1. PURPOSE

The purpose of this calculation is to verify the cable size selected considering load

current, steady state voltage drop limitation, short circuit current and motor starting

voltage drop limitation for THE SOUTH PARS FIELD DEVELOPMENT PHASES 4&5

ONSHORE FACILITIES PROJECT at ASSALUYEN, IRAN.

3. GENERAL ELECTRICAL DATA

3.1 Electrical system voltages

33kV, 50 Hz, 3 phase, neutral earthed by zig-zag transformer

11kV, 50 Hz, 3 phase, neutral resistance earthed

6kV, 50 Hz, 3 phase, neutral resistance earthed

400V, 50 Hz, 3 phase, solidly earthed

230V, 50 Hz, 1 phase, solidly earthed (lighting system)

230V, 50 Hz, 1 phase, isolated from earth (UPS system)

48 VDC, unearthed

3.4 Cables in parallel

Where two or more cables are connected in parallel in the same phase or pole of the

system, measures shall be taken to ensure that the load current is shared equally

between them.

3.5 Cable type

3.5.1 Insulation for power cables shall be:

Cross-linked polyethylene(XLPE) or ethylene propylene rubber(EPR) for HV and LV

cables

3.5.2 Armour

Armour shall mechanically protect the cable and shall be made up of double galvanised

steel tape or steel wire armour. Non magnetic armour shall be used for single core

cables.

3.5.3 Conductor

Conductor shall be stranded. Conductor shall be class 2 for cables for fixed

installations and class 5 for flexible cables feeding mobile equipment.

Cable cores shall be in copper.

3.5.4 Oversheath

Oversheath of cables shall be PVC.

All cables shall be aliphatic hydrocarbon, sunlight resistant, flame retardant and low

density of smoke according to IEC 332 and IEC 1034.

Circuits for safety requirements shall be compulsorily fire resistant. Fire resisting

cables shall withstand to a 1000℃ temperature during 30 minutes (with test

procedure requirement of the IEC 331) and shall continue to conduct electric power

during this period.

4. BASIS OF CALCULATION

4.1 Basis

A cable selection shall be carried out with respect to the most stringent of the following

criteria.

Admissible steady state cable insulation thermal withstand

Admissible voltage drop (steady state, motor start)

Admissible overcurrent in cable (short-circuit, overload)

4.2 Reference admissible current carrying capacities

For XLPE or EPR core insulation, maximum core temperature is 90℃ and the current

carrying capacities are the following :

4.2.1 LV cables current carrying capacities

(Refer attachment #1)

4.2.2 HV(6kV, 11kV and 33kV) cables current carrying capacities

(Refer attachment #2)

4.3 Admissible current carrying capacities

4.3.1 Rating factor for ambient temperature

Ambient air temperature for SOUTH PARS 4&5 project is 48℃.

KAT = 0.84 interpolated between 45℃ and 50℃.(Refer attachment #3)

Ambient ground temperature for SOUTH PARS 4&5 project is 25℃.

KGT = 0.96 (Refer attachment #4)

4.3.2 Rating factor for Soil thermal resistivity .(Refer attachment #5)

On the basis of IEC-287 9.6.1 the site conditions of soil thermal resistivity is applied as

2.5 K.m/W

For 6kV,11kV and 33kV cables : KSH = 0.70

For 0.4kV cables :

Admissible ampacities are given for 2.5 K.m/W in para. 4.2.1. The cables shall then

be overrated by : KSL = 1.0

4.3.3 Group rating factor (Influence between cables)

For cables installed in free air :

- HV cables (6kV,11kV and 33kV)

Table 52-E4 of IEC 364-5-523, installation method L – 3 ladders with

vertical spacing between ladder of 300 mm - over 9 touching cables in

single layer formation on each cable ladder. (Attachment #6)

KHA = 0.70

- LV cables (0.4kV)

For buried cables :

- HV cables (6kV,11kV and 33kV) :

4.3.4 Depth of laying

Minimum depth of laying of cable is 0.9m.

The derating factor for different burial depths are ignored.

4.3.5 Overall admissible ampacity correction factors

4.3.5.1 HV cables (6kV, 11kV and 33kV)

For HV motors & power feeders installed on cable ladder

- K = KAT x KHA = 0.84 x 0.70 = 0.588

For HV motors & power feeders installed underground

- K = KGT x KSH x KHB = 0.96 x 0.70 x 0.62 = 0.417

4.3.5.2 LV cables (0.4kV)

For LV motors & power feeders installed on cable ladder

- K = KAT x KLA = 0.84 x 0.7 = 0.588

For LV motors, power feeders & street lightings installed underground

- K = KGT x KSL x KLB = 0.96 x 1.0 x 0.55 = 0.528

4.4 Admissible voltage drop

4.4.1 Voltage drop calculation formula

The voltage drop is calculated from the following formula;

- Single-phase voltage drop : Vdrop = 2 × L × I (Ra cosθ + X sinθ )

- Three-phase voltage drop : Vdrop = 3 × L × I (Ra cosθ + X sinθ )

- Motor start voltage drop : Vdrop = 3 × L × ILRC (Ra cosθ LRC+ X sinθ LRC)

where L = feeder length in km

Rc = conductor resistance of cable in D.C. at 90℃(ohm/km)

Ra = conductor resistance of cable in A.C. at 90℃(ohm/km)

X = core inductance (ohm/km)

4.4.2 Voltage drop limitation considered are as follows.

Feeder Voltage Drop

From main switchboards to consumers during normaloperation 5 %

Motor cables at full load 5 %

Motor cables from switchgears to motor terminal duringstarting 15 %

Lighting and small power cables (including AC, DC UPScircuits) between secondary panel and the furthest lightingfixture/small load.

- When secondary panel is located in unit 3 %

- When secondary panel is located near the maindistribution panel in substation 5 %

AC, DC Uninterruptible power supplies main power cablesbetween batteries and main equipment cubicles 1 %

4.5 Short-circuit current

The minimum conductor size for short circuit current is calculated as follows as

per clause 434-03-03 of IEE WIRING REGULATION 16th edition 1991.

I = The value of short circuit current in amperes, expressed for a.c. as the

r.m.s value.

k = 143 for HV cables insulated with XLPE

t = duration of short circuit (sec)

0.25 sec (12.5 cycle) for HV circuits

Note 1. 0.25 sec (12.5 cycle) for HV circuit is based on the following

fault clearing time.

Breaker : 5 cycle (0.1 sec)

Instantaneous relay : 1 cycle (0.02 sec)

Safety margin : 6.5 cycle (0.13 sec)

Note 2. 0.1 sec (5 cycle) for fused contactor circuit of HV motor feeder.

Note 3. For the cables routed in classified hazardous area, it shall be

ensured that surface temperature of cables does not exceed

the given temperature class of the hazardous area (T3=200

deg.C) during overcurrent or short circuit fault conditions. This

may be ensured by close consult with cable manufacturer

verifying the temperature propagation speed from the copper

conductor to the outer surface of cables via insulation, armour

and outer sheath in terms of fault clearing time by protective

devices such as fuses or relays.
