the race tO Be the neXt LOs anGeLes mayOr BeGinsWith the election nearing its end in May and a non-partisan primary election set for March 5, the race to be the next mayor is heating up. According to recent polls, Los Angeles City Controller and former City Council Member Wendy Greuel and Councilman Eric Garcetti are in the lead. Greuel appears to be causing the most waves with the first of the bunch to air ads on TV. Greuel also received the city’s fire and police departments’ support, two huge endorsements. However, it wouldn’t be wise to count Garcetti out just yet. The half-Jewish, half-Mexican councilman not only appeals to two huge Los Angeles demographics, but he has the support of United Teachers Los Angeles and the Sierra Club. Other top contenders include Jan Perry, the only African-American in the race; Emanuel Pleitez, a former assistant to Villaraigosa and former Goldman Sachs employee; and Kevin James, former radio talk show host and entertainment lawyer who is also the sole republican and happens to be gay. To say this is an interesting race is an understatement.

OBama urGes FOr actiOn aGainst Gun ViOLenceThere have been at least four school shootings in 2012 alone. With the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting being the latest, President Obama has proposed for new gun control measures to be taken. The President has urged that action must be taken and is attempting to approach Congress through the people. He is making speeches and visiting with the people in hopes of the voters changing Congress’ mind. His measures include a call for background checks, a ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines and a reinstatement of

the assault weapons ban. The measures have much opposition, but Obama is hoping to succeed by winning public opinion.

BOy scOuts eXecutiVe BOard tO POstPOne decisiOn cOncerninG Gay memBershiP The Boy Scouts of America recently announced that it will not yet give a definitive verdict on allowing gay individuals to join the organization. In 2000, the United States Supreme Court sanctioned the prohibition, stating that as a private organization the BSA was entitled to legal free speech. However, since the ban was instated in 1993, the BSA has seen a divide between conservative and liberal groups within the organization, forcing them to take action. Over the past couple of weeks, the organization met to discuss lifting the ban or possibly handing the task of discerning gay membership to individual troops. The BSA has decided to postpone their decision until the organization’s annual meeting in May, citing that it needed more time to further discuss the implications of lifting the ban. This conclusion has outraged many Scouts, leaders and volunteers who argue that the decision’s postponement will only further silence those members and force them to stay in the closet or risk losing their positions within the program.

numBer OF datinG aPPs increases amOnG cOLLeGe-aGe indiViduaLsThe popularity of dating applications for Smartphone users has soared over the past year or so, contributing to a new phenomenon of younger online daters. New dating sites popping up have begun to target a younger demographic, prompting

the creation of similar applications for iPhones and Androids. For example, OkCupid’s apps such as OkCupid Locals and the new Crazy Blind Date have made finding young singles in your area simple and effortless. Along with the popularity of dating apps, there has been controversy over hook-up applications such as Bang With Friends, an app that alerts you when one of your Facebook friends is interested in meeting up, and Grindr, the infamous gay male hook-up application that boasts three million users in 192 countries. This kind of new romantic technology has reduced the stigma of online dating enormously, especially for the 20-something and 30-something populations.

endinG FederaL mariJuanna PrOhiBitiOn act intrOduced in cOnGressWith Colorado and Washington as the first states to legalize the recreational use of marijuana back in November, other states may see similar reform as Congress begins to reevaluate marijuana legalization. Democratic representatives Jared Polis (Colorado) and Earl Blumenauer (Oregon) introduced the new marijuana reform that would decriminalize the drug and impose regulations that are similar to that of alcohol in the U.S. The two representatives cited failing drug war policies and a deteriorating national economy as rationale for the reform laws. In addition, the proposed Blumenauer Bill would tax cannabis retailers $500-$1,000 annually, helping to lower the deficit. These attempts will be the first of many marijuana legalization attempts that will be pushed through Congress, but with national public opinion siding with cannabis reform, these bills will be gaining support from both parties in time.

When sOmeOne discOVers a PassiOn FOr music, it’s always different. Artists, particularly music singers, experience it in a variety of forms. For Jarvis, however, discovering his passion for music came at an early age.

“I was watching Michael Jackson (on television),” said Jarvis during a telephone interview from Atlanta. “He was doing a show, and he did his spin, stood on his toes and grabbed his crotch and made the ‘whoo’ sound. From that day forward, I knew that’s what I wanted to do.”

Jarvis, a rising R&B star who signed with Capital Records in December 2012, added that he grew up singing at church in his native Tulsa, Okla. He wasn’t sure if he’d like to follow a career as a vocalist or musician, but that was until the moment involving Michael Jackson, one of Jarvis’ most prominent musical influences over the years.

He grew up listening to gospel music, but also other sounds, including James Brown, Prince, Bobby Brown and Usher.

The 23-year-old, who was born Jarvis Shaffer, now resides in Atlanta – having relocated since the age of 14. Oklahoma and Georgia are different, according to Jarvis.

“They are a lot different,” he said. “Where I’m from, it’s a small country town: some people own horses and are cowboys. There just aren’t many outlets. There’s not much going on. That’s the main difference between Tulsa and Atlanta. When I came here, there was just so much happening. Everyone’s always moving, so much going on, so much to be seen and heard (and) so much to take in. I’ve never left since.”

There, he signed with Grammy Award-winning producer Jermaine Dupri’s So So Def Recordings. After presenting the singles “Radio” and “Pretty Girl” featuring Lucadris, Jarvis

released a mix-tape titled Heartache in September 2012.Heartache featured collaborations from DJ Khaled, Waka

Flocka Flame and Lil Scrappy. Jarvis mentioned that the project tackled his relationship with music and other things.

“It originated form my life as a whole,” he said. “It wasn’t just about a relationship heartache with a woman; it was about my relationship with music, my love, my passion – what I put everything into. It addresses shortcomings, and how when you put so much into something, it shouldn’t treat you that way. I basically use music as a metaphor for love.”

Jarvis, who in his free time loves watching movies and playing sports even though both are rare, said that’s where the name Heartache came.

For Jarvis, other spare time activities include spending time with his family and friends. He also likes to hit the music studio and be creative. Basically, his professional practices and hobbies revolve around music.

“That’s just a part of me,” he said. And that’s the way it’s been since, well, forever – particularly because his older sister inspired him since youth.

“My sister was always a big mouth, big talker, a big everything,” said Jarvis with a laugh. “Her being so vocal about everything she wanted to do inspired me to take the next step, outside of singing in church. To this day, I would thank her for my way of singing. She would always come home from choir class and teach me things she learned: new harmonies, control – I would be her guinea pig in a way. I learned so much through that, and that’s how she’s been an inspiration.”

An inspiration that’s led him to formulate his upcoming debut album, Cardiology, which is slated to hit the music waves

later this year. Cardiology carries the first single “Make A Little Room” and is now available on iTunes.

“It’s about a love triangle and having a female wanting to step out and make different choices, which is fine. But in a situation like that, you leave the other individual in the relationship isolated,” confessed Jarvis as he talked about the significance of the lyrics. “So in the song, I wanted to ‘Make A Little Room’ for another person while she figured out whether she wanted to be with me or not.”

For Jarvis, it’s always been about portraying life experiences in his songs. He acknowledged with no hesitation that he personally brings passion and emotion into his music.

Despite his past, current and ongoing success, Jarvis manages to remain humble. After experiencing life the way he has, he says he’s here to musically please fans.

“Now that I have (experienced life), I try to definitely put all of me in every single record that I do,” he said. “It gives the fans a better chance to relate. Also, it gives me a better chance to connect with my fans, just have a realistic approach all around. When I perform it, you’re going to feel it. When I sing it, you’re going to feel it. You can hear it in the vocals that it is something I’ve dealt with in my life.”

Being true to himself is an unique achievement, especially because he let’s that transcend through his music. Jarvis believes that’s what will make him legendary.

Nowadays, though, his hard work is paying off as he lives his dream.

“I think dreams do come true, but also hard work does pay off,” said Jarvis. “I think dreams come true as a result of hard work. You can’t do one without the other.”

mastOn LurkinG in the shadOWsMulti-instrumentalist Maston (full name: Frank Maston) spent his youth in suburban Los Angeles soaking up sounds created by the likes of Phil Spector, Harry Nilsson and SoCal’s Brian Wilson. Now, he’s released a set of his own tunes influenced by the output of those pop geniuses. This week Maston released Shadows, a full-length album full of haunting melodies and eerie, psychedelic guitar lines that are augmented with keyboards, brass and woodwinds. They’re performed in a style that’ll thrill fans of acts like Animal Collective. Shadows has also been pressed on vinyl in random colors, and you can buy a copy when you see Maston live at Pehrspace on March 9.

sunset striP Guitar scuLPtures tO Be auctiOnedIf you’ve been on the Sunset Strip in the past year there’s no way you could have missed them – the 10-foot-tall sculptures shaped like Gibson guitars that are part of the Gibson GuitarTown Project. The project is now coming to an end, as the artworks will be auctioned off Feb. 21 and 22 with all proceeds going to benefit the Los Angeles Fund for Public Education’s “Arts Matter” campaign. Included in the auction are the “Electric Warrior” guitar decorated by Shepard Fairey, “Black Eyed Peas” designed by Tsipi Mani, “Cosmic Essence” created by John Kosh and signed by Donovan and more. The public is invited to view all 18 guitars both days from noon to 5 p.m. at Bonhams.

VariOus crueLtiesThe Rodney on the Roq and Jonesy’s Jukebox radio shows are not the only venues giving lots of exposure to British band Various Cruelties; the trio also scored big by having their song “If it Wasn’t for You” placed in the Zales ads that ran on TV all through the holidays and through this week. Fans hungry for more can enjoy a couple of big helpings of Various Cruelties when the band plays the Bootleg Bar on Feb. 21.

cradLe OF FiLth Guitarist GiVinG LessOnsPaul Allender, guitarist for heavy metal act Cradle of Filth, is hiring himself out as a guitar instructor. “After being a professional player for almost 20 years, I decided I wanted to start teaching guitar to fans who wanted to learn,” said Allender. “The best way I could think of was to teach over Skype. My lessons have also evolved past guitar; I teach songwriting and arranging and how to use Pro Tools as well as give advice for anyone who wants to get ahead in the industry.” Allender can be contacted at [email protected] Cradle of Filth plays the Hollywood House of Blues on March 6.

Skyfall, “Gossip Girl”: The Complete Series and Flight

Director Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious) doubles down on his casting against type with Matthew Fox as the torture-obsessed serial killer in Cross’ sights.

Author Stephen Chbosky helms the adaptation of his best-selling coming-of-age novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Funny, awkward and heartfelt, the film follows a shy high school freshman and the two seniors who make it their pet project to introduce him to the joys of teenage life. Funny Business: Rashida Jones co-wrote Celeste & Jesse Forever, a romantic comedy about two high school sweethearts and best friends (Jones and Andy Samberg) who are calling their marriage quits but want to remain friends. nichOLas sParks - novelist, screenwriter, legend – needs no introduction. Any film “based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks” is guaranteed to make you die laughing and crying at multiple parts throughout the screening. Message in a Bottle (1999), A Walk to Remember (2002), The Notebook (2004) – he’s no amateur when it comes to creating romantic dramas.

Number eight on Sparks’ list is Safe Haven, which is appropriately releasing on Valentine’s Day this year.

Julianne Hough stars as Katie, a woman who, for one reason or another, is looking to escape her past and start fresh in a new place. She stumbles into Southport, N.C., a quiet fishing town that is just a pit stop on the way to Atlanta. It is in this little, unassuming place that Katie gets a job as a waitress and rents a run-down cabin in the woods to start anew.

Alex (Josh Duhamel) owns the local mart and is raising his two children, Kristen (Mimi Kirkland) and Josh (Noah Lomax), after his wife tragically dies. Naturally, Katie is hesitant to get involved with Alex at first because she is still scarred by her mysteriously troublesome past that involves abuse, the police and a murder charge. However, like all good Sparks stories, Katie is able to let her guard down, and the two fall madly in love. The past isn’t completely dead, though, and Katie must face it one last time before she can claim her happily ever after.

For those readers who love Sparks, this is right up your alley. It isn’t the best Sparks adaptation, but it’s far from the worst (Dear John, anyone?). The Sparksian twist isn’t too hard to spot from several miles away, but it evokes plenty of waterworks nonetheless.

Sparks’ movies are known for those the quintessentially romantic moments. In Safe Haven, they take place in a boat, then in the rain, then in an old diner where they are left to talk, dance and be alone in blissful isolation. These are the scenes that we so desperately yearn for from Sparks.

Swedish-born director Lasse Hallstrom is no stranger to this genre. Known for his work with dramas (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen), he also has a varying past with romantic comedies. The other Sparks adaptation, to which I so rudely alluded earlier as being the worst in his repertoire, was also a Hallstrom film. However, he helmed Chocolat and The Cider House Rules, two masterfully and wonderfully romantic films.

With this experience under his belt, Hallstrom has a distinct eye for evoking the most out of his viewer in the height of the film’s dramatic scenes. In particular and without giving away the ending, he guides us seamlessly through the revelation of what specifically Katie is hiding from. I also dare you not to choke back tears by the ending scene. Touché, Hallstrom, touché.

However, a romantic “dramedy” cannot succeed without capable actors who must be able to channel the intended emotions, make us fall in love with them and stay clear of being too gimmicky. In this film, Hough and Duhamel are wonderful; there is a certain lightness to their performance that allows us to flit from scene to scene without getting wary of the inevitable clichés that plague every film of this genre. The fact that both are extremely attractive doesn’t hurt the bottom line of this review either.

Furthermore, Hough is a strong female lead as Katie. She isn’t quivering in fear, at least not constantly, and she isn’t dreaming of marriage like so many weaker leading ladies have done in the past.

Ric Reitz makes a menacing antagonist as police Chief Mulligan, and Cobie Smulders (“How I Met Your Mother”) is Jo, a friendly face and shoulder for Katie as she learns to adjust to life in the small town.

One of the film’s faults is that it starts a little rocky; Hallstrom may be a genius with drama, but the opening scene mimics a high-energy thriller that does not crosscut well with tranquil, scenic shots of the North Carolina countryside. However, the film picks up as the romance is laid on thick and heavy.

Overall in this film, the chemistry is not spared – the children mesh with Duhamel and give their own noteworthy performances as young, up-and-coming actors. There are far worse movies you could spend your money on, especially in the first two months of the year, which are notorious for being used as release dates for the movies studios want to throw in the trash.

It may not be Casablanca or even Chocolat, but Safe Haven is a nice little flick with heart to see this Valentine’s Day.

However, in the past five years it has produced the same winners, and there seems to be a huge groundswell of support for Ben Affleck since the Academy snubbed him of a Best Director nomination – a Best Picture win would give him an Oscar for producing.

All nine of the finalists have their supporting factions, but it looks like there are two that will give Argo a run for its money. Lincoln has two things going for it: 1) It’s directed by Steven Spielberg, and 2) It’s the “important” period piece that Academy voters love to reward.

Silver Linings Playbook is the other dark house. It’s an actors’ movie, becoming the first movie since Reds to receive nominations in all four acting categories. With actors making up the largest voting bloc in the Academy, SLP could spring the upset.

Rob Marshall won the DGA for Chicago, but Roman Polanski ended up with the Oscar for The Pianist in 2002. This year will be the seventh time: Affleck won the DGA for Argo and isn’t up for the Oscar.

No offense Zeitlin, but your nomination for your first feature will be your reward, and I wouldn’t be surprised if any of the other four walk away with the win. Russell and Spielberg could win, and Life of Pi is a technological achievement that many directors wouldn’t have been able to pull off. Haneke is a well-respected veteran, and Amour was one of 2012’s biggest art-house hits. Since I’m not allowed to pick a four-way tie, I’m going to go with Spielberg by a slim margin.

When yOu LOOk at charLie WeBer, you immediately think “hot.” No, not just hot – super hot. With his tousled brown hair, smoldering greenish/grayish/blueish eyes, washboard abs and manly-man persona that exudes sex appeal, it’s kind of hard to deny it. Add his “hotness” to his acting skills, and Hollywood better watch out; Weber is making his way into the hearts of the 16 to 32-year-old female demographic one shirtless scene at a time.

But although Weber is increasingly gaining fame by nabbing recurring roles as the extremely attractive, ruggedly handsome character on shows like MTV’s “Underemployed” and now the CW’s fifth season of “90210” as Mark (Weber will premiere on the show on Feb. 25), he’s not letting that fame get to him. When chatting with Weber, it was surprising to find out that the Beverly Hills/Hollywood glamorous lifestyle is not something that necessarily appeals to him, despite the fact that he portrays a 90210 inhabitant on the show.

“I’m not over in the real 90210 very often,” said Weber. “I live out by the beach; I have a low-key lifestyle.”

He continued, “My experience in Beverly Hills is pretty limited…but it looks fictional. You’re walking down the street, and there’s one car after another that costs hundreds of thousands of dollars…one store after another where a jacket will cost you $2,000 – it’s just a different world over there.”

Being the good-natured Midwestern boy that he is (he’s from Missouri), Weber has maintained a level head from the time he moved to New York at only 19 years old (“It was a culture shock!”) to his move to the beautiful La-La Land filled with fancy homes, fancy cars and even fancier people. It’s easy to get sucked into the stereotypical “L.A. way of life,” especially when you’re a celebrity, but Weber stays focused mainly because of one very important reason: his family.

“You know, it’s almost a struggle to get me to these events because I have an 8-year-old daughter, and that’s pretty much everything,” said Weber. “That’s what I do; that’s what my life revolves around. When you have something that huge in your life, it’s pretty easy to stay grounded.”

Before coming to New York and L.A., Weber always had a passion for acting. He started at a young age and continued all the way until he hit high school, where he became more involved in football and track, and less in the dramatic arts.

“Once I got into high school, it all became about musicals,” said Weber. “I’m not a real song-and-dance man…so I just got really involved in sports. When it came time to make decisions about my life, I thought to pursue [acting] a little further, and that led to my move to New York.”

In New York City, Weber studied at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting and landed a couple of modeling campaigns on the side, including a campaign with Abercrombie & Fitch (no surprise

there!).“Modeling for me was sort of what I did in the lieu of waiting tables or being a bartender,” said

Weber nonchalantly. “It was an opportunity that was there for me…and I took advantage of it.”After making his transition from modeling to acting and from New York to L.A., everything

started happening pretty fast for the actor. He scored perhaps his best-known role as Ben on “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and has made appearances in primetime hits, including “Bones,” “Burn Notice,” “House M.D.” and more.

And “90210” is not the last stop for Weber. He hopes to continue to seriously grow as an actor from the inside out, to strive to be the best he can be.

“I want to just see how far I can take this thing and see how far I can push myself and try to continue to play characters that are…not necessarily more complicated, but more complex than the last,” said Weber.

Earlier in the interview, he stated, “I am at a time in my life where I am starting to know…who I am and what I am about.”

And Weber, with his good looks and glowing resume put aside, is someone who’s as grounded and humble as they come.

While I know that trying to find that perfect romantic restaurant can be daunting, the truth is that when it comes to picking the right place to dine, the trick is just a little patient research. The goal? Finding great food with a great ambience without sacrificing the entirety of your work-study paycheck.

Lala’s delicately combines the best of Argentinean traditional dishes and L.A. cuisine, with an extensive menu to choose from. With locals pouring in and out on the daily, this place is clearly a West Hollywood favorite. And with appetizers starting at just $2.50 a plate and wine starting at just $4.50 a glass, what’s not to love? The restaurant also boasts a quaint and covered outdoor patio with overhead heating panels and romantic, dim lighting. In fact, once the average hungry regular is seated, one virtually forgets that you are just a few feet away from bustling Melrose.

Established in 2010, Steingarten is a new classy beer garden in West L.A. that is perfecting the art of a well-crafted bratwurst. This place has every type of dog you could imagine: beef, pork, veal, chicken, duck, lamb, alligator, rabbit, wild boar, venison, elk and even a chipotle apple and sage vegan option for the non-meat eaters. And although the menu does include more traditional dishes, I suggest you stick to one of their famed $7 sausages. Although the inside dining feels a little masculine, the outside seating offers a tabletop fire pit surrounded by vine-covered walls, offering a

more intimate experience.

iF LOs anGeLes isn’t the Greatest city for some of the best fusion cuisine in the world, then I don’t know what is. With well over 100 different types of nationalities and cultures residing in one boundless city, it’s only natural that our food is as ethnic and diverse as our people.

But fusion cuisine is nothing new. What classifies as ‘American’ nowadays is actually a mix of everything from Mexican to Italian to French to you-name-it. There are standout fusion restaurants, though, that feature unique combos of global cuisine, and they’re right in our backyard. So grab your utensils, get in your car, and let’s take a trip around the world in 30 miles. BierGarten L.a.Literally meaning ‘beer garden,’ this German sausage-and-beer serving restaurant is located in the heart of Koreatown, making for a deliciously enticing Asian gastropub experience. With Korean and Japanese delicacies like kimchi on American and Mexican food staples such as burgers and tacos, and authentically German beers, sausages and schnitzels all meshed into a cozy, casual sports bar environment, you’ll feel like you’re in food heaven. Flavors explode with spice, and unusual food pairings work surprisingly well together. The Biergarten Burger, a beef burger served on King’s Hawaiian sweet rolls, smeared with kimchi and layered with thinly sliced Spam is delicious, and the Gluster Burger combines Asian and Mexican flavors, topping your choice of meat with a fried green tomato, guacamole and an ezpazote aioli to die for. The fried rice is a must (one comes with strips of short-rib that melt in your mouth), and if you can

cOWBOys and turBansA painfully hipster environment is absolutely forgiven (if sitting on pianos in dim lighting next to a Buddha statue is your type of thing, we’re not judging you); Cowboys and Turbans gracefully combines Indian and Mexican cuisine for food that’s absolutely rich in flavor and unapologetically kicks you in the mouth. Tostadas are topped with mint chutney, pizzas and quesadillas include shrimp tikka, and a simple dish of chicken saag is transformed with a side of their jasmine rice, which is unbelievably simple yet unbelievably tasty. Their papadum nachos are delicate but pack in a super punch thanks to the masala. If you don’t know what typical Indian cuisine is like, order blind. You won’t fail with anything on the menu. BacO mercat Downtown L.A. shines as you eat your Baco, a flatbread taco-sandwich fusion influenced by the flavors of Eastern and Western Mediterranean and Mexican fare. The presentation of your food is beautiful, although you don’t quite know how to pick it up. When you finally get your hands around your Baco, the crispy shrimp in sriracha and chive dressing falls down, out and onto your plate, or the chicken escabeche runs down your

fingers. You take that first bite, and you don’t quite know what to do. A little zesty, a little sweet, bold and exciting, the flavor is one you’ve probably never experienced before. There aren’t many high-end Mediterranean and Mexican taco-sandwich fusion places we can think of, but we hope this is the start of many more to come. Be sure to make a reservation. Buddha’s BeLLyYes, you do in fact walk out of Buddha’s Belly, located in mid-city, with a belly as big as Buddha’s. Flavors from Japan, China, Thailand, Korea, Vietnam and more inspire the menu of this socially conscious and vegetarian/vegan friendly restaurant. The décor is beautiful, welcoming you with its Feng Shui-designed interior and exterior and friendly staff. You can’t go wrong with any of the appetizers; the Edamame, the Japanese Eggplant, the Chicken Potstickers – all are tasty bites spanning the continent. Known for their Ahi Tuna Burger and Black Alaskan Cod, Buddha’s Belly’s seafood and miso dressings seem to marry perfectly together in a flavor profile that’s subtler, more elegant and quieter than the others. Buddha’s Belly’s elegant food and affordable prices may make it the humble winner of Asian fusion cuisine in Los Angeles. many are Quick tO decLare colleges such as the University of Southern California and New York University as the cool, older brothers in the large family of U.S. film schools; however, aspiring filmmakers could benefit from looking into one particular smaller, boutique school that can spearhead their filmmaking careers: the International Academy of Filmmaking and Television (IAFT).

IAFT is truly an international school; there are campuses in Cebu (Philippines), Los Angeles, Miami and Hong Kong. Soon, the school will even open a campus in Antwerp, Belgium, according to IAFT CEO and director Kacy Andrews. Andrews has been involved in the entertainment industry for more than 20 years, including feature films, television series, theatre and animation.

“We are an international film school,” said Andrews. “We’re planning to expand. We’re picking [Antwerp] because the cost of living is manageable, and it’s a charming city.”

With campuses in different countries, IAFT is able to offer what most film schools (and other schools for that matter) can’t: a valuable, global film education and an experience of a lifetime.

“It’s that global experience,” said Andrews. “For example, students could study at one campus and then make a film in another country at another campus. Plus, there’s also a global network of alumni.”

Irena Byriel is a former student of IAFT who graduated in July 2012. Originally from Australia, she completed her diploma in filmmaking at the Cebu campus in the Philippines. According to her, attending the Cebu campus was a great balance between studying and relaxation.

“You are exposed to people, traditions and a lifestyle, which are different from your norm,” said Byriel. “It allows artists to discover newfound inspiration; it can be very deeply

moving. You could walk down the street and film a man carving a traditional wooden guitar by the road – or hop on a small boat and see some of the most untouched pristine white sand beaches.”

The global opportunities are not the only advantages students can benefit from attending IAFT. Most film schools are large, factory-like institutions that churn out hundreds of graduates. With so many students, how likely is it that each one will receive the same attention and develop a close relationship with the instructors? IAFT strives to have small classes and close mentor-student relationships within each class.

“The classes at IAFT are small and intimate. I don’t believe I was ever in a class that had more than 20 people in it,” said Byriel. “As a boutique school, this is what IAFT specializes in. It’s the one-on-one time that you get with your mentors. It’s a great team environment, and you become really close with your fellow peers.”

“Mentors know students’ names, the students get a lot of attention…we want to keep it that way,” added Andrews.

Students also don’t experience the typical hour-long boring lectures that most college students are accustomed to. Instead, classes are interactive, and students learn what filmmakers do in the “real world.”

“It’s a very hands-on program,” said Andrews. “The mentors come in, and teach in the classroom, and the students have a lot of lab work. They’re taking editing classes, and they learn from theory and go out and do it.”

“You get so much opportunity to go out and actually film,” added Byriel. “And you can only learn so much from sitting in the classroom; the best lessons are learned on set, making mistakes, solving problems. IAFT immerses you in the hands-on experience so the elements become second nature.”

What students learn in class is invaluable, as the mentors are film experts who know their stuff, to say the least. IAFT makes sure that the faculty consists of industry professionals who have a stellar resume and/or have natural teaching skills. The mentors include those who have experience working on the staff of the Sundance and TriBeCa Film Festivals, shows like “One Life to Live” and “All My Children,” movies like Mystic Pizza, and some are even involved with other film schools like USC and UCLA.

“We like our mentors to have worked in the industry for at least 10 years,” said Andrews. “Some of our mentors have been in the industry for 20 to 30 years. We look for people who have great backgrounds…we really look for people who are personal and engaging.”

Upon completion of the program, the job opportunities for IAFT graduates are endless. In the past, students have gone on to make their own projects, winning film festivals and launching television shows. For example, Byriel created a TV show in Cebu called “Urbanfolio,” which features architecture and product design in the Philippines. It was based off of her thesis project at IAFT.

“I decided to create my own company and television series, which would play on the local Cebu network,” said Byriel. “I was able to learn the business side [of producing], part of it whilst effectively knowing how to execute the episode shoots…I can now say that it is one of best TV productions created in Cebu.”

So for those who want to experience filmmaking on a global level in more intimate settings while still getting a top-notch film education, IAFT should not be easily overlooked.

“[IAFT] is not just about the education; it’s about the culture and lifestyle too,” said Byriel. “It’s an unique school, not just a film school. It’s a place of free communication and expression, an artist’s haven.”
