When our engineers were asked to refine, they redefined.

Introducing all four models in the revolutionary new Cayenne family – the 2011 Cayenne, Cayenne S, Cayenne Turbo, and the remarkable Cayenne S Hybrid. For our engineers, nothing was off-limits except the spirit behind the Porsche crest. Lightweight construction cuts weight by up to 185 kg. An auto start/stop function, Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), and a new 8-speed Tiptronic S transmission reduce fuel consumption by up to 23% (NEDC)*, while raising Cayenne performance to remarkable new heights. This is what happens when engineers have free reign.

Read Suzanne’s thoughts on

modern cottage style.web

When I put the final flourishes on my first house 12 years ago, I thought I’d found the look that was, without a doubt, 100 per cent me. It was a pretty city cottage with a Parisian apartment feel and a hint of a modern edge. I settled in thinking, “This place suits me perfectly; why would I ever want to leave?”

Then I met my husband, Arriz, and had to start all over again. He lived in a true raw loft, long before all the warehouses in Toronto had been snapped up by developers. My pretty silk drapes and ticking upholstery did not easily mingle with his industrial shelving, vintage leather couch and minimal aesthetic. After a little experimenting and a lot of compromise, our tastes and belongings have blended into a happy marriage of contrasts that’s become the core of my personal style. I know he likes it, too!

But I know I won’t — or can’t — stop there. With all the pictures of gorgeous spaces and products crossing my desk, trying on different looks is an occupational hazard. One day I’m excited about the stack of weathered wicker chairs in our lobby; the next I can’t get designer Steven Gambrel’s modern marble bathrooms out of my head. (Watch for one of his projects in our next issue.) If only we could have a house for every look we loved!

Happily, over time I’ve learned it’s the journey, not the destination, that makes it fun. And to keep from getting overwhelmed by all the options out there, I’ve come up with my own style manifesto. I believe Great Style is:• Authentic: It’s okay to find inspiration in another person’s work, but you have to make it your own somehow.• Unique: The most memorable spaces tell us something about the occupants. • Affordable: Decorating a home shouldn’t cost more than you can handle. There’s no point blowing a bundle on an antique dining table you spotted on 1stDibs.com if you won’t be able to buy chairs to put around it.• Effortless: Style should fit with the way you live. Don’t turn your home into a mini Versailles if you have kids, a hockey-playing spouse and a Lab to boot.• Confident: Above all, be bold in knowing your taste. If you choose things you love, you’ll find a way to make them work together.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?

CHERYL GUSHUE: “I love combining old and new. I like to choose an era for inspiration and then modernize it. This goes for both fashion and interiors.”Style has never eluded Cheryl, who, since having

studied fashion design over two decades ago,

has conquered the beauty business. Her lengthy

resumé includes hair and makeup styling, a

swimwear line and writing for Flare and Fashion magazines. For this issue, she was the on-set

makeup artist for “Curated Cool” (page 76).

VIRGINIA MACDONALD: “Right now I’m loving the style in London. It’s cheeky, fun and well-crafted.” Though she is well practiced at the art of taking

gorgeous food photographs, as she did for this

issue’s food feature (page 88), Virginia wasn’t

always inspired by the edible. “When I was a kid,

I was a really picky eater … I tried my fi rst dill pickle

at 17!” Her work has appeared in the pages of Better Homes and Gardens, Glow and Toronto Life, and is

now featured at Toronto gallery Art Interiors.

JEAN LONGPRÉ: “I would say I am eclectic, and I like to mix it up: country, industrial, modern.”After 30 years in the industry, this Montreal-based

photographer has found his focus working primarily

with interiors and food, the latter practically being

the family business — his brother François is co-

owner of iconic cookware store Les Touilleurs. His

work has appeared in publications such as Living In Style, several cookbooks, and for this issue he

captured “Global Glamour” (page 82).

H&H AUGUST 201018

I do enjoy your decorating ideas, but I thoroughly enjoyed the giggle you gave me by calling a chicken incubator a chicken coop (“The House Specialty,” June)!— DONNA SAUNDERS, via email

I just made the No-Knead Bread recipe (“Entertaining,” June), and it turned out spectacularly! It was so beautiful I took photos: a perfect rustic loaf. I know it’s only bread, but my sense of accomplishment was overwhelming. — ANGELA WHEELER, Port Perry, Ont.

The design featured in “Breaking Ground” (May) was both beautiful and inspiring. I understand the structure has many “green” features, but 6,500 square feet of living space for four people is just not green. That space still needs to be furnished and covered with finishes inside and out. A smaller design by this talented architect would certainly have made a more significant green statement.— LANCE C., via email

I’m getting quite tired of seeing homeowners in their bare feet. Isn’t that fake relaxed concept getting tired?— L. HORVARTH, via email

When Virginia Johnson turned her popular illustrations (which

have graced the pages of Vogue as well as stationery for Kate Spade)

into colourful silk-screened clothing and textiles, her quirky style

was snapped up by the best boutiques. Now, the Toronto designer

is offering a collection of her drawings as hand-screened art prints.

Three options — Shells (left), Turtle and Seaweed — bring to walls

the same qualities that made her clothing a hit: wit, whimsy and

sophistication. In 11" x 15" and 22" x 30" prints. $75 to $195 each. Visit virginiajohnson.com.

While the fashion crowd is notoriously fickle, it has never wavered in its praise of Hervé Van der Straeten. The Parisian designer started out creating jewelry for Thierry Mugler, Yves Saint Laurent and Jean Paul Gaultier. Since then, he has collaborated with Roger Vivier on the interior design of its boutiques, designed the Dior J’Adore perfume bottle and created Guerlain’s Kiss Kiss lipstick case, a golden column of melting cubes that’s at once sexy and substantial — qualities that also describe his furniture and lighting. “Creating jewelry and objects is great research for designing larger scale pieces, and vice versa,” he says. In each case, the starting point is the same. “Fantasy comes first, then you can start thinking about pragmatic details.” Jewelry sold at Holt Renfrew, visit holtrenfrew.com; furniture available through Galerie Van der Straeten, visit vanderstraeten.fr.

PROJECT: Add pretty dressmaker details to a ho-hum shower curtain

MATERIALS: Plain cotton shower curtain, 2½ yd. fabric, sewing

machine, thread (measurements are for a standard 70" x 72" curtain)

Update your look at home with five trends that break the style barrier.

CURTAIN CALL

PRÊT-À-PORTER

1. SEW ON VALANCE A few easy

embellishments give

a plain, inexpensive

shower curtain a

designer look. Begin

by sewing an 8"-wide

valance (hemmed

along the top, bottom

and sides) across the

top of the curtain.

Leave valance

unstitched over top

of each grommet, so

shower curtain rings

can still be fed

through the holes,

which will be hidden

by the valance.

2. GATHER FABRIC INTO FRILLSUsing pinking shears,

cut four strips of

fabric that are each

3" wide and 6' long.

Set the stitch size on

your sewing machine

to the longest

possible length. In

the centre of each

fabric strip, stitch two

rows, ¼" apart, the

full length of the strip.

Working from both

ends, gently pull

each thread until the

fabric gathers into

a soft ruffle.

3. SEW ON TRIMPin the ruffled fabric

onto the shower

curtain, spaced about

3" apart. Sew them

onto the shower

curtain with one line

of stitching down the

centre of each strip,

then pull out the

threads previously

used to make the

fabric into ruffles.

(Cut out a few steps

by getting a

seamstress to do the

sewing or use store-

bought ribbon

instead of fabric for a

more tailored look.)

If only I knew then what I know now. Maybe I would not have made some of the decorating decisions that I later came to regret.

In those days, I wanted only the latest in furniture and finishes. My taste wasn’t developed enough to know I didn’t have any. I had a pretty good eye for balance and scale, and I knew what was “in” and that I wanted it. How to get the look was my only quest.

I didn’t know that too much of any one thing is just too much. I would fall in love with a trend and go after it, sometimes to excess. I remember when glass-topped tables came into fashion. I think I had one in every room. Today, I know that one is enough and for me, the smaller the better. In fact, any piece of furniture that is too heavy to move when the mood strikes is not a good idea in our house.

I went through a similar learning curve with painted furniture. It can be fresh and fun to have coloured pieces, especially in a country scheme, but too much of it can feel like a one-stop shopping spree.

In my quest for style, I often forgot about comfort altogether. I made so many mistakes in this department that my new rule when shopping for a dining chair is to buy one and test drive it through a dinner party. When I find myself admiring a dining room with polished-leather chairs in a magazine, I now remind myself of the times that I have slid off my seat or squirmed through a dinner party,

trying to stay put. Style was the motive when I bought a loose,

woven sisal mat for my dining room. Bad idea. Watching one guest almost tip over taught me that you must be able to easily slide a chair away from the table without the legs getting caught in the weave of a rug.

Most of all, I didn’t know that trendy styles will date faster than you can imagine. Now I do. I still peruse magazines, and there is always a wish list on the go. Like a dress that I’m not sure about, I will mull over each thing, then wait to see what falls off the list before I take the plunge:

1. A chevron wood floor. I cannot pick up a magazine without admiring this signature French-style flooring in Paris apartments, often in a warm nut brown shade. I just saw a chevron floor in French white oak by Itlas at the BAB showroom in Montreal. It’s engineered, but it has a vintage feel, while the colour makes it fresh and modern.2. Wishbone chairs by Hans Wegner circa 1949 with woven-rush seats. So simple and airy, I can’t figure out why it’s taken me this long to appreciate them. This is the 60th anniversary of the Wishbone chair, and to celebrate, 12 new colours are being introduced, including blues and citrus-like greens. Look for them at carlhansen.com.3. with soft grey linen cushions, these are an updated version of the kind you’d find on a wide veranda.4. A Bertoia Diamond chair from the ’50s in chrome. I like to see touches of mid-century modern design in casual rooms. 5. A room panelled in white-painted tongue-and-groove. I would cover every wall, and the ceiling. This is my dream for a country house, and we’re doing it right now in the newest lottery showhouse, opening this September in Oakville. Watch houseandhome.com for details.6. A TV behind my bathroom mirror. Yes, really! It’s called a Blue Vision Canada Mirror TV and it’s amazing. It’s distributed by Radiant Audio Design, and you can learn all about it at radiantaudiodesign.com. 7. A new vanity to replace the bulky one in our principal bathroom. I’m looking for something light, marble-topped and open. All through the house, I am finding new ways to stash stuff so I can replace all the “closed to the floor” cabinets and furniture with light and leggy pieces. 8. A wall-mounted pot filler or spigot tap over my stove. This is one trend I wish I had jumped on. When it first hit the scene, I thought the idea was silly. Surely I could carry a pot to the sink? But my pasta pot has become huge and too heavy to fill without thinking twice.9. One open flame gas fireplace with ceramic logs. We have several fireplaces, all wood-burning, and they’re a lot of work. I have wanted to convert some of them, but someone in our house is a purist…. At least let me have one that is clean and easy to light. The one in the bedroom, for example?10. A table in my kitchen. I loved when we gathered around my grandma’s kitchen table, crowded and happy. I am so over eating at an island. I want the charm of chairs and a table set with flowers right there in the middle of my kitchen. As it turns out, having a table in the kitchen is a trend right now, soon to be big! I hope that’s not why I want one….

I was disheartened to see the frightfully thin model in “Trendwatch” (June). With so many young girls and women struggling with weight and self-image issues, I am offended by the ongoing display of anorexic women on runways. Only a shift in social conscience, and the determination not to promote this stereotype of “Fashion Model” will end its acceptance as a norm. Thanks for an otherwise great magazine.— RANDA WRIGHT, Eden Mills, Ont.

I always enjoy your magazine with its inspiring ideas, but I would like to ask that you please, please not use photos of models like the horribly thin woman on the last page of the May issue (“Trendwatch”). Although you are primarily a decorating magazine, I feel you should still be promoting a healthy lifestyle for Canadian women.— LESLIE MILLS, Ottawa

Publisher’s note: I wholeheartedly agree! — Lynda Reeves

Editor’s note: When House & Home introduced “Trendwatch” back in 1995, our goal was to show readers how trends develop. In fact, most home trends are influenced by what we see on the runway, so it’s important to know what fashion designers are showcasing. That said, I appreciate your feedback and agree that many of the runway models are often far too thin. We will make even more of an effort to feature models who look healthy. — Suzanne Dimma

I live in a cedar log cabin on the shores of Prince Edward Island. I would love to see an article based on wood and warmth instead of all white and beige.— LINDA YOUNG, via email

I’m a longtime reader of Canadian House & Home but I am also from Quebec. I’m beginning to feel that this magazine should be called Ontario House & Home.— KATJA DOHRENDORF, via email

You may enjoy our French sister publication, Maison & Demeure, which features Quebec interiors and products.

Mexican RenaissanceAntique treasures shine against a restrained backdrop.Produced by ANDREA MILLS | Text by JAIMIE NATHAN

Richly textured woods, burnished metals and antique furniture give this luxurious principal bedroom suite great style and a sense of history. This new approach to Mexican design, by Jorge Almada and Anne-Marie Midy in San Miguel de Allende, references the country’s cultural heritage with a light hand. Spare white walls and a modern metal chair are fresh counterpoints to chipped architectural remnants, a metal filigreed lantern, intricate candelabras and a faded fresco. Cool terracotta floor tiles, a staple of Mexican interiors, look sophisticated in a darker hue with the richness of leather. With an inviting writing desk, a serene bed and a clawfoot tub, this multifunctional bedroom is a soothing retreat.

Subdued paletteRich leather floor tiles contrast with neutral

walls, while subtle sea-green accents enliven

the space. Leather floor tile in Modena Wine, $11/sq.ft., through Torlys; paint, Rockport Gray (HC-105), Decorators White (CC-20), Harrisburg Green (HC-132), Benjamin Moore.

BALANCE COLOURS“We thought having a big pink

sofa would be hilarious, so

I balanced that with the bold

turquoise fabric that covers the

vintage aluminum chairs — my

twist on the ubiquitous bergere

chair. In the living room, we

installed a direct-vent gas

fireplace finished in edge-stone

tiles and then painted it white.

The tiles were originally a pinky-

beige colour that kind of looked

like cat-sick. The white-painted

stone references the mid-

century style we like, but not

in a slavish way.” Montego fireplace, Odyssey Fireplaces; ottoman, Bev Hisey; rug, Sears; vintage side table, Zig Zag.

THE BACK STORY “Let there be light!” was the house-hunting mantra of trendspotting stylist and H&H columnist Arren Williams when he and his partner, David Pimentel, an elementary school teacher, came across this 1960s box of a house two summers ago. The pair had grown tired of the lack of light in their funky old Victorian (featured in H&H, February 2008). The immense windows of this house immediately sold them on the space, though its aesthetic was awful.

“Everybody thought the place was the ugliest thing they had ever seen,” says Arren. Once used as a rooming house, it had been left to wrack and ruin, with an awkwardly chopped-up main floor and a basement that could have been the set of a horror movie. But Arren, whose plugged-in design sense helped him to see past the chaos, embraced the sturdy house as a blank canvas. Known for his fun style and amazing resourcefulness, Arren is a veritable encyclopedia of unique and affordable design tips. Here, he shares the secrets to his home’s vivacious retro-fuelled style.

In a major seven-month reno, he and David, with the help of their trusted contractor Cera Stone,

GO WITH WHAT YOU LOVE “I fell in love with the pattern of this wallpaper

and was determined to use it. Inspired by a

vintage 1950s fabric, it really fits in with our

aesthetic. And its livable, soft metallic tones

add warmth and offset other colours in the

room, like the bold turquoise of the vintage

lamp and the purple in Spot’s dog bed.”

Manderley wallpaper, Graham & Brown; Bestå storage cabinet, Ikea; Tivoli radio, Lenbrook.

PRIORITIZE FUNCTION “We wanted to use the second bedroom

as a spot to hang out, like a library-cum-

dressing room. The secondhand sofa was

covered in granny floral, and the wood was

a golden oak colour, so we painted it white

and reupholstered it in a great linen.”

Mommy Dearest rug, Bev Hisey; furniture refinishing, Beresford.

Flank a sofa with ready-made

bookshelves to create a cosy reading nook

GET CREATIVE“The dining area is quite narrow, so we made

a table to fit the space out of old scaffolding

planks and a vintage metal trestle base. The

Thonet look-alike chairs — there are two

originals in the mix, too — are Value Village

and Goodwill finds that have been sprayed

and reupholstered to match.” Doors, Jeld-Wen; upholstering, Daniel Nguyen-Moreira.

BE FLEXIBLE“We found out that replacing the original

stair railing with glass and steel would cost at

least $8,000, so we decided to embrace the

kitsch. David painstakingly repainted all the

spindles, and we installed a new vinyl

handrail. The art wall features a playful mix

of works like a paint by numbers clown next

to a David Hockney poster next to what looks

like a modernist oil painting but is actually a

dropcloth that was turned into a painting.”

BASEMENT FIRST FLOOR SECOND FLOOR

ADD TEXTURE“The floor-to-ceiling ribbed-glass tile wall

adds lovely texture and sparkle that frames

the window. We stole some space from the

living area to create the breakfast bar, which

is also perfect for entertaining. High-gloss

white cabinetry, a Corian countertop and

stainless steel appliances create a classic and

simple look.” KraftMaid cabinets, glass tiles, countertop, flooring, The Home Depot; cabinet installation, The Home Depot Installation Services; appliances, Jenn-Air; espresso machine, Nespresso.

JAZZ UP SMALL SPACES “Originally, the house had a full bathroom right

off the kitchen. You could wash your lettuce in

the shower if you wanted to! We kept a teeny-

weeny powder room on the main floor instead.

I found this groovy wallpaper, which looks like

1970s album cover art, in Paris. It was perfect

for the powder room.” Wallpaper, BHV; mirror, Walmart; Daltile subway tiles, The Home Depot.

SIZE IT TO FIT“The tiny third bedroom was turned into an

office. We made an affordable custom desk

that runs wall-to-wall out of a piece of glass

cut to size and placed on top of some Ikea

trestles.” Rug, Bev Hisey; Vika Lerberg trestles, Ikea; vintage Howard Miller wall clock, vintage table lamp, Zig Zag; corkboards, HomeSense.

MIX UP DISPLAYS “We found this vintage dresser for $15 and

had it sprayed white to work in our reading

room. It displays a real mashup of items,

including a pair of Fu dogs that we picked

up in Macau for $10 (here, they cost about

$300), and some back-painted glass artwork

by British artist Zebedee Helm that my

brother gave me.” Furniture refinishing, Beresford; Love print, Bold & Noble.

BE OPEN TO THE UNUSUAL “My mom bought me the lamp as a gift for

my 40th birthday. When I saw it, I thought it

was the best thing since sliced bread! It’s so

gorgeous and bizarre. We found the dresser

at a used-furniture shop and sprayed it the

same colour as the two bedside tables, which

cost only $10 each at Value Village.”

KEEP THE BEDROOM SERENE“In the bedroom, we layered textural

elements — grasscloth wallpaper, cream

velvet drapery and David Hicks fabric on

the giant headboard and bedframe — to

create a warm, relaxed feel.” Upholstery, Daniel Nguyen-Moreira; grasscloth, Design by Color; pendant, Studio Pazo.

STICK WITH TRADITION WHEN NECESSARY“The shower tiles are porcelain, which

mimics a polished Carrara marble, laid in

a staggered pattern that has a more

traditional look. I found the stool for some

crazy cheap price and said, ‘That’s coming

home with me now!’ I added in bright green

towels to keep it fun (right).” Stool, HomeSense; tile, The Home Depot; shower fixtures, Kohler; Tivoli Pal radio, Lenbrook.

MAX OUT STORAGE“In the principal bedroom, we

supplanted a teeny-weeny closet with

this fantastic new closet system. David

and I are the same size and literally

share a wardrobe. We have over

50 pairs of sneakers (left), so this keeps

us organized.” Wardrobe system, Ikea.

BRING LUXURY HOME “Once you’ve experienced a fabulous hotel

bathroom, you really want that luxury at

home! After getting rid of its pink tiles, tub,

toilet and sink, we made the space a bit

bigger by stealing 18" from the third

bedroom. Two sinks prevent us from

elbowing each other, and the mirrors visually

open up the space, which still isn’t huge.”

Cabinets, The Home Depot Installation Services; towel, Ikea; sconces, CB2.

Jason MacIsaac converted an industrial workshop into edgy design store Ministry of the Interior. Red Acapulco chair, $435.

Fokus Fabric pillows, $130 each.

People with a penchant for all things cutting-edge find

a kindred spirit in Jason MacIsaac. Like his clients, who

include visionary ad agencies and film companies, he turns

edgy products into must-haves. His shop’s gallery-style

approach to home design reveals his roots in the

contemporary art scene: after studying photography and

sculpture at the Ontario College of Art & Design, Jason ran

his own gallery, The Art Firm, in Toronto until 2002, where

he got behind-the-scenes experience selling new work to

an avant-garde clientele. “This isn’t an art space though, it’s

a design space. I don’t have the same constraints,” he says

of the store’s moody industrial vibe. “But I might paint it all

white soon. We’ll see what influences me.”

STYLE UPDATE My wife is after me to wallpaper the

bedroom. I’ll choose a print from Tres Tintas or something

from Vivienne Westwood’s collection for Cole & Son.

FAVOURITE BLOGS For an hour every day, I read blogs.

A former actor, Peter Wilds still brings a theatricality to his

work. No wonder, then, that he cites American designer

and Regency revivalist Kelly Wearstler as a style idol —

“She’s got guts; her look isn’t for the faint of heart” — and is

drawn to dramatic juxtapositions, preferring to pair vintage

with modern, luxury with lowbrow, and elegant with edgy.

Whether creating a space from scratch or dressing it up with

a few key accessories, he believes that more is more. “I love

to layer fabrics and wallpapers with lots of reflective surfaces

and dramatic lighting,” he says. The in-house designer for

The Cross, he sees the store as his calling card. “It gives

people an immediate sense of who I am,” says Peter. “It’s

a brilliant way of starting a collaboration.”

FIRST STYLE MEMORY At age 10, I started to rearrange

my bedroom regularly. That’s when I realized the potential

in reinventing a space.

RETAIL INSPIRATION The J.Crew store on Madison Avenue

A shared delight in whimsical prints and cheerful colours

injects a sense of fun into the sophisticated style of sisters

Alexandra and Katherine Yaphe. Both followed their family

into the carpet industry — Alexandra as the owner of

Toronto’s Y&Co rug and fabric showroom, and Katherine as

designer of Oliver Yaphe rugs. Pedigree aside, their modern

appreciation for mixing quirky with refined has put them

at the forefront of chic for a new generation: Katherine’s

children’s rugs cater to the mod tot, while Y&Co has

expanded to include fashionable fabric lines such as John

Robshaw and Christopher Farr, as well as carpets by

Vanderhurd, Madeline Weinrib and more. “When I brought

in Madeline Weinrib, nobody knew who she was,” says

Alexandra. “Now, someone calls about her rugs everyday.”

STYLE ICONS Billy Baldwin, David Hicks and Andy Spade.

FAMILY ALBUM We grew up vacationing in Maine, and that

preppy sensibility had a big influence. Our house had crazy

yellow and green wallpaper in the bathroom, and a royal

blue kitchen. And, of course, lots of colourful carpets!

TRENDS

As a trend forecaster for clients like The Bay, Sandra Rojas-

Chinni plays a part in deciding the next big thing, but her

charming café and decor store, full of creamy whites and

warm wood, reflects her emphasis on lifestyle over fashion.

“Everyone loves writing on beautiful paper and drinking

from a beautiful glass. I focus on useful, simple, timeless

products,” she says. That translates to classics with du jour

flair, like matte white nesting bowls splashed with glam

gold interiors, delicate glass tumblers with just a hint of hue

and reclaimed wood furniture that would look at home in

an artist’s studio. “The common thread through everything

is ‘the good life,’” says Sandra.

NECESSARY INDULGENCES Everyday objects —

bedding, towels, dishes — should be of the best quality

you can afford. Luxury is about the little things that

enhance daily life.

GO-TO COLOUR Any shade of grey. Even when I use paint

in another colour, I add a grey undertone. I like everything

to feel slightly washed out.

EXPAT DESIGNER COLETTE VAN DEN THILLART BROUGHT A EUROPEAN SENSIBILITY TO A GUTSY RENO

OF HER FAMILY’S 70-YEAR-OLD ONTARIO COTTAGE.Text by ELLEN HIMELFARB | Photography by MICHAEL GRAYDON

When you’re about to renovate a property that’s been in your family for 70 years, reservations are understandable — even when you’re an accomplished interior designer.

As creative director of London’s NH Design, Canadian expat Colette van den Thillart works closely with society decorator and man about town Nicky Haslam (who counts Mick Jagger and Rod Stewart as clients), overhauling dozens of family homes in the U.K. — albeit those of the aristocratic sort. But this 1940s cottage near Minden, Ont., was literally too close to home, and the caution and sentimentality with which she approached the reno took everyone by surprise.

“When my husband, Leo, and I said we were going to renovate it, even my mother said, ‘For heaven’s sake, just rip it down!’” Colette says with a laugh. Her mother was no doubt appealing to

her daughter’s professional side, and Colette took her words to heart. But as the self-proclaimed “least practical one in the family,” Colette couldn’t bear to do it. “It would have been simpler to tear it down, but there were so many layers of history here. I’m not terribly sentimental, but Canadians understand how deep into your system family cottages get.” (Colette, who had worked with Brian Gluckstein in Toronto, moved to London in 2000 with Leo, a Dutch-born Canadian, when his work as an asset manager required him to be in England frequently.)

First up, Colette determined exactly what she didn’t want the cottage to be. “I didn’t want it to look too ‘done,’ or like something in the Hamptons, because I think Canadian cottages have their own vernacular. And though I’ve been living in the U.K. and picked up those influences, I wanted to be careful not to make it

look like an English country interior either.” In a compromise, the couple decided to preserve just the

original cabin — its varnished pine half-log walls and spruce ceiling darkened considerably with age and dripping sap — and build a new addition. The result is a chic, charming lakeside retreat that’s at turns dark and moody, then airy and Scandinavian — but always calm, welcoming and effortless. Colette’s vision feels fresh and yet still respectful of the cottage’s rich provenance.

And what a life this cottage has had! Colette’s great-uncle Tommy Hanson built here in the 1940s. The pine cabin, which he used as a summer getaway, had no electricity or running water, and it took “five hours and two tire changes” to get here from Toronto. He and Colette’s grandfather, George Anthon, felt at home here, having come from Norway, another wooded nation that this corner of Mountain Lake so resembled. The brothers both married and multiplied on six generous plots over four generations. The family added, piecemeal, to Tommy’s original cottage, and after Colette’s parents retired in 1990, they built themselves a new cottage next door. When Colette married, she and Leo bought Tommy’s old place.

And despite her mother’s advice, Colette

the 20-year wait for the new addition

its pine board-and-batten siding a

driftwood colour. Accents in rusty red

TREND EXPERT KAREN VON HAHN MIXES CLASSIC PRINTS, DECO

FURNITURE AND EVEN DISCO-ERA FINDS IN A WAY THAT FEELS

FRESH AND PURPOSEFUL. Text by KAREN VON HAHN | Photography by STACEY BRANDFORD

hen House & Home asked me to describe my style, my first response was, “If I could, I would have already written the book.”

As a columnist with the Toronto Star and More magazine, I write about style for a living. Over the years, I’ve opined on all things stylish for design panels, on television and radio, and now I even blog about it. But my own style, particularly that of my own home, is really my life’s work. It’s a crucial distinction, because that’s the thing about style: it’s a creative reflection of all the places you’ve been, the encounters you’ve had and the influences you’ve gathered along the way. It’s also your personal imprint, your particular point of view, which, at least in my case, is always evolving. All of which makes it rather challenging to explain in 900 words or less.

In the interest of sharing, however, here’s what I love about my home. When I first stumbled on it, we had almost given up looking. Then one morning, after dropping my children off at school, I suddenly noticed this graceful old dowager sitting demurely on its lot. Sober of design, probably 1920s, it nonetheless had long, elegant windows and looked blissfully undisturbed by anyone else’s bad

reno. Best of all (after the For Sale sign on the lawn) was that one of the few improvements the owners had made was to install an enormous ’70s swimming pool in the garden (if largely obscured behind a rusted, prison-like fence).

I have always preferred old houses. I find they come with built-in character simply by virtue of their having been around and enjoyed for a while. Frankly, I feel the same way about furnishings and decorative objects, although I think they have more panache when they are combined with things that are new. Nothing is less imaginative to me than an interior that is all Victorian or entirely contemporary. The personal statement, the humour, the schvung, if you will, is all in the artful interplay of old and new — or cool and warm, shiny and matte, primitive and sophisticated…. You get the picture. A key word in my style book is “juxtaposition.”

Which is why, after several years of squatting in our

The addition, designed by John Tong from 3rd Uncle Design, is an industrial contemporary box of aluminum and rusting Cor-Ten steel.

Similarly, inside, we chose to highlight the point at which the house breaks with the old and transforms into something very new with a panel door on industrial sliders made from a pair of painted screens that I stumbled across at a vintage shop in Toronto. Signed and dated 1957, they turned out to be the handiwork of Douglas Coburn, who was a set decorator back in the day for the St. Regis Room at the old Simpsons store. Reimagining the possibilities, in my view, is truly stylish: now the screens make a bold, graphic gesture, but when I found them, they were hiding the unsightly bits at the back of a dusty store.

OWNER JOHANNE D’ASTOUS CREATED A DRAMATIC,

NEOCLASSICAL FAMILY HOME.Text by CRAILLE MAGUIRE GILLIES | Photography by JEAN LONGPRÉ

You don’t need to flip through her passport or check her Facebook status to know where Johanne D’Astous has travelled. You need only look around her home, a century-old stone maison à étages in Montreal’s tony Outremont neighbourhood. There, you’ll find a kind of living travelogue: a Louis XVI chest of drawers found in France; an antique Buddha she came across in China; a statue from a church in Portugal.

Johanne’s travels are not merely recreational. Three or four times a year, she makes buying trips to France, Italy and beyond for Verte Campagne Décoration, her upscale Montreal boutique. “When I shop in Paris or Milan or New York, I’m trying to find pieces that will show Montrealers what is out there,” she says. For her own home, she’s been known to ship back some pretty substantial souvenirs, including a velvet Victorian settee from France — no keychains of the Eiffel Tower for her. (Knowing the ins and outs of intercontinental shipping is both a perk and peril of the job.) “Travelling is where I get ideas. And I don’t want to store things in a box,” says Johanne. “They only mean something if you display

them.” Such treasures reveal not only a love for other cultures, but also a design sensibility that is bold yet subtle, urbane yet serene — and completely modern.

Johanne and her husband, Paul Sara, who’s in the restaurant business, bought the 7,500-square-foot French neoclassical-style home a decade ago. Before them, three generations of the same family had lived in the house’s separate, sprawling apartments, each with its own entrance, kitchen and bathroom. Built in 1903, it even had the original elevator with European-style wrought-iron accordion doors. “The grandmother lived on the main floor; her one son lived on the second floor; and her other son lived on the third floor,” Johanne recalls.

But Paul had reservations. “He didn’t like the house at all. It was dark and dusty, and he thought it was ugly,” she says. “But I was inspired by that touch of black on the banister, the wrought-iron doors, the beautiful stained-glass panels — it all gave me the pulse of the house,” she says. “So I convinced Paul it would be great.”

It was abundantly clear though that it would be a good home for their large blended family. The couple have taken over the first and second floors for themselves and their 13-year-old daughter, Emmanuelle. Their other children, now grown, are only an elevator ride away: one of Paul’s sons lives downstairs with his girlfriend and two dogs, while Johanne’s son lives in the third-floor apartment. I always wondered how my friend Kimberley Newport-Mimran did it. I knew how busy she was running Pink Tartan, her fast-growing fashion label, keeping up with daughter, Jacqueline, and husband, Joe Mimran, of Joe Fresh fame, all of which includes travel, lots of family time, and running their gorgeous home (H&H, Sept. 2008) while always looking fit and fabulous. One friend summed it up well: “Kim always looks better than her models.” It’s true.

So, when Joe announced over a quiet dinner last fall at Trattoria Giancarlo with Michel and me that Kim was also a “great cook,” I was naturally curious. Joe went on to describe Kim in the kitchen, food flying, cooking up her amazing dishes. “It’s her secret weapon,” he said. “You should taste her tomato salad,” he went on to say.

I believed him and tried to imagine this supercool lady making a mess in their pristine kitchen, and decided it was something that we all just had to see.

IN FULL SWING

On warm summer evenings, guests

naturally gravitate to the limestone terrace

overlooking the pool.

Not only did Kim agree to let us into her kitchen and share some favourite entertaining recipes, she decided to invite friends for supper and let the H&H team in to document every step of the fun. It was a day and evening we’ll never forget. The menu was to be fresh and simple, including an eclectic charcuterie board, pasta with simmered zucchini, and her famous chicken paillards.

My favourite part was the transformation of Kim from dowel-wielding, barefoot and totally focused on pounding her chicken breasts into thin, silken submission, to the gorgeous hostess who appeared at the top of the stairs in a black cocktail dress on the arm of her dapper husband, as a delighted Jacqueline looked on.

Earlier, Kim shared some of her best food tips, and Jacqueline shared some insights into eating in the Mimran house. Kim and Joe like to eat the European way — using straightforward, simple foods and the best olive oils, vinegars and mustards. Sometimes, Joe arrives home with the latest President’s Choice products for Kim and Jacqueline to test.

The great thing about new Kraft Dinner Smart macaroni and cheese isn’t that it’s made with

a blend of cauliflower and wheat.

Nor the fact that it has ½ a serving of veggies in every helping*.

Nope. The great thing about new KD Smart? It has the same great taste as original KD.

So your kids won’t even know they’re eating vegetables.

KDSmart.ca* Every helping of KD Smart is 50 grams, ¾ cup prepared and has ½ a serving of vegetables (caulifl ower).

Fresh Raspberry Sorbet

The crimson colour

of this fresh

raspberry sorbet is

a showstopper —

and then comes the

taste, which takes

full advantage of

the season’s

best produce.

Kimberley serves dessert buffet-

style on a century-old pearl inlay

table — a treasure from the couple’s

trip to Marrakesh.

Kim told me about Whole Foods’ Farmers’ Basket — a weekly assortment of fresh-picked (within 48 hours) fruits and vegetables that she looks forward to buying. Other favourite staples are spelt bread, Oven Head smoked salmon from New Brunswick that she buys at TO GO in Toronto, and Ontario tomatoes for the Moroccan tomato salad like Joe’s mother made. I asked if Joe liked to cook, and Jacqueline giggled. Apparently, when Kim is travelling, and it’s the cook’s night off, Joe whips up wonderful omelettes for Jacqueline. She told me he makes them for breakfast, lunch and dinner — “Only different.”

Like me, Kim was raised in Niagara Falls, so we compared notes on our childhood memories of food. There was a vibrant Italian community in our small town, and it seems we each had at least one friend whose big Italian family was always cooking up something delicious and sharing their secrets to a great tomato sauce.

It’s official, you can add another thing to her resumé. Yes, she cooks, too.

Chicken Paillards with Herbed Butter and Crispy ShallotsSERVES 6

Chicken Paillards 6 medium boneless, skinless chicken breasts ⅓ cup olive oil 2 cloves garlic, crushed Zest and juice of 1 lemon Salt and pepper 2 lemons cut into ½"-thick slices

Herbed Butter ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature 2 tsp each chopped fresh basil and thyme ¼ tsp salt

Crispy Shallots 1 cup canola or vegetable oil 3 shallots, thinly sliced

1. Place chicken breasts in a resealable bag

(or between sheets of waxed paper one at a

time). Using a mallet or the smooth side of

a meat tenderizer, pound from the centre

outwards until breast is ¼" thick.

2. Place all pounded chicken breasts into

a clean resealable bag or a shallow pan.

Combine with oil, garlic, lemon zest and

juice, and salt and pepper. Marinate for

30 minutes in the fridge.

3. To make herbed butter, mix the butter,

herbs and salt together well. Set aside.

4. To make the crispy shallots, heat oil in a

large sauté pan on medium heat until the oil

shimmers. Add shallots and cook, stirring

until golden, about 6 to 8 minutes. Using a

slotted spoon, transfer to a paper towel.

Fresh Raspberry SorbetMAKES APPROX. 6 ½-CUP SERVINGS

3 170-g containers of fresh raspberries (just over 1 lb.) ¾ cup water ⅔ cup granulated sugar ½ tsp vanilla

1. Place raspberries in food processor and

purée. Strain mixture through a fine mesh

sieve. Discard seeds; set purée aside.

2. Meanwhile, place water and sugar in a

small saucepan and simmer for a couple of

minutes to dissolve. Add sugar syrup and

vanilla to purée and let cool in the fridge.

3. Place mixture in the bowl of an ice-cream

maker and use according to maker’s

instructions, then transfer to a freezer-safe

bowl and freeze until firm. Alternatively,

place sorbet mixture in chilled baking pan for

several hours, stirring every half hour for the

first two hours. Serve with a chunk of dark

chocolate for guests to break off.

5. Preheat grill to medium-high heat and

spray with cooking spray. Cook chicken 2 to

3 minutes on one side, then flip, and add a

dollop of herbed butter on each paillard. Lay

lemon slices on grill. Cook chicken a further

2 to 3 minutes, until firm to the touch and

butter is melted. Remove chicken and

lemons from grill. Top paillards with crispy

shallots and serve with grilled lemon slices

and seasonal vegetables, such as heirloom

tomatoes with Maldon salt, blanched green

beans tossed with remaining herbed butter,

or grilled radicchio. To grill radicchio: slice

radicchio through the core in several slices,

keeping core intact. Soak in cold water for

half an hour, then dry well and brush with

olive oil. Grill evenly on both sides on

barbecue over medium-high heat until

tender. Season with salt and pepper and

drizzle with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

its provenance, as well as combinations some might consider “eclectic” (although I loathe the laziness of the word). In my dining room are metal Goodform office chairs around the Deco table, a David Hicks honeycomb carpet, a disco-era Sciolari chandelier of brass and glass I found on eBay, an anatomical drawing my husband, Thomas, found in Copenhagen, a vintage Chinese restaurant sign and an oversized harmonica. (When I victoriously presented this unusual find, which once hung outside a music shop, to my sister-in-law at the Brimfield antique show in Massachusetts, she took one look at it and quipped: “Clearly there is something for everyone here.”)

As my sister-in-law astutely observed, I am not averse to conceptual “themes” and I happen to like visual puns. Since our house enjoys a park-like setting, it

often feels like we’re living in a treehouse, an effect I enjoyed maximizing with a graphic forest wallpaper in the hall and up the stairs. Adding vintage prints of birds, and nest and egg paraphernalia amuses me.

I love the elephant-grey and bold turquoise of my living room, and the way it’s like an essay on how cool (blues, greys, silver, glass) works with warm (browns, wood, leather, brass). Thomas and I fell so hard for the lyrical Portuguese carpet from the 1930s, imagining it to have once graced the entrance of some grand penthouse suite, that we got completely carried away at an auction and paid way more for it than we’d planned. But the defining piece in the room is our magnificent Douglas Walker — a painting on folded, tattered paper of an imagined landscape, which is simultaneously art and artifact.

The new open kitchen-family room is, of course, a source of delight, particularly when we entertain family and friends, which is often. It, too, is finished in a symphony of materials — pebbled glass with boat-like teak,

lab-like soapstone, and a cool vanilla laminate. The bright red punctuation of the sofa under the cobalt painting (another Douglas Walker) finally came together once I tossed in a rough ethnic weaving I found on a recent trip to Argentina and some French gingham pillows.

Because that’s the thing about style: people say, well, anything goes. If you like it, it will all go together somehow. But they aren’t being entirely honest. Each finish, every fabric, each piece you bring into a room contributes its own set of associations, its own unique energy. To make it all work, you have to have some feel for the mix and the balance. And the way to get there, in my experience, is to remain open to new possibilities and discoveries and to approach combinations sensually.

What I really love about my house is that it’s fun and not too precious. It dares to be a little bit different and refuses to take itself too seriously. Which, in the end, is probably the best description I can offer when it comes to my own, evolving style.

Just like that

gutted the space and turned it into a de facto design lab to showcase their playful, mid-century-modern-inspired style. The pair love to entertain, so opening up the main floor was paramount. Improving the home’s energy-efficiency was also a high priority, so a new roof, sustainable bamboo flooring and low-E, argon-insulated windows were added.

Architecturally understated rooms and a neutral white, grey and cream backdrop showcase the bold design hits: a lively pink sofa here, some big metallic floral wallpaper there, and those showstopping vintage light fixtures everywhere. “Nothing is precious, and nothing is a gazillion dollars,” says Arren. In fact, refurbished vintage pieces throughout (the couple spend hours scouring thrift shops) enhance the house’s modernized 1960s and ’70s vibe. And whether it’s a cheeky art wall or a room painted entirely in dark grey, there’s one modus operandi underlying the way they achieve the house’s hip look — light, both literal and figurative. “It really is about the fun,” says Arren.

proceeded with the reno, undertaking the first phase, which involved removing the old addition, restoring the original cabin and turning it into the kitchen, and building the new addition to house the living, dining and sitting rooms and bedrooms, in 2001. (In 2007, Colette and Leo added a private principal suite over the new addition.) When Colette and her family were at home in London — daughters Hannah and Ava are 11 and 8 — her father, Ted Anthon, and contractor Greg Hurrle, an old family friend, continued the renovations.

When the time came to furnish, she took a similarly whimsical approach. She wrote off things like saggy old sofas and introduced new acquisitions to the hand-me-downs that made the cut, and she let

accidents happen, using experience from abroad: “I think living in England for 10 years has taught me to be slightly more irreverent, a little less contrived, and to consciously take risks or accidentally throw things together — it becomes second nature.”

The results never fail to impress even those who know her best. Her boss and mentor, Haslam, who knows a thing or two about creating memorable spaces, plainly agrees. “It’s ravishing,” he says of the cottage. “Its brilliant scale and the quirkiness … it looks completely enchanting. It’s sort of got an honest, dreamlike quality.”

That honesty — what Colette calls “that scrapbook feeling” — was what she was after. “We went to a lot of expense and effort to make things look unplanned and old,” she says.

She also looked to books like The Heritage of Upper Canadian Furniture by Howard Pain, to help inform her design choices. “This is how I approach the interiors I work on professionally, really,” she says. “Rather than looking at what’s ‘on trend’ or what other designers are doing, I go to the library shelves.” She also spent time in the local Minden Hills Museum. “They’ve erected seven old farmstead homes, and you see how even with basic tools and wood there were attempts to make interiors at least a little bit grand — maybe with pretty trim around the doorways.”

Colette later revisited that idea of pretty trim after attending a weekend wedding being held at an old Austrian estate that had baroque reliefs around the interior doors and windows. Initially, Hurrle had done simple, classic Canadian 45-degree-square cutouts around the doors. “But I thought, ‘You know, I like to think that if the early Canadian immigrants had had enough time, they would have taken it a step further.’ So I changed them.” The simple, stylized reliefs define interiors throughout the house and add a layer of detailing that sets the cottage apart.

“It was a lot of work,” she says — especially for her father, who painstakingly cut the wood with a jigsaw while shaking his head at the outlandish idea. “But taking things one step further, for me, pays off.”

GLOBAL GLAMOURCONTINUED FROM PAGE 87

grandchildren come for holidays, the total is 18 with just immediate family.)

Though many original features — ornate mouldings and Corinthian-style columns in the dining room, for example — were selling points, a few structural updates were in order. Wiring and plumbing were modernized, and the stone façade was repaired in a yearlong process. Inside, they combined the first- and second-floor apartments to create a two-storey, 5,000-square-foot living space. Downstairs, they merged a small servant’s kitchen with the main kitchen to form a versatile oblong space. “Sometimes our sons come to our place to get food from the fridge and then go back to their own apartments,” Johanne says, laughing.

On the second floor, a small kitchen and bathroom became the spacious principal ensuite. Out went the bathroom’s circa-1950 pink and black tiles and in came full-height silk drapes, the kind you’d find in a plush living room.

Using such subtle, but luxurious, materials in unusual ways is part of Johanne’s signature style. “I take time to ‘place’ the way I feel,” she says and describes her design aesthetic as “classic with a mix of contemporary.” That’s a modest appraisal. Like a couturier whose work never shows the seams, Johanne expertly blends styles and materials.

For 20 years working as a designer and retailer, Johanne has honed a talent for creating dramatic vignettes of both übercontemporary pieces and formal antiques. And this same mélange of old and new can be seen on a stroll through her neighbourhood, past synagogues with the sounds of prayer wafting out the windows and then, in the next blocks, popular cafés such as Toi, Moi et Café, which is filled every morning for brunch.

But travel, and the quest for new objects, ideas and memories always beckon. The couple is planning a trip to Israel and Egypt with Emmanuelle, stopping in Damascus to visit Paul’s family. By now, they know to bring along big suitcases.

Chantal, 38, mother of three “ After my daughter was born, I was surprised that little leaks that I’d experienced during pregnancy were still happening.”

“ After my fi rst pregnancy, I noticed things such as laughing, coughing and sneezing could cause little leaks. So I started practicing Kegel exercises and using special pantiliners designed to neutralize odour, now I can carry on with my busy day!”

Ann, 45“At fi rst, I hardly noticed the leaks. But I lead an active lifestyle, so in time I had to fi nd a solution for those small but unpleasant surprises.”

“ I can’t pinpoint exactly when it started, but one day I realized that little leaks were happening more frequently. Everyday things like standing up quickly, laughing and exercise could be the trigger. Fortunately, Always Dri-Liners Plus + helps keep me dry and neutralizes odour. Now I feel great everyday!”

Madeleine, 31, pregnant with her fi rst child“ Being pregnant has been such a magical time for me, in so many ways. And while I expected to have heartburn, cravings and fatigue, no one warned me about the other changes my body would go through!”

“ I checked out alwaysmomsclub.com and was relieved to learn that light leaks are a common problem when you’re expecting. They can happen at any time during pregnancy, for any number of reasons. I’ve started using pantiliners that absorb the wetness and neutralize the odour, so now I don’t have to stop in my tracks every time the baby kicks!”

As many as 1 in 4 women are affected by it.

Discover new Always Dri-Liners Plus+ with Odour-Lock.™ Great protection that continuously absorbs and neutralizes odour for everyday freshness.

How can we get the same light, airy classic look of our kitchen

in our dining room?— K.M., Burlington, Ont.

PAINT THE WOODYou might be hesitant to paint the wood trim, but you won’t get

the strong connection between the rooms if you don’t. Besides, your antique furniture is beautiful, so you’re better off highlighting it rather than the millwork. Use the same white as in your kitchen on the window trim, floor and baseboards for a look similar to that in the inspiration room; but keep your french doors (not shown) dark to draw attention to that architectural feature.

BUILD A SOFT PALETTEPaint the dining room walls in the same soft shade as your kitchen. Next, find a fabric that complements this colour, and have drapery panels made for the windows. Cambria in Powder from Robert Allen (shown) has a lovely blue-green stylized floral pattern that will bring some interest to the room and soften the window wall. Update your chairs by re-covering their seats in a solid linen. Robert Allen’s Endless in Bermuda (shown) picks up on the colours in the new drapes, or

Bringing It All TogetherCreating harmony between a new kitchen and old dining room.

Cameron MacNeil answers your decorating questions.

The inspiration

Endless in Natural (shown) is a neutral that will work well with the wood tone of the chairs. Bring in a pair of John Derian Leaf chairs by Cisco Brothers (shown) for extra seating. The turned front legs will work nicely with your existing chairs.

FINISH WITH ACCESSORIESThe botanical-style Green Fern serigraph series by Longstreet Collection at South Hill Home (shown) will add a traditional element, and the dark blue and green will punch up the new palette. Lastly, a collection of chunky Avery hurricane lanterns from Pottery Barn (shown) will make an ideal centerpiece.

In the 1950s, when a polished sense of glamour was all the rage, elegance was an everyday affair. At least, that’s the fantasy photographers like Irving Penn and Richard Avedon rendered so convincingly in black and white, a perfectly poised vision that’s once again inspiring la dolce vita as epitomized by Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly — who’s currently being lauded with an exhibit of her gowns at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

For style pointers, recline against a prim floral-print pillow and watch Hepburn’s Funny Face or Kelly’s To Catch a Thief. Step into the spotlight with Restoration Hardware’s floor lamp and pick up a set of vintage-inspired SteamLine luggage. (It will look equally smart stacked as extra storage.) Maintain a sense of mystery behind a pair of Oliver Goldsmith sunglasses, then snap onlookers with a chic camera as you roar away in a sleek black car, leaving them wondering: Who was that?
