March 2016 marked the sec-ond time in a year that

Health Promotion (HP) and Ca-nadian Forces Station (CFS) Alert worked collectively to provide a “Strengthening the Forces” workshop for members stationed in Canada’s most northern permanently inhab-ited site using video teleconfer-encing (VTC).

This time around, the focus was Mental Fitness and Manag-ing Stress, something everyone can relate to, but certainly those stationed at CFS Alert for six-month periods.

For an hour, approximately 12 members of the Station, along with the HP team, talked about stress management tools and identified exercises to assist with

mental fitness – a core competen-cy for operational effectiveness.

“Technology has made the exchange of ideas so simplified that it almost felt as though we

were in their conference room in Alert or they were in ours at 8 Wing,” noted Lisa Refausse, manager of Health Promotions at 8 Wing/ Cana-dian Forces Base (CFB) Trenton.

Three members of the Health promotions team – Lisa Refausse, Brenda Riddell,

health promotion specialist, and Pam Holm-stead, conducted the VTC session.

Feedback from this type of exercise was positive last year and a report about the VTC went all the way up to 1 Canadian Air Division (1 CAD), accord-ing to Lisa Refausse during this year’s VTC effort.

Letters to the Editor:

A Military Community NewspaperThe CONTACT newspaper is a Personnel Support Programs

(PSP) entity. Our newspaper relies almost solely on revenues generated through advertising and sponsorships.

In 2012, the federal government mandated that the offi ce of

the Assistant Deputy Minister (Infrastructure and Environ-ment) (ADM(IE)) centralize the management of over $26 billion dollars in real property assets. Since then, ADM(IE) has taken a close look at its future. What an opportunity to think about and shape who we want to be as an organization.

ADM (IE) has changed a lot since 2012. Before then, the Navy, Army, Air Force, and other DND organizations all managed their

own infrastructure, meaning that the Department of National Defence had nine unique groups managing its real property port-folio. As part of its transforma-tion, in April 2014, ADM(IE) reduced the number of groups managing its real property as-sets from nine to four, and in April 2015, ADM(IE) stood up the entire Pacifi c region, further reducing the number of manag-ers from four to three. Inevitably, there were a few growing pains, but there was a lot more learn-ing, and ADM(IE) will take those

lessons forward as we “leave home” and launch ourselves into full-fl edged “adulthood.” After ADM(IE) achieves Full Opera-tional Capacity (FOC) on April 1, 2016, we will have offi cially reduced the number of real prop-erty managers from nine to one.

ADM(IE)’s priority is to effi -ciently manage and build an in-tegrated portfolio of real proper-ty assets and to provide excellent service in support of Canada’s armed forces. We will update our business processes, explore po-tential savings and effi ciencies,

eliminate costly duplication, change the way we manage real property project delivery, and we will do all of this in an en-vironmentally sustainable way. ADM(IE) has been working hard to transform the way it does busi-ness and to shore up its HR ca-pacity so that we can fulfi ll these commitments, and we will con-tinue to do so as we move toward FOC on Apr. 1, 2016, and beyond.

As we transition, ADM(IE)’s core values will remain at the heart of every decision we make: our fundamental duty to sup-

port CAF operations, our defence strategy commitments, and our promise to uphold the federal gov-ernments’ environmental agenda and real property objectives.

It takes courage to grow up, and strength to leave behind what you’re used to, but we don’t grow up when things are easy — real growth happens when we challenge ourselves. I look for-ward to meeting the challenges ahead with the help of my dedi-cated team. To ADM(IE)’s future, may it be bright and brimming with opportunity.

8 Wing/CFB Trenton recently received two new Drop Zone Load Recovery vehicles, which are utilized in the recovery of air cargo dropped in Mountain View. What do you want to be when you grow up?

A message from the ADM(IE)

that, we end up having to talk about things like this,” he noted. “As members of the CAF, we go out in the world and we do our work, we are there representing Canadian values and there is no better value in my opinion than that value of inclusiveness and diversity that is the hallmark of Canada around the world. It is through respect and dignity that we make that work.”

Lieutenant-Colonel (Lt.-Col.) Bill Church, the champion for DVMAG, reminded everyone at the lunch and learn event about the catalyst for the day – March 21, 1960 in Sharpville, South Af-rica. On that day, police opened fire on a peaceful demonstration taking place against apartheid in which 1,600 people were killed.

“That event shocked the con-science of the world and put racism on the global agenda,” Lt.-Col. Church recalled. “Let’s take today to reflect in such a manner that we will continue to respect the dignity of others, we embrace that diversity because it makes us stronger.”

Dr. Alexander’s history lesson on Canadian diversity should be taught in all Canadian schools. She is a member of the Quinte Chapter of the United Nations Association in Canada, is in-volved in the Model UN school program and serves as a minister

at Bridge Street United Church and other congregations – and she has a better handle on Cana-dian history than most.

Her short, 20-minute talk on the cultural diversity and multi-culturalism which is the founda-tion of Canada was well thought out and originated from an obvi-ously proud Canadian who took her listeners back to their Ca-nadian roots and brought them up-to-date in those fascinating 20 minutes.

“In celebrating diversity in Canada, I begin with the fact that our aboriginal hoop dancers in-form us that their use of hoops is a symbol of the circle of life and this circle was pregnant with di-versity during the birth of the nation called Canada,” she be-gan, adding that indigenous peo-ples helped the early immigrants settle into life in Canada.

“Our real past is diverse, our real past is inter-cultural,” she noted. “The first 250 years of settled life in Canada was diverse – New France, the Hudson Bay Company and the North West Company consciously built their place here on the indigenous ideas of mutual dependency and partnership.”

The Loyalists also learned how to survive in Canada from the ab-originals and they were partners in early trades of fur trapping, fishing and whaling.

“We are the outcome of that

diverse, inter-cultural experi-ence. The world sees us as having a talent to live competently with diversity and this talent is seen as our particular contribution to western civilization in the 21st century,” Dr. Alexander stated.

“If the story of Canadian cul-tural diversity has been a tale of hardship, and denial, it is also an odyssey of hope and triumph and that is what this day is all about. Today we celebrate our Canadian aboriginal foundations as well as the efforts of early settlers and immigrants to establish them-selves and the cold, hard fact of their survival.”

She noted that it was in 1971 that, for the first time in Cana-dian history, the majority of im-migrants were of non-European ancestry, a situation which has continued since.

“Seven years later, a new im-migration act affirmed Canada’s commitment to the protection and resettlement of refugees. The Vietnamese boat people were its immediate benefactors. We celebrate the determination of Canadians building a country admired for its multiculturalism policy, a model to the fractured world of how to fix diverse sensi-bilities and cultural values into a consensus, into a national char-acter that is both pragmatic and visionary,” she said.

“We celebrate today the cour-age of Canadians to keep on go-ing because there is no going home again,” she acknowledged. “Our languages, our world re-ligions, our diverse culture, of-fer us a richness of human life, a depth of understanding and a challenge of complexity that is worth the struggle to find our own solutions within the Cana-dian context of mutual respect and inter-dependence.”

She said Ca-nadians cele-brate the Inter-national Day of

Elimination of Racial Discrimi-nation because Canadian stories are aboriginal stories, settler’s stories, immigrant stories and refugee stories – all stories of di-versity.

“Today we celebrate this com-plex diversity beside a visionary Prime Minister who recently reminded Washington and the world that alone we make prog-ress, but together we make his-tory.”

Captain (Capt.) Isabel Courchesne, a physiotherapy of-ficer with 24 Canadian Forces Health Services, had an experi-ence as a visible minority in an exercise to Mongolia in 2015.

Called Exercise CONQUEST, the goal of the cooperative ef-

fort was to provide humanitar-ian assistance and to share best practices as well as enhance inter-operability within the multi-national health services team made up of members from Korea, India, the United States, Mongolia and Canada.

Lodged at the Mongolian Armed Forces National Defence university compound where space, electricity and water were options, Capt. Courchesne ad-vised her listeners to consider staying at hotels if they ever vis-ited Mongolia.

Her first real feeling of all eyes on her was in the cafeteria for breakfast, she recalled, where officer cadets in the Mongolian

The Trenton Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) is

enforcing the omerta rule, but it is known that there will be some very unique and interesting live auction items available this year, according to MFRC executive di-rector Tamara Kleinschmidt.

“I can’t say any more than that at this point, but we are going to have some pretty unique live auc-tion items,” she said teasingly.

That makes the early bird pur-chase of tickets prior to April 1 for $125 more important than ever for those planning to at-tend the MFRC Invisible Ribbon Gala fundraiser on May 7 at the National Air Force Museum of Canada. After April 1, ticket prices go up to $150 each by that time, late ticket purchasers may be gambling they will be able to purchase a ticket, according to MFRC Gala committee chairman Major (Maj.) Leo Phillips.

He indicated there are a maxi-mum of 40 tables available at the Gala but Stefanie Wolf, MFRC special events coordinator, indi-cated there are already corporate tables sold and their sponsor ta-bles will take up a number of oth-er tables, so tickets are already at a premium.

Tickets are available on line or they can be purchased at the MFRC, according to Maj. Phil-lips, who expects many of the tickets to be sold prior to April 1.

They developed the new web-site designed specifically for tick-et sales and it is expected to boost early ticket sales to the point they will be in very high demand and sold out early.

Sponsors and online and live auction items are still being sought and auction donations can take place until April 8.

This year’s themed Gala fea-tures the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan but follows the MFRC theme of Together We are Stronger. Proceeds from this year’s event go towards the ex-pansion of service in Belleville and Frankford/Batawa.

The Trenton MFRC is a non-profit organization that promotes and facilitates community based services that enrich, strengthen and embrace the quality of life for military families. The Trenton MFRC serves over 3,500 military members and over 6,000 depen-dents living in the Quinte region. Every year, hundreds of military members and families utilize the resources offered by the Trenton MFRC and local community sup-port ensures that these resources are available to every person who walks through their doors.

Apart from the interesting live, silent and online auction items that will be available, this event also features an extravagant, lo-cally sourced meal enhanced by good fellowship with friends and other interesting people within the community.

This year’s guest speaker will be Major-Gen-eral (Maj.-Gen.) D.L.R. Wheeler, 1 Canadian Air Division (1 CAD) Com-mander. Watch this newspaper for a future arti-cle on Maj.-Gen. Wheeler’s topic for the Invisible Ribbon Gala.

The key to your enjoyment of this event is to get those tick-ets purchased early so you do not miss out,

according to Maj. Phil-lips.

“Based on success we had last year, we expect the early bird tickets to do really quite well, so they should be pur-chased quickly to avoid disappointment,” Maj. Phillips stated.

424 (Transport & Rescue) Squadron’s Search and Res-

cue (SAR) Technicians “dropped in” to Hubbs Sugarbush and Sweetwater Cabin Saturday morning to help kick off Maple In the County and they were per-haps as happy to be involved in this sweet exercise as the people were to see them arrive.

Two parachutists dropped from the crisp, blue skies into a corn field just north of the sugar bush along Rednersville Road much to the appreciation of a large number of people of all ages out to see the spectacle.

And Lieutenant-Colonel (Lt.-Col.) Dany Poitras, Command-ing Officer of 424 (Transport & Rescue) Squadron, topped off the “drop-in” by landing his CH-146 Griffon helicopter into that same corn field amidst a swirl of flying corn husks.

424 (Transport & Rescue) Squadron and 8 Wing Command-ing Officer Colonel (Col.) Colin

Keiver and his entourage were the hits of the morning, after the pancakes and maple syrup, of course.

Given a plaque of apprecia-tion by Lake Lodge No. 215 A.F. & A.M. of Ameliasburgh for their participation and as a sign of appreciation for military person-nel and their families at Cana-dian Forces Base (CFB) Trenton, Col. Keiver said he had actually joined the air force so he didn’t have to eat outside in tents.

”But I did it today and I thor-oughly enjoyed it, so maybe I made the wrong choice,” he laughed.

He said events like that on Sat-urday morning were mutually beneficial.

“It means the world for us to be here,” he noted. “We live in the community and our ability to get back out into the community and give back to the community means so much to us. I honestly think we get as much out of this as you do.”

An important thing to remem-ber while on deployment, she felt, was that CAF members must respect the fact that those people may not do things the same way Canadians would and, by giving that respect, they would get re-spect in return.

Kamal Khera, Parliamentary Secretary of Health and a first generation Canadian, thanked the CAF members for their ser-vice and sacrifices to keep the Canadian system strong and its citizens out of harm’s way.

“The goal of the Interna-tional Day of Elimination of Racial Discrimination is to cre-ate awareness and to renew our commitment to equality and fair treatment for all of human kind,” she said. “This commitment calls for action internationally, nation-ally and at a local level, and in communities such as the Canadi-an Forces Base here in Trenton. “

She quoted both Prime Minis-ters Trudeau in her talk, noting that Prime Minister Pierre El-liott Trudeau said in 1971 in ref-erence to Canada: “There is no of-ficial culture, nor does any ethnic group take precedence over any other. No citizen or group of citi-zens is other than Canadian and we all should be treated fairly.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, she said, has been quoted many times saying, “A Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian.”

military are treated consid-erably differently than Ca-nadian officer cadets.

“The first time I entered that cafeteria in the morn-ing, all the eyes turned on me. It was not because I was different, but because the recruits, the officer cadets there are not use to seeing a woman in uni-form. The other factor was I was eating completely different food than they were, so I think there was a little bit of envy there. We were eating great food and they were eating bread and some kind of soup all the time, like every meal,” she noted.

A regular work day for her during this exercise was seeing 32 patients, in-

cluding young children. She also liked the home vis-its where she got to meet families in their dwellings.

Capt. Courchesne felt high self-esteem is impor-tant on deployments such as the one she was on in Mongolia.

“I believe that self-esteem is a really important thing when you deploy to some-where where you are differ-ent, so my experience and self-esteem actually helped me to look professional so that the parents would lis-ten to me and trust me in regards to the treatment I was providing to their little kids,” she stated.

She told of an incident where people who would begin lining up to see a physiotherapist at 2 a.m. would refuse to see the

Mongolian military phys-iotherapist so they could go to the Canadian.

“I gained valuable train-ing and experience ex-ecuting the humanitarian assistance exercise,” she added. “Having the cour-age to get out of our com-fort zone and having self-esteem is just going to help us when we go on those exercises. It’s just going to make us more professional and people will listen to us.

“The other thing that I realized is that being in the CAF is really an honour and privilege. Our reputa-tion around the world is great, so that the minute we enter into another country, people are not really seeing me, they are seeing a CAF member who is there to help them.”

body this value in the laws they create and in the manner in which they lead this country.

“There’s always more that can be done to be more inclusive and to

be more considerate to individuals of different cultures and religions in our military. The more inclusive we are, the stronger our military will become,” she added.

Certain types of offi ce work particularly lend themselves to telecommuting - work-ing at home on a computer terminal linked to the offi ce system. Clerical, data entry, sales, writing, art, design, planning and other tasks can be done off the usual work premises.

Working at home does have its hazards, many of them the same as those in the con-ventional workplace. If you work at home, you must plan your work station with safety in mind. Regular inspections of the work area will help prevent accidents.

Home workers must follow the same safety standards which apply to the com-pany’s regular locations. Inspections for safety may also be part of your company’s work-at-home plan.

Here are some reminders about home offi ce safety:• Set up your work area with ergonomics in mind. Keep frequently used materials within easy reach and other items out of the way. Arrange tools and materials so you can move them without exces-sive stretching, twisting or bending. You should be able to look at your computer screen without tipping your head back and causing neck strain.

• Provide adequate lighting. Overall light-ing should be adequate to prevent falls and other mishaps. Lamps should be po-sitioned for close-up work such as read-ing. Your work surface and computer screen should be free of glare from lights and windows.

• Makeshift offi ce furniture won’t do. In-stead of using a cast-off kitchen table or chair, acquire the right furniture. Your company may have a program for provid-ing the offi ce furnishings.

• Desks and tables should be at a comfort-able height so you can work with minimum

strain to your back, arms and h a n d s . Your chair should be adjustable and should support your back properly.

• Eliminate tripping hazards. Electrical cords must be kept out of traffi c areas. Boxes of paper and other materials must be stored where no one can fall over them.

• Drawers of desks and fi ling cabinets can also pose tripping problems if they are left open. And fi ling cabinets have another hazard - tipping over if the top drawers are too heavy in contrast to the bottom drawers. When fi lling a fi ling cab-inet, start with the bottom drawers and work up.

• Don’t let down your guard about fi re safety at home. Keep an ABC fi re extin-guisher in your work area, ready to fi ght fi res in paper, fl ammable liquids and en-ergized electrical equipment.

• Take care to not overload circuits. If the room you are working in was not origi-nally designed as an offi ce, you probably need to have it rewired to accommodate electronic equipment such as computers, printers and copiers.

Try not to overload your own mental cir-cuits either. Working at home can be stressful. Learn to close the door on your offi ce at the end of the work day and for-get about the job. Concentrate on your tasks during your shift and keep house-hold interruptions to a minimum.

A safety-minded approach to your job will help you reap the personal and career benefi ts of working at home - just like the good old days!

the Countyfamilies and it was a pleasant surprise for owners Brian and Karen Walt, who have been in business for about 16 years and participating in Maple in the County for about three years.

“We really have no idea how many people have been through here this morning, but I would say if they keep coming like this, we’ll have more today than we would normally have,” Brian stated in a brief break from try-ing to get as much sweet product into as many hungry stomachs as possible.

“It was minus 18 Celsius here first thing this morning,” laughed Major Leo Phillips, who was the DJ for the day at this sug-ar bush, which offered a military and first responder discount for all fire fighters, ambulance and police.

The cold nights were welcome to the syrup producers, as long as the weather warmed up above zero during the day, because that becomes ideal tapping weather, although production had been good to this point in the season,
