AT OUR GENERAL MEETINGNEXT MONTH--WE LEARN OF ISSUES IN WORLD TRADE, AND EXIMBANK

Margaret Kahliff, a director on the board of the U.S. Export ImportBank (Eximbank), based in Washington, D~C., will be our league'sprincipal speaker during a noon luncheon on Wednesday, Feb. 20.

That's the day for our general meeting and it will be at the Bath.. and Tennis Club Convention Center. The day begins at 9 a.m. with

specific issues on trade being discussed in workshops, up till lunchtime and· afterward, too, till 3:30 p.m.

Because it feels the issues in world trade are timely and important, the workshops will be put together by the Florida Department of Commerce. At our Jan. 25 general meeting, a workshop schedule and listof panelists and speakers--together with an application--will bedistributed.

Fee for the lunch and full day of seminars will be $8.50.

Ouring_lunqh, Margaret Kahliff will talk about Eximbank's policiesand programs. She is described as a stimulating speaker who received a standing ovation after a speech last spring at the ChicagoWorld Trade Conference, in literature received by our internationalrelations group.,

That group, headed by Ahleen Crawford, and aided by Mary Chenery'sgovernment committee, has been ,researching world trade and willhave more material for you, soon.

A major reason world trade is considered timely: the U.S. currentlybenefits by earning one-eighth of the total $1.3 trillion now seenin world trade. In the last thirty years, the trade has grown ten-fold. .

Ahleen Crawford" reports that last April 12, ninety-nine nationswho'd been meeting in Geneva since 1973, signed an agreement thathopefully improved trade rules set up after World War. II, whichwere called.G.A.T.T. That stands for "Genera.l Agreement on Tariffsand Trade."

The new agreement, which with the ninety-nine nations involves moretha·n 90% of world trade, is called M.T.N. That stands for "Multilateral Trade Negotiat~ons."

The next Voter will have more for you on Margaret Kahliff, more onworld economic issues, and more on the alphabet soup letters involved in ~nderstanding G.A.T.T. AND M.T.N.

THE FARMWORKERS GROUP DIGS INON CHILD LABOR; UPGRADING HOUSINGIN IMMOKALEE; HEALTH CLINICS;MEETS NEXT ON JANUARY 23

The Farmworkers group met from3:30-5 p.m. on Nov. 28, in PhyllisClark's home.

Dorothy Cohen reported that she hasnot yet received governmental material on the role of television as ateaching medium.

Beth Fiske gave a report on childlabor among farmworkers, which maybe seen' elsewhere in this Voter.

Phyllis Clark reported on the tripto Immokalee, where group membersviewed the area that is supposedto be upgraded through a $470,000federal grant. Those who made thetrip questioned the wisdom of spending that amount on such a substandard area--the grant was intended for owner-occupied units only, but there are many rental unitsthere which seem in worse conditionthan those privately owned.

In the viewer's thinking, many ofthe units should be condemned, butthe occupants would have nowhereto go ••• Would trailers be a betteranswer?

Phyllis also reported on a visitthat she and Marilyn Kaufman made

Ms. Abbott said there is no syst7mset up for finding out if all ch11dren are attending school. Herestimate of the number of migrantsin the Naples area was 4,000 to5,000.

After leaving Ms. Abbott, Phyllissaid she and Marilyn visited thetrailer clinic of the Collier CountyHealth Services at West Wind Trailer Park. An incorporated, voluntary clinic, it is headed by TomClark, M.P.H (Master's in PublicHealth) •

Phyllis reported, "App'arently Mr.Clark used to work for the county, but had a disagreement and went outand formed his own .group."

Ms. Abbott said her clinic is opento anyone, but does not have a specific service for farmworkers. The County Health Department has 19employes. Cost of a visit i8.$4,but if clients cannot afford ~t,
