Year 12 Creative Arts and TAS Evening

iDesign 2015 A few weeks ago we presented Max McKay with the First prize of a Lenovo Yogo Pro laptop for his 2015 iDesign entry. Mr Geoff Quattromani recently published the following article regarding the work completed by our students.

Another year, another amazing competition. For 2015 I sought sponsorship from companies such as Samsung, Intel and Lenovo and was extremely pleased to have a Lenovo Yoga Pro to hand out for First prize. An extremely generous prize for which I am forever grateful.

The challenge to the students is completely open. Any student, any idea — create something incorporating technology and enter it.

I was amazed to hear that James Hall, who created a highly addictive computer game, wasn’t even studying an IT subject at the school. He heard about the competition and figured out how to develop a computer game. I was absolutely shocked by his amazing effort and basically begged him to do two things; focus on IT as an elective in school AND move this game into the Google Play and Apple App Store. It was the next Angry Birds, a great time killer. I awarded James 3rd place.

Anthony Vella, our winner from last year produced a fantastic 3D game where you had to navigate a maze. This year it was actually similar in a sense however the detail and effort was miles ahead. Shadows, leaves, wind, and other detailed visuals were incorporated this year. He also managed to make a section of the school and recreate it in a virtual world, something that made my jaw drop. This is a 16 year old student doing things that game developers are paid large salaries to do. I was highly impressed by this effort, especially the im-provement and made a tough call for second place.

The student whom I awarded 1st place to was one of the top 3 last year. This year Max McKay produced a physical product. What struck me was when the student told me the problem he wanted to solve. A friend of his has a gaming laptop which gets rather hot. So to solve this he thought about raising it off the desk and providing cooling to the laptop. The solution would be a USB powered laptop stand with cooling. Now with that meant the combination of multiple subjects, lessons he learnt in Graphics, Design, Technology and elec-tronics would all come into play. The stand was made of perspex sides and steel rods holding it all together. The wiring was all done, the connection for the USB port was 3D printed and completed by the Max. It was great to look at the various prototypes along the way too, the things that didn’t work and how he made modifi-cations to solve this problem. At the end of the day, he had a viable product that in reality could be sold to other gamers who had similar issues.

This is what great innovators do. This is why I started this program. Take the student away from the struc-tured, rigid learning framework and provide an open field, what has been achieved is beyond my expectations.

I would like to truly thank Lenovo for their contribution towards this program. It created a great incentive for the students to enter the competition and will be a fantastic resource to the winning student. A huge thank you also to Mr Merlino and Bede Polding College for supporting this project and the students involved. Thank you for allowing this to happen!
