My name is Michael Rivera and I am excited to come to Our Lady of Mercy as the new Music Director. For the past year I was the Music Director at Our Lady of Sorrows and have subbed at OLM from time to time. Before coming to OLM/OLS, I was a Cantor at St. Mary's in Nutley for two years. I have also subbed as organist at St.Mary's and oth-er churches within the Archdiocese of Newark, Diocese of Metuchen, and Diocese of Paterson. I was born in Bayonne in July 1993. My mother, Mer-celita, was born in the Philippines and my father, Hector, was born in Bayonne but is of Puerto Rican descent. Both cultures have lots of similarities (such as great food!) but the biggest one was our Catholic faith. I grew up going to church at Our Lady of Assumption in Bayonne and would sit next to my grandmother in the Spanish choir. From there, my love of music (and learning to sing in both English and Spanish) grew tremendously. I started piano lessons when I was ten years old and took lessons for eight years. In eighth grade my choir teacher had me accompany the choir on piano for our concerts. In high school, I was in both wind ensemble and marching band, where I was co-drum major of the marching band my senior year and was the pianist in the Jazz Band for three years. It was during high school that I began to cantor at OLA. In May of 2012, the Music Director at OLA went on medical leave and I took over as Interim Music Director that summer. It was at this time I learned to play the pipe organ. In September 2012, I started school at Montclair State University. I was actively involved on campus, especially at Newman Catholic Campus Ministry, where I served on the Executive Board for three years. Newman helped me to develop an even closer relationship with God. I graduated from Mont-clair State with my Bachelor of Arts in English in May 2016 and

have since returned to MSU for my Master of Arts in Teaching with a Concentration in Music. I am thrilled to be a part of the OLM family and excited to serve you as your Music Director!

Local Chapter Meeting of Jersey City Together Monday, February 27 at OLM

Jersey City Together (JCT) is a city wide organization made up more than 30 religious communities. JCT is working in several areas to improve life in our city. Those areas include: Policing and Public Safety, Education and Youth, Housing and Homelessness, and the upcoming Property Revaluation. Here in our part of Jersey City we have established the OLM Local Chapter of JCT to address issues of neighborhood concern. Currently, we have been addressing the issue of illegal truck traffic on local roads that are not designed for large commercial vehicles. Thanks to the work of our Local Chapter significant steps have been taken to solve this problem. Many members of OLM and other neighborhood residents have expressed an interest in being part of the Local Chapter of JCT. There will be a meeting of our Local Chapter on Monday, February 27, at 7:30 pm in the Maria Room directly below the church. We encourage you to attend and to invite your neighbors. The Chapter Meeting is open to all those who care about our neighborhood. During the meeting you will hear an update about the work of the Local Chapter and about the city-wide work of JCT. You will also have an opportunity to express your concerns, then together we will decide the next issues we need to address to improve life in our neighborhood.

An Opportunity for All Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

All Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion of our parish are invited to attend a training and updat-ing session sponsored by the Arch-diocesan Office of Divine Worship. It will take place Saturday morning, February 25, at the Archdiocesan Center in Newark. The workshop will cover three areas: The Basis of Litur-gical Ministry; Home and Hospital Visitation; and the Origin and Role of

the Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. This workshop will help those who distribute Holy Commu-nion to improve their ministry and their understanding of the lit-urgy. We encourage all our Extraordinary Ministers who have not attended this workshop in the past to please join us. We will leave OLM for the workshop at 8 am Saturday, February 25, and return by 1 pm. The parish will cover the registration fee. If you are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity, please contact Father Tom by calling the parish office (201-434-7500), sending him at an email ([email protected]), or speaking to him after Mass. Don’t miss this workshop, it will not be repeated until the fall of 2017.
