DISCOVERINGGLOBAL CITYYOUR

When CAPA student Rashad Williams arrived in Shanghai, he didn’t expect as much diversity as he found. “Shanghai’s catapult into economic success

has drawn a lot of attention from other countries, and now Shanghai is known as a global megacity.

This simply means that there are a plethora of influences from all over the world that impact

local business and tourism. Since I have been in Shanghai, I’ve personally seen and met people from all over the world –from places like Africa, India, the

United Kingdom, Latin America, and Australia, to name a few.”

So what makes Shanghai—and other CAPA cities—Global Cities? These metropolises transcend their

boundaries and influence the arts, the sciences, and politics beyond their own city limits, inspiring

dynamic and rapid change within their home countries and throughout the world.

CAPA’s programs reside in such cities, places where you will see the forces of globalization at

work. As Rashad points out, “over the past 10 or so years, Shanghai has undergone a tremendous economic renovation and reform under Chairman

Den Xiaoping’s leadership, following Chairman Mao Zedong’s socialist leadership. This has allowed for

what was once known as a fishing village to develop into China’s largest financial and economic hub and one of the world’s largest cities.”

Students who study in CAPA’s Global Cities locations learn quickly that their impressions of these countries are often different from the realities. In Florence and Dublin, for example, students find themselves immersed in hubs of cultural imagination and creativity—cities that continue to influence the arts, literature, and history of western civilization.

As sites for exploration, discovery, and analysis, CAPA’s Global Cities help you understand how each location has been imagined, invented, and transformed and how each city has helped shape the modern world. Rashad affirms this: “I’ve always believed that education through experience is more effective than one through a textbook. Living and studying in Shanghai was far more versatile than just taking classes outside of my home country. While studying abroad in China I was able to recognize the differences in culture, customs, people, food, fashion, government, and history.”

Regardless of where you choose to study, CAPA’s Global City Programs offer exceptional and exciting opportunities for academic study, personal, and professional growth.

STUDENT LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT OUTCOMESYou will be exposed to a variety of new experiences throughout your time abroad, and while you’ll likely sense that you are benefitting from this experience, it may not always be easy to articulate what exactly you’ve learned and how it will be of value to you afterwards.

Fortunately, CAPA makes you an active participant in your development. Everything you’ll do as part of your study abroad program will be an opportunity to achieve one of the following Student Learning and Development Outcomes. Upon your return to the U.S., you will be well equipped to describe what you learned abroad to faculty at your home campus, or during graduate school admissions process, or to your career counselor, and in job interviews!

Talk to a CAPA Admissions Advisor at 800.793.0334 to learn more about the Student Learning and Development Outcomes.

LONDON THAT CHARMING BRITISH ACCENT IS NOT

ALL YOU’LL HEAR ACROSS THE POND!

Did you know that more than 300 languages are spoken in London? A bustling, international crossroads, London offers something for

everyone. In London, CAPA students can choose between two different program options: The London Global Cities Program and the London

South Bank University (LSBU) Program.

The London Global Cities Program is located in two inter-connected Victorian townhouses in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea,

minutes away from famous London landmarks like the Victoria and Albert and the Natural History museums. The Center has fully equipped

classrooms, a state-of-the-art theater, a computer lab and resource room, student lounge, student study room, wireless Internet access, and small library. Semester students also have a membership to the

Student Union at Imperial College, part of the University of London and a 20-minute walk from the CAPA London Center.

The London South Bank University (LSBU) Program is a way to enhance your academic experience in London. During the Fall, students in the CAPA Global Cities Program can take up to two courses at LSBU, which is part of the British university system, in addition to courses from the London Global Cities Program.

At LSBU, you will take courses alongside other British and international students. LSBU has more than 25,000 students and is based in the borough of Southwark, a 45-minute subway ride from the CAPA London Center. Note: This option cannot be combined with an internship.

For more information about the LSBU program, visit capa.org/london

WALK ONE BLOCK AND FIND SOMETHING UNEXPECTED!

Apartments: You can live in a shared apartment with other CAPA students within a one-hour commute (a typical commute in London) from the CAPA London Center. Apartments are located throughout the city,

enabling you to get to know the diverse neighborhoods. Each apartment is shared by four to six students. All apartments have one to three bedrooms, a kitchen, shared common living area, one to two bathrooms,

weekly cleaning service, and Internet access.

Homestays: A homestay in a British home is a great way to get to know the typical (non-royal!) Londoner. Located

in residential areas in the suburbs, homestays are within a one hour commute to the CAPA London Center by public transportation. You will have your own room.

London is well known for its Underground, or “Tube,” which provides easy access throughout the city. Also a great walking city, London offers diverse neighborhoods and famous vistas at every turn. And of course, the city offers its iconic double decker bus service as well. From London, trains and buses can take you throughout the British countryside, and mainland Europe is only a train/ferry/plane ride away. CAPA will provide you with a local transportation pass.

TRAVEL THE TUBE.

DISCOVER THE NEW “FOODIE” CULTURE!

Traditional fish and chips, modern and locally sourced menus and international cuisine reflect London’s cosmopolitan flavor. Living in an apartment, you can cook your own meals or take advantage of London’s many restaurants where you can try everything from Yorkshire pudding to flavorful curry dishes. Homestay students will have breakfast and dinner provided by their hosts.

If you are participating in the Spring Quarter Program, you can choose to live in a shared studio residence or in a homestay. Each bedroom (typically twin rooms) in the residence housing includes a basic kitchenette, bathroom, desk, wireless Internet, and common areas with TVs. Utilities and linens are also included. (Homestay inclusions are the same as above).

DRAGON BOAT ON THE ARNO RIVER.

1

This was my absolute favorite event. Società Canottieri Firenze is a prestigious rowing club, not open to the general public. Rowing is a popular hobby for many Florentines, aside from futbol! Three club members took a group of CAPA students for a ride, which allowed us to connect with locals while learning how to properly row. We discussed their passion for rowing and dos and don’ts for Florence.

2 FIORENTINA FUTBOL GAME VS SASSUOLO.

Another highlight from my time in Florence, this event allowed CAPA students to experience the hype of a European soccer match. A CAPA staff member printed a page for each student with the chants and songs that we would hear throughout the game. This came in handy because it allowed us to chant along with die-hard fans. Going to a soccer game on our own time would have been fun, but the game sponsored by My Global Education really allowed us to have the true Florentine experience.

3 ETHNIC WALK AROUND FLORENCE AND LECTURE.

My third favorite event was one I had to go on for my Global City class, but it was the most rewarding because it opened my eyes to the minority and immigrant populations in Florence. The ethnic walk took us to the Islamic Center and the Synagogue, ending with lunch at an Arabic restaurant. The Islamic Center and restaurant were next to my apartment. I never went into these places on my own, even though I waked past them each day. We learned about Islamic religion, toured the center, sampled Arabic cuisine and were shown how to cook the food we tasted. We toured the only Synagogue in the city center and learned about its history and that of the Jewish community in Florence.

AN INTERNSHIP EXP

Interning abroad is a great way to gain real career experience within a global context. While there are numerous benefits students gain from an international internship, there is also a big impact that the student/intern has on his/her internship site. Maggie Moriarty, who studied abroad in Dublin, shared with CAPA World Blog her experiences interning at the Irish Innocence Project –a non-profit organization that works to exonerate wrongfully convicted individuals – and the impact her work had on the organization and on her personal development.

ERIENCE WITH BIG IMPACT

INTERVIEW WITH MAGGIE MORIARTY WHO STUDIED AND INTERNED ABROAD IN DUBLIN

Page 43: CAPA The Global Education Network Magazine 2016

CW: What changes have you seen in yourself personally since you began your study abroad program? What has your experience taught you about yourself professionally in terms of your future career goals?

MM: Studying abroad gave me the push I needed to transition from a dependent young girl to a mature, independent young woman. By going to Dublin without knowing anyone, I learned that I can do things on my own and can make friends quite easily. Being around such different personalities allowed me to broaden my horizons and see positives in everyone. One of my favorite statements is: “Traveling is the only thing that makes you broke but rich at the same time.” I have come to find that to be true. I did things that other 21-year-olds only dream of and I had the time of my life!

business methods of different countries, something that gives me an advantage in comparison to other students my age. I am extremely appreciative of how involved I got to be on this project. Normally in the U.S., an internship consists of mostly admin work, but in Ireland I was able to sit in on board meetings and truly get hands-on experience.

CW: Give an example of a valuable contribution you made to your internship site and how it has impacted the operation of the workplace.

MM: One of my main duties at my internship was creating email newsletters that were sent out to over a thousand people all over the world. I was writing these newsletters completely by myself and learned how to connect with all audiences on a global scale. The goal of the email newsletters was to create awareness about the Irish Innocence Project and to get people to register for the conference. My email newsletters had hundreds of opens and brought in a long list of registrants to the conference.

CW: Describe a week in the life of a CAPA intern.

MM: I took three classes and worked 20 hours at my internship site, so my typical week was a bit strenuous! I was away from my room from 9:30AM - 5:30PM every day to attend classes and work at my internship site.

The Learning Through Internships class was definitely my favorite, mainly because it allowed the CAPA students to bond with one another. It was a very personal class where we talked about our internships and developed a better understanding of what the rest of the students were doing. The class also gave me insight into the different work cultures between Ireland and the U.S.

CAPA World: Tell us a bit about yourself.

Maggie Moriarty: I’m a Communications major at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. During my junior year I studied abroad in Dublin.

CW: Tell us about the internship you completed while studying abroad, your duties and accomplishments and a bit about the organization. How will this experience help you in your future career?

MM: I was a marketing intern for the Irish Innocence Project. The organization aims to exonerate wrongfully convicted individuals and I helped them plan the first ever International Conference and Film Festival.

Throughout my internship, I learned the value of research, targeting an audience, and adapting to the different work culture in Ireland. It is a bit different than in America as it is a relaxing setting that allowed me to gain confidence and independence. I also gained intercultural competence –I can adapt to the

CAPA World: Tell us a bit about yourself. Where you go to school and about your study abroad experience.

Sarah Rollins: I am a pre-veterinary major at the UMASS Amherst. My ultimate goal is to attend veterinary school. I absolutely love animals and I couldn’t imagine perusing any career other than veterinary medicine. I studied abroad in Sydney and was an intern at Haberfield Veterinary Hospital.

CW: What was it like to study abroad in Sydney, specifically as an animal science major?

SR: It was absolutely amazing studying abroad in Sydney as an animal science major. There weren’t lots of animals in and around the busy streets of Sydney, but places relatively close to Sydney had spectacular animals. For someone interested in animal science, I would recommend exploring parts of the country that have an abundance of wild animals.

One weekend, my best friend and I went on a road trip down the east coast of Australia. We stopped at a quiet beach. Kangaroos were just hanging out on the beach and surrounding grass. I was like a kid in a candy store seeing wild kangaroos for the first time. Another weekend, we traveled to Cairns. While there, we took a hike through a rain forest reservation area. In the middle of the hike, we saw wild chickens! I especially thought it was very cool to see those because I actually teacha class at UMASS about how to raise your own flock of chickens.

CW: Tell us a bit about the internship that you completed while studying abroad in Sydney, your day-to-day duties and accomplishments.

SR: I had an awesome experience at Haberfield Vet! Every day I wish I was back there still interning. I learned so much and gained important veterinary medicine skills. I was responsible for taking care of the healthy boarding animals by cleaning their cages, feeding, and walking them. Other duties included assisting veterinarians during surgery and appointments, medicating animals, and administrating fluids. I had never been able to assist in surgery before this internship, so surgery was what I learned the most about. I even got to participate in dental surgery. The doctor examined the mouth, extracted any teeth that needed to be taken out, and then I scaled (power-washed) and brushed the remaining teeth. After only a short amount of time, the dental surgeries became my favorite because I got to get in there and help.

AN EXCEPTIONAL OPPORTUNITY: GETTING HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE AS AN ASPIRING VETERINARIAN

An internship with Haberfield Veterinary Hospital in Sydney reassured CAPA study abroad alumna Sarah Rollins about the decision to pursue a career as a veterinarian. Sara tells CAPA World Blog about studying in Australia as an animal science major, her daily internship tasks, and some of the key skills she gained from her experience.

INTERVIEW WITH SARAH ROLLINS WHO STUDIED AND INTERNED ABROAD IN SYDNEY

CW: Give an example of a valuable contribution you made to your internship site and how it has impacted the operation of the workplace.

SR: The area where I made the most contribution to Haberfield Vet was cleaning and organization. For example, every exam room needs to be sterilized before another patient comes. When the vet had just finished up an appointment, I would clean the room and get it ready for her next one. This made things run more smoothly. When she finished her paperwork for the patient she had just seen, she could just move on to the next patient in the waiting room.

In addition, I tried to help the nurses out because they always had a ton of things going on at once. For instance, it was not uncommon for a nurse to be assisting the vet in an appointment, to be answering the phone, and helping the people who were waiting at the front desk all at the same time. I tried to help so the nurse didn’t have to focus on three tasks at once.

CW: Where were the places you carved out as “Your Sydney” - the places you found outside of the tourist sites, the places that were most meaningful for you?

SR: I think “My Sydney” was my internship site at Haberfield Veterinary Hospital. I absolutely loved interning there! I learned an enormous amount about different aspects of the veterinary field that I will now have forever. The practice where I interned was very small. They were extremely tight knit and are a loving family. I was so grateful they let me be part of their family for three months. I wouldn’t give that experience back for anything.

Many students who study abroad report that their overseas experience was a contributing factor to their career development. Certainly, studying and/or interning abroad gives you an edge as you enter the competitive job market.

We recently caught up with David Kozhuk who studied and interned in London some years ago and he tells us about his own career trajectory, including his most recent entrepreneurial venture, uConnect.

CAPA WORLD: Tell us a bit about yourself –where are you from, when and where did you study abroad with CAPA? What are a few of your hobbies and interests?

DAVID KOZHUK: I grew up in Lynnfield, MA –just outside of Boston. I went to UMass Amherst and studied with CAPA in London during the Fall semester of 2007. I’m a lover of all sports, technology, start-ups, and hip-hop music. I love to cook and-- of course-- to eat and spend time with my best friends and closest family.

HOW AN INTERNSHIP ABROAD SPARKED AN ENTREPRENEUR

STUDY ABROAD ALUM INTERVIEW:DAVID KOZHUK, FOUNDER OF UCONNECT

CW: How has your career developed since you returned to the States? What are you up to now that you’ve graduated?

DK: I interned with AIG’s London Private Equity group while studying abroad. When I came back to the States, I was able to parlay that experience into a full-time job with a private equity fund in Boston. I stayed in private equity for 5 years and, in 2012, left my job to launch uConnect. uConnect is a technology start-up that makes web and mobile applications designed to help colleges and universities provide rich online career services for their students.

CW: Tell us a bit about your internship while studying abroad: your duties and accomplishments.

DK: The internship experience was amazing. The small but very sophisticated team made secondary private equity investments in European Private Equity funds, actively managing hundreds of millions of euros. To this day, I keep in touch with two of the four members of that team.

CW: Give an example of a valuable contribution you made to your internship site and how it has impacted the operation of the workplace.

DK: I played a significant role in the due diligence process for a £€40 million deal that closed the last week I was there. The experience was so remarkable that I was able to leverage it into a full-time position with a firm in Boston that, otherwise, would have been very hard to get.

CW: What advice would you offer students currently studying abroad or considering a program?

DK: Studying abroad has been one of the richest experiences in my life and was one of the more rewarding decisions I made while on campus. Being a part of an internship program is icing on the cake. To be able to experience a city in a social, cultural, AND professional setting is unique to nothing else and one that most students should want to be a part of. Don’t worry about leaving your friends on campus or missing a semester of classes with your faculty and peers. You have 8 semesters on campus – dedicate one to an experience that will last a lifetime. You won’t regret it.

CW: Do you feel your study abroad and internship experience gave you an edge over your peers? If so, how?

DK: Living abroad provided me with incredible social and cultural perspectives. The internship gave me a huge advantage over anyone else coming out of local colleges in Boston, even over Ivy League students who had had domestic internships with top tier equity firms.

CW: What changes did you see in yourself during the course of your study abroad program? What did your experience teach you about yourself and the world around you?

DK: I became more mature – I learned to be concerned about my professional development, networking. I also developed personally and socially, and maintained friendships with people from my program.

PACKING SMART: TIPS FOR PACK RATS

Passport, visa, and plane tickets.

Extra cash in the local currency.

Laptop/tablet, phone, and camera.

Grooming and personal hygiene products and emergency kit.

Clothes: what climate will you be in? Will you need a coat or a bathing suit? Pack accordingly! Bring a weeks’ worth of underwear and socks, 2 pairs of jeans/pants, a few long and short sleeve shirts, a sweater, pajamas, workout clothes, and a couple of nice outfits for special occasions or if you’re doing an internship.

Shoes: pack a comfortable pair of shoes and sneakers because you’ll be doing a lot of walking and a pair of nice shoes for dressing up.

Roll your clothes when packing. This trick will save you a lot of room.

Download the Packing Pro Travel app. Very useful!

Check on your airline’s weight restrictions. Overweight luggage incurs high fees… but you should be packing light anyway!

STUDYING ABROAD AS A PICKY EATER

Since I was a child, I have been a terrible picky eater. Growing up, my main sources of sustenance were grilled cheese and buttered noodles. My parents did everything they could think of to expand my palate. Mostly, they bribed me. And it worked. Calamari became a favorite dish of mine after my mother promised to buy me a pack of Pokemon cards on the condition I try this seafood. During my Freshman year of college, a friend convinced me to just try a cheeseburger, and now it’s a staple.

You’re appalled by the fact that I didn’t eat hamburgers until I was 18, aren’t you? When it comes to food I’m a scaredy cat, which is one of the reasons why living in another country for a semester seemed daunting. And London, as I was told, had a notoriously bad reputation when it came to food. And so I planned on eating fish and chips for every meal and was certain the pizzas would be frozen.

But when I arrived, I realized that one does not come to a city with the hopes of exploring a new culture without also journeying through their food. I came to London to push myself, to try new things, to embark on a mission of self-discovery and growth; and so I knew I must pushpast my culinary boundaries.

During my second week living in London I took the first step. Since London has a massive immigrant population, I found that South Asian food was very popular but also quite authentic.

This is what led me, and 17 other CAPA students, to a restaurant called Tayyabs. Fish and chips weren’t on the menu! Tayyabs is known for its Punjabi cuisine, an area around northern India and southern Pakistan. They’re big on barbecue and cooking in a deep pot called a Karahi. I decided it was now or never. After all, when in Rome... or London.

And you know what? The lamb I had was good. I had nothing to compare it to, lamb-wise, but I assumed as far as lamb goes, it was pretty top notch. It tasted like a tender mix between pork and chicken, with a mild spice that tingled the inside of my cheeks. I enjoyed it. I would get it again.

I just kept thinking about the little kid who was such a picky eater. What would he say, seeing his older self eating lamb in a foreign country? Would he believe it? Would he be proud or terrified? But I guess it doesn’t matter, because the present me is proud. And in 10 years, if I keep taking risks, if I keep growing… Well, I think I’ll be proud then too!

A STUDENT’S UNLIKELY SHIFT IN FOCUSWORDS BY LEONARD CHEW WHO STUDIED ABROAD IN LONDON

I am grateful to have reaped so much more than I expected from my time in London. When I considered whether or not to study abroad, a primary motivation was to broaden my horizons, especially considering that I have not been to Europe before. But it also occurred to me that perhaps I should consider interning abroad, which I decided to do. How different things might have been had I decided otherwise.

Even though I was a psychology major, I decided to apply for an internship related to the automobile industry as cars were one of my non-academic passions! When I received notification from CAPA that I would be interning with Automotive PR (now Torque Agency Group), a public relations firm specializing in the automotive sector, I was overjoyed.

Learning how to make a decent cup of tea was a good way to start off in a British working environment, as I found out; I quickly learned to serve my colleagues with their particular combinations of sugar and milk. As I learned the intricacies of tea serving, I also began to develop an understanding of public relations, writing press releases, and managing media databases. I also contributed to several blog posts on the company website. My supervisor and colleagues were always willing to help when I had questions, sharing their knowledge of business matters with me openly.

What I did in a work day varied: ranging from scheduling online publications to archiving articles that were relevant to our clients. Sometimes I worked on the media database to update press and business contacts for particular clients; sometimes I would complete a series of writing exercises in a workbook designed by my supervisor. My supervisor scheduled time with me to review my progress and give me feedback on the press releases I had written. This variety and oversight helped me get up to speed on relevant business matters. Looking back on this time, it certainly helped that I brought a strong passion for, and a good grasp of, the automotive industry with me; all those years of reading automobile magazines were certainly being put to good use! It was just a pity that time went by so quickly.

From my internship and time in London, I improved my communication skills and learned lots about PR, which I was able to take advantage of after my semester abroad when I took on a temporary position as a writer for Oneshift.com, one of Singapore’s leading automotive portals.

I developed a soft spot for London through my internship and time with CAPA. As my semester ended, I felt confident that I would be back (as a tourist at the very least) but quickly a graduate school opportunity presented itself. This time, my academic focus was transportation, although my

A HOBBY TURNED INTO A CAREER:Three years ago, I studied and interned in London through the CAPA-University of Buffalo program.

Sometimes, when I pause to think about what a good decision I made to apply to the program, I realize that those three months played a key role in shaping the direction my life has taken.

XX

Page 57: CAPA The Global Education Network Magazine 2016

social science and liberal arts background from the University at Buffalo enabled me to bring a unique perspective to my application. At the graduate level, academic qualifications are only one aspect of being admitted; personal and work experiences are crucial to acceptance. I am certain that my experiences in London and the internship undoubtedly gave me an edge over other applicants.

And so, in 2014 I fulfilled my wish to return to the city as a student again, this time to pursue my Master’s in Transport and City Planning at University College London. Luck would have it that Transport for London decided to brand 2014 as the ‘Year of the Bus’ in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the original Routemaster buses.

As my time in graduate school came to an end, I embarked on a job search, hoping to remain in London. One day, the Executive Chairman from my undergraduate internship messaged me on LinkedIn to say that one of their clients had advertised for a position which my supervisor felt I would be suited for and that is how I met my current employer.

I am now a business development intern with the automotive division of BYD, a leading name in the green energy sector. BYD has a presence in electric cars and buses in the UK and Europe. It is very much a dream job for me, one that I would have

thought unlikely, given my undergraduate degree in psychology. I am excited to be able to promote sustainable mobility in cities through a wider use of zero-emission vehicles. As I write this I am in Rotterdam, working at BYD’s regional headquarters for a short stint, and am all set for a permanent position in London.

To offer some advice to students on study abroad programs: “Do not be afraid to pursue your interests or try something new. Have a positive attitude, work hard, and dream big. You never know when the opportunity will come knocking.”

I am glad how one thing developed into another and have the CAPA-UB program and my internship company to thank for paving the path to where I am today.

STUDY ABROAD ALUMNA INTERVIEW: VERONIQUE LOUISSAINT

While studying abroad with CAPA in London, Veronique, a Framingham State

University student and Haitian native, discovered how much she valued a

connection to an international community; this discovery provided the seeds to her

future, both professionally and personally. After studying abroad, Veronique was

chosen as a representative to the Milan Expo 2015 –a global event with 140

participating countries.

Recently, CAPA World Blog spoke with this passionate CAPA alum.

CAPA World: Tell us a bit about yourself.

Veronique Louissaint: My name is Veronique. I live in Massachusetts but I’m originally from Haiti. I had the wonderful opportunity to study abroad in London with CAPA. This experience showed me the direction I wanted to pursue—personally and career-wise. It ignited my love for traveling, networking, and experiencing new cultures. Upon my return, I realized I had an immense passion for the international lifestyle and traveling quickly became my new hobby even though, before studying abroad, I was scared to even leave the state. Now I count the days until my next trip!

CW: What was it like growing up in Haiti? What are some of the memories that stand out for you?

VL: My memories of my life in Haiti are filled with normal adolescent activities: of communing with family, going to church, and taking trips to the marketplace. I was happy –I played with friends and reveled over good ice cream. Looking back at it now, though, I realize that my parents shielded me from how things really were. My parents knew that they did not want to raise their children where there was a high rate of poverty and crime, and an absence of law enforcement. For example, the simple act of going to the marketplace posed a threat to one’s life, as being robbed at gunpoint was common. Knowing this now, I am grateful to my parents for being brave enough to leave the only country that they knew in order to create a better life for me and my siblings.

CW: You moved to the U.S. when you were 9 years old. What was your first impression of this new country?

VL: When I arrived in the United States, the climate was definitely something I was not accustomed to. I went from an environment that was close to 90°F all year long to a country that was 30°F at the time, with continuously fluctuating temperatures. Just weeks after arriving, I contracted a terrible fever; when my parents took me to the health center, the doctor informed my parents that it was due to the drastic climate change. Although my fever raged on for another couple of days, the medicine I had been prescribed helped to cure me. This was a surprise for us. My first impression of the U.S. was that the country,

as a whole, was more sympathetic to their sick.

CW: Did you continue to follow any Haitian traditions after moving?

VL: My family continued to cook Haitian meals, and my mother spoke to us in her native tongue: French Creole. Additionally, we attended a Haitian church that helped to cultivate and preserve our culture where Haitian songs, hymns, and prayers were taught, heard, and experienced.

CW: Did your multicultural childhood inspire your decision to study abroad?

VL: Being Haitian did not influence my decision to study abroad; however, I knew that with my desolate past and upbringing, I wanted to find success in the field I pursued.

BY STUDYING ABROAD, I FOUND

MY FUTURE UNFOLDING IN A WAY THAT WOULD

NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE WITHOUT THAT FIRST TRIP.

CW: How and when did you make the decision to study abroad?

VL: I wanted to study abroad because I knew that it would give me a leg up in the business world. I did not want to limit myself to only American business; I wanted to expose myself to other countries’ methods of conducting business affairs. The decision to go abroad was made final when my advisor at school reassured me that I could do it. From then on, I made the choice of furthering my education and career in London.

CW: How did your family and friends react?

VL: I am very close with my siblings, and when I had told them that I planned to study abroad, they discouraged me from doing so. They worried that I would get lost, not be protected, and get sick abroad. I had originally planned to travel to China, but when I decided to study in London instead, my family worried less, especially as I would be studying in an English-speaking country.

CW: Did you connect with the Haitian community while you were in London?

VL: I was open to meeting other Haitians in London, but I only had the pleasure of meeting one other Haitian, with whom I am still in touch today. Although I did not meet a Haitian community per se, I did meet other Caribbean islanders and was delighted to learn about their cultures.

CW: How has your career developed since you returned to the U.S.? Did your experience abroad in any way shape your career goals and aspirations?

VL: When I returned to the U.S., I had this realization that my future career had to be in Europe. I had fallen in love with the European lifestyle and work environment, and felt that my future should be cultivated there. By studying abroad, I found my future unfolding in a way that would not have been possible without that first trip.

CW: You were given an amazing opportunity to participate in Expo Milano 2015 –a global showcase of idea sharing on sustainable practices to provide food for everyone on the planet! How did you hear about this opportunity? What inspired you to apply? VL: I heard about the opportunity from CAPA. When I came back from studying abroad, I emailed CAPA about other internships or job opportunities overseas that I might apply to and CAPA told me about Expo Milano 2015. I immediately applied because of my strong desire to build my career—and life. Expo Milano 2015 takes part in amazing work and projects about food sustainability; I just had to apply! CW: Tell us a bit more about the event itself. What did you do in Milan? What did you gain from this experience, both in terms of personal and professional growth?

VL: During Expo Milano 2015, I represented the next generation of leaders for our country. We talked with the public, breaking down the parts of food sustainability, helping people understand the importance of the topic.

This opportunity allowed me to connect with more people around the world who want to make a difference.

A FOREIGNER IN A FOREIGN LAND NO MOREALUM:

During my first days in Florence, I felt like an alien from a different planet. The people I encountered spoke a language I didn’t understand and seemed to carry themselves differently from the people on my home planet of Chicago. But maybe what was most interesting was the atmosphere of the environment: everything looked, smelled, and sounded so different!

Quickly, I realized I was beginning an adventure that would change my life forever.

I was blessed to have my entire trip funded through scholarships and financial aid. I wanted to take advantage of this incredible opportunity to be somewhere completely new. Early on, I decided not to waste my time by experiencing what I already knew. I wanted to learn everything I could about the strange new land in which

I found myself.

I wandered Florence, usually alone, intentionally distancing myself from other American students. I engaged with strangers, using my very limited Italian, to ask for directions or strike up conversations. I tried new foods and sought out ways to connect with Florentines, sacrificing the comfort of English and what I already knew for the opportunity to fully engage with and integrate myself in the Italian culture.

A FOREIGNER IN A FOREIGN LAND NO MORE

Interestingly, I discovered that embracing this alien environment provided me with the chance to explore who I truly am. This exploration helped me to discover, define, and accept details about the core of my identity. The more I learned about myself, the more I looked to engage with new people, learning about what they thought about the space we were co-inhabiting and the world at large. For the first time, I felt myself to be part of an international community.

Living in a homestay really helped this journey of discovery I had embarked upon. Actually, it never occurred to me that I would travel 4,700 miles to Florence and not connect with a local family. My determination to use my living situation as another chance to immerse myself in Florence was rewarded by my placement with a lovely host family. Not only did I get to know them and practice Italian, I witnessed and participated in a completely different life rhythm. My immediate family is very close, but watching the high regard that my host family gave each other inspired me to love my family even more. I took my hunger to learn more about the culture a step further. Since this was my last semester of college, I had the liberty to take whatever courses I wanted in order to fulfill electives. Using that freedom to my advantage, I took as many courses about Italian culture as possible, including Italian language, Cross-Cultural Psychology, Cultural Anthropology, Art History, and Beginning Drawing. These courses equipped me to explore and take risks, further enriching my experience.

Even though it was difficult, it was rewarding to become so engulfed in the Italian way of life. My experience studying abroad in Florence was beyond my wildest dreams! And I must confess, that after my time in such an amazing place, I discovered I was an alien no more.
