Boarding At Burford

Burford School is unique in that it is the only State Boarding School in Oxfordshire and the surrounding area

and it makes our school a very special place! The Boarding House an integral part of the school and is situated at the bottom of the High Street. There are about 100 Boarding Students live in the house which is split into two halves, a girls’ side and a boys’ side.

The students are looked after by a team of staff who also live on-site. There are also extra duty staff who help with activities, trips and the day-to-day organisation of looking after so many students. The boarding

students go out every weekend to places such as the Cinema, Paintballing, Go-Karting and Thorpe Park. One student even keeps her pony at the nearby stables so keeping everyone busy at the weekend is easy!

Boarding students come from all over the world, there are students from places as far afield as America, Mauritius and Hong Kong but also students that live a relatively short distance from school such as Chipping Norton, Oxford or London.

Housemistress

Mrs Kaaber

The Boarding House was the original site of the

Grammar School founded in 1571.

Over the summer, you need to ensure you get the essentials you need for

your first day. Here is a handy checklist.

What Do I Need On My First Day?

Item

Black/Blue Ink Pens (Make sure you buy a few)

HB Pencil

Colouring Pencils

Pencil Case

Ruler

Compass

Protractor

Pencil Sharpener

Rubber

Scientific Calculator

School Bag

These items can be bought from all stationery

shops or supermarkets such as Tesco or

Drama and ICT

In Pairs - Have a conversation where each sentence begins with the next letter of the alphabet.

This may seem difficult at first, but improves with practice. If you get stuck, you can also use sounds to start a sentence, for example ‘Mmmm’ or ‘tut-tut’. Here is an example:

A: Anyone seen my cat? B: Black one, with funny eyes?

A: Can’t say I remember. B: Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten what it looks like?

A: Every cat looks the same to me. B: Fortunately, I found one yesterday

A: Gee, that’s great!

* You could also try beginning somewhere in the middle of the alphabet. Then when you reach ‘Z’, return to ‘A’ until you arrive back where you started .

* Try setting the scene or location before you start.

* It’s great for car journeys too!

Can you give some examples of both

of these?

Important Bits

Here is some useful information and an extra thing you could do over the summer

Entering School

The Main Entrance is at the

front of the school. It is

really important not to be

dropped off here but follow

the one way system around

the side of the school.

The front of school has signs saying ‘One Way’

Timetables

At the start of each year you will be given a timetable that tells you what subject you have each lesson, where

the lesson will be taught and the initials of the teacher who will teach you. You will be expected to copy it into your SRB and to follow it each day.

The Learning Zone

The Learning Zone supports lots students within Year 7 in both an academic and pastoral way. It runs

additional support sessions to help all students achieve their very best. It also offers somewhere quiet at

break and lunchtime for you to go to eat your lunch or access support at the homework club. There are

lots of wonderful Teaching Assistants there to help you, who will also support you in lessons, run the

additional support and help you through the first few weeks of your transition to Burford School.

The timetable you will have is a TWO WEEK timetable where it has a WEEK 1 and a WEEK 2. Each

week will have a different set of lessons so it is really important you are organised with which lessons

you have on each day.

The initials shown on your lessons are the initials of the teachers who will teach you those lessons.
