Bulletin for Families 21st February 2018 Coming up ….. In the Community….. Kettles Yard Film Project As part of their re-opening exhibition, the team at Kettles Yard made a short film called Art to Go’. The film is an active demonstration and how-tofor a simple art activity to encourage young people to get involved. The artist Harold Offeh, demonstrates his activity with help from two of our Art Ambassadors—Victoria & Louise. Please use your registration details and please make sure you have activated your account. We are now able to offer online payments for school meals, school uniform and school trips. Please click here for further information: ParentPay Letter & ParentPay FAQs. U13 BoysHandball NCA competed in their first handball tournament of the year and got off to a fantastic start! The boys played excellently as a team and scored some brilliant goals, despite only having a couple of weeks to practice. NCA took on Swavesey and Impington in some very competitive games, both ending in a well fought draw, putting NCA in second place over- all. It is great to say that NCA were undefeated and we have high hopes for the team in future tournaments, well done to all those involved. Royal Albert Hall Choir Trip—Monday 26th March The NCA Choir have been asked to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Monday 26th March at 7pm as part of a massed choir of 2,000 singers accompanied by a professional West End band and singers. The event is being organised by the internationally acclaimed Armonico Consort and promises to be a very exciting evening. Pupils have been working towards the concert in workshop sessions led by two choir lead- ers from the Armonico Consort. Should parents wish to watch their children at the concert they can purchase tickets online at www.royalalberthall.com/tickets. Full details of the trip can be found here: RAH Arbury Carnival—Saturday 9th June 2018 The 2017 (40th anniversary) carnival saw the community celebrate in great style with a glorious summer day, record stall bookings and at- tendance, a fantastic carnival procession, non-stop arena events and, for the first time an evening concert. A big thank you to all those that took part and to the organising committee who worked so hard to put the event together. In November, an open meeting was held to encourage local people to come forward and help form the 2018 organising committee. We now have a great mix of old and new committee members and have already started planning this years carnival. If you had a stall last year you will automatically be sent a booking form for this year at the end of January. New stall holders will be able to download a form from our website at the end of January. Arbury Carnival Committee Year 7 Science Last term 7sc2 prepared some excellent revision resources that they used over half term to prepare for their end of topic test. Great work year 7 & we hope they helped in your test! Chelseas Choice—Wednesday 14th March We have the opportunity to show year 9 and 10 pupils a play performed by the AlterEgo Theatre Company called Chelseas Choice, which is recommended and funded by the Local Childrens Safeguarding Board. The play will take place during the school day on Wednesday 14 th March. We have also scheduled a special evening performance especially for parents, carers, adults who work with young people and our partner organisations. Tickets for the evening performance, which takes place on Wednesday 14 th March at 6pm are free of charge and refresh- ments will be available. We do hope you can attend the evening performance and ask that if you wish to request a ticket you contact Alison Gallagher, PA to the Princi- pal [email protected] or telephone 01223 491 530. The first was a drawing workshop, where the pupils got to explore the house and new gallery spaces. The second was a slogan art workshop, pupils created artwork using a concept similar to the game Consequences”. They wrote words which related to the previous words they had used, to create a slogan, the slogans were projected onto the wall. Pupils had an inspiring and enjoyable day. In the News ….. Safeguarding Children—Survey The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Safeguarding Children Board is currently undertaking some work around Child Sexual Abuse. To help with this work they are seeking the views of young people, parents and carers and professionals. The closing date for these surveys is the 2nd March 2018. Pupils will get to experience some first-hand Maths concepts in one of the most exciting, architecturally creative cities in the world. The itinerary includes visiting La Grande Arche and Peis Pyramid at the Louvre, both impressive architectural structures. The first information evening for this trip is Wednesday 28th February 5.306.30pm in the main hall at NCA. Year 9 So you want to be a Scientist?Day—Monday 19th March On Monday 19th March the science department has arranged an exciting opportunity for pupils to learn about how to become a scientist. Pupils will get the chance to meet with young scientists; learn about their jobs, what inspired them and what education they needed. There will also be amazing demonstrations and lots of time for questions. The day is being run by the Cambridge Science Festival and GE Healthcare. Year 5 Virus Day—Tuesday 6th & Thursday 8th March After the success of last years Virus Investigation Day, North Cambridge Academy are running it again this year for local year 5 pupils. Year 5 pupils will enter into the school whilst under quarantine due to an outbreak of Vanavaro Virus. Pupils will embark on a number of workshops to better understand its devastating impact: in science they will investigate the physiological effects of the virus; through their maths workshop theyll calculate its ability to infect and mul- tiply rapidly; in the humanities department theyll learn and discuss making the right decisions when threatened by the virus and in English theyll broadcast just how widespread it has been. By working with our core depart- ments we hope pupils develop an understanding of the threats that historically humans have had to overcome and will face as society moves forward. Were also confident pupils will enjoy exploring, calculating, evaluating and creating with our teams across the academy. Year 8 Enterprise Day—Tuesday 27th February Next Tuesday 27th February we are hosting an Enterprise Day in conjunction with Form the Future. Teams of year 8 pupils will develop creative business ideas and pitch them to a Dragons Den-style panel. The best teams will be selected to receive a £100 seed fund to bring their idea to life, competing to generate the most profit. The new ventures will be mentored by a local business professional, who will guide and advise the teams at each step of the way. We look forward to seeing the ideas they come up with. Police Cadets target crime prevention Four of our police cadets are taking part in Operation Oculus today, a Cambridge Constabulary Operation about Crime Prevention. They will be spending the day giving out crime prevention advice to members of the public at the Cambridge Railway Station & Cambridge Bus Station.
