Finding qualified employees is a challenge facing many organizations today. What do you do when you have more jobs than people to fill them? How do you continue to operate and grow your business? These challenges are not going away anytime soon and for businesses to be successful now and in the future, new employment strategies will need to be adopted. By 2011 immigration will be the sole source of labour force growth within Canada and yet the majority of professional immigrants residing in Alberta today are not working at their potential. Join BOWEN to learn how you can effectively tap into this overlooked talent pool and why it makes good business sense for your workforce planning strategy.
Free for registered visitors and exhibitors of the Global Petroleum Show and Career Exposition. Please attend the breakfast reception and valuable presentation hosted by BOWEN Workforce Solution. Register today to attend.

Addressing workforce challenges to meet the world’s energy needs
ConocoPhillips Canada (CPC) is one of the country’s largest oil and natural gas production and exploration companies. Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, we are a top three producer of natural gas in the country and operate a world-class portfolio including assets in western Canada, the Arctic and Atlantic Canada, as well as oil sands interests near Fort McMurray, Alberta. Our parent company, ConocoPhillips, is an international, integrated energy company operating in more than 40 countries.
The key to our company’s success is our people, and we work hard to attract and retain the best talent available. We provide employees with meaningful and challenging work, to position them and the company for future success. Similar to other organizations in most industries across the country, CPC faces workforce challenges in today’s competitive market. These include:
Navigating the Canadian labour market: To meet Canada and the world’s energy needs, we need to continue expanding our workforce. Yet we often face a shortage of skilled workers. With so many other companies facing this same challenge, the market becomes even more competitive we have responded with an expanded and innovative recruiting program.
Preparing for a changing workforce: The Canadian and global workforces are feeling the strains of the baby boom generation phasing out of the workforce through retirement. Now more than ever, workforce planning is essential and must accommodate both those nearing the end of their careers and those just beginning. Organizations must plan now to ensure there are enough people to fill future positions, and that experienced workers transfer knowledge through coaching and mentoring new staff.
Staffing oil sands initiatives: CPC has substantial oil sands interests near Fort McMurray, and staffing this workforce is critical to our future success. While the future of these assets is exciting, factors such as limited housing and
infrastructure and a high cost of living pose chal-lenges. Companies must be highly innovative if they want to bring on and keep top talent in this demanding business and geographic area.
CPC uses a variety of programs and initiatives to attract and retain the right people:
Offering exciting career development opportunities in Canada and globally: That’s just one of the many benefits that are possible when you’re part of a large, international company.
Continually working to ensure that our compensation packages are competitive: Our goal is to ensure our benefits, exciting work atmosphere and approach to appropriate work-life balance meet the needs of our talented workforce.
Encouraging our employees to help us attract other talented people through an employee referral program: Employees who refer an individual who is successfully hired may be eligible for a monetary reward. This lets us reward employees who refer others to CPC and promotes a unified and high performance team.
Integrating our SPIRIT values – Safety, People, Integrity, Responsibility, Innovation and Teamwork – and they guide us in everything we do.
Working to ensure our team consists of the right people positions us to overcome workforce challenges, to successfully meet the world’s energy needs.

MAXIMIzE yOUR CAREER POTENTIAL

BE a TOP 20% PERFORmERIn today’s tight labour market where companies are struggling to fill their job openings, employers know that the top 20% of their workforce are more vital than ever, because it’s these star employees who have the most impact on the growth and sustainability of an organization.
The best employers ensure that the top 20% get earmarked early for advancement, that they get the highest starting salaries and pay increases, are the recipients of additional incentives such as stock options and receive the most investment in training and development. That is why to build a lucrative career and maximize your earnings potential you need to be in the top 20% employee group in whatever role, area or occupation you are in.
At Design Group Staffing Inc. we spend our days identifying the top 20% of candidates that we know top employers will want to meet with. Over the course of a year we interview hundreds of potential job candidates from intermediate to executive level and there are a number of qualities the top 20% consistently demonstrate. Here’s some career building advice based on the five key qualities we see in star employees.
1) Enjoy what you do. Choose roles that you are both competent at and that you enjoy. Top performers typically have excellent technical skills, but they also enjoy what they do and it shows in the level of engagement in their work and therefore in their attitude, it clearly shines through during an interview. If you don’t enjoy what you do then perhaps it’s time to re-think your career path.
2) Take 100% personal accountability for all opportunities and failures in your scope of work. Top performers are fixers not finger pointers and this comes through in references from their managers and in feedback from their peers.
3) Focus on outcomes, not effort. The top 20% have a reputation for “getting things done” and they are interested in results, not in how much time they put in or how much they are owed for their time.
4) Listen twice as much as you speak. When interviewing candidates one of the obvious indicators that we might be talking to a top performer is the extent to which they ask questions and listen intently. It’s rare to meet a star employee who does not possess great listening skills, which includes the art of asking good questions. There is an old saying: “I never learned anything when I was the one doing all the talking” – top performers know this lesson and practice it every day.
5) Build networks: today’s business world is all about team work; no one person has all the answers. Top performers are skilled at systematically building networks of people inside and outside of their organizations who can help them solve problems or can provide insight and information. These personal networks provide “hidden value” to a top performer’s organization.
We live in fortunate times in Alberta and as such we can all enjoy the benefits a good economy brings. Being in the top 20% of sought after employees will ensure that you enjoy every opportunity the job market has to offer.

ALBERTA STRONG AND FREE
10
Working in Alberta isn’t just about earning
a living – it’s about living a good life. This
dynamic and debt-free province in western
Canada boasts a rapidly expanding and
vibrant economy whose exceptionally healthy
job market offers a wealth of opportunities
in a wide range of sectors: health care,
engineering, manufacturing, business services,
education, energy, agri-food, hospitality,
trades and forestry, to name but a few.
Quite simply, Alberta is built for business, with
excellent infrastructure, a great transportation
system, legendary entrepreneurial spirit and
two major urban centres, Edmonton and
Calgary. The cost of doing business in Alberta
is among the most competitive in North
America. With just 10 per cent of Canada’s
population, Alberta created almost a quarter
of all the new jobs in the country in 2007,
and its unemployment rate last year was the
lowest in Canada at 3.5 per cent.
Of course, statistics only tell part of the
story. There’s a lot more to Alberta beyond
employment opportunities. Alberta boasts
a world-class education system, excellent
publicly-funded health care, no provincial
sales tax, plenty of sports and recreation
opportunities, and a cosmopolitan arts and
culture scene. Then, of course, there’s the
scenery — majestic mountains, pristine lakes
and sweeping prairie vistas — not to mention
the locals’ famous hospitality.
There are plenty of opportunities awaiting
skilled newcomers to the province. If you are
considering living and working permanently
in Alberta, the Provincial Nominee Program
(PNP) can help fast-track you through the
Canadian immigration process.
The Alberta PNP is an employer-driven
immigration program, operated on behalf of
the Government of Alberta by the Ministry of
Employment and Immigration in conjunction
with Citizenship and Immigration Canada
(CIC), to expedite the processing of an
application for permanent residence.
The Alberta PNP is designed to meet the
needs of Alberta employers who are unable
to fill skilled and select semi-skilled positions
with Canadian citizens or permanent residents
of Canada. Individuals nominated by the
Province of Alberta, together with their spouse
and dependent children, are eligible to apply
for a permanent resident visa through CIC
as a Provincial Nominee. CIC grants priority
to processing permanent resident visa
applications for Provincial Nominees. CIC
makes the final decision on the permanent
resident visa application.
For more information on Alberta and the
Provincial Nominee Program, visit
www.albertacanada.com/immigration.
