6 September/October 2009 BUSINESS

Small business is big business to our community. The small businesseslocated in our community are significant contributors to our local economy. They provide jobs for our people and needed goods and services for us all.The largest number of Chamber members are small businesses. Many of ourcommunity leaders are owners of small businesses. Small business owners andtheir employees provide countless hours of volunteer time to support ournumerous Not for Profit organizations. Our community is also blessed to have numerous Not for Profit

organizations, who provide a significant variety of services that contribute tothe quality of life for all our residents. Volunteers and employees of theseorganizations support our schools, provide cultural opportunities, care for theneedy, and intervene in crisis situations, just to name a few of the activitiesthese organizations support.

Our Chamber annually recognizes the efforts of our small businesses and notfor profits by selecting three finalists from both and then choosing a SmallBusiness of the Year and Not for Profit of the Year. Congratulations to Modern

Gas and The Lily Pad for being selected as the 2010 Small Business of the Year and Not for Profit of the Year, respectively. Both of these enterprises are well deserving of this recognition for the contributions they maketo our community.Your Chamber understands the importance of our small businesses and, during 2009, we have been

evaluating our services to small business to determine how we can enhance those services for our members. We appointed a Small Business/Membership Task Force to address these issues and, under the leadership ofChair-elect Jimmy Wilson, this Task Force presented its report at the August Board meeting. The Boardapproved the report and the recommendations of the Task Force will be included in the Chamber’s programof work. The Small Business Committee has been renamed "Small Business Resource Committee" to recognize its

revised mission of being a provider of resources to our small business members. The Mission Statement ofthis Committee is "To build upon and enhance the relationships with our Chamber members, provide benefitsto meet member needs, and develop opportunities to assist members’ business growth." As the revised plan isimplemented, look for how you can benefit from the activities of this committee.Thank you for your continued support of our Chamber as we seek to be proactive, progressive and pro

business.

serving under the umbrella of theLily Pad garnered that facility theChamber’s fourth Nonprofit of the Yearrecognition.“This must be what it feels like to

win an Oscar,” Lily Pad ExecutiveDirector Karen Kemp said after theWednesday-morning breakfast. “This isjust huge for us … for our staff, ourboard and the families we serve. Ashard as we’ve tried to get the wordout, there are still people who do notknow we’re here. This (recognition)gives us an opportunity to tell ourstory.”And that story is a compelling one.

Born of a sexual assault nurseexaminer program established by theDougherty County District Attorney’soffice in 1998, the Lily Pad breathedfirst life in 2006. In its three years ofexistence, the facility has become anoasis of mercy for some of thecommunity’s once most helplessvictims: its children. With thedevelopment of the Firefly HouseChildren’s Advocacy Center, theDougherty CASA (court-appointedspecial advocates for children) and theBoren Center for Sexual Assault, allunder the Lily Pad umbrella, victimsreceive core services vital to theirfuture well-being.The Lily Pad offers forensic exams,

advocacy and follow-up services forvictims of child abuse and sexualassault. Also among its more than 20services are medical and legalaccompaniment, legal advocacy, counseling, group therapy, and botheducational and preventative initiatives.“We’ve felt the strain of this down

economy, but it never fails that whenpeople in the community hear that wehave needs, they respond,” Kemp said.As when the Lily Pad outgrew its

original Third Avenue location andmade a move to its current site at 320W. Second Ave. Thanks to donationsand a whole lot of sweat equity fromcommunity volunteers, more than$100,000 in improvements and repairswere completed without the use of apenny of tax money. That money has been money well-

spent. In just the past year, more than1,000 victims have been served at theLily Pad in six judicial circuits and inpartnership with 52 law enforcementagencies. More than 600 cases of child

abuse and sexual assault have beenhandled through the CASA program, and in 2009 all cases that originated atthe Lily Pad that later led to courtcases resulted in a 100 percentconviction rate in Dougherty County.“The economy has not only affected

our monetary bottom line, it’s also ledto a spike in our numbers,” Kemp said.“That’s another reason this awardmeans so much to us. It enhances ouropportunities to solicit state, federaland foundation funding sources, and itmakes the community more aware ofour needs.”The Lily Pad has been able to utilize

89 percent of its expenditures todirectly support its core services. That’sbeen a priority concern for thefacility’s seven full-time and one part-time employees, as well as fourcontract Registered Nurses, threecontract interviewers and interns fromAlbany and Valdosta State Universitiesand Darton and Thomas Colleges. It’s also crucial as the Lily Pad works

toward its goal of training 1,000volunteers in child abuse and sexualassault prevention in the next twoyears as one of four Georgia sitescertified as Stewards of Children andFrom Darkness to Light trainingprograms.“The numbers of victims in this area

are staggering, and while theincidences of abuse are indeed high, another reason our numbers haveincreased is that the community iscoming to understand that we are trueadvocates for victims,” Kemp said. “Thecommunity understands that when achild makes an outcry, we respond.”Meanwhile, Modern Gas – “The

Pros in Propane Since 1954 – hasdeveloped a reputation for not onlytop-of-the-line service, but also for itsvisionary innovations within theindustry. Among the forays theHolloway family has ventured intoover the years are the motor home andRV industry; a temporary Greyhoundbus service terminal; aHonda/Yamaha/Kawasaki motorcycle,ATV and watercraft dealership; apropane cylinder exchange business;gas cooking appliances and waterheaters; and a showroom featuringgrills, fish cookers, fireplace displaysand grilling accessories.“Over the years, as federal and state

regulations changed, propanebusinesses had to jump through moreand more hoops,” Modern Gas SeniorVice President Steven Holloway said.“It became much more difficult for the‘mom and pop’ stores to make a profit. In fact, many of them were absorbedby the multi-state companies.“But we’ve had some nice success

over the years moving into somediverse growth areas.”The Modern Gas professionals

turned an existing cylinder exchangemodel into a statewide program thathas proven to be quite successful withmore than 1,500 locations in Georgiaand Florida. And with the company’sfour National Fireplace Institute-certified staffers on hand to providetop-quality fireplace installations,Modern Gas has also become a majorplayer in the construction market. Thatmarket also includes tank and tanklesswater heaters and gas appliances.“One of the things we determined

early on was that very few gascompanies wanted to dedicate thenecessary resources of manpower andinventory to be able to respond on atimely basis to builders looking for acomplete one-stop propane shop,”Holloway said. “Homebuilders arenotorious for waiting for the lastminute to call and say they need aninstall, and the home construction willcome to a standstill. We have thetrained staff and the products to keepfrom slowing building progress whentime is money.”Since Dan and Judy’s humble

beginnings, Modern Gas has grown tonow include 47 employees and 30sales and service vehicles at fourAlbany locations and one in Hampton.“Mom and dad were always

innovators,” Steven Holloway said. “Ithas been their vision that has kept thebusiness moving forward. A lot ofcompanies in the propane businesshave tried to continue doing businessthe way they did 20 years ago. Thatmodel doesn’t work for us. We’vealways looked to branch out into newareas.”Other finalists for Small Business of

the Year were Eagle Cleaners and OleTime Country Buffet, while Not ForProfit of the Year finalists for 2010were Girls, Incorporated of Albany andThronateeska Heritage Center.

One of Albany’s most innovative businesses and one of the community’s mostrespected nonprofits were recognized August 26 at the Hilton Garden Inn asSmall Business and Not For Profit of the Year at the Albany Area Chamber of

Commerce’s annual Rise ‘n’ Shine Breakfast, sponsored by SB&T.

Downtown mainstay Modern Gas,founded by Dan and Judy Holloway in1954, has been a trend-setter in thepropane industry since the Hollowaysopened the business 55 years ago withthree employees and two delivery

trucks. Diversity has been the buzzword for Modern Gas over the years, and it’s the Holloways’ willingness toset the pace in the industry rather thansimply follow the lead of others thatallowed the business to stand out and

made it the perfect candidate toreceive the Chamber’s 11th SmallBusiness of the Year award.Meanwhile, the compassion shown

for victims of child abuse and sexualassault by the staff and volunteers
