Dear readers,

It is with great pleasure that we present a new edition of our BulletIN magazine. Nammo’s activities continue to produce interesting and revolutionary solutions in our areas of expertise.

In the first section of this edition, you will find a presentation of our commercial brand activities. Nammo’s commercial brands spans products such as IKAROS for safety at sea and composite structures for clean energy storage, as well as our participation in exciting space programs like Clean Space and SPARTAN, including our hybrid rocket technologies.

In the second section, you can find out more about some of our highly competent test centers. We hope that the selection of centers we have chosen will draw your attention to the different testing capabilities we provide.

Section three focuses on our core military business within ammunition, demilitarization and rocket motor technology. Our goal is to always be at the forefront when it comes to technological performance and user-friendliness. We believe factors like weight, range, accuracy and terminal ballistics should come in an affordable package.

Environmental consideration has also increased within the defense industry. This is important not only for the surrounding environment, but also for the public, our dedicated employees and the final users of our products. By improving the accuracy of our products, we lower the risk of collateral damage, and we can honor our commitment to the company vision of ‘Securing the Future’.

We conclude with an article about our latest acquisitions and future growth. The global market is changing and new business appears, requiring increased attention to different export regulations. As an industrial player within the defense industry, we show responsibility and interest in the national laws and regulations in all the countries we are located in.

Nammo’s social responsibility covers our interest in people, the environment and society. One of the Group’s main strategies related to social responsibilities has been to focus on projects that increase the interest of technology and education within science and engineering for young people. The Group’s participation in the UK-based BLOODHOUND SSC Project is a perfect fit for this strategy. The mission of the project is to inspire future generations to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics by showcasing these subjects in exciting ways in schools and universities.

For the last three years Nammo has been involved in the multinational SPARTAN project, to develop and demonstrate a throttleable hybrid rocket engine for spacecraft lander applications such as ‘Moonlander’. The SPARTAN project is funded by the European Union through the Seventh Framework Program, FP7. In total, eight partners from six different European countries (Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and Norway) were involved. The program was led by the Italian-based company Thales Alenia Space.

Nammo’s primary contribution to the program was to develop a highly efficient hybrid rocket engine that could be throttled over a 10:1 range. In addition to this, Nammo carried out all the complex static and dynamic testing of the lander.

MEETING GOALS

Not only was the program a success in terms of meeting its primary goal, but it also achieved a number of other important firsts. With a small but dedicated team of engineers, Nammo managed – in record time – to design and build a flight-weight hybrid rocket engine that could be throttled on demand over a large range of thrust levels. This was done while still maintaining excellent combustion efficiency and engine performance. In addition, four of these motors needed to be controlled simultaneously in order to make it possible for the lander to achieve a soft arrival on the surface of a planet.

The propulsion technology behind this success was originally demonstrated under a European Space Agency (ESA) funded maturation program between 2011 and 2012. A hybrid rocket motor

uses a liquid oxidizer which burns solid, rubber-based fuel. Nammo utilizes hydrogen peroxide at 87.5 percent concentration as the liquid oxidizer, and a synthetic rubber called HTPB, as the fuel. This is the same hybrid propulsion technology behind Nammo’s other successful programs demonstrating large-scale hybrid rocket engines, such as for the North Star sounding rockets and BLOODHOUND SSC.

The SPARTAN program was the first project to successfully demonstrate the functioning of four independently controlled hybrid rocket engines in a system context. The capability of the system was demonstrated at Nammo’s test center using a specially designed vertical structure. A six degrees of freedom dynamometer was used, which measures thrust and momentum in all directions during a test firing of the system. In the final test, the lander was asked to perform a complete duty cycle of the system, simulating a landing of the spacecraft on the surface of a planet. The original plans also called for the demonstration of an autonomous take-off and hovering flight procedure. The tight budget available for all the partners involved allowed for only one attempt to achieve this. Unfortunately, component failure made this test only a partial success.

THE NEXT STEPS

Besides this little setback, this ambitious technology program represented a significant leap forward for Nammo and for most of the other partners. Several challenging technologies were successfully developed from scratch. The program is soon to end, but there are already plans for a continuation.

During a routine flight, Major Frank Biancardi II and his crew experienced a malfunction onboard their B-1 Bomber aircraft. This set off several explosions while midair.

Major Biancardi, who piloted the aircraft, and the three crew members onboard successfully initiated the ACES II ejection seat and were able to evacuate the aircraft. Nammo Talley manufactures the Bottom Bailout Rocket Motor, the Veneer Rocket (SSRM) motor, the CKU-5 Catapult as well as the Trajectory Divergence Rocket Motor (TDRM) for the ACES II seat.

LIFE OR DEATH

Listening to Major Biancardi serves as a clear reminder that there are real people with families who rely on Nammo products during life or death situations. Biancardi described the components inside the ACES II seat as: "A thousand separate miracles, the thousand miracles of life.” He went on to say that: "Every single part of the [manufacturing] process is absolutely necessary and I can’t thank each [Nammo] individual enough for working hard to make sure the components work every time because it is so very important. It’s my last opportunity to live.”

Biancardi has a wife and two-year-old son. He is a 2005 graduate of the United States Air Force flight training school. He has logged over 2,000 flying hours in the B-1 Bomber with the majority of those hours earned in combat. Biancardi noted that the day of the accident began ordinarily enough, the skies were clear and visibility was unobstructed; all indications that conditions were optimal to conduct the training mission. “I can’t thank each [Nammo]

UNFORTUNATE EvENTS

Shortly into the flight a series of unfortunate events led to a wayward part puncturing the fuel line and spilling 7,000 lbs of fuel into the cavity of the left wing. The fuel eventually made contact with a hot duct, igniting a fire and causing several explosions. When Biancardi lost all power to control the aircraft the order was given to eject. The entire event from the initial explosion to ejection lasted 90 seconds.

Throughout the interview Biancardi declared his immense gratitude for the Nammo components that played a role in saving his life. Four people with families survived that day: “I will be forever grateful,” he said.

Tell us about your background and experience I did a math degree at university, and was very lucky to be sponsored by the military and the Royal Air Force throughout, so I did a bit of flying. After graduating, I had a guaranteed job offer to go to, so I joined their pilot training program and had a career flying jet fighters – Phantoms and Tornadoes. I now work in headquarters.

How did you get into setting speed records?I saw a newspaper article in June 1994, talking about a new land speed record project called Thrust, which was going to try to build the world’s first supersonic car. I was fascinated by the technology and the challenge. I also got involved with Richard Noble’s land speed record project. When they launched this idea, to build a supersonic car, they weren’t only looking for technical support, but also someone to drive it.

What pushes you to break these barriers and drive at such speeds?Learning how to run these sorts of programs is very interesting, and being able to share the process with some of the world’s best engineers is a huge privilege – it’s fascinating.

How do you prepare yourself mentally and physically for a drive? Well, join the Royal Air Force for a career, and better still, break the land speed record! It’s a whole range of different things, so it’s a matter of continuously maintaining those skills.

Can you describe what it’s like driving at the speeds you do? A lot of it, the noise, the acceleration, the speed and some of the vibration is like flying a jet fighter – although unless you’ve flown jet fighters, it probably doesn’t explain very much! Exactly what the BLOODHOUND supersonic car (SSC) is going to be like, we don’t know. We’re streaming live videos so you’ll be able to experience it at the same time as I do.

What factors contribute in terms of safety when going this fast? you need to look at each bit of the car in turn and ask whether we can survive this, will the car still stop safely, and will it stop before the end of the track? If yes, then great, but if no, then we have to find a better solution. It’s all about building in layers of safety.

What are your thoughts about using a hybrid rocket motor from Nammo in the car?We’re looking at the biggest percentage increase in land speed record history in the supersonic region. Only one car has ever been supersonic and it went supersonic by 30 km/h – now we’re going to 1,600 km/h. It’s a massive jump, and that performance gap exists because of Nammo technology. The fact it’s hybrid means we can do it with a level of safety that hasn’t been available before, so in terms of perfect partners I wouldn’t want to be doing it any other way.

How would you describe Nammo’s role in the project? In terms of major technical challenges to the program, the biggest single concern has been the rocket: if anything was going to make us fail, it was likely to be that. Thanks to Nammo, what would have taken a long time and could have easily failed is being delivered. I’m pretty certain that the difference between success and failure with BLOODHOUND is down to Nammo’s involvement.

What do you think the limit for speed records on land for supersonic cars is?7 years ago when we started this program, the answer turned out to be just over 1,600 km/h, after doing our calculations and sums, and that’s not the absolute limit – but 10 km/h faster would be catastrophic. That’s the limit with a safety margin. Is somebody going to produce a much faster car next year? Even we’d struggle to do

that, and we’ve got more expertise in this team than probably any other team put together. It’s going to be a very long time before anybody breaks our record because of the sheer challenge of what we’re doing.

Do you have plans to break more records in the future?I will definitely be retiring after the BLOODHOUND project. I’ve got lots of other things to do, including spending more time sailing and also with my wife, as she has effectively been a land speed widow for the last few years!

What is the main purpose of the BLOODHOUND Project? Project BLOODHOUND is creating the world’s most remarkable and highest ever performance straight-line racing car, and while doing so, we are sharing the adventure with a global audience. We’re going to conduct the biggest engineering experiment in history and bring science and

technology to life in real-time as we’re doing it for the largest audience yet.

The strategic legacy of the BLOODHOUND and the main deliverable for this project is inspiring and creating future scientists and engineers. We’re very lucky to be working with an amazing group of partners, from not only our main sponsors with their own educational programs but with the British Government, and of course with international partners like Nammo, to help us reach this audience.

The next generation of engineers are currently at school, and if they aren’t excited about science and technology then collectively we have a problem. We're addressing that problem by getting them excited with the most amazing race car in history, which is the BLOODHOUND.

The BLOODHOUND SSC Project is Britain’s latest attempt at the World Land Speed Record with a car capable of 1,000 mph (1,609 km/h). The project will inspire future generations to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics – showcasing these subjects in the most exciting way possible in schools, colleges and universities.

Nammo’s role in the project is to supply the hybrid rocket technology for the BLOODHOUND SSC, which is currently being constructed in Bristol, UK.

WHAT IS CLEAN SPACE?

Clean Space is an initiative from the European Space Agency (ESA), to reduce the burden on the environment of all space-related activities. This involves not only the launching of rockets, but also the environmental effects of the manufacturing of rockets and satellites, including an eco-friendly approach to doing business in general. The successful completion of this project demands that more attention is paid to the removal of satellites after they have stopped working or are becoming too old.

NASA estimates that about 500,000 objects of space garbage are currently circling the earth. Space debris is already a major risk to space missions. An object with a size of just 1 cm can represent the energy of an exploding hand-grenade when impacting a satellite. Every new collision will subsequently produce new objects flying uncontrolled around the earth and each of these can potentially create a new collision in the future. If current trends continue, this problem is soon going to get out of control and future space missions might become impossible, due to the risk of a collision with space debris being too high.

New requirements to mitigate the production of fresh space debris are needed, and these will require future satellites to remove themselves from space by returning to earth and burning themselves up in the atmosphere upon re-entry.

DE-ORbITING ROCkET MOTORS FROM NAMMO

Nammo has been asked by ESA to develop small solid rocket motors which can push a de-commissioned satellite out of its orbit back towards earth. The first contract is to develop a very slow burning propellant for these motors because if the motor burns too fast, antennas and solar panels could break off the satellite and new debris would be created.

The concept will be based on a series of small rocket motors which will burn one after the other, potentially in pairs of two, allowing control of the direction of the moving satellite. Smaller satellites will only require two to four of these motors, though larger ones will require up to eight. Because these motors have to stay onboard for the duration of the satellite’s lifetime before they operate, their properties should be very stable over time and they also have to be protected against cosmic radiation. This is a new field for ESA as well as Nammo, and the propellant will have to be tested before and after exposure to the simulated environment in space.

After a suitable propellant has been selected, the plan is to build and evaluate three test motors to demonstrate the performance. Nammo has already submitted an offer to ESA for this work, but the contract has not been awarded yet.

NAMMO COMPOSITE SOLUTIONS (CS) PRODUCES INNOvATIvE COMPOSITE STRUCTURES TO SUPPORT NEXT GENERATION CLEAN ENERGy STORAGE

In addition to growth of our heritage aerospace business, Nammo CS has an expanding customer base in markets such as energy, industrial, and consumer recreational products. One interesting opportunity is the production of flywheel rims for a novel clean energy storage facility.

Nammo CS recently completed a flywheel manufacturing build to support the installation of Beacon Power’s latest energy storage plant in Hazle Township, PA (USA).

Salt Lake City plant in Utah, USA. The cylinders are nearly 1 m in diameter and 1.5 m long, and are manufactured using carbon fiber, fiberglass and epoxy.

Beacon Power’s 20 MW advanced flywheel energy storage plant in Pennsylvania is one of the largest energy storage facilities currently operating in North America. It deploys 200 high-speed flywheels to store energy and supply fast-response ancillary services to the Pennsylvania grid with no direct fuel consumption and zero emissions.

Flywheel energy storage works by spinning the composite rim or flywheel at very high speeds and preserving the energy in the structure as rotational or kinetic energy. It acts like a mechanical battery, spinning at high speed to store energy. When discharged, the inertial energy of the rotor creates electricity that is then supplied back into the grid. To achieve high efficiency, the flywheel is sealed in a vacuum chamber while levitated with magnets at speeds reaching as high as 16,000 rpm.

Beacon Power's flywheel storage provides reliable and cost-effective solutions to intermittency issues associated with renewable power, for example, the unpredictability of wind or solar power generation. The storage increases the amount of wind and solar power that can be integrated and utilized, thereby reducing overall system fuel consumption.

The Nammo CS unit started in 1991 as a small business with a strong presence in consumer recreational products and industrial markets. In today’s connected world, competition in these arenas is on a global scale. Despite an extremely competitive market, the commercial side of the business has experienced significant growth as a result of the interesting and innovative clean energy projects. Diverse opportunities such as these reflect the entrepreneurial spirit of the Salt Lake City site.

During the 1880s in Gothenburg, a young man called Carl Robert Hansson had been studying and admiring the firework shows in Gothenburg arranged by the artillery school. In 1887, after having made firework articles on a small scale, and after having returned from a three-month practice at James Pain & Son in London, he finally started his own firework business, the Hanssons Pyrotekniska.

While fireworks were the primary basis of the business, it soon expanded to become a skilled and reliable manufacturer of ship signals like ‘blue lights’ – a white signal flare. The product range was extensive and by the beginning of the 1920s, the company was producing all types of signals available on the market at that time, such as parachute rockets, blue and red lights, flare gun ammunition and lifebuoy lights.

THE IkAROS SEA SAFETy PRODUCTS ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF NAMMO'S COMMERCIAL MARkET, AND ARE PRODUCED AT NAMMO LIAb IN LINDESbERG, SWEDEN

These pyrotechnic life-saving appliances are mandatory equipment on civil merchant and military vessels according to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). Stowed on board and in life rafts, these products are also used by leisure boats worldwide. IKAROS products are sold and installed throughout a global distribution net.

In 1959, a product was launched that would lay the foundation for Hansson PyroTech’s position as the world’s leading manufacturer of pyrotechnic distress equipment for use at sea – the IKAROS parachute signal rocket. This easy-to-use rocket technology revolutionized the market and the new IKAROS concept set the standard for hand-fired rockets all around the world.

In 1998, Hansson PyroTech AB became part of Nammo. The fireworks business was split off and the distress signal production was moved to Nammo LIAB in Lindesberg, situated about two hours west of Stockholm.

At the Lindesberg site, production was optimized through a larger degree of automation, and quality was further improved thanks to a combination of research, development and better quality management.

Costs were cut through developing more robust pyrotechnic formulas, whereby more cost efficient grades of chemicals could be introduced without sacrificing proper performance. Metal parts were changed for plastic where possible and expensive machined parts were in many cases changed for pressed metal parts.

INCREASING SAFETy

The ongoing strengthening of laws and regulations connected to environmental issues has not adversely affected the sea safety products, since internal focus has always been to keep the products’ chemical content as safe, non-irritating and non-toxic as possible.

A significant amount of work has been done to improve workplace safety. Primarily, this has occurred by reducing the openly exposed amounts of live pyrotechnic material to the operator, but also through more innovative ideas, such as trying out suitable sprinkler head combinations for the fighting of magnesium-based fires.

WINNING AMMUNITION IS PUT TO AN ICy TEST IN THE NAMMO .22 SERvICE CENTER

Since 2004, Nammo has offered all biathlon athletes the opportunity to test their own weapons under Arctic conditions, in temperatures of around -25 degrees at the cooling chamber in Germany.

Thanks to this, all athletes have the chance to find the best ammo type and batch for their rifles. Located in the middle of Europe, the .22 Rimfire Service Center is equipped with the world’s best testing software, providing realistic shooting situations to all biathletes, as well as sport shooters. The center is also able to test all .22 weapons in different conditions. During the upcoming season, more than 20 biathlon national teams will take advantage of this opportunity in order to select the best ammunition for over 230 rifles.

PROvEN SUCCESS

The competition ammo, Lapua Polar Biathlon, is used by biathletes all around the world, with 93 percent using it while competing at different World Cups and the Sochi Olympic Games. 32 of the 33 medals awarded during the 2014 Olympic Games were won by athletes using ammunition selected and produced in Schönebeck.

Nammo owns and operates the 400 hectare Nammo Raufoss Test Center, Norway, that performs development, qualification, production and LAT testing for Nammo. In addition, the test center provides a wide range of services for other Nammo sites, the military and governments, plus defense and commercial industries. Extensive test and evaluation capabilities include live fire and environmental and safety testing according to international standards such as MIL-STD-810/331 and 2105.

The test center is now recognized as the largest testing laboratory in Norway. It is a certified NATO National Test Center and Nammo s only fully equipped test facility.

NAMMO MARkS A NEW ERA IN THE EvOLUTION OF HybRID ROCkET MOTORS WITH THE SUCCESSFUL TEST FIRING OF THEIR LARGE HybRID ROCkET MOTOR AND THE INAUGURATION OF A NEW PURPOSE-bUILT TEST FACILITy

On October 7, 2014, Nammo passed a historical milestone by successfully firing a large hybrid rocket motor. This was the first in a series of hybrid rocket motors that Nammo has been developing. This test also inaugurated Nammo’s brand new test facility for Green Propulsion at its test center for rocket motors in Raufoss, Norway. This purpose-built test facility will accelerate Nammo’s development of environmentally friendly rockets for atmospheric research and space applications. The facility is unique in Europe both in terms of its size and its capabilities.

THE LATEST IN HybRID TECHNOLOGy

The design of the tested motor represents the latest stage in the

evolution of hybrid rocket motor technology, and strengthens Nammo’s leading position. Nammo’s hybrid technology is based on a rocket propellant combination of hydrogen peroxide as the oxidizer and synthetic rubber as the fuel. Hybrid rockets are a safe, controllable, low-cost and green alternative for rocket propulsion.

The test firing of the rocket was an unprecedented success. The firing lasted for a predefined 10 seconds, producing a maximum thrust of 30 kN (or 3 tons). The engine started instantly after ignition and the firing was terminated in a controlled manner by closing the main oxidizer valve. A full burn would normally have lasted 25 seconds, but on this occasion the test was terminated mid-way through in order to complete a full inspection. Full integrity of the motor was conserved, meaning that the engine could have been started again to burn for the remaining 15 seconds, if so desired.

THE FIRING LASTED FOR A PREDEFINED 10 SECONDS, PRODUCING A MAXIMUM THRUST OF 30 kN (OR 3 TONS)

A PROMISING FUTURENammo’s work with hybrid technology has been supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) since 2010, notably under its Future Launchers Preparatory Programme (FLPP). Nammo’s work is a perfect fit for ESA’s objective to foster new and promising technologies for future European launchers and to include green propulsion solutions in their existing systems.

The hybrid rocket motor tested on October 7 is not only interesting from a new technology development perspective, it is also the first building block for the North Star Rocket Family. This family of affordable sounding rockets and small launchers has been developed to launch small satellites into orbit from Andøya Space Center in Northern Norway. The same motor will also be used to power the BLOODHOUND SSC in its attempt to achieve a new land speed record of 1,000 mph in 2016 (see page 6).

The program was completed in january 2015, one month ahead of schedule. It was without incident and within the budget.

Previous issues of BulletIN have covered the requirements of cluster munition disposal, with 2012’s edition containing news of Nammo’s procurement of a Demil contract with Japan. A great challenge for Nammo, this contract has progressed over the last two years, with a report of what has happened listed here.

After some initial delays when beginning the contract, progress has been excellent, with the first shipment of cluster munitions arriving at Emden port, Germany in June 2013 from Japan.

Due to the type of munitions requiring destruction, production was scheduled to take place at Nammo Buck, located in Pinnow, Germany and Nammo NAD in Løkken Verk, Norway.

The center opened in 2012 on the Nammo campus in Mesa, Arizona and was modeled on the Nammo test facility in Schönebeck, Germany, but was expanded to allow for simultaneous testing at both 50 and 100 m. In the US, shooters often compete at the longer 100 m distance. For that reason, the expanded range capability of the center is the ideal way to determine which lot of ammunition performs best at both long and short ranges.

In general, rifles or barreled actions can be installed on custom action blocks and then mounted on a return to battery machine rest. All firing is done in an indoor climate-controlled environment to avoid the extreme conditions of the Arizona desert. This also eliminates the variables associated with outdoor testing, such as shooter fatigue or error.

Using the Meyton Elektronik Ballistic Manager, group size is measured within 1/100th of a millimeter. Velocity is measured by a PACT infrared chronograph system employing a blast shield to ensure correct speed measurements.

Testing normally takes two to four hours for each customer, depending on the number of lots being evaluated. The number of rounds fired will vary from one lot to another, with the more promising lots being tested again to verify their superiority in the individual’s rifle. In this way, we can match the best ammunition to the customer’s particular rifle, providing the ultimate experience in competitive performance.

REMOTE CAPAbILITy

In another unique capability of the Mesa Rimfire Test Center, rifles (or barreled actions) can be shipped to us for testing with the results emailed back to the sender. This allows the shooter to participate in the testing by seeing the actual targets being fired and selecting one or more lots based on those groups in real time, but without the need to be on site.

The selected ammunition may then be purchased through the customer’s usual supplier or directly through the Lapua Service Center and shipped to the customer.

IN NOvEMbER 2014 NAMMO SUCCESSFULLy COMPLETED THE 25 MM PGU-47/U APEX FINAL DESIGN REvIEW (FDR), AND SIGNED A CONTRACT WITH THE NORWEGIAN ARMED FORCES TO PREPARE FOR THE INTEGRATION OF APEX ON THE F-35A

The goal of the Flight Integration Phase is to get the APEX flight certified and integrated for use on the F-35 aircraft.

When Nammo signed the contract with the Norwegian Armed Forces for the Flight Integration of APEX in the F-35A Program, the integration activities were already well underway. The integration activities consists of two main parts. Firstly, tests and analysis are conducted in order to get flight approval on the F-35A from the

Non-Nuclear Munition Safety Board (NNMSB). Secondly, a Live Fire Testing and Evaluation (LFT&E) program has been put in place in order to determine the effectiveness of the round at different targets in a given scenario.

The US Navy is performing a delta qualification for the F-35B and C versions, and Nammo will assist in the work of getting flight approval by the Weapon System Explosives Safety Review Board (WSESRB) for the F-35B and C versions.

The APEX has already been presented in introductory reviews at both the NNMSB and the WSESRB.

In June 2014, Nammo conducted a comprehensive Terminal Ballistic testing program at Nammo’s test center in Raufoss. The Terminal Ballistic test is part of the LFT&E activities, from where the data will be used for the Mission Planning System.

33 APEX rounds were fired at technical armor, steel and aluminum targets, with impact velocities corresponding to both air-to-ground and air-to-air engagement. The fragments were captured in recovery bundles and the velocity, direction and mass of almost all the fragments were registered.

Following the Terminal Ballistic test, the APEX will be tested on real targets in 2015. This testing will be conducted at Eglin Air Force Base in the US, and the targets include a BMP1, an AH-1 Cobra helicopter, an A-7D Corsair aircraft, a CG-41 patrol boat and a Toyota pickup truck.

The latest capability improvement to the M72 LAW family provides operators with the ability to safely fire a large caliber, high explosive warhead from the cover of small buildings or structures found on the urban battlefield. The M72 Fire-From-Enclosure (M72 FFE) system, designed and developed by Nammo, dramatically reduces the audible sound levels of the weapon system by over 50 percent compared to existing weapons in production today. As a result, weapon back blast, firing flash, and audible signature are greatly reduced without compromising the compact size or low system weight of the traditional rocket propelled systems.

The FFE propulsion system replaces the traditional rocket motor found on the M72 today and by utilizing a countermass, offers recoil-less operation with a dramatically reduced back blast. As a result, soldiers are now able to fire the weapon while behind protective cover inside the rooms of a building or a small structure. The M72 FFE night visible signature is greatly reduced, to levels comparable to normal small arms. When combined, all improvements increase operator safety and survival.

ACCURACy AND SPEED

M72 FFE adopts proven features of the new M72 launcher now entering NATO service. An inline trigger improves gunner aiming accuracy and results in higher probability of first round target hit. Carbon fiber launch tubes reduce weight, and shoot-through tube end seals mean faster target engagement times. Additional enhancements include a combat-proven modern dual safe fuze, an IR or visible laser sight to improve first shot accuracy and night operation, as well as improved ballistics.

Nammo Lapua has developed the .338 Lapua Magnum since the 1980s, and this caliber has become the backbone of sniper systems in many countries. The .338 Lapua Magnum fills the ballistic gap between the 7.62/.308 Win and .50 cal systems. Still, the rifle system weight is closer to .308 Win systems, but the effective range is closer to the .50 BMG. One of the core businesses for Nammo is being the best supplier of rocket motors to the US and European aerospace and missile industries. Nammo has over 30 years of experience with HTPB propellants and over 20 years with HTPE propellants, which continue to be the main propellants for tactical applications. The division has delivered over 50,000 rocket motors to date.

As a leader in the industry, Nammo has invested heavily in the development of the next generation of propellants. After 20 years of research and development, a breakthrough came in 2011 in the form of a GAP-based product classified to STANAG 6016 AA smokeless propellant. This product is now close to becoming part of a new rocket motor for a European customer. It is the only propellant that met the customer’s requirements, giving Nammo an advantage over its competitors.

Vihtavuori products range from small caliber propellants to premium propellants

The Vihtavuori industrial site is home to operations for Nammo Vihtavuori Oy Propellant Plant, Nammo Lapua Oy Vihtavuori Plant and Forcit Oy. The building project for the site was originally accepted by the Finnish government in 1922, with the first propellant being produced in 1926.

Nammo purchased the Vihtavuori propellant plant from Eurenco in January 2014, saving the site from closure. This marked a fresh start for the factory, and a roughly EUR 10 million investment between 2014 and 2017 will go towards updating the factory’s controlling systems and improving the site’s safety, usability and capacity. One of the first changes has been to introduce a new energy solution, shifting the site from being 100 percent dependent on oil to using 95 percent local fuels. This will offer a more secure fuel supply and also bring significant energy savings and lower CO2 emissions in the future.

WORLD-CLASS PRODUCTS

Vihtavuori small caliber (SC) propellants come in three different series: N100, N300/3N and N500. The N100 offers traditional single base propellants for rifle calibers, while the N300/3N provides porous single-base propellants and precise measuring capability for pistol cartridges,

rimfire ammunition and shotgun shells. The N500 series consists of special high-energy rifle propellants enhanced with nitroglycerin for extra ballistic performance. All of these are suitable for use at SC military applications – Vihtavuori SC propellants are STANAG 4170 certified.

All of the propellants manufactured at Vihtavuori meet the strict requirements of both commercial and military needs. For medium and large caliber military applications, Vihtavuori has a wide range of premium propellants, from 20 mm to 155 mm caliber. The site produces special ignition propellants (CBI, porous strands) to be used in tank, field and naval artillery ammunition, as well as manufacturing high quality nitrocellulose, nitrated oils, ether and various double-base premix pastes to be sold as raw materials for double and multi-base propellant production.

The future looks promising for Nammo Vihtavuori Oy, with finances improving and several R&D projects having been started recently with the aim of creating new products and further developing existing ones.

NAMMO’S EXPANSION INTO THE MIDDLE EAST IS ALMOST COMPLETE

A long awaited process to set up a Nammo branch office in Abu Dhabi is coming close to being finalized. Nammo has made the decision to set up this office to cover the Middle East. The aim is to assist all Nammo business units with sales of both military and commercial products to the United Arab Emirates and the rest of the region.

The opening of this office means that there will be someone on the ground to support all business units.

Nammo's customers in the Middle East region are of great importance. With this office, Nammo can be continuously present and in regular contact with its customers. This establishment emphasizes Nammo's aim to never underestimate the importance of personal contact.

The target is to have the Abu Dhabi office in operation before the IDEX Exhibition in February 2015.
