Local artists as well as students of Catholic Central, guided by Amanda Hoeppner, have created beautiful and creative works of art for the BACC Garden Bench/Chair Auction. The benches were built under the direction of Mike Prahl, by the BHS A.C.E Academy students: The variety of subjects and colors used will make it hard to choose

just one. The Chamber would like to thank all of the students and local artists for sharing their talents. The proceeds from the auction helps fund scholarships for local high school students. The benches and chairs are featured at area banks, businesses and grocery stores throughout our community, allowing everyone a chance to bid on the bench or chair of your choice. Check “Facebook” or our website for a listing of the bench locations. Call 262-763-6044 or visit www.burlingtonchamber.org for more information. Auction ends May 31.

ChocolateFest 2019Remember music in the good old days? Was your favorite head-bangin’, blood-pumpin’ 80s hair bands? You can live

on a prayer, walk this way and never stop believin’ at ChocolateFest this Memorial Day Weekend. The music lasts from Friday evening til Monday. General admission tickets cost $8 or visit the event’s www.ChocolateFest.com.

Chocolate City aka Burlington, Wisconsin has been celebrating chocolate since 1987 when Nestle USA helped the community celebrate their 20th anniversary here and … the idea to create a chocolate festival was born. Now, every Memorial Day weekend dedicated to that purpose, this four day festival of delicious sweetness is the highlight of the early part of summer.

This first of the season festival has everything you could ever want to make it a fun, amazing and delicious experience. There’s a 5K run, eating contests, all kinds of samples, cooking demonstrations, rides, live music and more. When they say music, they mean it! Bella Cain, Squad 51 (paying tribute to the best there ever was), Dayrollers, Almighty Vinyl, Gravity of Youth, Mad Bark (Rolling Stones to Lady Gaga), Astro Blues Band, Lunchmoney Bullies, The Britins (relive the British invasion with this Beatles tribute), PF and the Flatheads…

And, if all that isn’t enough to satisfy, then enjoy the craft fair in Echo Park both Saturday and Sunday from 10 to 5 – it’s amazing!Browse our calendar of events at www.burlingtonchamber.org for all our area has to offer.

Honor America’s Veterans – Remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Wear a red poppy to remember and support all who have died, served or are serving to protect our country and our freedom. See a Vet – Say Thank You!

After World War I, the poppy flourished in Europe and quickly became a symbol of the sacrifices made by Americans and allied service members around the world. Soldiers returning from WWI brought home the flowers in memory of the barren landscape transformed by the sudden growth of wild red poppies among the newly dug graves. In 1920 the red poppy was adopted as The American Legion Family’s memorial flower and in 2017 Congress designated the Friday before Memorial Day as National Poppy Day.

Today, it remains an iconic symbol of honor to all who have sacrificed for our American freedoms. American Legion and Auxiliary members distribute millions of poppies annually across the country in exchange for donations that go directly to assist needy veterans, active military and their families. Burlington donations support the Vet Homes at Union grove and King, WI, Zablocki VA, Fisher House, Camp American Legion, Vet Roll Trips to DC, and various other programs.

GRAND PRIZE WINNER2019 Chocolate Extravaganza

Rose GordonDark Chocolate Tart withEspresso Whipped Cream

This is what your morning coffee dreams about. A choco-late crust, not-too-sweet dark chocolate filling topped with luscious swirls of deep espresso flavored whipped cream.

INGREDIENTSFor Chocolate Crust:14 5x2 ¼ inch chocolate graham crackers about 7 ounces, finely ground1 stick butter melted6 tablespoons sugar

For Dark Chocolate Filling:1 ¼ cup heavy cream9 ounces bittersweet or dark chocolate not more than 65% cacao, chopped or in chips2 large eggs1 teaspoon vanilla extract¼ teaspoons salt

For Espresso Whipped Cream:4 teaspoons warm water1 teaspoon unflavored gelatin1 teaspoon espresso powder or 1 packet Starbucks Via1 cup heavy whipping cream very cold1/3 cup powdered sugar

INSTRUCTIONSFor Chocolate Crust:Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.Combine graham crackers, butter and sugar then press

evenly into the bottom and sides of a 11’w x 2’ tart pan. Bake for 10 minutes then cool on a rack for at least 15 minutes.

For Filling:Boil cream, then pour over chocolate in a microwave-safe

bowl. Let stand 5 minutes then stir until smooth. Let cool until no longer warm to the touch.Whisk together the eggs, vanilla, and salt in a separate

bowl then stir into the chocolate mixture until smooth.Pour filling into the cooled crust. Bake until filling is set

around the edges but still just a bit wobbly in the middle, about 20 minutes. Cool completely (about an hour) on a rack.

Make Espresso Whipped Cream:In your smallest pan, combine gelatin, espresso powder

and warm water. Let stand until thickened.Heat over low heat until gelatin and espresso are just

dissolved. Remove from heat. Do not allow it to set, move directly on to the next step.In a cold bowl, with a cold whisk attachment, with the

mixer on high, beat the cream and powdered sugar until slightly thickened.Reduce the mixer speed to low and slowly pour in the

gelatin mixture. Then whip at high speed until stiff peaks form and it is thick enough to pipe. With a 1M tip, pipe the whipped cream in large rosettes

onto the top of the cooled tart, filling in any gaps with small stars. The tart should keep, covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. 12 Servings

National Police WeekIn 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial

Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. National Police Week serves to acknowledge the men and women who protect and serve our communities each and every day and gives special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

Communities across the United States will come together during National Police Week to honor and remember those law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as the family members, friends and fellow officers they left behind. On May 15, 2019 the City of Burlington will remember the ultimate sacrifice Officer Hubert “Pink” Schenning (End-of-Watch: February 9, 1935) and Sergeant Anthony “Tony” Eilers (End-of-Watch: February 5, 1962) gave to the City of Burlington, both shot to death in the line of duty. 1700 S. Within the next few months Hutchins is excited to announce he will be opening his very own office here in town. As of now, he works in the same office as fellow advisor, Dean Anderson, it’s been a great opportunity to get familiar with the business. Hutchins says, “I truly enjoy helping people. The finance industry does a fantastic job of over-com-plicating things and it’s part of my job to make sense of that so you can enjoy your hard work.”

Being from Prairie Du Chien, WI, Jacob was eager to return to his home state. As a former college athlete, he enjoys playing sports and staying active, his latest at-tempted sport is Pickleball. Remember When

Melody SkatelandWhile indoor roller skating had been somewhat popular in Burlington since

at least the 1880s, it was not until the mid-1950s that a building was constructed specifically as a roller skating rink. Prior to that, roller skating enthusiasts had used existing buildings, such as Burlington’s Opera House and an empty former factory building, for roller skating activities.

The indoor roller skating seasons usually began in fall and ended in the spring, since whole-building air conditioning would not become available until several decades later. The early rinks were generally open only a couple of evenings and one or two afternoons a week.

In March 1954 Burlington residents Philip A. Larson and Irba L. Brierly asnnounced that they would construct a 66 by 112 foot building on Wilmot Avenue (now S. Pine Street) for a roller skating rink. Following its construction, the rink was open for inspection on June 3 and skating started on June 4. A grand opening with favors, prizes, and races was held on June 27. A contest held to name the rink was won by Mrs. Marion Frank, who suggested “Melody Skateland.” Joe Laurey, world roller skating champion, was present for the first day of skating.

The air-conditioned rink, with the largest loudspeaker system in Burlington at that time, was open each evening from 7:30 to 11:30 and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 2 until 5. Larson and Brierly held many unusual and special events, including Halloween costume parties and dress-up formals, to attract customers. After almost two years, however, the owners decided that the business was not succeeding and they put the building up for sale.

After the sale, the building housed Northern Engineering Laboratories (NEL) and the General Crystal Company. NEL moved to a building on Beloit Street in July 1961, leaving General Crystal in the former roller rink building. A fire in November 1961 destroyed the building and its contents. Today, the former Melody Skateland site is part of an open area north of the Bridge Street intersection with S. Pine Street.

Melody Skateland on Wilmot Avenue (now S. Pine St.), shown in 1954, was the first building in Bur-lington built expressly to house a roller skating rink. The rink went out of business in 1956. The build-ing was destroyed in a 1961 fire. (Emmett Raettig photo)

Jimmy, the roller skating horse, led by Albert McAlexander, was the featured performer at Melody Skateland in December 1954. The three year old pinto stallion had donned his first skate when five months old and, after a year of patient and persistent training, made his first public appearance when nearing age 2. Ask the Bug Expert Hello Burlington Residents!

Insects, everyone has them no one wants them. Here I will help you learn what you can do to take care of those insects or rodents that may be bothering you. This Month Insect:  Box Elders

The time to start treating for them is NOW! Being pro-active then re-active will save you a lot of problems in the coming months. What they like: They feed on Maple and Ash trees. What part of the building do they like: They like the south side of the buildings and rocks to warm themselves in the sun. How to control them from entering your Home or Business: Treat them with a chemical that is labeled for box elder bugs. If you’re having a problem in your home, you must find out where they are getting in and sealing up the cracks or openings where they are entering. This must be done before they start to migrate in the walls. If they are in the walls, a dust must be used to kill them. Chemicals that you use to kill them on the outside should be micro-encap-sulated This formulation doesn’t break down from the sun or wash away. When using a store bought insecticide, be sure to read the label and apply correctly any deviation of using the product you could put your family or pets in danger.

Happy Spring! As nature bursts into bloom, it becomes evident what didn’t make it through the recent winter of extremes. Before grabbing the shovel or the saw, perhaps a bit more patience is in order. Remember that some late-flowering plants remain dormant longer in the spring. Rose of Sharon and butterfly bushes like to sleep in late, let us think they are dead, and then spring to life. Another way to check for life is to scratch a little bark with your fingernail. If there’s green underneath, let it be. A drink of root stimulator and a couple more weeks may be all the encouragement it needs.

There are always casualties in the landscape every spring – either from the harsh winter, the lack of water last fall, or maybe it’s simply their time. As you look for replacements, consider the following new versions of old favorite shrubs.

Smokebush ‘Winecraft Black’ is an improvement on the familiar smokebush due to its round habit and dwarf size (5 feet) which means little to no pruning is needed and it will fit into most landscapes. Burgundy leaves turn to almost black in the summer followed by plumes of ‘smoke’ in late summer and pretty orange, red fall color.

Butterfly Bush ‘Pugster Blue’ will attract just as many butterflies as its taller relatives, but its compact size (2’x2’) make it suitable for any sunny yard. This new version by Proven Winners has been bred for sturdier stems and better winter hardiness. Also available in ‘Pugster Pink’.

Hydrangea ‘Mini Mauvette’. Finally a purple hydrangea for Wisconsin gar-deners! This new smooth hydrangea is in the same family as the classic ‘Annabelle’ and an improvement of ‘Invincibelle.’ Deep pink-mauve flowers on sturdy stems begin to bloom early summer. ‘Mini Mauvette’ is hardy to zone 3 and grows to a compact 36 inches.

Summersweet ‘Sugartina’ is a sweet new version in the Clethra family. Large white bottlebrush flowers are fragrant, attract butterflies, and appear mid-summer when not much else is blooming. ‘Sugartina’ grows to 36 inches, tolerates clay soil, and does best in part sun/full sun conditions. It also is native and deer resistant. Now that’s sweet!

Rose ‘Lotty’s Love’. Could it be the mauve colored flowers, or it’s resistance to diseases, or its old-fashion charm that make ‘Lotty’s Love’ a must-have this season? For me, it’s the cinnamon-scented flowers on this rugosa rose. Plant her in full sun to make her happy.

Japanese Maple ‘Northwind’. For all of you who have tried growing Japanese maples without much success, ‘Northwind’ is for you. This new variety is a cross between Japanese maple and Korean maple, making it hardy to zone 4a (-30 degrees)- a rarity for sure! Leaves emerge red in spring and change to green by mid-summer. Fall is when it shines in the landscape, displaying dramatic shades of orange and red.

Plants are constantly being improved by breeders for better hardiness, more disease resistance, compact habit, more flowers, and sturdier stems. It’s worth taking a little extra time to look for new, unfamiliar varieties the next time you visit a garden center.

Tracy Hankwitz is a horticulturist and general manager of Burlington Garden Center where you’ll find these and many more new versions of old favorites.
