Buzzin’ in the Hive Dear Graden Families: As we settle into October, we are thrilled to share that we have had a terrific start to the beginning of the school year. I look forward to the remarkable changes we will see this year as our students learn and grow together. Friday, October 12, marks the end of the first quarter. We have had many successful events both in the classrooms and as a community. I encourage you to take time with your child to reflect on the growth and numerous accomplishments he/she has gained during this time. Celebrations are very important in the learning process. Equally important is developing an action plan to turn opportunities for improvement into strengths. We recognized 800+ grandparents during National Grandparents Week in September. Our grandparents enjoyed eating lunch in the cafeteria, participating in recess games/utilizing the walking trail and visiting the classrooms to partake in a learning activity. We have over 300 students participating in building leadership roles from cafeteria to bus to office to greeters……, we have leadership occurring in every aspect of our building. Our Student Lighthouse participated in the Park Hill South parade on behalf of Graden Elementary. Finally, we recognized 30 hornets at our Habits Luncheon, and 26 hornets who earned recognition through our Sonic Spotting Being a Leader, and four students in 5 th grade were recognized as First-Rate Leaders. This year, we are recognizing and celebrating with monthly V.I.P. assemblies. Our first assembly was a blast! We had student speaker leaders, student talent and student VIPs. Finally, we ended the month with our annual PTA Carnival. What a wonderful job our PTA did organizing this event for the Graden community. The weather was perfect, the event was well organized and most importantly, Happy Hornets buzzing everywhere! WOW! We have been very busy at 9 and 45 during first quarter. From the Principal... OCTOBER 2018 Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for October 24th and 25th. This time affords us a wonderful formal opportunity to work as “team members” to collaborate and exchange information about how your child is doing at school. Even though there is only one formal Parent Teacher Conference scheduled, do not hesitate to contact us throughout the year with any questions or concerns you have about your child. We always have time for that! If you have not scheduled a conference, please call your child’s teacher directly at your convenience to schedule a time. Our goal is to meet with 100% of our families. If we don’t hear from you, we will be giving you a call. We have many fun events scheduled for October. Our Halloween parties are scheduled for Wednesday, October 31st. Please see party guidelines on the following page. Parent/Teacher Conferences, the Book Fair and the fifth grade musical, along with a McTeacher Night round out the events for October. Remember there will be no school on Friday, October 12 and October 25 and 26. Additionally, our first early release of the year is scheduled for Thursday, October 4; dismissal for students will be 1:30 pm. In closing, I want to extend a statement of thanks for the many ways our families enhance the quality of education at Graden Elementary. It’s a GREAT DAY to be a HORNET! Halloween Parties & School Safety

Graden Elementary classroom Halloween parties will be Wednesday, October 31. There will be a short parade through the school beginning at 2:15 pm. The parties will begin at the conclusion of the parade.

    Here’s the plan:

2:00 pm – Parents may begin setting up for parties 2:15 pm – Parade begins for grades K – 1st, grades 2nd-5th will line up in the hall to watch the parade

2:30 pm – Room parties begin 3:10 pm – Clean up

    3:15 pm – Parties conclude

Many of our children enjoy wearing costumes during party activities although that is an optional thing for them to do. We traditionally have lots of parents who come to help make this an enjoyable afternoon for everyone. We have the following guidelines for student costuming:

    • Weapons, pretend weapons, blood and gore ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. • Costumes should be ones that students can put on themselves and should not be worn to school.

We ask that students not wear their masks while waiting at bus stops, etc. as masks limit peripheral vision.

There will be sign-in tables at the front entrance outside the office when you arrive. Additionally, you will be able to sign your children out on a sheet that will be available in each classroom. We want this to be an enjoyable day for everyone while not compromising the safety of our students. Hope to see you at the Halloween party!

    Spotting Great Leaders at Graden

Reinforcing personal development and leadership — that is what Graden’s Spotting Great Leaders Club is all about. The Spotting Great Leaders program is replacing the High Five Program, which was introduced in December 2012 to recognize personal development and leadership. Students who are selected each month will receive a certificate which they can redeem at the 63rd Street Sonic location in Parkville, Missouri. A polka dot with the child’s name will be displayed on the wall inside Graden Elementary for the month they are awarded. At the end of each month, the polka dots are taken down and replaced with a new polka dot honoring students for the next month. We are so proud of our Graden Leaders!

Please join us in congratulating all of the members of our “Spotting Great Leaders Club!”

Library News There will be two exciting events at the Library in October! Camp Read-a-Lot will be for our kindergarten and first grade students on Tuesday, October 9 from 5:30-7:00pm. And the Book Fair will be on Parent-Teacher Conference days, October 24 from 5:00-8:00pm and October 25 from 12:00-8:00pm. See the flyers at the end of the newsletter for more information about these fun events!

Please remember that students should wear appropriate clothing on their art day. Though most of our materials are washable, there are some exceptions and accidents do happen. The Graden Art Show will be on April 17th this year. Each student will have at least 1 piece of work displayed in the Art Show. To view artwork that may be held at school for the Art Show, please be sure to check your account on Artsonia. Work is regularly uploaded into your child’s online art gallery as it is completed. If you would like to be added to the e-mail list for art room volunteers, please send an e-mail to [email protected]. Volunteers are needed on a weekly basis to photograph and upload student work to the Artsonia app. Volunteers can also take down or hang artwork throughout the year.

Nurse News: MEDICATION GIVEN TO STUDENTS AT SCHOOL When students require medication during school hours, the policy set forth by the Park Hill School District needs to be followed for the safety of students. For elementary students, no medication should ever be sent with a child on a bus. This includes simple things such as cough drops or skin cream. All parents must come to the health room to drop off medications and sign a parent authorization form. All medication should be in the original containers and not expired. The Park Hill School District does not provide any medication for students. However, the health room does stock basic topical items such as Bactine, Vaseline, Calamine Lotion, and eye wash. Any medication left in the health room must be picked up by parents and will be disposed of on the last day of school. If you have more specific questions about the Park Hill District Medication Policy, please feel free to contact me! In Good Health, Nurse Kris 816.359.4344 [email protected]

A Note from the Music Room The fifth grade program is here! “The Greatest Show” features songs from Broadway shows such as “Newsies,” “Hamilton,” and “The Lion King.” The students have been doing a fantastic job putting it all together. It will be a great night! In the fall, kindergarten classes work on a steady-beat activity called “paper plate dances.” As you can see, we have a lot of fun while we learn! PE Reminder:

For your child’s safety, it is strongly recommended

that they wear tennis shoes or soft-soled shoes during

Physical Education class. These shoes should cover the

toes and give adequate support to the foot and an-

kle. Dress shoes, cowboy boots, sandals, flip flops,

clogs, Crocs, or tie-up shoes that are left unlaced do

not supply proper support to your child’s feet and

ankles. This increases the risk of injury as there is a

lot of movement involved in Physical Education class.

    Haunted Gym October 31st

On October 31st there will be a

    haunted gym during your child’s

    physical education class. During

    this time, students will participate

in fun and spooky stations with

their classes in place of their regular physical

education class. If you would like to volunteer to help

with a station during the Haunted Gym, please

    contact Coach Munsterman at (816)359-6404.

    Box Tops Competition

Graden Hornets are off to a great start collecting Box Tops! Our first Box Tops collection period closes on October 19. Please send in any collected Box Tops by that date! Of course, keep saving them, there will be more collections throughout the year. Top class for this collection period will win a pizza party!

Counselor’s Corner Dear Graden Families, Every October, schools and organizations across the country join in observing National Bullying Prevention Month. The goal is to work together to prevent all forms of bullying by bringing awareness to the occurrence and effects of bullying on children of all ages. In honor of Bullying Prevention Month, I will be doing counseling lessons centered on kindness, resiliency, and how to be proactive about combating bullying. We take pride in providing a safe, respectful environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally here at Graden. I am excited to continue to foster this with my core counseling curriculum this month. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions at all or would like to meet face to face. I can be reached by email at [email protected] or by phone at 816-359-5647. I look forward to another great month in the hive! Go Hornets! All my best, Cari Cetola School Counselor Graden Elementary

Focus on … Clubs at Graden

Not only do the staff at Graden devote their time, energy, and creativity to our Hornets during school hours … they also facilitate numerous school clubs before and after school to help our students become well-rounded leaders. Here’s the BUZZ on what a few of these clubs have been up to this fall.

5th grade students in J-Club prepare for their daily broadcast. J-Club students create a unique script and slides for each day of the week and then deliver the announcements over a live broadcast to the entire school each day.

    Mrs. Thorson, Mrs. Garcia

Members of the Student Lighthouse team, from kindergarten through 5th grade, participated in the Park Hill South homecoming parade.

Mrs. Ecton, Ms. Weber, Mrs. O’Brien, Mrs. Fohl

Graden E-Club is 2nd and 5th graders committed to the environment. Each student is setting a goal for how they plan to do their part in helping the environment, at home or at school. E-Club members also volunteer to do daily jobs around Graden (giving up their own recess at times!). These jobs include collecting recyclables during lunch, taking recyclables out during recess, cleaning buses at the end of each day, tracking recycling markers for grade-level competitions, and picking up litter outside to keep our Hornet Hive looking beautiful.
