ANNOUNCEMENTS
1 SEPTEMBER 2019 3 TWENTY -SECOND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME
The Musings of Our Pastor
One of the powerful "currents" running through my life, which is a catalyst for personal growth, fulfillment and ongoing inner joy is the "current" of humble service. Quite honestly, after a lifetime of priestly ministry one can only imag-ine what people might remember about my presence and activity with or amongst them as a Missionary of the Precious Blood. On this Labor Day Weekend, though, the greatest legacy I would hope to leave behind would be a legacy of humble service, whereby the whole gamut of my professional and personal work might be animated by the spirit of Christ, who was ready or dis-posed to do so many things, first and foremost, for the greater good of others. Work fittingly characterized by humble service was, I believe, something nurtured within the context of my own family life, especially when Mom would summon one of us kids to the back yard or down into the basement to help her hang up the laundry on any given Monday morning. Those "detested" chores of doing the dishes, pulling weeds in the garden, or cleaning up the house helped the good habit of humble service to take root within me as a young-ster. In much the same way, work characterized by humble service was ex-pected of all the students like myself, who were attending Brunnerdale High School Seminary. Practical and spiritual formation for the priesthood or broth-erhood as future Missionaries of the Precious Blood would just not be sufficient or complete without fundamental training in work characterized by humble ser-vice. While at I.C. Parish in Celina (2010-2017), above and beyond my priestly responsibilities, I labored in humble service to cook up supper about 3 eve-nings each week for my colleagues in ministry at the parish. As a newly or-dained priest in Cleveland, OH, I spent a good portion time one summer work-ing in humble service to create some floor to ceiling murals of Winnie the Pooh and other such characters, which brightened up the walls outside of the Kinder-garten Classroom, and brought smiles to many children over the years. While serving as Pastor of St. Augustine Parish in Rensselaer, I was severely repri-manded by an older member of the parish because he "caught" me engaged in the humble service of scrubbing the church floors to assist the janitor, who was overwhelmed with the work required of him in taking care of the parish grade school, the church and the parish grounds. At the Most Precious Blood Parish in Fort Wayne, we had some wonderful wooden stairway ledges, which were badly gouged and marred with pencils or pens by the students over the course of many years. One summer's project involving great portions of humble ser-vice was to sand those ledges down and give them a new luster or radiance once again. While serving as Pastor at St. Anthony, St. Peter and St. Joseph Parishes (Fort Recovery), one avenue of humble service that I embraced was helping the women of St. Anthony Parish to bag "tons" of candy for their big fundraising activity. Within my professional life as a priest and within my personal life, there are many things I "choose" to do, without obligation or fanfare, without financial dividends or pats on the back, because I truly desire for much of my work to be animated by or to be expressive of humble service, much like the ministry of Jesus Himself. Such works of humble service have become important avenues of personal growth, fulfillment and much ongoing inner joy for me over the years. I would be flattered, if people remember me mostly for a legacy of humble service directed toward the greater good of others. Having said that, I can give lots of praise and thanksgiving to God this Labor Day Weekend, especially for the meaningful work that has given purpose to my life! Would this be true of yourself as well? God bless you. —Fr. Ken
