PBA to Donate Go Bowling! PBA Tour and PBA50 Tour Player Fines to BVL

CHICAGO – The Professional Bowlers Association has announced that PBA will donate all proceeds from player fines from the Go Bowling! PBA Tour and PBA50 Tour to the Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL).

Founded in 1942, BVL grants provide arts and crafts programs, music and sports activities, reading materials, board games and much more to help boost spirits and im-prove morale to veterans while also speeding recuperation for those in VA Medical Centers, Vet Centers and State Veterans Homes.

BVL also assists recuperating veterans, veterans suffer-ing from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and ag-ing veterans by giving them an outlet for the joy, freedom, and friendship that recreation and sport can bring. Since its inception BVL has raised almost $50 million dollars for America’s active duty service members and veterans.

“The genesis of this new annual charitable donation came from conversations with the PBA Player Commit-tee,” said PBA Commissioner Tom Clark. "Fines happen. No player wants to be fined, but from now on everyone will know that money goes directly to support the BVL."

“We’re very happy that the PBA and PBA Players Committee thought of us for this kind gesture,” said John LaSpina, BVL Board of Directors Chair. The BVL is very appreciative of PBA’s generosity to our efforts because nothing can be greater than supporting the men and wom-en who serve our country.”

PBA incorporates a policy of levying fines for various rules violations. Players can be fined for a number of rules infractions which range from an improperly filled out re-cap sheet to unsportsmanlike conduct. PBA will donate funds beginning with those collected during the 2018 sea-son.

PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia, a 14-time PBA Tour and eight-time PBA50 Tour champion, is a spokes-person for BVL and often visits VA hospitals throughout the country. After having already started his professional bowling career, Petraglia was called to duty and served in the Army during the Vietnam War from 1967-68.

Name One Thing About Bowling You Assume No One Else Knows

by Carol Mancini

Jack McQuaide – “A” Mechanic for Del Rio Lanes – “If the foul light isn’t working the two competing teams must appoint someone to watch the foul line”

Reggie Robins – “A” Mechanic for Keystone Lanes – “Lane patters are global. Lane patterns can be brought up on the computer and programmed into the latest lane machines. The overall lane dimensions have not changed since first established nor the size of the balls!”

Mystery Mechanic – Didn’t want name given – “99% of league bowers don’t know a thing about lanes, lane con-dition, balls, rules or how to bowl. They just blame their bad games on the lanes! They save time by not practicing, buying new equipment or learning the game. I said it… and I’m glad!”

haps the first sign of bowling’s resurgence on TV came when ESPN started showing the PBA League on the weekends starting with the league’s inaugural season in 2014.

ESPN has tried to put plenty of dazzle into the show, but frankly, watching five mid-dle-aged men facing five middle-aged men – albeit many of them stars – makes for dull entertainment. Even today, ESPN hasn’t learned that keeping out women, except for brief appearances, doesn’t inspire viewership of the PBA League.

But at least bowling got exposure on a popular cable network and the exposure con-tinues to grow.

Now, CBS Sports has been showing plenty of bowling events, including pro tourna-ments and college and youth championships. Many girls and women are being thrust into the TV spotlight and – like professional tennis – bowling fans are finding that men sometimes can’t match the excitement that women drum up.

Nowhere was this more evident than when the CBS Sports Network, a cable channel that reaches 70 million homes, showed the stepladder finals of the QubicaAMF Profes-sional Women’s Bowling Assn. Players Championship in Plano, Tex., last month.

The heart-tugging championship match between Stefanie Johnson and Kelly Kulick was dripping with emotion as the two took turns fighting for the lead. This was the kind of hotly contested battle that brings in viewers and will keep them. No wonder, CBS Sports devoted two full hours to the event.

Johnson was visibly plagued by nerves in the finals, particularly in the early going. She badly lobbed two off-kilter shots in the first and third frames, but both turned into Brooklyn strikes. That helped her register four straight strikes to start the match.

Even though Johnson was the top seed, she was a definite underdog to the more-cele-brated Kulick, who had outclassed her two previous opponents in climbing the stepladder with victories of 224-206 over Danielle McEwan and 244-171 over Jordan Richard.

But those Brooklyn strikes portended a historic day for the 34-year-old right-handed Johnson.

The spectators at Plano Super Bowl were well aware that Johnson not only had to sur-vive the laser-focused Kulick, but she had to overcome personal emotions.

Johnson came into the finals without having won a major championship. Furthermore, she was bowling on her home lanes and in front of her family, children and friends. Ad-ditionally, Johnson works at Plano Super Bowl. Even one of the show’s announcers, Shannon O'Keefe, is a close friend.

With all this as a backdrop, could Johnson possibly disappoint? TV viewers no doubt got caught up in all these side issues and had to foresee an outpouring of emotion from Johnson in case she prevailed.

The match went back and forth, but Johnson seized command when Kulick left the 7-10 split in the ninth frame. But Kulick has a heart of a champion – and competitiveness to match – and doubled in the 10th frame, forcing Johnson to mark in the 10th to win the match.

The anxiety was etched on Johnson’s face as she made her approach on her first shot in the 10th with the game on the line.

When Johnson gamely delivered a straight-and-true strike, she squatted down, her head in her arms, tears flowing.

This was great theater, true-to-life emotion, a real heart-tugger. TV viewers had to be delighted.

With her 230-200 vic-tory and the $20,000 top prize in hand, Johnson was asked afterward who she wanted to thank. Of course, her family topped her lengthy list.

“I couldn’t do this without my family,” she said, all choked up. “Thank you so much.” And thank you to CBS Sports for providing some wonderful bowling coverage.

Who knows? We may be in the midst of Part 2 of TV’s Golden Age of Bowling.

Golden Age for TV Bowling continued from page 1

When will bowlers learn?

One can never remind players enough about bowling etiquette. This may be an appropriate time for that reminder because many new bowlers are just now starting their lengthy nine-month fall seasons.

As for those veteran bowlers who should know better . . . well, it doesn’t hurt to hear this lecture again.

Remember, you’re not bowling in a vacuum. There are bowlers all around you. If you forget everything else, just remember this: Be considerate.

Do you have a pet peeve about etiquette and courtesy when you bowl?

I have one.

When I release the ball at the foul line, oftentimes a bowler on an adjoining lane will thunder to my side and rifle his or her ball while I’m still tracking my shot and anticipating my upcoming pin action (or lack thereof).

It’s easy to get startled by such an ill-mannered bowler . . . and annoyed. Why can’t that bowler just wait a few seconds and allow me to watch my electrifying shot (thinking positively) before I triumphantly return to my seat?

The fact is that rudeness often prevails in a bowling house. It’s rarely intentional, but it can produce a heart-stopping – and irritating – moment or two.

On the same topic, perfectbowling.com, a nifty website that provides bowling tips, advice and other interesting data, came up with its list of nine bowling rules for etiquette and courtesy.

So here goes – the etiquette rules from perfectbowling.com:

1 – The first rule in bowling is to never bother another bowler while they are in the process of bowling.

2 – Bowlers on the right-hand lane have the right-of-way to bowl first.

3 – Never pick up your ball from the return rack while another bowler is preparing to bowl and is in his/her starting position.

Fred Eisenhammer: Also, don’t start cleaning your ball while climbing onto a lane next to another bowler getting ready to bowl. It can be extremely distracting. In other words, don’t be so eager to take your shot. The pins will still be standing!

4 – Refrain from using obsxacenities or vulgar gestures.

5 – After your shot, let others bowl.

Fred Eisenhammer: In other words, don’t linger on the lane after your shot.

6 – Wear proper shoes.

7 – Keep food and other refreshments off the approach.

8 – Remember, there are others waiting to bowl.

Fred Eisenhammer: In other words, don’t wander off aimlessly . . . or socialize too long when your turn is about to arrive.

9 – Above all else, have fun.

I’ll add Rule No. 10 to the list:

10 – Let the bowler next to you complete his or her turn and walk back to his or her seat before you start your approach.

Of course, it’s inevitable that some bowlers will slip up from time to time, so it’s important not to get flustered if someone violates one of these rules.

No slamming your bowling ball on the lane in disgust. Distractions happen – even when pros are bowling.

Remember, it’s just a game. So, enjoy it. And be a good citizen and let others enjoy it as well!

CHICAGO – The Professional Bowlers Association has announced its 2019 schedule of Go Bowling! PBA Tour events airing on FOX Sports will be open exclusively to PBA members.

The exception to the policy will be the United States Bowling Congress Masters, an event that traditionally has included USBC members who may or may not be PBA mem-bers.

Tournaments included in the members only policy include: the PBA Hall of Fame Classic in Arlington, Texas; Oklahoma Open and Mark Roth-Marshall Holman PBA Doubles Championship in Shawnee, Okla.; Lubbock Sports Open in Lubbock, Texas; PBA Tournament of Champions in Fairlawn, Ohio; PBA Players Championship in Co-lumbus, Ohio; Indianapolis Open in Indianapolis; Jonesboro Open in Jonesboro, Ark.; PBA World Series of Bowling X in Allen Park, Mich., the PBA League in Portland, Maine, and any Pre-Tournament Qualifier (PTQ) held in conjunction with these events.

The PBA will continue to welcome non-members in its Regional Tour, PBA Xtra Frame Tour on FloBowling and PBA50 Tour events. Non-members are allowed to bowl in these events until they cash twice in any given year, at which time they are required to join in order to continue participation in PBA events.

“The return to members-only status for PBA Tour competition is a return to the rules that applied to PBA competition for most of the organization’s 60-year history,” said PBA Deputy Commissioner Kirk von Krueger in announcing the policy. “It’s a privilege to be able to compete with and against the best bowlers in the world, not a right. Restoring the original policy is simply a matter of restoring one of the building blocks of the PBA.”

PBA membership includes a variety of benefits including reduced tournament entry fees, discounts on equipment from PBA Product Registered companies, reduced or no-cost lineage fees to practice at participating bowling centers, and other perks.

To join the PBA, visit pba.com and click on the “join” link (https://www.pba.com/join). Competitive membership in the PBA is open to any bowler who has maintained a 200 or higher average for a minimum of 36 games in any USBC-certified league or tour-nament club within the previous (190 for Sport leagues) 12 months, or who has cashed in PBA tournament of any kind within the last two years.

MERCED DOMINO'S WINS SCRATCH TRIO LEAGUE AND CASHMERCED – Bellevue Bowl's Monday scratch trio league had a new winner

this year in Domino's Pizza of Merced taking the championship and the first place purse of $1,005, or a bowler's share of $335 each. The trio members were Bill King, Bruno Holte, and Adam Barden. Team four with Joe Troncoso, Tyler Davis, and Joe McBride took second for $690 for $230 each. Coming in third place was Bellevue Bowl's Pro-Shop with members John Krone, Dave Cline, and Sean McCulloch for $570 or $190 each.

Season high scratch scores in the men's were Erni Pinheiro with a 267, Adam Barden with a series of 708. The women's had Christina Whitcomb taking both title with a 197 scratch game and a 506 scratch series.

You have to remember that the league bowled on the PBA lane pattern that changed every week. The patterns went from heavy oil to light oil and every-thing in between, a tough shot every week in their 14 week season. According to Keith Docherty, secretary/treasurer of the league a total of $4,410 was handed out the last night of bowling. The league is growing bigger and better every year. It is open to men and women bowlers.

SENIOR WINTER LEAGUE NEEDS A FEW BOWLERS The Tuesday Senior Winter League at Bellevue is looking for a few more

bowlers to fill the league and a few teams that need bowlers. Last year the league had the 50/50 raffle going during the league play and shared $664 in the prize fun at the end of the season, not bad huh. They bowl at 1 p.m. and your USBC card this year is the same last year $25. League fees are the same as last year, $13 a week. Hope to see you on Tuesday, it's a fun league.

BLACK OAK LANES NO-TAPSJeff Hurley, senior no-tap director told me that he wanted Bellevue Bowl

bowlers to know that the Sept. no-tap is set for Friday, the 7th at 1:30 p.m. There is a change in October due to Black Oak Lanes hosting their 13th Annual Battle at Black Oak Lanes PBA regional from the fifth to the seventh. Remember, you have to pre-pay to roll up on the hill. His number is 209-928-9437. Call him today.

CENTRAL VALLEY SENIORS ROLL AT MCHENRY BOWL NEXT SATThe Central Valley Senior Bowling Club is hosting their monthly event on

Sept. 15 at 1 p.m. at McHenry Bowl in Modesto. Entry fee for the singles tour-nament is $40. If you want to join the club, the age requirements are 50 and older for women and 55 years and older for a man. You roll four games across eight lanes to qualify and the top three qualifiers will enter a step-ladder roll-off (2 vs 3) with the winner rolling against the number one seed to determine the tournament champion. The winner receives a championship plaque courtesy of Delta-Sierra Beverage of Modesto. The tournaments are held on the third Satur-day of the month, singles or doubles. You can join the club for $20. If you need more information, contact Dave Brown at 209-549-2510.

WHEN STRUCTURE MEETS SUCCESSKatelyn Abigania, an 11-year-old started bowling in 2013, and it

quickly became evident that what started as a family outing was going to be much more. By way of youth programs at multiple centers in the San Diego region, Katelyn has spent the last five years training with and learning from great local and national bowling minds. This past summer, all of her hard work has come to fruition.

In July of 2018, 3,832 participants competed at USBC’s Junior Gold Championships in Dallas, TX. Bowlers from seven countries competed in three divisions of tournament play, culminating in televised showcases of the best up-and-coming bowling talent.

Abigania competed in stepladder format against Saphyre Nofuente of Rocklin, CA and 2017 Champion Karina Capron from Fremont, NE, both 12, for the title of Champion. Katelyn and Karina had also battled it

out in match play, resulting in a 385-315 final score, a victory for Capron, and the final seed in the cham-pionship round for Abigania.

After defeating Nofuente, Abigania struck in four of six opening frames against a struggling Capron, who left splits in both the second and fourth frames. Abigania held onto a 38-pin lead going into the final frames of competition after both bowlers failed to convert spares in the seventh. Needing only seven pins in the tenth frame to close out Capron, Katelyn struck three times, capturing her first Junior Gold title on television.

On winning the championship, Abigania stated “I’m very speechless and emotional, because it’s a big thing.” As she continued to soak in the victory she humbly explained “"I'm trying to keep my tears in, but I feel really happy for myself. I want to thank my family and my coach and my friends for getting me where I am right now.”

INSPIRATION/ ASPIRATION The only daughter of Jonathan and Cheralyn Abigania is the middle of three children, Katelyn has an

older brother, Joshua 13 years old, who also competed in Junior Gold, as well as a younger brother Jon 6 years old, who already shows signs of following in the footsteps of his siblings. Katelyn also has an ever-growing shelf of awards, having also won first place in the U12 division of the California Pepsi Youth Championships this past May.

Her dedication to the sport of bowling has been inspired by the dedication shown by her father Jona-than during his time serving over 20 years in the United States Marine Corps. Her aspirations for the future - to become a lawyer, a professional bowler in the PWBA, and to compete for Team USA, are indicative of great motivation at an early age, support for her country, and a dedication to the sport she has grown to love.

Katelyn gives special thanks to Mira Mesa Lanes, Admiral Robinson, Sea & Air Lanes, her friends and family for their love and support, as well as her longtime coach Barry Brown that have worked tirelessly to help her improve. She is the first and youngest San Diegan to capture a Junior Gold Championship, and her future is looking brighter than ever.

BOWLING IN VEGAS ?MOVING TO VEGAS ?

BOWLING SUPPLY

Despite producing several world-class champions over the past few decades, Austra-lian bowlers have never been top-of-mind sport in their home country until Jason Bel-monte began to gather trophies around the world. Even after raising to his stature as argu-ably the world’s best bowler, it has taken the non-stop promotional efforts by “Belmo” himself, a hands-on effort led by Australia’s Lynne Clay and the PBA’s constant coverage of Belmonte’s accomplishments to get key media doors opened.

After winning PBA Player of the Year honors in four of the past five years, becoming the fastest “millionaire” in PBA history, collecting nine major championships (among his 18 PBA Tour titles) and other unprecedented feats, the sport’s most popular (and/or most disliked) personality – depending on your viewpoint regarding his two-handed technique – has seen his “star” rise in his homeland.

Earlier this year, the Australia Broadcast Corporation – the country’s version of Amer-ica’s ABC-TV – profiled Belmonte’s life and bowling career in a six-and-a-half minute segment on its popular prime time “7:30” magazine-style program (http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/meet-the-world%E2%80%99s-number-one-tenpin-bowler,/9847034).

In July, “Inside Sport,” Australia’s version of “Sports Illustrated,” published an eight-page tribute to Belmonte (https://www.pba.com/content/files/downloads/INSIDE_SPORT_magazine_July_2018.pdf) under the headline, “That’s How He Rolls.”

And because Belmonte early-on embraced social media and its global platforms, he has cultivated a world-wide fan base. Most recently, working with the wildly popular “Dude Perfect” YouTube channel for the second time in four years, Belmonte helped orchestrate a series of outrageous “trick shots” that recorded more than 10 million views in the first 24 hours (www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSB9JvsBT4M).

Editor’s Note: Dude Perfect is a group of former basketball players and Texas A&M University roommates who created what has become the second-largest YouTube channel in the world. The group teamed up with Belmonte in 2014 to create “Bowling Trick Shots 1,” which has since notched nearly 90 million views, many of them among the highly-coveted youth market.

Among the trick shots on the first episode was a “two-handed, 250-yard strike.” When he was approached to do a second version, Belmonte said, “After the success of the first video, I knew we had to up the ante. And after three days of shooting, I told the boys, I’m not sure how we did it, but we just made a better video…”

Watch both YouTube videos, and you be the judge.

Congratulations to all of the winners listed above and remember that “CALIFORNIA BOWLERS ARE THE BEST IN THE WORLD”

for 32 years and is responsible for teaching hundreds of bowlers the basics of our sport. She was rewarded for her dedication and hard work last year when she was selected California Coach of The Year. Lee will be missed by the youngsters she coaches and has coached.

Over the decades Lee has taken hundreds of bowlers to the California State Women’s Tournament. She has com-peted in 38 such tournaments herself and taken multiple teams to those tournaments with her. Lee’s ladies will miss her.

Lee has been bowling for 61 years. She has bowled in hundreds of leagues with thousands of teammates. There have thrills, records, championships, millions of laughs and memories galore. Lee’s many teammates will miss her.

Not many bowlers have served as a league secretary for four decades or more. Lee Fitzgerald is one of those who have. Being a league secretary is time consuming, stress-ful and usually a thankless job. Especially in the days be the days before computers. The bowlers who Lee has “secretaried” for will miss her.

It is my pleasure and honor to thank Lee Fitzgerald fall all she has done for our sport. Lee, I will miss you.

Lee is grateful for all that Bowling has done for her. She is thankful for all those who have been instrumental in her bowling career:

Thanks for her parents support, they allowed her to bowl as much as she wanted and in as many tournaments as she wanted.

Thanks to her coach, Rusty, for growing her passion for bowling.

Thanks to BOBBY LYONS for his coaching assistance for over a decade.

Finally, special thanks to her family, husband JOHN and sons WILLIAM and MICHAEL for their uncondi-tional love and support.
