Nearly 120 Years of HistoryVolunteers seekhistoric markerfor church withrich local history.

Little Zion Baptist Church seeks historic marker.

Local History

By Corazon Sandoval Foley

If a church could speak, thenLittle Zion Baptist Churchwould be a popular local his-torian in Fairfax County. One

that is proud of its rich historical tra-ditions in this special place thatGeorge Washington once called home.

On July 4, I was privileged to ini-tiate a project to install a historicmarker for the Little Zion BaptistChurch and Cemetery located acrossthe entry into our Edgewater commu-nity on Burke Lake Road. I am writ-ing this article because I would like torequest community support to raisefunds for the historic marker and theunveiling ceremony that we hope toconduct in 2011 to celebrate the 120thanniversary of the Little Zion BaptistChurch.

The Greater Little ZionBaptist Church owns theLittle Zion Baptist Churchand Cemetery and has thelead role in getting the his-toric marker on behalf of the commu-nity. I am grateful to Rev. JamesMurphy and to Dolores Claytor, chair-woman of the Board of Trustees, forsharing with me more fascinating de-tails of the history of Little Zion Bap-tist Church from which their own con-

gregation began. We are also very grateful to Fairfax County

Chairwoman Sharon Bulova (D-At-large)and Supervisor John Cook (R-Braddock) fortheir active support of the historic marker

project.“I am pleased to lend my en-

thusiastic support to the instal-lation of a historic marker onthe site of Little Zion Baptist

Church and Cemetery,” said Bulova, in a re-cent statement. “The presence of thismarker will serve as a way for residents ofFairfax County to actively engage with ourpast. It is an important acknowledgementof the significant ways both African-Ameri-can and religious communities have con-

tributed to our history. The installation ofthis historic marker will bring our commu-nity together by enriching our understand-ing of our shared cultural heritage. It willprovide an opportunity for future genera-tions to learn from, understand, and appre-ciate our past.”

IN HIS STATEMENT, Cook said: “FairfaxCounty has progressed in the last 60 yearsfrom an agricultural landscape to a subur-ban model. As we begin ‘suburban renewal,’it is important to preserve and mark ourhistorical features. What Cora is doing herewith Little Zion Baptist is not only memori-alizing this historic church, but she is cre-ating that link to our past and making surethat as we develop into the Fairfax of thefuture, we remember where we came from.”

My own personal fascination with theLittle Zion Baptist Church began when wehad our house built in 1996 in theEdgewater community. My readings of lo-cal history indicated that the church car-ries a remarkable history about the countywhere it came from and where it is goingas a multicultural megalopolis.

Little Zion Baptist Church also demon-strates the remarkable story of AfricanAmerican faith, hope and generosity. Withfreedom from slavery after the Civil War,Jack and Lizzie Pearson donated land in1876 so that the African American commu-nity could worship and be buried with re-spect. The Pearson couple had also donatedland nearby for a school and as of July 13,our group was still trying to pinpoint theexact location of the Pearson school that wasin operation until 1945.

Commuters have several optionsto get from the suburbs todowntown Washington, D.C.While Burke does not have a

Metro station, a Fairfax Connector bus runsthrough Lake Braddock to the PentagonStation. Slug lines are also available for trav-elers who prefer to car pool. One can alsodrive into the city, if they are able to bravethe traffic. Finally, for those who live fur-ther away from the metropolitan area, thereis the Amtrak train. The Virginia RailwayExpress (VRE) in Burke can get someone toD.C in under 40 minutes.

“I’ve been commuting on the VRE since2003. I used to have to drive at least 20minutes to get to the Vienna Metro. This isjust superior,” said commuter Dale Ericksonof Burke who commutes to Crystal City.

Two VRE stations that offer commuters amore relaxed environment as opposed tothe hustle and bustle of some Metro cars

service the Burke community. The BurkeCentre VRE Station is located just off GuineaRoad at 10399 Premier Court. The RollingRoad Station is located at 9016 Burke Road.

“People are much more relaxed. Yousometimes feel like a milkshake on theMetro with all the screeching. And the rid-

ership is friendly,”said Erickson.

Convenience is keyto many people whocommute to andfrom D.C. The VRE isin a central locationto many people in theBurke and Fairfaxcommunities. “It’s

close to home and in the springtime I canwalk here, which I like. It’s really conve-nient,” said commuter Marina Chu ofFairfax.

A VRE ticket costs $7 and children under10 ride for free when with a paying adult.Special passes are also available for pur-chase. Trains come every 30-45 minutes.

First Line of ContactTo the Editor:

Your locally elected Commissioner of theRevenue is your first line of contact to assistyou with both state and local tax issues. Con-sumer friendly offices are staffed to help bothindividuals and businesses with their real es-tate and personal property taxes, including thepersonal property tax relief program. In manylocalities the commissioner’s office may alsooperate as a DMV office providing a convenientone-stop-shop for both State and local vehiclelicense registration and personal property taxassistance. Commissioners may also providelocal citizens with valuable income tax assis-tance.

Your commissioner also administers taxesadopted by the local governing body for busi-nesses in the areas of license, consumer util-ity, machinery and tool taxes, merchant’s capi-tal taxes and meals, lodging and cigarettestaxes. They also oversee the special tax reliefand land usage programs.

Elected commissioners serve at the pleasureof the voters and are directly accountable toyou, the taxpayers of Virginia. They providefair, equitable and impartial assessment admin-istration of taxes adopted by the local govern-ing body. In so doing, they are part of a vitalsystem of “checks and balances” that ensuresthe confidentially of taxpayer information andthat no one area of government has completetaxing authority over its citizens.

As a Commissioner of the Revenue, I, like so

Economy MostCritical IssueTo the Editor:

From my perspective, the economy is cer-tainly the most critical and volatile issue forFairfax County residents in this election sea-son.

In U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-11), we havean astute manager who understands the com-plexity of the current economy. He supportslegislation and courses of action to help fami-lies in Northern Virginia and spur long-termeconomic recovery. Connolly has demonstratedhe is not afraid to stand up to his own partywhen he thinks it is wrong.

As Connolly bravely pointed out in lastSunday’s Washington Post, fellow Democratsagree on the principle but not the timing ofwhen to allow the Bush tax cuts to expire forthose making over $250,000. Our leaders mustexercise caution with drastic changes affect-ing all economic levels. Small businesses inNorthern Virginia and across the country needprotection and support to get back to what weneed most: creating American jobs. The pre-mature expiration of these tax cuts would placea large, unnecessary burden on small busi-nesses. We need evidence of a robust recoverybefore these tax cuts expire, and we need toappreciate Connolly’s insight and steadfastconcern for job growth. Connolly understandsthe needs of Northern Virginia, and he under-stands that right now we cannot risk slowingeconomic growth. He has a record of puttingsound policy ahead of partisan politics.

many commissioners, believe that there aremore opportunities for the State and local gov-ernments to work together to serve your needsand make the best use of our limited tax re-sources. Two examples would be:

1) Allow for local DMV vehicle regis-tration concurrently with personalproperty registration. Every citizen is re-quired to register their vehicles both locallyand with the state for tax purposes. The infor-mation required for both is nearly identical.Combine the two. Commissioners of the Rev-enue have the ability, the space and the will-ingness to do this while potentially reducingthe total number of DMV employees and al-lowing DMV to focus on the issuance of driv-ers licenses.

2) Allow for local registration of statesales tax concurrently with the localbusiness license. The vast majority of busi-nesses in Virginia are small and locally owned. They are well known to local Commissionersof the Revenue. These businesses should beable to complete all organizational and taxregistration requirements at the local office. This would ensure that all that should be reg-istered are being registered. The Georgia De-partment of Revenue recently discovered, though a joint audit with a local county taxcommissioner, 1,000 businesses that had prop-

erly registered for local businesslicense but had not registeredwith the Georgia Department ofRevenue for Georgia Sales Tax.

According to estimates, in this one countyalone, the loss in state sales tax revenueamounted to $250 million.

Local Commissioners of the Revenue are wellsuited to provide these tax saving measures. We are linked electronically with the state thatassures that taxes due the state accuratelyreach the state. All of this can be completed ina customer friendly manner with real peopleto help you. Visit our offices to see what wecan provide for you.

Accountability NeededTo the Editor:

I was encouraged to read in the Connectionthat Del. Eileen Filler-Corn (D-41) will beknocking on doors and increasing her accessi-bility to voters [“Constituent Service,” Connec-tion, Aug. 19-25, 2010]. This will be an excel-lent opportunity for her constituents to ask herwhy she voted in favor of Obamacare andagainst HB 10 to protect the right of Virgin-ians to refuse to buy Federal government runhealth care insurance. The bill was overwhelm-ingly passed and only a few of her colleaguesin the General Assembly opposed it.

For those who care about Second Amend-ment rights, they should ask Filler-corn for herrationale in opposing HB 934, which alsopassed handily, allowing an individual to havea handgun in a motor vehicle as long as it issecured in a compartment.

For those who favor more educational op-portunities for needy, low income children inpoor performing schools, folks in the 41st Dis-trict many want to know why Filler-corn voted

against HB 1390, providing more flexibility forthe establishment of Charter Schools in Vir-ginia.

Finally, those of us who are disgusted in see-ing abhorrent crimes committed by the samedangerous criminals over and over again, itwould be interesting to hear why Filler-Cornvoted against HB 166, and HB 885 adding firemarshals and other law enforcement officialsto fall under the Commonwealth’s capital mur-der statute, meaning that if criminals kill lawenforcement officers they can be given thedeath penalty. She, like all politicians, will bewell prepared with smooth sounding talkingpoints. It will up to voters to decide if the re-sponses pass the laugh test. Many, perhaps evena majority, of Connection readers will agreewith Filler-corn on these issues. But, that doesnot absolve her from explaining her votes.

Kerry D. BologneseSpringfield

Shed Some LightTo the Editor:

In light of recent revelations of public em-ployees looting the public treasuries of townsand states across the country to pay themselvesridiculously high salaries, it is high time tomake public the salaries of all governmentemployees.

I remember some 15-20 years ago a localpaper printed the salaries and job titles of allFairfax County employees making more than$50,000 a year. The article required an entirepage of fine print to list the thousands of ab-surd, useless, overpaid jobs the Fairfax Countygovernment had devised. In the 20 years sincethen, this farce has grown into a full-fledgedemployment program for bureaucrats.

As the economy struggles to recover from acollapse mostly caused by government, fromthe federal to the municipal level, it is essen-tial that the citizens of this county have a voicein deciding both the number of people to beemployed and the size of their compensation:those who pay the salaries — that is, the tax-payers — ought to decide whom and what theywill pay, an inconvenient truth the bureaucratsand politicians would prefer to forget.

I appeal to the citizens of the Fairfax Countyto support this move to shed light on the mat-ter and correct the many abuses that now per-meate the Fairfax government bureaucracy.

Afraid of Meeting?To the Editor:

I have hunted high and low to find a townhall event planned for my U.S. Rep. GerryConnolly (D-11). It has been all to no avail. This is the election season. This is the Augustrecess when they are supposed to be holdingtown hall events and such.

Congressman Connelly, do your duty. Areyou not aware that we have an alternative in[11th District Candidate] Keith Fimian (R) ifwe feel you are hiding from us? Please don’thide.

Insider’s Guide

The Year the Bruins Almost Stopped a Dynasty

By Rich Sanders

The Connection

The Lake Braddock High footballteam experienced its best-everseason last year when the Bru-ins, under head coach Jim

Poythress, captured the Northern RegionDivision 6 title and ultimately went all theway to the state finals before finally losingto Thomas Dale of Chester.

Over its football history, Lake Braddock, while not ever reaching the success that the2009 Bruins did, has put together some for-midable teams that came close to breakingthrough to greatness. One of those teamswas the 1989 Bruins’ edition which nearlynipped West Potomac’s late ‘80s, early 90sfootball dynasty before it even began.

West Potomac, the route 1 Alexandriaarea school which opened its doors in 1985when former schools Groveton and FortHunt merged, quickly turned into a regionfootball power under head coach Dan Meier, the current head principal at Robinson Sec-ondary.

By 1989, the Wolverines were a legitimatestate force. They had reached the regionfinals the year before and loss to Robinson. But going into the 1989 season, WestPotomac was considered the team to beat.

Indeed, Meier’s squad lived up to thosevast expectations by going 10-0 during theregular season. The Wolverines then wontheir first playoff game, a semifinals victory

over Annandale, to set up a meeting withan underdog Bruins’ team for the Division6 region title.

Lake Braddock, making its first-ever re-gion championship game appearance, hadstormed back from a 21-0 halftime deficitthe week before to defeat the T.C. WilliamsTitans, 22-21, in a semifinals triumph.

THE BRUINS, under head coach FrancisDall, were not about to back down from thepowerful Wolverines. In the first half of theregion finals tilt, played on a Saturday af-ternoon in late November, they built an 8-0-halftime lead and had West Potomac onthe ropes.

But just as T.C. could not hold onto itslarge lead in its semifinals loss to LakeBraddock, the Bruins, in the finals, couldnot hold off West Potomac in the latter halfon way to a 14-8 setback to the Wolverines.

In the region championship game storyas recorded in the Nov. 30, 1989 edition ofthe Mount Vernon Gazette, Dall, who cur-rently serves as the director of student ac-tivities at Westfield High School, said histeam experienced the other side of thingsin the loss to the Wolverines.

“It goes both ways,” said Dall. “[AgainstWest Potomac], they made the plays. In theT.C. game, we made the plays. I thoughtwe played tremendously against WestPotomac. They’re tough all over with fourgood [running] backs and their all-regionlinemen. We weren’t gonna lose it. They had

to do something to win it and they did.”Lake Braddock, in the game’s first half,

had stopped West Potomac scoring oppor-tunities by forcing fumbles at the Bruins’28 and 15 yard lines. Meanwhile, LakeBraddock quarterback Pat Echard hadhooked up with Jeff Almstedt on a 23-yardtouchdown pass play on the final play ofthe first quarter to break a scoreless tie. TheBruins converted a two-point conversionand led 8-0.

Meier, the West Potomac coach, told his

The Connection

One of Robinson High’s great-est baseball seasons everended with a disappointing,

lopsided loss when the Rams fell tothe heavy-hitting Great Bridge Wild-cats (Chesapeake) at the 2003 VirginiaState AAA title game which took placeat Shepherd Stadium in ColonialHeights.

The one-sided championship gamesetback hardly diminished the out-standing spring season it had been forhead coach Bill Evers and his Rams, who ran into a Great Bridge squad thathad ousted defending state championMadison in a semifinals game in simi-lar fashion, 14-0.

The state finals game story, recorded

in the June 12-18, 2003 edition of theFairfax Connection put some perspective onthe Robinson loss.

“The letdown of not winning was tem-pered by the realization of just how good ateam — especially offensively — the cham-pion Wildcats are,” the story read. “GreatBridge, just as it had done against Madi-son, hit the ball all over the ball park againstthe Rams. The Southeastern Region cham-pion Wildcats knocked around 11 hits, in-cluding four extra base hits, to dominatethe title game affair and win their first statecrown in school history.”

Evers, the Rams’ head coach, was im-pressed with the Great Bridge offense.

“They’re as good a hitting team as we’veseen all year,” he said. “They put so muchpressure on you with the bats. You’ve gotto come out and play close to a perfect gameto beat these guys. They really swing the

bat well.”Robinson, competing in its first state

championship game since winning the titleback in 1980, had made it to the finals witha semifinals win over Forest Park (PrinceWilliam), 12-9, four days earlier at Shep-herd Stadium. The finals game againstGreat Bridge had been scheduled for the

following day but rain in the Rich-mond/Colonial Heights area thatweekend had forced three consecu-tive days of the title game being post-poned. The game finally took placeon a gorgeous Tuesday afternoon/

ing on a 10-yard run by Wolverine running backTommy Horne. West Potomac failed on its two-pointconversion play so Lake Braddock still led 8-6.

Lake Braddock came right back on its ensuing pos-session, moving the ball all the way to the WestPotomac 31-yard line. But the Bruins lost possessionwhen they picked up just two yards on a fourth-and-three play.

West Potomac then drove 71 yards on eight plays, scoring the go-ahead touchdown on a one-yard sneakfrom quarterback Matt Lambert, who then passedfor two points on the conversion to give West Potomaca 14-8 lead it would not relinquish.

The key play of the West Potomac drive came whenWolverine back Corey Gay, on a fourth-and-one atthe Bruins’ 47 yard line with nine minutes remain-ing in the final quarter, burst off the right side for 45yards down to the Lake Braddock two yard line to

evening. But as it turned out, about the only thing to effectively

slow down Great Bridge had been the weather. In the titlegame, the Wildcats scored five runs in the top of the secondinning before effectively putting the game away the follow-ing three innings by scoring one, two and four runs to builda 12-3 lead it would never lose.

The highlight of the game for Robinson came when clean-up hitter Andrew Fritz, the Rams’ senior catcher, blasted atwo-run homer over the right center field fence with twoouts in the third inning to get his team within 6-3.

The Rams, which went 22-5, experienced some solaceafterwards, finishing second in the Northern Region to Madi-son and making it all the way to the state championshipgame.

“We got here,” said Robinson senior third baseman MarkGenovese. “Twenty-three years ago was the last time wemade it this far. It was a real good accomplishment. Com-ing into the season we knew we would go far. We wereexpected to be one of the top teams in the region. Thingsworked out good.”

Fritz echoed those sentiments.“When I look back on it, I’ll see it was kind of a cool thing

to have reached the state finals,” he said. “It’s a great expe-rience to be the first team in 23 years to represent Robinsonhere.”

Wiley Lee, the Great Bridge head coach, was gracious invictory.

“Robinson is a great team,” he said. “We were fortunateto take advantage of a couple of their mistakes.”

set up the touchdown.“We really made the play,” said Gay, of the huge

run, afterwards. “It was the 22 counter. I got the balland went through the line. Every time I get the ballI want to make something happen.”

Meier said he never hesitated to go for it on thegame-defining fourth-and-one.

“I felt like, in that situation, we needed to score onthat drive to win the ball game,” he said. “We’d beenrunning an awful lot of sweeps. But then we hadCorey go to the inside. I said on the sideline, ‘If luckis with us, Corey goes.’ He’s the closest thing we haveto a breakaway threat.”

With the loss, Lake Braddock finished the 1988season with an 8-4 record. West Potomac, meanwhile, went on to the state playoffs and ultimately won thestate title with a perfect 14-0 record.

The Wolverines would also go on to win anotherstate crown — that one in Division 5 — the follow-ing year as well.
