Butter fan bag pattern

About this pattern: This pattern is worked in the BACK LOOPS ONLY; by working in the back loops it gives it a ridged effect. Also this bag is done in pieces and then later seamed together. Some of the pieces are joined as we go along and others are crocheted and then single crocheted together. Materials Needed. 1 size H/8 (5.0mm) Crochet Hook 2 skeins of 4ply worsted weight yarn (One will be color A, the other B) A pair of scissors A yarn needle Stitches to know: SC (Single Crochet) SC2TOG (Single Crochet 2 together) You should already know how to: Tie a knot Make a chain Slip stitch Do a reverse single crochet How to Single Crochet 2 stitches together: If you do not know how to do this, you insert the hook into one stitch, draw up a loop, insert the hook into the next stitch and draw up one more loop, then yarn over the hook and pull through all 3 loops, you have now just did a single crochet decrease.

To make the fans: (Make 4) To begin loosely chain 49, if it so happens that you have trouble controlling the tightness of your chains, use a hook that’s a half size bigger such as hook size I. Row 1: 1 single crochet in 2nd chain from hook then do 1 single crochet in each of the next 5 chains, 3 single crochets in the next chain (This forms the first mountain peak of the ripple) , 1 single crochet in each of the next 7 chains, **skip the next 2 chains (This forms the first valley of the ripple), 1 single crochet in each of the next 7 chains, 3 single crochets in next chain, 1 single crochet in each of next 7 chains; rep from ** across, Chain one and turn.

Row 2: Working in back loops only, skip the first stitch, Then single crochet 2 stitches together, 1 single crochet in each of the next 5 single crochets, 3 single crochet in the next single crochet, *1 single crochet in each of the next 7 single crochets, skip next 2 single crochets, 1 single crochet in each of the next 7 single crochets, 3 single crochets in next single crochet, rep from * across until you reach the last 7 stitches, 1 single crochet in each of next 5 single crochets, single crochet the last 2 stitches together, Chain 1 and turn.

Important note for Rows 3 – 12: Keep crocheting these just as you would row 2 except you WILL NOT skip the first stitch, you will single crochet the first stitch and the second stitch together, and do the rest of the row as you would row 2. Just remember that when you crochet 3 in the same stitch it forms the mountain peaks and when you skip 2 stitches it forms the valleys, make sure your mountain peaks and valleys line up or your ripples will be a bit off. Just remember there are 7 stitches in between each mountain peak and valley.

Row 13: (Still working in the back loops) Single crochet 2 stitches together, 1 single crochet in the next 5 single crochets, insert hook into BOTH loops of the 3rd mountain peak as seen in Figure 1, next insert hook into both loops of the 1st mountain peak and then in the middle or 2nd mountain peak as shown in the picture above, single crochet all three of these mountain peaks together. Single crochet in the next 5 single crochets and then single crochet the last 2 stitches together.

Row: 14: Chain 1. Single crochet 2 stitches together, 1 single crochet in the next 9 single crochets, single crochet the last 2 stitches together. Chain 1 and turn. Row 15: Single crochet 2 stitches together, 1 single crochet in the next 7 single crochets, single crochet the last 2 stitches together. Chain 1 and turn.

Row: 16: Single crochet in each stitch across. Chain 1 and turn. Row 17: Single crochet in each stitch across. Chain 1, pull to secure and fasten off. (On your 2nd and 4th fan do not fasten off, instead use the rest of the yarn to join one fan half to another fan half like below:)

To join, turn 2 pieces wrong side out and single crochet them together in the back loops only to keep the bag’s pattern consistent.

Do these 2 times to make a front and a back fan piece. (Right & wrong side shown below)

To make the Trapezoid: (Make 2) To begin: Chain 10. Row 1: Single crochet in second chain from hook, then 1 single crochet in each chain across to total 9 single crochets. Row 2: 2 single crochet in first single crochet, 1 single crochet in the next 7 single crochets and then 2 single crochets in the last sc (11sc) Row 3: 2 single crochet in first single crochet, 1 single crochet in the next 9 single crochets and then 2 single crochets in the last sc (13sc) Row 4: 2 single crochet in first single crochet, 1 single crochet in the next 11 single crochets and then 2 single crochets in the last sc (15sc)

Row 5: 2 single crochet in first single crochet, 1 single crochet in the next 13 single crochets and then 2 single crochets in the last sc (17sc) Row 6: 2 single crochet in first single crochet, 1 single crochet in the next 15 single crochets and then 2 single crochets in the last sc (19sc) Row 7: 2 single crochet in first single crochet, 1 single crochet in the next 17 single crochets and then 2 single crochets in the last sc (21sc) Row 8: 2 single crochet in first single crochet, 1 single crochet in the next 19 single crochets and then 2 single crochets in the last sc (23sc) Row 9: 2 single crochet in first single crochet, 1 single crochet in the next 21 single crochets and then 2 single crochets in the last sc (25sc) Row 10: 2 single crochet in first single crochet, 1 single crochet in the next 23 single crochets and then 2 single crochets in the last sc (27sc) Row 11: 2 single crochet in first single crochet, 1 single crochet in the next 25 single crochets and then 2 single crochets in the last sc (29sc) Row 12: 2 single crochet in first single crochet, 1 single crochet in the next 27 single crochets and then 2 single crochets in the last sc (31sc) Row 13: 2 single crochet in first single crochet, 1 single crochet in the next 29 single crochets and then 2 single crochets in the last sc (33sc) Row 14: 2 single crochet in first single crochet, 1 single crochet in the next 31 single crochets and then 2 single crochets in the last sc (35sc) Row 15: 2 single crochet in first single crochet, 1 single crochet in the next 33 single crochets and then 2 single crochets in the last sc (37sc) Row 16: 2 single crochet in first single crochet, 1 single crochet in the next 35 single crochets and then 2 single crochets in the last sc (39sc)

To join the trapezoid to the fan, turn the trapezoid wrong side our as well at the bag and single crochet it together with the fan, make sure the single crochet ribbing likes up on the bag correctly.

Optionally you can also slip stitch the holes made when joining the 3 mountain peaks on row 13 of the fans together. It gives the bag a cleaner look.

Joining the 2 bag halves, with the 2 right sides facing out and with color B, single crochet the 2 pieces together, Make sure to get each loop of the beginning chain and single crochet into the big holes, not the loops but inside of the big holes.

Once you’ve joined the bag, single crochet around the open part, I won’t give a specific number here but, just don’t single crochet in every single spot or your bag will be wavy looking at the top instead of straight. Use your own personal judgment here, I ripped mine out once and did it again because I was aiming to do all 68 single crochets, not a good idea.

Finally for the button flap, join in the square space, opposite of the bottom trapezoid, crochet 8 across. Chain 1 and turn, Row: 2 Single crochet in each back loop of the single crochets, chain one and turn. Repeat for rows 3 – 5 Row 6: Single crochet in the next 3 single crochets, chain 2, skip 2 single crochets (This creates the button hole) then single crochet in the next 3 single crochets. Chain 1 and turn Row 7: Single crochet in the next 3 single crochets, single crochet IN the next 2 chains, NOT around it but inside of it as you would any beginning chain. Then single crochet in the next 3 chains. Chain 1 and turn Repeat row 2 for rows 8 and 9. Row 10: Do a reverse single crochet in each single crochet across. Fasten off. Sew on a button onto the front part of the bag.

For the handles, (sorry no step by step pictures but they’re pretty easy enough) Hold 2 strands of color B together and Chain 86. Row 1: Slip stitch in the bottom bump of each chain across. Fasten off. Tie evenly spaced knots on the handle to make it shorter. Sew the handles onto the inside of the bag and you’re done.

Weave in all of your ends and you’re done!
