town on an array of cushion covers, tea towels, tableware, bags, aprons and more!

Stable, just around the corner on Loop Street, is a collaborative exhibition space making local design, art and artisan items

easily accessible.

A kilometre from Cape Town’s city centre, Woodstock used to be home to more textile factories than fashion outlets. But in

recent years this industrial area with its stupendous mountains views has changed dramatically. The transformation of the

Old Biscuit Mill into a hub of cafés and creativity led the way for further regeneration in the area and The Woodstock

Exchange has bought even more fashion and design to the area with a collection of ‘workshops-cum-boutiques’, cafés

and collectives housed under one roof. Mosey around the lanes here and you’re likely to walk away with some truly unique

finds. The Woodstock Exchange reflects how Woodstock is growing in stature as Cape Town’s design hub with many of its

boutiques occupied by young entrepreneurs - and many of these spaces fulfil a dual role of retail shop as well as workshop

space… take a sneak peak behind a screen and you may just find a designer at work. Designs on offer vary from arts to

There is no substitute to discovering a city and its shops with a local expert and with limited time and so much to see and

buy, the inner-city shopping hub is best discovered in the company of your own personal shopper. Our local expert has her

finger on the pulse when it comes to discovering the hidden gems of the Cape Town shopping world and she will tailor your

tour based on your specific interests.

Saturday’s and Sunday’s are notoriously bad days for shopping in South Africa and we recommend keeping these days

free for site seeing. That said, if shopping over the weekend cannot be avoided, The Watershed at the V&A Waterfront is

your go-to-place to stock-up on locally designed goods. Beautifully displayed, curated and styled, the space has a

contemporary, industrial feel and features well-known labels such as Mungo & Jemima (for local street-fashion), Dark Horse

(leather-goods and furniture) and Pichulik (super-cool, designer jewellery) to newer, lesser-known names and a selection of

curios. Whilst the focus in the past has been on expensive, international labels only, the Watershed is home to more than

150 local tenants - from ceramics and homeware, to jewellery, clothing and accessories - there really is plenty to see (and

buy). So, not only is this is a wonderful platform for designers to exhibit and sell their products, but it’s also super convenient.

Set off early this morning from Cape Town for the 2-hour transfer to Kleinbaai Harbour at Gansbaai, the launch pad for

whale watching cruises in this area, which is remarkably rich in marine life. After an introductory talk, depart for Dyer Island,

8 kms from shore. This island is protected for its many bird species, including African Penguins, Cape Gannets and Giant

Petrels. Adjacent is Geyser Rock, home to 60 000 Cape Fur Seals – the channel between these two islands is known as Shark

Alley as Great White Sharks cruise the waters in search of their favourite prey. In and around these waters are strong

numbers of Bryde’s Whales and Humpback Whales, as well as dolphins which make for very rewarding – and close up –

sightings. Return to shore and enjoy a warm drink while watching a DVD of your day before returning to Cape Town.

Note: Private transfers can be arranged from Cape Town at additional cost and are recommended during the peak

periods when hotel pickups can begin as early as 4:30am.

Great White Shark Breaching in False Bay

Duration Full Day (8hrs)

Availability Daily June to Aug only

Pick-up Time 06h00 - time confirmed the night before

Tour Basis Scheduled small group

Rate R3725 per person

You will be picked up this morning from your hotel and transferred to the launch site in False Bay. Collection is at 06:00 with

launch at 07:00. You will join your skipper, a qualified shark expert for a briefing before setting off for Seal Island. Scientists

have acknowledged that great white sharks behave differently in False Bay at Seal Island to anywhere else along the South

African coastline. This is mostly due to the ideal topographical structure around the island, allowing for stealth and attack

and therefore “flying” out of the water after their prey.

On arrival at the island around sunrise you will spend the first 1 - 1.5 hours watching the natural predation activity and trying

to get the sharks to breach on the decoy seal. Breaching is spectacular and involves the Great White Shark launching its

body clear out of the water to attack fleeing Cape Fur Seals. From around half 9 to 12:00 we will anchor the boat at the

island and you will have the opportunity to cage dive should you so wish. You will return to the harbour around 2pm.

Refreshments are served on board the boat. You will be transferred back to your hotel in Cape Town.

Pick up is at 06:30 from your hotel for your transfer to the little town of Kleinbaai, close to Hermanus and Gansbaai. After a

safety briefing, you board your shark-chaser, the Predator II for the 5-mile voyage to Dyer Island. The island, together with

Geyser Rock nearby, is home to 40 000 Cape Fur Seals, the Great White Shark’s favourite prey, and the channel which runs

between the two is known as Shark Alley. This is where you will anchor - using a specially mixed chum to attract the sharks,

you will soon have an opportunity to see them feeding at the surface, alongside the boat. The cage is then lowered and

you will be able to witness these incredible hunters of the deep in your wetsuit, protected by galvanised steel mesh. All

diving equipment is supplied and only snorkelling experience is required if you want to go down in the cage. A light lunch is

served on the boat as well as refreshments and you will have the chance to see seals and whales in season as well as the

sharks. Return to land at around 15:00 for your transfer back to your hotel.
