Our annual summer party in the roof garden was a beautiful evening of food, wine and good company.

Dear Members,

Where did the summer go? I hope you all enjoyed your fair share of lazy days, beach outings, baseball games and Harvard Club events. Have you noticed that the Harvard Club has introduced a number of

new and different events in the past year, and increased the number of complimentary events? One of my recent favorites was the Battle of the Harvard Club Chefs. Over 100 Club members were there to sample the sumptuous dishes created by our talented chefs, and there was a great sense of community in Harvard Hall as we cheered them on!

Please save the date of November 4 for our second annual Harvard Club Member Gala. It promises to be a fabulous evening when we can all gather at the Club and celebrate with new friends and old. The theme this year is inspired by James Bond – we’re calling it Skyball, and we’d love to see you in your black tie and fancy dresses. We’ll also have many other wonderful events, including an Evening with Greg Norman, professional golfer and entrepreneur; a Fall Cider Dinner, the Bel Canto opera, and a “superhero training” breakfast for the kids – truly something for everyone.

As we begin yet another fiscal year, I want to thank the Club staff and management team for all their hard work and superior attentiveness. There is a growing sense of comradery at the Harvard Club these days. I encourage you to share this with family and friends, and I look forward to seeing you soon.

GENERAL MANAGER’S LETTER

Dear Members,

I wanted to inform you that our Downtown Chef, Jason Banusiewicz, has recently left the Club to serve as Executive Chef of the University Club of Boston. While we are sad to see Jason leave, we are all very

happy for him in his new venture. We recently hired Burt Jenness as his replacement and I invite you to see “Chef’s Corner” on page 17 to learn more about Burt. I have had the pleasure of working with Burt in the past and he is an outstanding culinarian.

Kevin Wong, our Back Bay Club Food and Beverage Manager, has also joined the University Club of Boston. We wish Kevin well in his new position. Kevin started here as a bartender and we are proud of the progress he has made. His replacement, Samir Bichara, joined us in August. Samir was previously the Food and Beverage Director at the Boston College Club since 2011. We look forward to his years of experience, which includes a Court of Master Sommelier – Level 1.

Summer renovations included a men’s locker room project to replace some plumbing fixtures, a more open seating area, and a fresh coat of paint. Special thanks to Athletics Chair Marcus DeFlorimonte and Facilities Manager Glen Ballard and his dedicated team.

I am pleased to report that Club is on pace to surpass its FY2017 financial goals. While the year started out slow from a revenue standpoint, we were able to control costs. As revenues have improved (starting in February), we have had six straight months of exceeding bottom line net income. Please join me in thanking the entire management team for their flexibility and dedication in delivering positive financial results.

Equinox, the high-performance lifestyle leader, will be back to join us for a Sunset Vinyasa Yoga class. Vinyasa Yoga is an athletic approach to yoga characterized by flowing poses and sequences that are linked to the breath.

Danielle Allen, James Bryant Conant University Professor at Harvard University, and Director of Harvard’s Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics, is a political theorist published in democratic theory, political sociology, and the history of political thought. Allen has written several books. Her recent publication–Cuz: The Life and Times of Michael A., is a powerful memoir revolving around her cousin.

Allen is the principal investigator for the Democratic Knowledge Project, a distributed research and action lab at Harvard University. The Democratic Knowledge Project seeks to identify and disseminate the bodies of knowledge, skills, and capacities that citizens need to succeed at operating their democracy.

In his lecture to the Harvard MBA Class of 2015, Mihir A. Desai took up the cause of restoring humanity to finance. His lecture drew upon a rich knowledge of literature, film, history,

and philosophy to explain the inner workings of finance in a manner that has never been seen before.

In his book, The Wisdom of Finance, his exploration of the ideas of finance is shown through the prism of the humanities. Desai shows that outsiders can access the underlying ideas easily and insiders can reacquaint themselves with the core humanity of their profession.

Mihir A. Desai is the Mizuho Financial Group Professor of Finance at Harvard Business School and a Professor of Law at Harvard Law School.

Michael SewardMember Since 2011, Michael W. Seward is a first-year medical student at Harvard Medical School. He graduated from Harvard College in 2015 where he played on the Harvard varsity hockey team, concentrated in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and chaired the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Seward conducted a university-wide traffic-light food labeling study to test the effect of labeling on college student eating behaviors. He is currently focused on obesity prevention research at the Department of Population Medicine at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Harvard Medical School.

Hannah ParkMember since 2013, Hannah C. Park manages people operations for Curriculum Associates, one of the country’s fastest-growing education companies. Her work involves creating and executing CA’s strategic vision for learning and development, employee engagement and workplace culture. Hannah also serves as a Director for the Harvard Alumni Association. She attended Harvard College, where she met her husband, Jonathan, during their freshman year. The Parks were married at the Harvard Club in 2016.

Monday, August 21, was a day to remember, not only for the solar eclipse, but also for our Battle of the Chefs event in Harvard Hall. Chef Adam Burnham, of our Back Bay Clubhouse Veritas restaurant, was our winner, by a margain of only one vote. His English pea panna cotta was topped

with succulent yuzu marinated crab meat, spiced pistachios and a homemade maple sesame cracker. We had many members in attendance who would like to see this added to the Veritas menu.

Thank you to all our members who came out to support our culinary team, and of course, the chefs for their hard work.

The Annual Robert Banker Cup Doubles Tournament begins this year on Tuesday, September 12. The Banker Cup tournament honors the many years of service our fellow member and friend Robert Banker has devoted to the Club – particularly his leadership of the Doubles Squash Program. A Harvard Club signature event, women and men of all levels are encouraged to participate.

Our squash pro, Sharon Bradey, with assistance from the Club’s Tournament Committee, will pair players for evenly matched teams. Individual matches will be self-scheduled. We will kick off the tournament with an exhibition match on Friday, September 12, at 6 pm.

The Robert Banker Cup Doubles Tournament has become a popular kickoff to the squash season and we are proud to be celebrating our 11th year. Sign-up sheets will be posted in the squash lobby and the locker rooms. We hope you will join us on the courts.Registration starts August 15 and will close on September 3.

Finals will take place on November 19.

This event is hosted by Harvard University and the Harvard Stem

With more than 119,000 adults and children hoping for a life-saving organ on the national transplant waiting list, and only 15,000 organ donors in a given year, the US suffers from a donor organ shortage. All the while, those fortunate enough to receive an organ transplant may have to fight against their own bodies, which often reject the new organ as a foreign object. Now, breakthroughs in gene-editing, 3D bioprinting, xenotransplantation, and de- & re-cellularizing “bioartificial” organs offer a glimpse of a future in which a steady and reliable supply of immune-matched organs may be possible. CHEF’S CORNER

We welcomed Executive Chef Burt Jenness to the Downtown Clubhouse in July. A Massachusetts native, he grew up on the shores of Plymouth, where he developed his love of fresh New England seafood. Burt makes it a priority to use quality fresh seafood and produce from local farms.

Chef Burt began cooking at the age of 14 and attended the College of Culinary Arts at Johnson & Wales University. After graduation, he apprenticed at the Park Plaza Hotel for eight years and then went on to travel throughout the United States, as well as St. John and St. Croix, of the US Virgin islands and Virgin Gorda of the British Virgin Islands, working alongside well established chefs learning the art of Japanese cooking and French cuisine.

After refining his culinary skills he met and teamed up with the Club’s

Executive Chef Dean Moore. They worked together at the Chatham Bars Inn, the Park Plaza Hotel and Brae Burn Country Club. They went on to re-open Top of the Hub, which has become one of Boston’s most iconic and award-winning restaurants.

Criminal Justice Reform: Existing Efforts to Make the Criminal System Fairer and More Just

Ralph D. Gants became the 37th Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in July 2014 when he was sworn in by Governor Deval Patrick. He was appointed as an Associate Justice on the Court in January 2009. Before joining the SJC, he served more than 11 years as an Associate Justice of the Massachusetts Superior Court, and was Administrative Justice of the Superior Court’s Business Litigation Session in 2008.

Chief Justice Gants received his B.A. from Harvard College in 1976, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. The following year, he completed a Diploma in Criminology at Cambridge University in England. In 1980, he earned a J.D. degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School, where he was note editor of the Harvard Law Review. He began

his legal career as a law clerk to U.S. District Court Judge Eugene H. Nickerson, and then served as a Special Assistant to FBI Director William H. Webster. He was an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Massachusetts and Chief of the Public Corruption Unit before joining the Boston law firm formerly known as Palmer & Dodge LLP, where he practiced until he was appointed to the Superior Court by Governor William Weld. He has taught at Harvard Law School, New England Law | Boston, and Northeastern University School of Law. Chief Justice Gants is chair of the SJC’s Standing Committee on Model Jury Instructions on Homicide and the SJC Indigency Committee, and was co-chair of the Massachusetts Access to Justice Commission from 2010 to 2015.

Among his awards and honors are the 2017 Massachusetts Bar Foundation Great Friend of Justice Award, the 2016 Haskell Cohn Award for Distinguished Judicial Service, the Boston Bar Association and Citation of Judicial Excellence.

Paul Farmer, MD, PhD, one of the founders of Partners In Health (PIH), will share how PIH found new pathways and developed a model for curing the ravages of HIV/AIDS, multidrug-resistant tuberculosis and cholera among the world’s poorest people. Working always in formal partnership with the countries it serves, PIH has seen stunning

success in its work in Haiti, Rwanda, Peru, Malawi, Lesotho and five other developing nations. Because its model of delivery was so successful, PIH was invited early on to address the Ebola crisis in Sierra Leone and Liberia. The ripple effect of the PIH model has been profound: It has been replicated again and again in other parts of the world,

and is widely regarded as an essential tool in addressing the daunting challenges of global health.

Dr. Paul Farmer is the Kolokotrones University Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and Chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine. He is a co-founder of Partners In Health and currently serves as Chief Strategist.
