NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWSby Connie Marchione

17TH ANNUAL DEAF SENIOR BOWLERS OF AMERICA DRAWS 75 ENTRIESLAS VEGAS — With another similar deaf senior tournament going for the first time on the

same dates at the east coast, the 17th annual Deaf Senior Bowlers of America (DSBA) tournament lost some of the Eastern deaf bowlers. Only 51 men seniors aged 55 and over and 24 women seniors aged 50 and over from as far east as Texas are entered at the Orleans Hotel Bowling Center this week. The total is 13 less than last year’s 88 (58 men and 30 women).

DSBA newly elected Secretary-Treasurer Ed Abakumoff issued a release that “walk-ins” at the Orleans Bowling Center are welcome as long as they accept to pay the entry fee plus $10.00 late entry fine. The tournament must have an even number for the doubles event.

Of the present 75 entries, five last year champions return to defend their titles. PBA Announces ESPN and Xtra Frame Schedules, New Broadcast Team Concept

Pedersen, Jakubowski to team up in booth across both media platforms during coverage of PBA World Series of Bowling V

SEATTLE – As the 2012-13 Professional Bowlers Association season enters the homestretch with the PBA World Series of Bowling V at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas beginning Oct. 25, the PBA has unveiled a new broadcast team concept along with its ESPN telecast schedule for the balance of the year and the start of the new 2014 season.

Starting Sunday, Dec. 1, at 1 p.m. ET, ESPN will televise seven two-hour events from WSOB V, beginning with the PBA Cheetah Championship and running consecutive Sundays through Jan. 12. In all, ESPN will air 36 hours of PBA action through April 13 – up from 29.5 hours in 2013 – as part of its new five-year agreement announced earlier this summer. (Full ESPN schedule at end of press release).

Redefining its coverage strategy during WSOB V, the PBA will utilize the same broadcast team across both its online streaming video service Xtra Frame and ESPN television platforms by fea-turing the primary duo of longtime ESPN analyst Randy Pedersen and play-by-play voice Mike Jakubowski. Jakubowski, who previously worked the PBA Summer Series on ESPN, has called the action on the Xtra Frame for the past five years.

Pedersen, who will return to the ESPN booth for the 13th consecutive year in 2014, is also bowl-ing in the World Series, which will provide both Xtra Frame and ESPN viewers with unique insight from the viewpoint of a competitor. The 13-time PBA Tour titlist and 2011 PBA Hall of Fame inductee made a successful return to PBA competition in 2013 after a seven-year injury-plagued absence, winning the first tournament he entered as a PBA50 Tour competitor.

“I think it’s going to be a huge positive to experience the World Series and gain the first-hand knowledge that comes with competing over a grueling schedule with the other players,” said Peder-sen, who will tie the late Hall of Famer Billy Welu for the second most seasons as PBA Tour color analyst (Nelson Burton Jr. holds the record with 23 seasons alongside Chris Schenkel for ABC). “I’m grateful for having been able to be the Tour’s color analyst all these years and to be mentioned in the same sentence with a great like Billy Welu is an honor.”

Joining the ESPN broadcast team will be former Miss USA Kimberly Pressler as sideline re-porter. It will be Pressler’s fourth PBA World Series of Bowling.

Xtra Frame’s 60 hours of WSOB V live coverage from Oct. 25-31 will also find Jason Thomas, Jef Goodger and Matt Freiberg working with Jakubowski and Pedersen in providing extended com-mentary during World Series qualifying and match play rounds.

Jakubowski, the “voice of the PBA” for the past five years on Xtra Frame and as the PBA’s pub-lic address announcer, has previously done national TV play-by-play work for the American Bowl-ing Congress’ World Team Challenge, USBC Masters and Intercollegiate Team Championships.

“I’m honored to represent the Professional Bowlers Association and fans of pro bowling along-side Randy,” said Jakubowski, a Milwaukee native.

The 2014 PBA schedule begins with a live telecast of the opening round of PBA League compe-tition on Sunday, Jan. 26, at noon ET from Thunderbowl Lanes in suburban Detroit and will include seven PBA League telecasts culminating with the Elias Cup Finals. Other highlights on the 2014 schedule are the sixth annual Chris Paul PBA League All-Stars charity event from Lucky Strike-L.A. Live, which has become a Super Bowl Sunday tradition, airing Feb. 2; live coverage of the USBC Masters on Feb. 23, and live coverage of the PBA Tournament of Champions on April 6.

New to the ESPN schedule is the finals of the Teen Masters Grand Championship, presented by the PBA and conducted on the World Series television lanes, which will follow the Japan Cup telecast on ESPN at 5 p.m. ET on Jan. 19.

PBA fans can subscribe to Xtra Frame for a monthly subscription fee $7.99, an annual fee of $64.99, or a daily fee of $5 during the World Series. For subscription and schedule information, visit pba.com and click on the Xtra Frame link.

Pumping adrenalin, Michael Zhang was on a roll when he threw 6 strikes in 8 frames against Robert Contre-ras who bowled a strike on the

1st frame but couldn’t convert back-to-back splits on his 2nd and 3rd frame. Robert’s double came too late in the tenth as he finished 212 against Michael’s 267 game. Robert Contreras placed 3rd for $200. Robert bowled very well in his first top 16 experience

Top seed Galdino Chavez met Michael Zhang for the title. Michael started clean through the 6th frame. Gal-dino struggling, was down 31 pins after the 8th frame having 4 open frames but he tried to keep up. A limping Galdino came back and threw a strike on his 9th frame.

A punch out on the 10th means Michael would need a mark to win. Instead of the strike, he got a big split 4-6-10 his first ball on the 10th. Gal-dino Chavez takes 2nd place with his 179 game for $500 while Michael Zhang cele-brates his 1st ABTA Title with his 221 game.

Michael took home the guaranteed prize fund of $1000, PLUS $850 for the OP-TIONAL Cash & Carry, PLUS $100 for wearing his ABTA Shirt, PLUS $100 for using his Global 900 Eagle ball, for a to-tal of $2050! One of the Good Guys wins again!!!

First time Champion Mi-chael Zhang is from Monterey Park and he used his Global 900 Eagle ball drilled by Jim-my Wong to secure the win. He thanks Michael Kong for coaching and Andrew Lung for his bowling ball. He also extends his thanks to fel-low BOWLMANIA bowlers for their support and cheers - Samson, Jerry, Cecilia, Gi-

ang, Bennett, Joseph, Sean, Jimmy, Ada, Holden and apologizes for failing to men-tion the rest individually as his mind is still up in the clouds. Galdino Chavez who placed 2nd this time around is from Fontana. Same as last week, he used his Storm Dimension bowling ball drilled by Tony! Thanking GOD above all else, he thanks his wife Syl-via, along with their children - Gustavo, Jasmine, Galdino and Sylvia. Again, he thanks the ABTA tournament and staff for a great event.

Third place winner Robert Contreras is from La Puente and he used his Storm IQ Pearl drilled by Dave Edis of King Pin Pro Shop at West Covina. He sends love to his wife, Heidi, for all her support. He also thanks Dave Edis for tak-ing care of all of his equipment and to all ABTA bowlers who cheered. At the Bowlium his wife arrived a bit late due to her Photo Business appointment... Winner of this week’s new bowling ball from our sponsor, Global 900 was Ping Romero.

FONTANA — After one month of bowling John Fitzgerald is the top senior bowler at Foothill Lanes. His 237 average is about ten pins above the pace set by MARV SARGENT and P.J. BUCK-NER. After Fitzgerald, Sar-gent and Buckner the next best Fontana senior scorers include CORKY DeMAIO, RED DIXON, DEL KARPER and JIM STARK.

These fellas are bowling in Foothill Lanes Senior Handi-cap Trio League, “THE BEST SENIOR LEAGUE IN THE CITRUS BELT.” It is our best senior league because of the large number of top bowlers competing.

The league includes at least seven Citrus Belt Hall of Fam-ers and at least a dozen other long time Citrus Belt stars.

Perfect games have been rolled in the league by TERRY HODGSON, DEL KARP-ER, and BOB RICHARDS. The high games rolled by the women include 266 by LEANNA BARNES, 257 by SUE LEE SANTERO and 247 by SARAH HARTMAN and SHERRY WILLIAMS. The high series to date are a 773 by STEVE STRICKLAND and a 653 by SUE LEE SANTERO.

My thanks to league secre-tary LEE FITZGERALD for keeping me informed and the BOWLING NEWS for sup-porting Citrus Belt bowlers.

BOWLING POINTS TO PONDERIf it doesn’t matter whether you win or lose, then don’t

bother to keep score. An optimist is a person who starts building a 5 million dollar bowling center with a mere 5 mil-lion dollars.

Wouldn’t it be nice if some of the self professed experts on pro bowling and pro tournaments took in a pro tour-nament more than once a year or so? In some bowling centers everything works when it comes to scoring. In oth-ers, nothing works. And that’s why averages from place to place can vary as much as 40 points.

One thing you can still get cheaply is that extra frame of bowling you thought the deskman wouldn’t notice. Who’s in worse shape than the bowler-golfer who shoots in the 130s in both sports? A bowler can usually tell how good his reputation is by how difficult it is for him to live up to it.

In most sports the spectator is fulfilled through identifi-cation with the player in action rather than through the ac-tion. That helps watchers feel like they are doers. In bowl-ing, people are doers, in the action, and they can also be watchers, so they gain from both activities. I still can’t get over the sight of a bowler pullling up to a tournament site in a $300 car, and then unloading $3,000 worth of bowling equipment.

***********************************************************

mORE PEzzANOKnocking down 10 pins on the first ball earns you a strike

on the scoresheet. If you rack up 12 strikes in a row you have a 300 game, yet in reality you have knocked down only 120 pins. So why don’t we say the final score is 300 points, rather than pins knocked down.

Maybe it’s time for a shot clock to speed up league and tournament bowling—as is done in pro competition. When will the bowling world understand that a membership card does not make a bowler a pro, now does the lack of one make the person an amateur — in ability. You always hear about champions and winning bowlers being such good sports. Why not? The bowling campus in Texas continues to progress though the Hall of Fame and Museum could use a lot more space to display the interesting and informa-tive memorabilia acquired over the years.

A question often asked is how many balls does a pro bowler use in a year. Some use eight, and others have been known to use 80. Many times the happy ending to a lot of nights of bowling is the simple fact that the night has ended.

TV reported that at a recent tournament, golf tourna-ment that is, a nice guy competitor purchased a lemonade at a stand manned by youngsters and left an amazingly high tip, one that if enough struggling golfers or bowlers could count on customers like him they might be better off in the lemonade business.

BURBANK — This week, as I was coaching my small youth league on Monday mornings, it reminded me how much all of us, as bowlers, need a regular tune up in skills and technique. No matter how long you’ve been a bowler you can always use the outlook from an objective eye.

Even the pros have coaches and we league bowlers shouldn’t think of ourselves as above reproach. When other bowlers do ask for my insights, and I do wait for them to ask, the first thing I tell them is to be very careful from whom they take advice. Every bowler has different skills and not all bowlers are really familiar with the game and it’s idiosyncrasies though they may have been bowling for 20 years or more.

The lane conditions, ball weight, the weather and much more can effect the bowlers score. Proper drilling is essen-tial and we are not always privy to the capabilities of those who might have drilled our ball. I remember days long ago when people could actually get their ball drilled at Kmart! Yikes! I digress.

The point to this little rant, if you will, is to encourage you to seek professional help with your bowling if you wish to be more serious and improve your average. The rest who are simply out there to have a good time, more power to you, enjoy every minute. As I told one of my talented bowl-ers this week, “Relax. It really is only a game.”

Wesley Low Jr. Plays Dual-Shot ToughMcBride Goes Back-To-Back-To-Back

by David Yamauchi

SIMI VALLEY — The JAT headed north to Harley’s Simi Bowl for a “challenge” tournament with special lane conditions for the Open Division. Farm Club bowled on the house shot after the tough run on Bear the prior tournament while the Open Division bowled on a “dual-shot”- the left lane of each pair was Kegel Route 66 while the right lane was WTBA Sydney. The combination of the two patterns made for some tough bowling.

On the house side, the Farm Club lit them up with Eric Tor-rence leading the field at +98 followed closely by newcomer Taylor Berry at +73 and Mandy Arriola at +57. Vegas’ Terrance Rock II was 4th at +38. Low-to-qualify was Chris Thompson at -80.

In Match Play, Eric Torrance kept his lead by going 4-1 in match play and taking top-seed honors at +256. Ryan McBride kept his chances for the three-peat alive by going 4-1 including a 290 game to jump the field to the second-seed. Ralph Ramirez III continued his great bowling getting to +236 by going 4-1 while Anthony Schanen used a 279 start and a 258 finish to go 3-2 and take the last stepladder spot at +194.

In the stepladder, Ralph Ramirez III started strong and took down 4th seed Schanen 220-197 to advance to the semifinal. In that match, back-to-back champ Ryan McBride just kept on strik-ing to a 225-211 win and his third straight trip to the finals. In the Championship Match it was a back and forth battle but in the end it was Ryan McBride defeating top-seed Eric Torrence 213-209 for his third straight Farm Club title. Congratulations Ryan!

On the Open Division side, the lanes were doctored up with the dual shot and it made for some rough scoring on the fresh patterns. Open Division bowled a straight-11 match play format for the limited field. Only three 200 games in the first game as the bowlers adjusted to the patterns with Matthew Zweig, Patrick Rodriguez and Tyler Salverda posting plus scores to start. After 6 games at the half-way point, Wesley Low Jr. had a triple-digit pin lead but Jerome Jordan Jr. went 234-246-237 with 90 bonus to get within 35 pins of taking the lead, but fell to 4th after a 156-153 finish as the lanes burnt up. Joe Grondin was back in form posting games of 258-247-231 and finishing with a 237 and the win for a third place finish. Matthew Zweig continued his great bowling getting hot and staying consistent the entire day finish-ing 2nd at +237 helped by his 8-3 match play record. In the end it was the hot shot lefty Wesley Low Jr. averaging 204 to lead the field and cruising to a +320 total and a 83 pin win for his second title of the season. Congratulations Wesley!

The Perfect Gameby Steve Felege

memories by Carol Mancini

Editor’s Note: Years ago, an aging lane-warrior showed up on our doorstep begging us to let him write a coaching column for our legendary newspaper. I felt so sorry for him that I agreed to give him a shot. Now I can’t get rid of him! He’s living in our broom closet.............and he snores!

Steve: Uh......Carol. Bzzzzzz. bzzzzzz, bzzzzzz, bzzzzzz bzzz.Carol: Really?! Funny.....I don’t remember it that way. Hey, Lil-lian. Bzzzzz, bzzzzz, bzzzzz, bzzzzz, bzzz?Lillian: Un-huh. Yes, that’s true.Carol: Okay, I guess I’ll have to take your word for it.Editor’s note: Ahem! Apparently, just a little over a year ago I came across a newly published book that.........made me want to lace up my bowling shoes and get back out on the lanes?..... Really? I said that?Lillian: That’s what you told me!Editor’s note (cont’d): The book was so clear and concise that I called the author and eventually asked if he would consider writing a coaching column for our legendary newspaper?.........Seriously?Steve: Un-huh. Carol: Wow..... Editor’s note: And I can get rid of you?Steve: Sure! Just say the word and I’ll be back in PA watching the leaves fall.Carol: Hmmm.........Editors note: ...........but you are sleeping in our broom closet?Steve: Yes........and I do snore.Carol: All-righty then! Let’s get down to business. If there’s one thing I do remember clearly, it’s the first column. Steve: Good, because I don’t.Carol: You don’t remember passing out from jet lag and sleeping on the floor covered in old copies of The Bowling News?Steve: No, but I do remember waking up warm and dry for a change.Carol: Well, you fell asleep while I was trying to interview you. The first question I asked was, “What qualified you to write a book about bowling?” Steve: That’s still a really good question!Carol: Well?Steve: Look, Carol, I really don’t like talking about myself. Carol: Why not? You have a story to tell don’t you? Steve: Mark Twain said, “It’s better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you have nothing to say, rather than speak, and in so doing, prove them right.”Carol: Well......good for Mark, but I have a paper to fill and YOU are going to help me fill it!Steve: But..........Carol: I’ll buy you a cup of coffee!!!!!Steve: Done! See you next week!Carol: You are still the biggest push-over I’ve ever met.Steve: I hear that a lot. Comments or questions? Email them to us at: [email protected] our coach is full of hot air? Try to “stump” him. Email your questions to Steve at: [email protected]

DOWNEY — At the close of week six, the A.B.T.A. foursome is teetering on a 3 1/2 game lead over Team 23. They only need to win one game on Monday to be the first round winner of the season. Three weeks ago they were in third. Two weeks ago in second. Monday night they hit the boards at the top of the sheet and proceeded to sweep Team 21.

The A.B.T.A. guys had only one game under 200! Justin Ziegler 722, Mike Nakunz 646, Val Wise 663 and Bobby Campagnale 738. Steady and Ready!

This coming Monday will pit last years winner — Leon-ard Ruiz Jr. (plus his dangerous new team members) against A.B.T.A. All eyes will be on this match!

Week seven is the final week of round one and the playable house shot. (More about that next week.)

Juan Ellison, deskman at Cal Bowl, lit up the bowl with his smile after ball 12 cleared the deck. He kept assuring me that he had a 300 inside just “waitin’ to bust out.” I BELIEVED IN YOU!

Bobby Campagnale won a couple of pots with his 268. Kevin Valmonte was FINANCIALLY rewarded for 279. The other 279 belonged to Eddie VanDaniker, winner of the Game One pot. Paul Varela claimed the Game Three pot with a surprising 265.

Vernon Adams has the high average for 18 games of 244, followed by Kevin Gagnon 242, Ramon Torres 242.

COMMENT: “Looking back in old copies of the Bowl-ing News — 700’s made the front page and an 800 made banner headlines. What this league needs is a 900!!”

Nicole VanDaniker still leads the ladies averages — 209. Debbie Louise 202, Jessica Diso 197 and Samantha Jimenez 196. These gals can play! They could make a “TEAM OF THEIR OWN”. Think about that for next year.

What does all this average comparison show? 92 men are averaging 220 and 4 ladies are averaging 203. (Com-puters are sooo smart!)

Team 19, sitting in 11th place posted the high series of the night, winning 4 1/2 from SYSCO. Their 2852 was divided up: Rich Maldonado 655, Joe Jimenez 684, Jeff Carr 753 and Sam Hitchcock 760. Still 100 pins behind the season high of 2852 (by Team 19 no less). Guess they didn’t want to break their own record.

The “pattern” for round two (short oil-dry) is posted in plenty of time to drill up new weapons or wipe the cob webs off some old stuff. If you aren’t sure, ask someone that has bowled on it!

Come early Monday — take a number — get a good seat.
