National Day

NE Show

On 8 August, our school celebrated Singapore’s 52nd birthday. Excited pupils, wearing red and white, came to school full of anticipation for the day’s celebration. The contingent of the Red Cross members and our prefects led by our Operations Manager, Mr Yusry, marched in with the national flag and school flag. The highlight of the celebration was the concert. Pupils sang and danced along to this year’s National Day Song, “Because It’s Singapore”. The annual SingSingapore competition drew cheers from everyone when the contestants went on stage to perform. We also hosted some senior citizens from the Lions Befrienders Senior Activity Centre who were equally delighted to celebrate the special occasion with us. It was certainly a meaningful experience for the students and teachers.

This year’s show was held at the Floating Platform at Marina. 182 students and 14 teachers enjoyed the evening watching smart-looking officers in uniforms march past. A motorcade of dynamic military and police vehicles and an array of exquisite performances brought much colours and life to the show. The eventful evening ended with the glittering fireworks which lit up the night sky and brought the show to a terrific closure.

The appointment of new prefects in Sembawang Primary School takes place during the investiture ceremony. The appointment on that day instils a sense of responsibility in the prefects.

This year, the formal ceremony was held on 23 January. There is a total of 93 prefects, in which 35 of them are appointed this year. Our Principal, Mrs Chua, presented the badges to the prefects. After the badge presentation, the newly-appointed Head Prefect, Ferdi Choo from 6A, delivered a speech. At the end of the ceremony, the Head Prefect and Vice-Head Prefects, together with the Exco members, led the prefects in reciting the Prefects’ Pledge.

Bully-Free Ambassadors’ Training Camp

2 Buzz @ Sembawang Primary School • May 2017

On 14 and 15 March, eleven student leaders were selected to participate in the annual Bully-Free Ambassadors’ Training Camp, organised by the Singapore Children’s Society. The aim of the camp is to train student leaders to be ambassadors in advocating a bully-free environment in the school. During the camp, student leaders had the opportunity to learn more about the importance of friendship and pick up some tips on how to prevent and intervene bullying episodes in school.

The programme allowed our student leaders to develop an anti-bully creed and intervention structure. They would work with the school community to create an awareness of bullying and help foster positive friendships among pupils.

The Chinese New Year Celebration gave teachers and pupils an opportunity to learn more about the traditions and customs associated with this festive occasion. Pupils enjoyed the class activities and bonded with their teachers and classmates. A lion dance troupe enthralled the pupils with their performance during the concert. It was certainly a memorable day for the pupils and teachers.

Code for Fun

As part of their Project Work, Primary 3 and 4 pupils had the opportunity to learn and apply coding skills. The Code for Fun Programme, a programme co-sponsored by IDA, was launched in 2016 to introduce coding and robotics technology to pupils. The collaborative experience also allowed pupils to develop social skills, exercise their creativity and acquire computational thinking skills which are essential for the future.

Our school started a Talent Development Programme (TDP) this year. This programme supports the development of students with talents in the Aesthetics and Sports domains. Students had the opportunity to participate in some activities which included “Conversation with a Star”, Workshop Series and Community Engagement Programme. Our students interacted with stars from different domains to learn about their experiences in their profession. TDP students had many opportunities to gain experience and exposure through showcases and competitions. Our TDP students also gave back to the community through a community service learning project with Kindle Garden Preschool by AWWA at the Enabling village on 5 October.

Performing ArtsOur school’s Aesthetics Group made their public appearance at various venues and received appreciation and applause from the audience. Our Chinese Orchestra members performed at One KM Mall on 1 July and entertained the audience with soothing music. Our Dance Team, comprising the Chinese dancers, Indian dancers and Malay dancers, put up an energetic performance at

Causeway Point on 2 July. The dancers also put up exciting performances at the open space beside Sun Plaza on 6 August. We are proud to share that our Dance Team had made it through to the finals of the 7th Singapore International

Dance Festival 2017 on 25 August. Students in the competition demonstrated perseverance and resilience and their efforts paid off as they were awarded the Silver Award.

National Orchid Garden

Insect Mysteries

Singapore’s National Orchid Garden is a picturesque attraction that showcases the world’s largest collection of orchids. With over 1000 species and 2000 hybrids of orchids, the Primary 2 pupils were treated to amazing views around them. Though the walk through the National Orchid Garden was long, pupils were delighted when they stepped into the Mist House and Cool house where they felt the cool air and drifting mist against their faces. These two attractions provide a realistic representation of the high elevation where different breeds of orchids grow. The pupils also visited the VIP garden which boasts a large collection of hybrid orchids named after dignitaries who visited the National Orchid Gardens.

The Primary 3 pupils attended a workshop on Insect Mysteries at the Singapore Science Centre in Term 2. They learned about some characteristics of insects and what these characteristics could enable the insects to do. Do you know that crickets have compound eyes? These compound eyes consist of many tiny lenses that allow the crickets to detect any small movement around them. The pupils also observed and touched some insects like the Cicada and the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach. They had the opportunity to use the microscope to observe how tiny insects like the bees collect and keep the pollen. The pupils certainly had a meaningful time learning at the Science Centre.

It was a wonderful journey.

I learned a lot about orchids.

I recommend you to visit the

Singapore Orchid Garden. It will be

a very nice experience for you too.

I have learned a lot from the Science Centre. We

were taught that insects have 3 body parts, 3 pairs

of jointed legs, a pair of feelers and a hard outer

covering (exoskeleton). I took lots of interesting

photos of the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach. I

would love to visit the Science Centre again!

Red Cross strives to instil leadership and character-building skills in the members. They are given opportunities to demonstrate the value of care towards others and the environment through their involvement in Values-In-Action activities. Our members visited the Lions Befrienders and had fun playing games and interacting with the seniors there. Our members also went to Sembawang Park for the Clean Singapore Learning Trail (Beaches) programme. The students learned about the importance of taking ownership of Singapore beaches and the programme also enhanced their understanding of key environmental issues. The members also picked up practical skills like basic First Aid during their CCA sessions. The skills learnt aim to remind all members that they can make a difference to someone in need through their knowledge and skills in First Aid.

Red Cross Activities

While Games Day is not something new in Sembawang Primary, this year’s Games Day certainly had a few exciting “firsts”. It was the first time Games Day was held on Children’s Day and it was also the first time that Games Day was held like a carnival. Pupils were able to choose the games they wanted to play at the various game stations. The games were meticulously crafted to allow students to practise the skills they have learnt during PE lessons. Looking at the students’ happy faces, this is definitely one of their most memorable Games Day!

After having fun with the games, the students were treated to an array of exciting performances put up by their teachers. Their loud cheers showed how thrilled they were to see their teachers on stage!

Math Trail The Math Trail for Primary 1 to Primary 4 students which was aimed to provide opportunities for students to apply mathematical skills to solve real-life problems was conducted in Semester 2. By complementing the content of Mathematics taught in the classroom, this outdoor learning experience helped students develop an appreciation and enjoyment of Mathematics in everyday situations.

During the trail, students worked in groups to solve Math questions at various locations in the school compound. They identified prices of items and employed mathematical skills to make good estimates of measurements. It was a fun-filled day for the students as their interest in Mathematics was heightened.

The Rooftop Farm was opened this year to provide students with opportunities for outdoor experiential learning. Our students planted vegetables such as kangkong and spinach as well as a variety of beans like green beans and soya beans. In doing so, they applied what they had learnt in Science lessons about the conditions for healthy plant growth. They observed the stages of growth in the plants and learned about water conservation as the Rooftop Farm has a system to collect and store rainwater which is then used to water the plants. Apart from being fun, the planting experience taught our students the importance of teamwork and responsibility.

NEA Environment Challenge

The Science & Green Club members took part in the Environment Challenge for Schools organised by the National Environment Agency (NEA) in August 2016 and won the rst prize!

A team of 7 pupils had read an article about microbeads. Microbeads, also known as microplastics, are found in beauty products and when washed down plugholes, absorbed toxins before making their way to our water bodies. The team created three different prototypes of lters which can be tted over plugholes to prevent as many microbeads from entering our water bodies. The highlight of the project was getting to meet the Prime Minister himself! The team could hardly contain their excitement as they explained their project and proudly showed an impressed Mr Lee the results of their work.

Primary 6 students were in high spirits as they marvelled at the historical buildings and heritage in Kampong Glam and Little India during their learning journey in Term 2. They learned about the history of the Sultan Mosque and were awed by the fact that its dome was decorated with glass bottles! The vast variety of souvenirs at Arab Street gave our students an idea of the traditional games played in the 1970-1980s.

At Little India, the students visited a Hindu temple and learned more about the Hindu religion and culture. They were also enticed by the wide spread of Indian food which included Roti Prata, Teh Tarik and Indian Rojak, just to name a few. The learning journey left the students satisfied with their newly acquired knowledge of the various cultures and their history.

On 24 and 25 August, Primary 1 students went to Jacob Ballas for their learning journey. They learned about the different types of plants and how to appreciate and show care for the places around them. Students were reminded to be gentle when handling the plants and not to pluck any plant from the garden. Pupils had a chance to observe and touch different plants at the Sensory Garden and the Pond. Some pupils were lucky to catch a glimpse of dragonflies and squirrels. At the Cave, pupils listened to their echo and experienced walking across the shaky Suspension Bridge. It was a tiring but fruitful journey for our Primary 1 students.

P4 Adventure Camp

During the rst three days of the March holidays from 13 to 15 March, the Primary 4 pupils headed to MOE Labrador Adventure Centre for a 3-day, 2-night camp. The pupils were treated to an experience lled with fun team-building games, exciting activities and an unforgettable camp re.

During the various team-building activities, the pupils forged new friendships, learned how to work together despite their differences and help one another. Their con dence and self-esteem were boosted when they succeeded in conquering their fears during the high elements activities such as ‘Zipline’ and ‘Challenge Rope Course’. (CRC)The pupils experienced so much fun and excitement.

The camp ended with a blast as the pupils put up amazing group performances during the camp re. Good job, Primary 4 pupils! It was heartening to see the pupils having an enriching and memorable time at the camp!

Overseas Learning Journey

The school organised a 5-day overseas trip to Siem Reap, Cambodia from 20 to 24 May. Thirty students from Primary 5 were chosen after a few rounds of selection. The group was accompanied by five teachers.

Prior to the trip, the students helped with the collection of donated items such as story books, stationery, soft toys and footwear. These items and some groceries donated by the staff were then given to the orphanage which the group visited.

During their five-day stay, the students got to watch skilful acrobats at the Phare Circus. They enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime ride on an ox-cart and had a first-hand experience at planting rice seedlings at the padi fields. On their last morning at Siem Reap, the students woke up early to witness the sunrise at Cambodia’s most iconic temple, Angkor Wat. The cloudy weather did not dampen their spirits to make the most out of their last day in the Land of Smiles.

The students shared their memorable experience with the rest of the school at the school assembly. They were thankful for the overseas learning opportunity and had learnt to be more independent and appreciative of the things they had taken for granted back home.

Teachers’ Day was celebrated on 30 August. Our emcees, Ferdi Choo (6A), Hannah Kaitlyn (5A), and Gerard Lim (4A), together with all students, welcomed the teachers as they entered the hall with our principal and vice-principals. The teachers then went on stage to recite the Teachers’ Pledge. After Mrs Chua’s speech, our Head Prefect, Ferdi Choo from Primary 6A, on behalf of the school cohort, delivered a speech to show their appreciation to the teachers. Four prefects also recited poems which they had written in four different languages to honour their teachers. The concert was filled with heart-warming dance and song performances by the students and Parent Support Group. At the end of the concert, students sang the song ‘Do I Make You Proud’ wholeheartedly for their teachers. It was a touching moment for the teachers. The teachers then bonded with one another over tea.

In Term 1, as part of their Values-in-Action (ViA) programme, our Primary 4 pupils went through a few lessons on the needs and challenges faced by the elderly and the ways in which they can help them and communicate with them. 6 classes went on a service learning trip to four different Seniors Activity Centres on 2 and 9 March. The pupils had prepared items to entertain the elderly at the centres during their visit. They were very enthusiastic and had practised hard for it. The pupils also learned how to make different animals using Origami paper during their art lessons and taught it to the elderly at the centres. The elderly at the Centres enjoyed themselves and appreciated the hands-on session and the performances put up by our pupils. Despite their age, they eagerly took part in the simple games planned for them. Grocery items and toiletries donated by the pupils were distributed to the seniors as prizes during the games and lucky draw sessions. The pupils also had opportunities to apply what they had learnt in class during their conversations with the elderly. The programme was a very ful lling one for the pupils, teachers and elderly at the Centres.

On 13 February, our school commemorated the Total Defence Day. It reminded us of the day Singapore fell to the Japanese. On that day, pupils had a taste of wartime food such as porridge and plain bread during recess. Information on the history of MINDEF and SAF was displayed on boards. Pupils had to match the ve pillars of defence to their descriptions. The highlight of the day would be the Emergency Preparedness show by NFEC. Pupils learned how to react during an emergency. Total Defence Day promotes the awareness of the different ways we can contribute to strengthen Singapore’s defence as “Together We Keep Singapore Strong”.
