ANNOUNCEMENTS

8 SEPTEMBER 2019 3 TWENTY-THIRD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

The Musings of Our Pastor

Adios, O "Seasonal Friend"! We do eagerly await your return, in due time! How quickly we have arrived at the point in our calendar year, when we are preparing to say "goodbye" to the wonderful Sum-mer Season, and rolling out the red carpet for the new season of Au-tumn. Back in July, I was having a light-hearted conversation with Fr. Stephen Ojapah, MSP, whose home is Nigeria, Africa. He was here to present our annual mission appeal in conjunction with the Office of the Propagation of Faith. Fr. Stephen remarked that in Africa they do not have Winter, but they have only 2 basic seasons. The rainy sea-son and the dry season. While the Winter Season can sometimes be a real hassle because of the snow and ice, the brutally cold winds and temperatures, as well as the periods of confinement indoors and the reduced amounts of daylight, I personally do cherish the unique-ness and beauty of each of our 4 seasons. Within the spiritual life, we may experience or move through a variety of seasons as well. At some junctures in life, we may feel so marvelously alive in Christ through faith, and there may actually be some amazing signs of new life, new spiritual fervor, and new growth budding forth from within us, much like the world of nature coming alive in spectacular ways during Springtime. Not unlike Summer Season with its fundamental chores of keeping those pesky weeds in check, or keeping things properly watered and fertilized, or uprooting and transplanting things into a more favorable environment, there are often extended periods (seasons) in the spiritual life, which require us to take up similar important chores, in order that our relationship with the Lord God may grow or flourish to the best extent possible. The Season of Autumn, in the world of nature and in agricultural commu-nities is about reaping, gathering in, and finding blessings in the fruits of the fields, the harvest of good things. One's hard work, one's in-vestments, one's sacrifices bring forth some tangible, profitable, worthwhile dividends. Praise God! What a joy it is to look back over some particular phases or seasons of one's spiritual life and discover that the good fruits of Christian virtue and Christian discipleship, or the good fruits of a deep devotion to God have emerged from the ground of your life, even when the conditions of your life have been parched, stormy, or laden with crosses. In the months of the Winter Season, things may seem pretty bleak and lifeless. The elements in the world of nature around us can be, at times, downright bru-tal! Needless to say, the spiritual life may usher in some seasons that have the same kind of feeling or the same difficult realities as the Winter Season, which we may also dread in a big way! Through God's providential care and through the workings of his grace, how-ever, out of this bleakness or these difficulties may come the splen-dor of new life. Who would have thought that to be possible? As we work through the seasons of the calendar year, as well as the seasons of the spiritual life, our faith beckons us to be ever-attentive to the presence of God and to the workings of his grace, so that we might grow to maturity as his beloved sons and daugh-ters. At the same time, this "attentiveness" may evoke from us sin-cere praise and thanksgiving for a variety of blessings that come our way through God's loving support. God bless you, have a good week. —Fr. Ken
