School boards are governed bystate law and must carry out thatlaw. This responsibility includesestablishing the policies by whichlocal schools are governed. Inaddition, the board is tasked withrepresenting the public’s voicein public education and settingstandards for achievement. Cal-vert County Board of Educationmembers are each elected for afour-year term. As representa-tives of their communities, schoolboard members mirror the diversedemocracies they serve. Localcontrol of education through theboard of education has made itpossible for schools to enable stu-dents to fulfill their potential.
Theboardholds twomeetingspermonth except in January, June, July
and August when only one meetingis held. The meetings are scheduledon Thursdays. The dates are set tak-ing into consideration holidays andschool closings. The calendar forthe meetings can be found on theCCPS website. There is an oppor-tunity for public comments at themonthly business meeting. Tenta-tive agendas for board meetings areavailable on the CCPS website onthe Monday prior to the scheduledmeeting.
Other special meetings and hear-ings are scheduled on an as-neededbasis. Administrative and/or closedsessions are not open to the publicas permitted by the Maryland OpenMeetings Act, Section 3-305(b) ofthe General Provisions Article of theAnnotated Code of Maryland andSection 3-103 of the General Provi-sions Article of the Annotated Codeof Maryland.

The Calverton School, founded in 1967, is a pri-vate school located in Huntingtown. The 153- acrecampus boasts modern facilities and recently con-structed dorms that house foreign exchange andother students. The school is composed of a LowerSchool for preschool through grade 5;Middle Schoolfor grades 6 through 8; and Upper School for grades9 through 12. Enrollment for 2013-2014 was 350students total. The student-teacher ratio is 11:1,with the average class size at 14 students. Considered to be themodel for qual-ity, compassionate care for people fac-ing incurable illness or injury, hospicecare involves a team-oriented approachto expert medical care, pain manage-ment and emotional and spiritual sup-port expressly tailored to the patient’sneeds and wishes. The Burnett-Calvert Hospice House,located in Prince Frederick, is open andwelcoming patients. The hospice houseis ahome for those living their final dayswith an illness who cannot be cared forin their own place of residence. No oneis declined hospice care or services dueto inability to pay. Calvert Hospice also offers bereavement servic-es to anyone in the community grieving the lossof someone close. Services include adult supportgroups; “Bridges” support group for children andteens and their families; summer day camps for
children and teens; and grief counseling for those ofany age. All bereavement programs are offered at nocharge to those in Calvert County.
In addition, Calvert Hospice offers a “We HonorVeterans” program to provide a “final salute” to warveterans of theU.S.military and strengthen relation-ships with VA centers and other veteran organiza-tions.

• Real Estate Taxes are billed for the period July 1 through June 30, and typically get mailed by mid-July.• Annual bills are due by September 30th, and semi-annual bills are due September 30th & December 31st.• New Construction tax bills are billed for the period January 1 through June 30, and are sent out for the construction of anew home, or a significant improvement to an existing home. Bills are typically sent out by the end of January.
• All tax bills are mailed directly to the property owner. If you have an escrow, please forward the bill to your lender.• Personal property tax bills are mailed through the taxable year, July 1 through June 30, depending on when the personalproperty tax returns are filed by a business
• E-check and credit card payments may be made online or by phone at 1-888-272-9829 for a convenience fee.• You can renew your vehicle registration for a $1 convenience fee. We accept checks and cash for payment.• Animal licenses may be purchased from our office, $20 for unneutered and $7 for neutered, proof of rabies required.• For your convenience, an after-hours drop box is located at the rear of the circuit court house.• Our office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
