Being a three day working week there wasn’t enough time for our regular Facebook question. Instead we will give you an up-date on the changes to our website.

In the last month we activated Face-book interaction, al-lowing our readers to share any article placed on the website. As a result we have found that our readers are sharing and liking our stories

and recorded an above average number reads for shared stories

as opposed to un-shared stories.

Since there is no-where for readers in our distribution area to fi nd a simple listing of upcoming events, Bulletin has started an Events sec-tion on the website.

This shows the Event Name and Location, the Start Date and — where appropriate — End date

(and times), a Description of the event itself, as well as Contact de-tails for the Event Organiser.

We invite you to provide the de-tails for any event you’re organis-ing for inclusion in our listing.

Please go to our website and check it out. The events are list-ed on the right-hand side of the home page www.bulletin.us.com

Our next project is to enable Pic-ture Galleries on the website. To enable us to do this we will need pictures taken at any local event: school, church, social, anything.

Chemofobie is iets waaraan homeopate se pasiënte ly. Dentofobie, meeste mense is bang vir tande-trekkers, of hul rekenings! Ecclesiofobie: dalk ly Vlieg so ‘n bietjie daaraan — ‘n vrees vir kerke.

Siekte…?Julle bangbroeke!

Agendas and minutes of ANC cau-cus meetings, leaked to the Bulle-tin, clearly show that the Greater Tzaneen Municipality has been com-pletely politicised and that coun-cillors have to dance to the tunes played by their ANC political mas-ters (as is the case in seemingly all local government bodies).

Councillors are clearly fi gureheads that have eff ectively been ostracized, earning handsome salaries to act as glorifi ed messengers between the ANC’s ring heads and the populace.

The appointment, suspension and ultimate fi ring of the mu-nicipal manager, Mr Elias Mankabidi, is such a case in point.

In the minutes of an ANC party caucus meeting (of the GTM) it is minuted that “it was highlighed that the former Muncipal Manager was deployed by the ANC and the cau-cus resolved that the ANC must intervene”.

“The PMT (party management team) and ANC need to meet and resolve the matt er and the ANC will engage the former Municipal Manager and PMT,” according to the min-utes. And furthermore: “On the renewal of Acting Municipal Manager’s contract the ANC was consulted and the matt er is awaiting the MEC’s concurrency”, and “it was further hinted that for the purposes of stability we need to retain him as per ANC directive.”

It is thus clear that the GTM’s councillors cannot really de-cide what is in the best interest of the community. Their only contribution towards solving the problem of the municipal manager’s conduct is to say to the ANC: “You pushed him in (to the position), so you push him out”.

Another knowledgeable offi cial must go

Mr Anton Killian, one of the most knowledgeable munic-

ipal offi cials from the previous regime, is probably serving his last few months in the GTM’s important engineering ser-vices employ.

In the minutes of an ANC caucus meeting (in the GTM) of 1 Octber 2014 it is stated that a “transformation plan for all the departments (in the GTM) be prepared”. Later on it states that “Killian must go in twelve (12) months time”.

Lack of leadership and visionThe most obvious problem in the GTM is the lack of strong

leadership and there is also a problem with a clear vision for the institution. So says a senior ANC member in local gov-ernment, who can for obvious reasons not be identifi ed.

A prime example of how the GTM lacks strong leadership and some visionary decision making, is the GTM’s irrespon-sible att itude towards the country’s electricity problems.

No offi cial guidelines have been given to employees regard-ing the usage of air conditioners and/or lights in municipal

buildings. This despite an urgent appeal by the President to save every possible litt le bit of electricity.

The new interim CEO of Eskom called on people within a week of his moving into the hot chair, to see every light that is switched off when it is not needed, as a saving that could hep the country.

Six weeks aft er the Bulletin addressed the GTM’s noncha-lant att itude about the problem, with photos showing how the main building in Agatha Street is lit up at night and over weekends, no offi cial plan of action has been announced.

We saw an e-mail from the chief electrical engineer (Mr Pierre van den Heever) that was sent out some weeks ago, but we have been told that nothing came of that. We have been told in ther past week that Van den Heever has sent out yet another e-mail to call on employees to switch off air conditioners and lights, but it is said that employees don’t co-operate and that Van den Heever’s e-mail represents a lonely voice without any offi cial backing.

• We are still studying a stack of documents relating to the ex-orbitant legal expenses by the GTM, plus some other interesting matt ers. Next week we will continue with more disclosures about expenditure by the GTM that could be seen as wasteful — Editor

e land of milk & honey (Part 3)• ‘You pushed him in, you push him out...’

The GTM’s main building in Agatha Street is nicely lit up at night and over weekends... whilst the country is struggling with elec-

tricity supply problems.

Limpopo crime bustsDiff erent task teams and tracing units of the SA Police Service in Limpopo conducted breakthrough investigations during the past few days, which resulted in the arrests of several suspects for various crimes.

Amongst others, suspects arrested for crimes in our area include a 23-year-old man from Bolobedu who was arrested last year on a charge of rape. The 23-year-old has now also been confi rmed a serial rapist aft er DNA tests positively connected him to 37 cases in the area. The suspect was arrested in May last year aft er he broke into the house of his last victim, overpowered and raped her. The victim screamed during the ordeal and the suspect fl ed. However, her father woke up, chased the suspect, shot him in the leg and called the Police. He was arrested, and aft er thorough investigations and DNA tests, the results confi rmed that he was involved in 37 cases of rape.

The 23-year-old’s reign of terror in the Bolobedu area reportedly started in 2013. His modus operandi was to overpower women while they were walking alone, or breaking into their homes and rape them.

The suspect appeared in the Tzaneen Magistrates’ Court late last week and is due back in court on 30 April. His identity will not be revealed yet, as an identifi cation parade must still be conducted.

In another incident, two suspects were arrested for poaching in the Kruger National Park, close to the Phalaborwa gate. Visitors alerted rangers at the gate aft er they saw the two crossing a tar road on foot.

A helicopter and the police were summoned. Rangers followed the tracks in the bush and found the suspects hiding in a thick bush.

They confi scated a 458 hunting rifl e, ammunition, a knife, two cell phones as well as four rhino horns.

Two of the horns were reportedly relatively fresh, while the other two were old. The scenes where the alleged shooting took place are still being traced. The suspects appeared in the Phalaborwa Magistrates’ Court early last week.

Gang rape suspects on the runThe SAPS Tzaneen Cluster FCS Unit has launched a manhunt for suspects who committ ed a gang rape.

The incident took place earlier in the year near Musiphana Village, Letsitele. According

to the cluster’s spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, a 25-year-old woman was reportedly collecting fi re wood with two other women when two unknown suspects att acked them with pangas. Aft er realising the danger, two of the women managed to scurry away, leaving one in the mercy of the suspects. She was dragged to nearby bushes and raped.

Through preliminary investigations, a picture (as seen) was drawn by the SAPS Forensic Unit to assist in tracking one of the identifi ed suspects. The other one cannot be identifi ed as he was wearing a balaclava during the crime.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the pictured suspect may contact the nearest Police or D\Const Vuyani Mohlaba on 076 403 0641 or 015 306 2000, or the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or SMS 32211.

Syndicate suspects busted

Two suspects were recently arrested in two separate incidents for a series of business robberies, house breaking and theft cases by a joint special operation composed of The SAPS TRT, the Cluster Trio Task Team, Maake SAPS’s Crime Prevention and detective unit members.

One suspect, aged forty, was arrested in Tickyline, Letsitele, and the other, aged thirty, was arrested in Gavaza, also in the Maake policing area. The following items were found in their possession: one R5 rifl e, 31 R5 rifl e rounds, one magazine, TV sets, radio speakers, dishes, shoes, blankets and radios (as per the att ached photos).

The two allegedly committ ed a business robbery in Gavaza late last week. They allegedly entered a local shop, pointed the owner with a rifl e and ordered everyone to lie down. They then robbed the customers of their cash, air time vouchers, and cigarett es before running away. They will be appearing in the Naphuno Magistrates’ Court on charges of robbery, house breaking and theft .

The police are reportedly also investigating

other criminal activities the two committ ed. According to the Tzaneen SAPS spokesperson, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, investigations on whether the two are connected to a series of crimes such as robberies, house breaking and theft are underway. Members of the community are requested to visit the Maake Police should they have fallen victim to the suspects, in order to identify their belongings. The Police would also like to commend members of the community who supported the SAPS with quality information leading to the arrests.

Driver killed, suspect still at large

The Police in Bolobedu recently launched a manhunt for people who shot and killed a 36-year-old taxi driver over the weekend. The 36-year-old, identifi ed as Tshepo Selopjane, was a resident of Bellevue Village, Bolobedu. He was reportedly transporting passengers from Gauteng to Bolobedu on the day of the incident. Upon his arrival at the neighbouring Ga-Matshwi Village unknown gunmen allegedly att acked him and shot him several times. He died instantly.

Selopjane was found dead behind the steering wheel of his taxi. The att ackers were not around. The Police say they do not have a clear picture of the actual incident and the motive behind it, but taxi related confl ict cannot be ruled out.

Anyone with information which may help the police in the case can contact Maj Donald Shingange on 082 469 2625 or 078 531 8184, the nearest Police Station or the SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111. SMSes can also be sent to 32211.

If you are into environmental friendly deterrents for insects and other bugs, consider a look at Plant Trader’s beauties.

“I’m passionate about my Lit-tle Shop of Horrors,” states Ms

Lara Stanford (27) from Hae-nertsburg. She’s describing her carnivorous plant busi-ness Plant Trader. Stanford, a former Stanford Lake College student, shares a gardening passion with Ryder McGaf-fi n, also ex-SLC, her farmer partner of seven years. The Lake as well as the school was named aft er her illustri-ous ancestor who built Stan-ford Lake.

Aft er school Stanford ob-tained her B Tech in Surface Design at the Cape Universi-ty of Technology. The course involved multi-skills inclu-ding creating user friendly and sustainable designs, product designs, computer programming and photogra-phy so that one can go out into the world and start a busi-ness. Aft er studying for four years, she joined the pres-tigious Johannesburg fi rm Silvo Rech & Lesley Carstens Architecture and Interior as assistant interior designer. She loved designing custom pieces but not many of those gems came along due of budgetary restraints. Stanford then joined a city landscaping company in quirky Mabo-neng called The Living Room for a year.

Stanford and McGaffi n’s initial interest in carnivorous plants was ignited by Mr Clay-ton Cook, a once local herpetologist, now living in KwaZulu-Natal. The couple began Plant Trader almost a year ago and now sell at fairs and outlets in Tzaneen and Polokwane. Stanford’s other passion is photography and she’s oft en seen assisting a local Tzaneen pho-tographer at weddings and other important functions.

Plant Trader sells Venus fl ytraps and sun-dews with hybrids coming out regularly onto the market. The epicentre of carnivorous plants is California the USA and Holland also cultivates these bug eating plants in hot hous-es. Carnivorous plants grow outside in South Africa but they can, if necessary, be brought inside near a window. They have diff erent methods of digesting food. Some have fi ne hairs that trigger the plant and eventually only bug skeletons are left . Sundews have a sticky residue and when the light hits the dew buds the whole plant glistens in the sun. Insects are att racted to that. The plant curls up and eats them.

Then there are also Trumpet Plants and Monkey Cups. These have fl uted trumpets with trigger hairs at the top. Insects get drunk from the scent, fall inside an enzyme enriched well that consumes the insect. “Cut that trumpet in the middle and the smell is terrible as it’s a pit of death,” the petite, soft -spoken Stanford smiles shyly as she ut-ters these words.

Carnivorous plants have a long life expectancy. The go dormant in winter, conserve their energy underground and don’t eat as much. They’re used to bog conditions so need to be kept moist constantly. When pott ing plants, the medium must contain no nutrients, or else the plant will die. The plants get their nutrients solely from insects. Plant Trader uses non-treated sawdust as the planting medium.

The initial outlay for carnivorous plants is very expen-sive but Plant Trader is slowly increasing its stock on McGaffi n’s farm outside Haenertsburg.

Alternative & natural way to control insects

YumYum, Tzaneen’s popular up-market res-taurant, has spread its wings and a new YumYum has opened in Somerset West in the Western Cape (almost like a suburb of Cape Town). News from the town is that the new restaurant has become popular in a very short space of time. Reports also confirm that the locally grown coffee (on the Alon farm in the mountain close to Mod-jadjiskloof) is very pop-ular with the Capetoni-ans. One of Alon’s trustees, Mr Jan Tromp, confirmed that the new YumYum has quick-

ly earned a strong core of customers and that things are really going well at YumYum Somerset West.

Dear WomanWhat if you could go on paid leave during your periods? No, seriously! Periods are not nice. Men, dare you not stop reading. This is something that concerns half of the world’s population. When something concerns half of almost any given area’s population, everyone should be concerned.

Periods are not fun; it is no secret. There are all sorts of things invented to make periods seem like a no issue for women, including pain relief pills, sanitary towels and tampons — some if not all of which are by no means use-less. However, when blood is fl owing out of you like a riv-er fl ows down a stream, no amount of pain relief can and should take away the seriousness of the situation.

Periods are messy, no matt er how good one is at making them invisible to everyone else. Like babies, they need con-stant nurturing. One literally has to make sure they do not get out of hand.

Periods are naturally uncomfortable, at least for the fi rst few days for some of us. You literally feel the blood, in its various intensities, coming out of you.

It is not fair that during their periods women are also ex-

pected to work, go to school, take care of their families and what not. Our reproductive system is going through a time of rejuvenation; yes, unfamiliar to men. We cannot go on like nothing is happening.

Fair enough, there are ways (I have heard of contracep-tives) in which one can manage and make the fl ow predict-able or even halt it, all of which can be beautiful in their own ways. However, we cannot be expected to unnaturally man-age something part of and essential to our nature. It is like being expected to take medicine to control your bathroom visits. While some might do it for whatever reason, it cannot be the standard for everyone.

Last year I covered an event in which a national company

handed out sanitary towels to rural school girls aft er a na-tional outcry about girls in rural areas oft en missing school during their periods because they cannot aff ord sanitary towels. At the time I thought surely sanitary towels are not enough. Menstrual periods are more than the blood that comes out of us. Besides the emotional turmoil known to ac-company them (which, I must say, studies show are not that common and the prevalent association of which is rooted in some patriarchal means to deny women logic whenever going through emotional distress), periods are physically stressful.

At the time I thought fi nding a way to make access to pain killers easy and free for the girls should be considered as well. However, now I am thinking, maybe the girls were right to miss school because they were on their periods.

Until recently, I thought the idea of women taking time off during their periods was asking for too much. However, how many people function like they usually do when they are not physically well? Moreover, how many people, ex-cept women, are expected to function as usual when they are not physically well?

Bulletin: We support any lawful action to end violence against our women & children

Psalm 139 vers 13 en 14: “U het my gevorm, my aanmekaargeweef...

The FCS (Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Off ences) unit of the SA Police Service in Tzaneen visited Merensky High School on invitation. The staff and management body requested this visit, as a pro-active step to combat the dangers of sexual predators who pose a real threat to all children via the internet. In a very interesting presentation, Capt Danelle Fourie informed the pupils about sexual off ences and how to report it. She also educated them on the threats of cell phones with internet access, focusing on the dangers of internet pornography, social sites, dangerous applications and how sexual predators can use these platforms to infi ltrate innocent lives. Seen here are the members of the group who paid the visit to the school: Lt Col Usiba (Operational Commander Crime Prevention), Const Makhubela (Tzaneen SAPS), Capt Danelle Fourie (FCS Unit), Const Manimele (Tzaneen SAPS) and Capt Mogoboya (Tzaneen SAPS).

vang.

A LOVING HOME THAT REFLECTS SOUTH AFRICAN DIVERSITYConsider adoption as an option.

South Africa is a country with 11 offi cial languages, hundreds of cultural groups and numerous recognised religions. Every day, families everywhere are mixing up these ingredients to create this multi-wonderful nation that we know and love. If you are thinking of adoption, have you considered adopting a child from a different race or culture? Children are just children, no matter their biological background, and all children need a loving home.

Start your journey today by learning the facts with Add-option, South Africa’s fi rst national adoption resource centre.

“There is a big difference between the idea of cross-cultural adoption, and actually taking a little boy or girl into your home. We didn’t adopt an idea, we adopted Jenna! And from the fi rst moment she has been the love of our lives, exactly the same as a proud mom and dad would reach out for their biological baby at the hospital. The only difference is that she wasn’t born from our womb, but from our hearts.”

eerste wedstryd 10-14 teen Noordheuwel verloor.

The staff , students and par-ents of Nazarene Christian Academy in Tzaneen had the privilege of planting twelve Bush River Willow trees dur-ing a ceremony held at the new learning centre and ablution block on Friday last week. The trees were planted between the new class rooms and the park-ing lot.

Parents of NCA pupils were excited about this venture, as

the sponsored trees will be fi t-ted with plaques in due time indicating the sponsors thereof, thus leaving a legacy at NCA for their children in the future.

The following sponsors do-nated trees: Tzaneen Lion Park, Sithole Family, Stevens Family, Mkhabele Family, Venter Fam-ily, Mhlari Family, Magamana Family, Brits Family, Roberts family, Joubert Family and Pre-torius Family.

Hier bewonder twee

toekomstige Larries koning leeu by verlede naweek se sportbyeenkoms.

Plasie-kunstenaars bekoor hul gehoor

The Duiwelskloof “Home Day Trips” tournament with a fi rst prize of R1 500, att racted a good turnout of eighteen teams from Hoedspruit, Eiland, Tzaneen and Duiwels-kloof. Needless to say the fun fi lled event was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Tournament well supported

Gullis Gouws (president) handed over the R1 500 sponsored by J & D Fasteners to Wally Herfurth, Patricia Maggs and Pe-

ter Maggs, the winning team.

Gullis Gouws is seen congratulating Peet Jordaan, Carine Engelbrecht and Frans Chadwick on their second place.

The third place winners in the tournament were presented with some nice cutlery by Gullis Gouws, seen here with Zane

Fanie, David Wiid and Di de Wet.

Duiwelskloof Bowling club held it’s Spec-savers Pro 10 competition, where a total of eleven teams entered. The teams were split into sections of 6 and 5, with the latter having by’s. The top team from each section went through to a play off, and Ally and Sue Morrison who had a closely contested game against Peter and Pat Maggs came out victors at 52 points versus 48. Ally and Sue progressed

to the next rounds in Polokwane, held this past weekend. With them is Gullis Gouws, president.

“The most cogent reason for restricting the interference of government is the great evil of adding unnecessarily to its power.” — John Stuart Mill

Kurten, Aiden McKenzie, Tayla von Pannier, Tyana Zaayman.
