DIRECTOR’S  NOTE

Candide  is  a  musical  theater  classic.  It  is  also  a  nightmare  to  stage.

When  I  first  found  out  that  CMTS  had  acquired  the  show  rights,  I  was  thrilled  that  I  would  be  able  to  bring  one  of  my  favorite  works  to  life.  However,  the  panic  quickly  set  in:  how  would  I  stage  a  show  with  so  many  characters,  so  many  different  locales,  and  relatively  large  pit  in  a  black  box?  Further,  what  perspective  could  I  offer  that  would  justify  this  performance?  I  considered  several  approaches,  until  one  day,  while  listening  to  the  overture,  I  began  imagining  a  group  of  actors  preparing  for  a  performance.  Thus,  the  frame  for  our  production  was  born.  The  play’s  central  idea  -‐  that  no  single,  neat  philosophical  system  can  adequately  address  the  cruelty  and  chaos  of  life  –  can  sometimes  be  lost  among  the  songs  and  jokes.  My  hope  was  that  acknowledging  that  we  are  watching  a  work  of  art  –  another  way  of  making  sense  of  life  –  would  ensure  that  this  idea  was  a  constant  throughout  the  show,  rather  than  an  afterthought.

Directing  this  show  has  been  an  incredibly  fulfilling  experience,  and  I’m  so  grateful  to  have  gotten  the  opportunity  to  explore  these  ideas  with  such  a  talented  group  of  people.  Thanks  to  Emile,  the  CMTS  board,  the  brilliant  creative  and  production  teams,  and  my  hilarious,  ever-‐inspiring  cast.  They  have  truly  made  this  (wait  for  it)  the  Best  of  All  Possible  Shows.

Rivka  Friedlander  (Ensemble,  GS/JTS  '13)  plays  many  roles  in  life,  as  well  as  in  the  ensemble  of  this  show.  She  thanks  her  family  and  friends  for  their  support,  always.    Carolina  Garrigo  (Asst.  Director,  CC  '15)  is  single.  She  loves  Candide  and  everyone  and  everything  in  it.  Bagels  and  J.Crew  scarves  are  on  her  must  list  and  so  are  Tom  Hanks  and  Kevin  Bacon  circa  the  1980s.  Honestly,  she’s  just  biding  her  time  until  the  new  season  of  Sherlock.  P.S.  Cut  loose.  Footloose.      Michael  Gildin  (Vocal  Director,  CC  '15)  feels  vindicated  that  he  is  finally  a  part  of  a  production  of  an  obscure  musical.  Somewhat  accidentally  joining  this  adventure  and  consequently  working  with  this  immensely  passionate,  intelligent,  and  humble  team  has  caused  him  to  abandon  cynicism  and  realize  that  “Life  is  Happiness  Indeed.”    Becca  Guthrie  (Asst.  Costume  Designer/Hair  and  Makeup,  BC  '16)  is  thrilled  to  be  involved  in  her  first  CMTS  show!  After  making  her  debut  as  the  Christmas  tree  in  the  first  grade,  Becca  has  been  in  love  with  musicals.  Ask  her  to  name  the  last  twenty  winners  of  the  Tony’s  “Best  Musical.”  She  will  most  likely  be  able  to  tell  you.  Thanks  to  Shelley,  Ally,  and  Ilana  for  all  the  opportunities!      Grant  Gutierrez  (Pangloss/Governor/  Narrator,  CC  '15)  is  excited  to  be  back  on  stage  living  in  his  imagination  in  his  first  Columbia  University  production.  The  people  of  the  theatre  never  fail  to  entertain  and  the  entire  process  of  this  show  has  been  a  delight.  A  hug  and  kiss  to  his  mother  who  flew  from  his  (former)  home  in  quiet  Northern  California  to  see  the  show,  and  a  warm  welcome  to  you  all.  Enjoy!

Kyle  Johnson  (Ensemble,  CC  '16)  is  thrilled  to  be  in  Candide,  his  first  show  at  Columbia!  He  would  like  to  thank  his  family  for  supporting  him  (and  for  seeing  all  his  shows)  and  this  best  of  all  possible  casts  and  crews  for  being  so  ridiculously  talented.    John  Kenney  (Ensemble,  CC  '13)  is  a  Philosophy  major  focusing  on  answering  the  ontological  question  that  is  Taylor  Swift.  John  would  like  to  thank  everyone  in  the  production  for  their  hard  work,  and  his  family  for  their  never-‐ending  support.      Cameron  Lemley  (Ensemble,  SEAS  '16)  is  very  excited  to  be  performing  in  Candide,  the  best  of  all  possible  musicals!  He  is  studying  astrophysics  and  spends  most  of  his  free  time  perusing  the  city  on  a  great  quest  to  find  the  perfect  plate  of  chicken  curry.    Hilary  Mogul  (Electrician,  SEAS  '15)  used  to  be  really  afraid  of  heights.    Now,  she  feels  more  at  home  on  the  black  box  grid  than  her  own  (cramped)  dorm  room.    Her  other  hobbies  include  staring  off  into  space  and  overthinking  everything  she  does.    Piper  Rasmussen  (Old  Lady,  BC  '16)  is.  Favorite  roles  back  home  in  Ohio  include  Andromache  (The  Trojan  Women),  Stephana  (The  Merchant  of  Venice)  and  the  Mock  Turtle  (Alice  in  Wonderland).  Piper  loves  purple,  puns,  playwriting,  and  (unsurprisingly)  every  perfect,  peerless  person  who  took  part  in  this  production  of  Candide.    Christine  Rosenblatt  (Cunegonde,  BC  '16)  hails  from  Long  Island,  and  is  thrilled  to  be  making  her  college  theater

Unfathomable Candide Quotations “There cannot possibly be an effect without a cause”….”noses were made to support spectacles, hence we have spectacles.”…”Legs were made to be breeched, and so we have breeches.” Rivka was made to perform hence we have Performances. From Pepper to Little Red and Little Red to Urine Town and Urine Town to Anne and Anne to Daisy and Daisy to Hudel and Hudel to UV and now Candide, the show goes on and on and on. “Which is worse”? … “having a buttock cut off, running the gauntlet in the Bulgar army, being flogged and hanged”… or missing Rivka’s performances? -- “It’s a hard question” … since “man was bound to live either in convulsions of misery or in the lethargy of boredom” I choose theatrical entertainment, the best form of both. And “since all events are linked together in the best of possible worlds” attendance tonight supports the performance and the performance supports our attendance.

From which we infer….

Always fly United Airlines Optimism is folly.

Philosophical speculation is useless. Religion is hypocrisy.

The power of money corrupts. Rivka is entertainment.
