CALVERT COUNTY 4-H PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST March 3, 2019 This year’s Calvert County 4-H Public Speaking Contest will be held at the Northeast Community Center, Chesapeake Beach MD. Check-in will begin at 1:30 p.m. and the contest will begin at 2:00 p.m. Participants must pre-register for this event using 4-H Online. The Visual Communications category features artwork and graphic design entries created to promote 4-H in the community. All entries in this category will be submitted for judging at contest check-in. Visual Communications entries will be judged on-site and ribbons will be awarded during the awards ceremony at the end of the evening. 4-Hers may enter Visual Communications posters/graphics even if they cannot attend the contest. It is the responsibility of the 4-Her to send his/her entries to the contest with an adult (4-H parent or leader). Visual Communications entries will not be accepted in advance of the contest at the Calvert County 4-H Office; they will ONLY be accepted at the contest. This year’s Calvert County 4-H Public Speaking Contest will be held at the Northeast Community Center, Chesapeake Beach MD. 12. For all public speaking categories except Visual Presentations, the Champion presenter in each age group (except Clovers) will be eligible to represent Calvert County at the Maryland State 4-H Communications Contest at the University of Maryland on April 27, 2019. In the event the Champion cannot or chooses not to participate, the Reserve Champion presenter will be eligible to participate in the State contest.

13. Champions who choose to compete at the State Contest may only compete in one category. If a 4-Her wins more than one category at the County contest, s/he must choose in which category to compete at the State contest. If a participant wins Champion at the State contest, s/he may not enter the same category and age group a second time.

14. The names of the 4-Hers chosen in each category to represent Calvert County at the State Public Speaking Contest must be sent to the State 4-H Office by April 1, 2019. 4-Hers should be prepared to make an immediate decision whether they will participate in the State Contest, should they win Champion or Reserve Champion.

15. In the Visual Presentations category, 4-Hers who earn blue ribbons are eligible and encouraged to give their presentations in the “4-H Presents” program at the 2019 Maryland State Fair.

16. In the Visual Communications categories, 4-Hers who earn blue ribbons are eligible and encouraged to enter their posters and graphics in the 4-H Promotions classes at the 2019 Maryland State Fair.

17. Participants must register for the Public Speaking Contest via 4-H Online by February 27, 2019.

AWARDS

Judging will be conducted under the Danish System, using the attached scoresheets. Ribbons will be awarded as follows: Award Points Blue Ribbon 81-100 points Red Ribbon 61-80 points White Ribbon 41-60 points Participation Ribbon 0-40 points Champion and Reserve Champion will be chosen in each category and age group. Judges may choose not to award Champion/Reserve Champion ribbons in a category/age group if they feel no entries merit the award.

PUBLIC SPEAKING CATEGORIES

Prepared Speech Time Limits: Clovers: no limit Intermediates: 4-6 minutes Juniors: 3-5 minutes Seniors: 4-6 minutes *Judges may deduct points for presentations not meeting or exceeding time limits. Clovers will not be timed. Contestants may speak on any topic. The 4-Her does NOT have to be enrolled in a project that is the topic of the speech. The speech may be written for a specific audience, such as a 4-H club, PTA, Rotary Club, other youth group, school competition or assignment, etc. Participants should discuss topics that may be considered controversial with their 4-H leader or educator before the contest. Memorization is not encouraged. Notecards are permitted. Clovers and Juniors may use a complete script, written on notecards. Intermediates and Seniors may use only a key word outline. Notecards must be given to the judges at the end of the speech. Contestants should NOT introduce themselves as part of their speech. This will be done by an emcee or room host/hostess. Judges may ask questions of the presenters. Due to time constraints, questioning should be limited to two or three minutes per speaker. Visual Presentation TYPES OF VISUAL PRESENTATIONS: Demonstrations vs. Illustrated Talks A Demonstration is a talk in which the 4-Her shows the audience how to do something. The audience should be able to watch the presenter make or do the steps of the task. The 4-Hers should have a finished product to show the audience at the end of the presentation. Visual aids or posters should list main steps, ingredients, or supplies for the task. Due to time constraints, it is not necessary for the 4-Her to show every step in the task; s/he may show the main steps or show the project in phases, finally showing the finished product. For example, a 4-Her may demonstrate how to make a craft, build a birdhouse, or make a cake. An Illustrated Talk is a talk in which the 4-Her explains to the audience how to do something, but does not actually do it. Instead, the 4-Her uses posters or visual aids to illustrate his/her explanation. For example, a 4-Her may illustrate how to take care of a pet, grow a plant from a seed, judge livestock, or safely operate an ATV.

Visual Presentations may be made by an individual or by a team of two 4-Hers working together. If a team presentation is made, the age of the oldest team member will be used to determine age category. A table and easel will be provided for all presentations. Participants must furnish their own equipment, supplies, and visual aids. Electronic visual aids (i.e. laptop/projector and Powerpoint slides) may NOT be used. A preparation area will be provided for pre-presentation set-up. Live animals MAY NOT BE USED for ANY Visual Presentation. Visual Presentations should not be memorized. It is recommended notes be written on 3”x 5” cards. Notecards must be given to the judges at the end of the speech. Contestants should NOT introduce themselves as part of their speech. This will be done by an emcee or room host/hostess. Judges may ask questions of the presenters. Due to time constraints, questioning should be limited to two or three minutes per speaker. The contestant will then have the designated amount of time to prepare his/her speech on the selected topic. Contestants will be provided four 5 x 8-inch note cards on which to write a key word outline of their speech. Notes may be made on one side ONLY of each of the cards. Contestants may use fewer notecards if desired. Notecards must be given to the judges at the end of the speech. When presenting the speech, the speaker will be shown time cards at correctly-timed intervals indicating “1 minute,” “30 seconds,” and “STOP.” The speaker MUST end his/her speech when time expires.

Contestants will present an original radio spot (commercial) related to 4-H. The radio spot should be exactly 30 seconds in length, including music or sound effects (if any). Music or a sound effect may be used for introduction and/or background, but may not include a spoken introduction or “tag” by anyone other than the contestant. Music or sound effects used at the beginning or end of the presentation are considered to be part of the radio spot and must not cause the 30-second time limit to be exceeded. If music or a sound effect is used, the contestant must provide and operate the sound-making device. Contestants must provide a complete written script of the radio spot, including notations about music/sound effects, to the timekeeper to aid in timing accuracy. The script must be provided prior to the presentation. Questions will not be asked by judges in the Radio Spot category. Interpretation

Permitted works include plays, books, or other published sources. Selections may not be chosen from television or movie scripts. The participant may choose a selection of one of these types: Dramatic Prose, Humorous Prose, or Poetry. The contestant may dress in appropriate clothing/costume and may stand or sit as appropriate for the interpretation. Use of gestures and facial expressions are encouraged to enhance the interpretation. However, judges may deduct points for excessive movement or if gestures are distracting from the presentation.

The contestant is permitted to speak or interpret in the language of his/her choice. If using a language other than English, the contestant must inform the County 4-H Office a minimum of 10 working days prior to the event, to ensure an appropriately-qualified judge is available. The contestant must bring two (2) printed copies of their chosen narrative, including a complete reference citation. If these documents are in a language other than English, English translation must also be provided. These copies must be provided to judges prior to the presentation. Contestants should NOT introduce themselves as part of their speech. This will be done by an emcee or room host/hostess. Judges may ask questions of the presenters. Posters and graphics must feature the title/theme of the artwork and at least one OFFICIAL 4-H Clover. Other than the 4-H clover, entries may NOT contain copyrighted or trademarked images such as cartoon characters, brand logos, etc. 4-Hers may use “common creative license” graphics found on the internet or in software packages (clipart). Posters and graphics must contain information about how to learn more about or get involved with 4-H (i.e. County 4-H office contact info, club contact info, etc). Entries must be created solely by the 4-Her. All entries must be identified; the 4-Her’s name, 4-H age, and Club must be printed on the BACK of the entry, in the upper-hand left corner. Do NOT include the 4-Her’s name or other identifying data on the FRONT of the poster or graphic. Promotional Posters The poster must be exactly 14”x22” and created using standard-weight posterboard (white or color). The poster may be horizontal or vertical in orientation, and it must be two-dimensional (flat). The design may be created on one side of the poster only. 4-Hers may use any creative medium including crayon, marker, paint, computer-generated graphics, stickers, collage, etc. 4-Hers may enter one poster in EACH of the following two classes:

• Themed Poster: “Ready, Set, Go” • General Poster: 4-Her’s Choice - ANY theme or slogan promoting 4-H

Promotional Graphic Art Designs MUST be computer-generated (software examples: Photoshop, Microsoft Publisher, etc). All artwork created must be ORIGINAL; do not use copyrighted or trademarked images, graphics, or photos downloaded from the Internet. (EXCEPTION: You may download/use the OFFICIAL 4-H Clover graphic – but ONLY the clover, not any banner or graphic created around it). “Common creative license” graphics, photos, or clipart may be used. Designs may not be larger than 8”x10” and may be horizontal or vertical in orientation. Designs should be printed on 8”x10” photo paper (glossy or matte) or on 8.5”x11” cardstock or coated paper. Printed designs must be mounted on a firm mat-weight board (no posterboard) and matted to 11”x14” size. Pre-cut mats may be used. Matting/mounting board may be white or color. Design Hints: Be creative with your design, send a clear message, be sure your message is readable

(fonts, backgrounds, color scheme, etc). 4-Hers may enter one graphic in EACH of the following two classes:

• County: A design promoting Calvert County 4-H • State: A design promoting the Maryland 4-H Program • Open: A design promoting any 4-H project area or 4-H in general

HOW TO ENTER THE CONTEST USING 4-H ONLINE

The 4-Her must be actively enrolled in 4-H for 2019. If the 4-Her’s enrollment is not active, s/he will not be able to access the event registration. If the 4-Her’s enrollment status is NOT “Active”, do the following:

• If status is “Inactive” – complete re-enrollment for 2019 and submit. The enrollment will be approved once the $10.00 annual re-enrollment fee is received by the Calvert County 4-H Office.

• If status is “Pending” – it is awaiting approval. Contact the Calvert County 4-H Office. • If status is “Incomplete” – the enrollment is missing information or has not been properly submitted.

To access the Event Registration: 1. Log in to your family profile in 4-H Online. From the welcome screen click on the yellow “Continue to Family” button. You will be taken to the “Member List” screen.

2. Scroll to the bottom of the “Member List” screen. You will see a box titled “Register a Member in an Event – Only Members with an “Active” Enrollment Status May Enter”. Choose the 4-Her’s name and event from the drop-down menus and click the “Register” button.

3. Fill in your entry using the drop-down menus, text fields, and check boxes. You must complete both Public Speaking entries (drop-down and text box) to move forward with the registration. If you do not want to enter a Public Speaking event, choose “None” from the drop-down menu and type “None” in the text box. NOTE: Extemporaneous Speaking participants will not know their speech topic/title at entry; type “Unknown” or “TBD” in the text box. Click the “Continue” button.

4. The “Cart” screen will appear and show that there is no charge for this event. Click the “Check Out” button.

5. A “Payment” screen will appear, and you will see a filled dot beside the check option. You do not need to do anything with this screen. Click the “Select Payment Method” button.

6. A “Confirm” screen will appear. Check the information and click the “Confirm Order” button to register for the Communications Contest.

7. The Registration Confirmation screen will appear, confirming your 4-Her’s entries and contest information. Changes cannot be made to a confirmed registration via 4-H Online; if your 4-Her needs to change or cancel his/her registration, contact Ari Strahl at [email protected] or call 410-535-3662. REGISTRATION WILL CLOSE AT 11:59 PM ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2019. No changes will be allowed after that date.
