DIARY DATES August 17,18,19 St. Ives Fair August 23rd Member’s Meeting September 13,14,15 Spring Show @ the Dee Why Grand September 8-9. ANOS Warringah Group Spring Show, Memorial Hall, Starkey Street, Forrestville. September 27th AGM & Member’s Meeting October 13 SPECIES Show & Auction, West Pennant Hills Community Centre, October 25th Member’s Meeting November 18th Auction November 22nd Members Meeting December 2nd Christmas Party December 20th Member’s Meeting Hybrid Plant of the Evening Grown by A. Sulfaro Phalaenopsis Unknown

Despite being so common and generally what the uninitiated think of when we say orchid, not many of our members grow Phalaenopsis. I’m glad some of you do, and I’m glad Angie does so well. They are a fantastic addition to our displays at shows, and I can’t remember the last time this section of the bench was empty at a monthly meeting.

Specie Plant of the Evening Grown by C. Polis Ansellia africana var. nilotica

Probably the best known orchid of mainland Africa, Ansellia africana is a fascinating orchid. Officially a monotypic species, it is now widely accepted to be a species complex of multiple, very closely related species. Most commonly it grows as an epiphyte, high up in trees, and its roots have a tendency to grow upwards into a basket shape to catch leaf litter. They have been known to form massive specimens,

estimated to be up to a tonne in weight and are often used by large species of bird to nest in. It also readily hybridises with other

genera such as Cymbidium, Catasetum and Promenaea.

Page 3: BULLETIN · 2018-08-22 · manly warringah orchid society inc. bulletin membership fees are now due.. single $15 and family $18. $10 postage fee for members receiving hard copy bulletins.

Specimen Plant of Evening Grown By T. Riddell Dinema (Encyclia) polybulbon

Definitely a plant meant to be a specimen, Dinema polybulbon is quick to multiply and adapts well to growing as a mound more so than mounted or in a pot. The secret is plenty of water and light to grow it quickly and get a high flower count (not that that is a real secret, it applies to most plants). Since being moved from Encyclia, it is now considered a monotypic genus (containing only one species). Found growing on oaks in the mixed forests of Mexico, Nicaragua, Cuba and Jamaica, it is quite adaptable to a range of conditions and is worth a place in everyone’s collection.

Novice Plant of the Evening Grown by M. & S. Howard Jumellea sagittata

Madagascar and the other islands of the east coast of Africa are absolutely full of botanical wonders, and the orchids from this region certainly don't disappoint. Of all the Angraecinae subtribe, Jumellea sagittata seems to be on the easier side to grow, however they dont seem particularly common. Which is a shame. They are the most pristine white and beautifully scented. Once again, very well grown by Michael and Sheree.
