ROLLING SUCCESS

John P. Coutis is an exceptional person. Born with a severe disability that rendered his legs useless, John defied medical opinion by refusing to die. Today John speaks all around the world to tens of thousands, very enthusiastic and eager people, whom he leaves breathless.

He was invited into the Sydney 2000 Olympic Team Village to support the Australian Team and in 2001 the Australian Wallabies called on John to boost their attitudes for the final match of the series against the British Irish Lions, winning the deciding Test to secure the series for the first time in history between these two teams. Rod McQueen, John Eales & George Gregan publically acknowledged John for getting the Wallabies over the line, saying ‘John showed us that by believing in yourself, anything is possible.’

John plays a significant role in Australian schools and youth leadership programs. He has been invited into more than 700 schools throughout Australia & speaks on topics such as; Anti-Bullying, Life Topics, Treating People The Way You Wish To Be Treated, Goal Setting, Overcoming Challenges & Getting The Best Out of Life. There are many Youth Forums held around Australia these days and John is a most sort after speaker to join these forums. Forums such as ‘Young Leaders Day’, ‘Step To The Future’, ‘Step Up Foundation’ and ‘Kids In The Community’. These forums are dedicated to assisting Australia’s youth in helping them to reach their full potential.

John was guest speaker recently at a BCS secondary assembly and his motivational speech about how he copes and overcomes the difficulties presented by his disabilities was listened to very intently by his audience. replied, “Priceless.”. Mitchell was called to the stage and given a $20 note to keep as a symbol that no matter what happens, how much your life is messed up, or you are jumped on or you feel worthless…that life is priceless.

PSP Surveys

Parents of Kindergarten, Years 1-3 and 7-9 students

Only 50% of these surveys have been returned so far and if the school is going to be considered for additional funding and resources for the next three years we need close to 100% of the surveys returned.

I am asking every family who has a child in Kindergarten, Years 1-3 or 7-9 to please take the time to complete and return the survey form this week. If you require a new form or assistance in filling out the survey please contact the front office.

The information provided on the survey form is confidential and the survey form is returned in a sealed envelope. No-one at the school can read the response of any family and no one who opens the envelope at the scanning company knows which family it came from.

The survey form itself is short and only takes up one side of a single piece of paper. Only essential questions are asked and it is easy to complete. Please take the time this week to get it back to the school.

Great Shave Event.

Congratulation to our SRC who ran a very successful fund raising activity last week with two Year 9 students, Josh Campbell and Harrison Reid having their heads shaved.

At the same event staff member Gemma Stace underwent a “Buzz Cut” and has raised more than $5300 for the Cancer Council. Gemma has asked that the funds are used for research into pancreatic cancer and the support of both of patients and the families who are affected by this disease. Congratulation to all involved.

See also the SRC article on page 7 for more details.

Students Exiting the School at 3.15

I remind parents and students to please use the pedestrian crossing when arriving at and leaving the school via the front gate. Again last week we had a situation where a student was nearly hit by a motor vehicle because they decided to cross up the street from the crossing, walking out between stationary vehicles.

Whilst the school keeps reminding students I’m asking parents and caregivers to please also ensure their child uses the crossing for their own safety as well as the safety of others.

P & C Easter Egg Competition

This is one of the annual fund raisers by the P & C and tickets will go out this week to all families. The P & C and school encourages all students, parent and community members to support this competition as the money comes back to support all students at Bulahdelah Central School.

SECONDARY: I would like to welcome everyone back to the new school year, having not been here to write a report for the newsletter until now. It has been a traumatic and sad time for me personally since the beginning of the year but I have been overwhelmed by the comfort and support that my colleagues, students and parents have given me. I would thank everyone sincerely for their continued support throughout Jeanette’s illness and her passing, all of which makes it a little easier to cope with. Students and staff, including those new to our school, all appear to have settled into the new year. I have been impressed particularly by the way our incoming year 7 students have adapted to the routines and demands of high school. Year 7 Adviser Ms. Parson’s hard work has certainly paid off with the students working well and also having an excellent camp at Camp Elim where they hopefully consolidated their class relationships and their understanding of high school. Year 11 students are also helping year 7 students adapt by acting as peer support leaders and running regular workshops on peer support. They also attended the Camp Elim on 7th March. A number of our students have changed their elective courses over the past few weeks as they have adjusted their aspirations and their understanding of the demands of year 9 and year 11. Unfortunately the window of opportunity to change has closed as changes now would require students to catch up at least five weeks’ worth of work – a big ask. If you have any concerns about electives please don’t hesitate to contact me. The past week also involved our first monitoring of student progress for the year. Students are assessed on academic progress and may receive a letter if they have shown outstanding achievement or if there are any early concerns. Also, the first parent/teacher evening for year 7 students and senior students was held on Tuesday 13th march. Our next parent/teacher meeting will be in early July. Please mark the date (when available) on your calendars. Recently we held an excursion for senior art students to the Taree Regional Art Gallery and also the first of many knockout tournaments occurring with girls’ touch as well as our gifted and talented students have travelled with Mrs. Gilbert and Mr. Holt to a Geek Camp to extend their maths skills.

- Roger Horton, Secondary Deputy Principal .PRIMARY: I would like to thank all parents who took the opportunity to come and meet their child’s teacher and learn about the happenings of the classroom at the parent information session held on the 6th March. It was wonderful to see parents asking questions and contributing observations about curriculum and extra-curricular learning experiences. This type of forum allows for a deeper understanding, by the parent, about educational issues and strengthens the home school partnership. Thanks for your attendance and input.

Six students were selected to attend the zone soccer trials, at Tomaree, last Friday. The students are: Klayton Haynes, Fletcher Barclay, Caleb Grimshaw, Brandon Watt, Mary-Joy Bramston and Kensley Nassif. This is a good opportunity for students with a high level of sporting prowess to compete against their peers with similar skills and abilities. Our PSSA tennis team comprising Klayton Haynes, Caleb Grimshaw, Madison Hurtado and Jordyn Watt will play Barrington PS, tomorrow, in the first round of the 2012 knock out competition. We wish these students the best of luck!

Our Myall Learning Community middle school sports day was once again a huge success. We had the privilege of hosting the Stage 3 students from our partner schools for the first of our transition program events. I would like to thank Cathryn Guthrie (SRC coordinator) and the SRC members, for their organisation and management of the day. You all did a fantastic job. Thanks!!

The Young Leaders Day, for our school leaders, is fast approaching. I am looking forward to accompanying our leaders, along with the schools leaders from Booral and Tea Gardens public schools, to this engaging and motivational event, on the 25 and 26th March.

The Stephanie Alexander garden classes are in full swing and the garden is really starting to come together. The students are enjoying their classes, with many of our students already obtaining their wheelbarrow licence. They are also enjoying their interactions with our community volunteers, who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program. We have great volunteers but could always do with more. If you would like to be a SAKG volunteer, contact me at school.

The next merit assembly will be held in Week 11, not Week 10, as previously notified. The change of date is due to our leaders being in Sydney at the Young Leaders conference. The new date is Monday 2nd April. Some dates for your diary: 19th/20th Mar School photos; 23rd Mar Stage 3 excursion to Sea Acres Rainforest; 25th/26th Mar Young Leaders Day; 30th Mar School X Country; 2nd Apr Merit Assembly; 5th Apr Last

DOUBLE LAUNCH PUTS CENTRAL COAST ABORIGINAL COMMUNITY ON THE MAP

Recently youthconnections.com.au hosted the launch of the region’s only Indigenous Skills Centre. The official

launch was celebrated by a sneak preview to the central coast community of the soon to be released documentary on the 2011 Young Freedom Ride. Since commencing operations, the Indigenous Skills Centre has supported training for the local Aboriginal community in hospitality, tourism, conservation and land management, horticulture, construction and engineering. The facility located at Green Central, Mt Penang Parklands, boasts classrooms, horticultural facilities and garden, commercial kitchen and bush tucker café. Over 300 locals attended the launch and were privileged to have a sneak preview of the 2011 Young Freedom Ride documentary. The 2011 Young Freedom Ride retraced the steps of Charles Perkins who instigated the 1965 Freedom Ride which was a major event in Australia’s First People’s struggle for equality, civil liberty and the vote. The young Freedom Riders are Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students from central coast high schools. They visited 21 communities across NSW and southern Queensland. They carried with them a message stick to capture the names of elders within these communities and a kangaroo hide bound book where community members could record how they would like the constitution to record and acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. In September 2011 the message stick and book were presented to the expert panel convened to advise on the wording of a referendum that will see Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders recognised in the Australian constitution. In January 2012 the artifacts were presented to the Prime Minister along with the expert panel’s recommendations. The documentary records the journey of the young Freedom Riders through each community and reflects on the conditions Aboriginal people now face and their aspirations for a reconciled Australia. The story is a personalised account from Elders, community members and the young Freedom Riders. The documentary acknowledges the past and encourages the audience to continue the struggle. SKILLS ON SHOW

Selected students from years 10, 11 & 12 travelled to the Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Friday 16th March for Skills on Show workshop. At this event young people were encouraged to participate in entertaining, dynamic and informative “hands on” workshops, awakening a desire to find a fulfilling career path within the Hunter. The event afforded the opportunity to highlight the trades and skills which are needed for future growth in our region to a wide stakeholder platform.

All ages: Become a foster carer - This year around 24,000 young people aged from babies to teens will be living in out-of-home care due to a range of domestic issues. As a result, foster carers are urgently needed and Fostering NSW is calling on caring and stable people to help care for a young person in their home. Foster carers play a vital role and by giving these children safe and caring homes, either short or long-term, help to change their lives for the better. If you would like to know more about becoming a foster carer, call 1800 236 783 or visit www.fosteringnsw.com.au/ Bandaged Bear Appeal - With the 23rd annual Bandaged Bear Appeal running throughout March 2012, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, which treats 70,000 sick children each year, is asking the community to show its support to seriously ill children by holding a Bandaged Bear Breakfast, making a donation or purchasing Bandaged Bear Appeal merchandise. Head to the Bandaged Bear Appeal website at www.bandagedbear.com.au or call 9845 3481 and register to hold a Bandaged Bear Breakfast, make a donation, or find out where to purchase appeal merchandise. National Sea Week 2012 - Did you know Australia is one of the most urbanised nations in the world and most people live within an hour or two of the coast? The annual National Sea Week (which this year starts on 4 March) helps draw attention to issues related to the marine environment. This year’s focus is on marine debris (litter) and what we can do to help keep the ocean clean. Go to www.mesa.edu.au/seaweek2012/default.asp for activities and information on how you can be involved. The first day also coincides with the annual Clean Up Australia Day. www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/ Holiday dates - Please note the last day of first term is 5 April with school resuming on 24 April. Easter public holidays run from 6 to 9 April. Primary School: Friendships help learning - Research shows that if children are happy socially, they are more likely to be more engaged in their learning. Check out School A to Z (www.schoolatoz.com.au) and read about how this works and what you can do to help your child make friends: www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/wellbeing/development/how-friendships-boost-your-childs-learning High School: Community languages courses still open - Late enrolments are still open for the Saturday School of Community Languages. This course gives high school students the opportunity to study the language they speak at home, if a course in that language is not offered at their school or college. Students follow Board of Studies syllabuses in a choice of 25 languages. These languages are assessable as part of Stage 5 and Higher School Certificate studies. Our mission is to strive to achieve in all endeavours in a happy, caring and supportive environment.

It has been a rather hectic and busy two weeks for the SRC. We have coordinated the MLC sporting

challenge on Wednesday 14th and before that we had our Annual Crazy Hair Day on Monday 12th. The day began with our Crazy Hair Kiosk at recess, where many of our primary students and a small number of secondary students sprayed and styled their hair in all kinds of weird and wild creations. The bright colours and eccentric styles were sure to bring a smile to anyone's face. Whilst ambushing Mrs. Guthrie the SRC got the better of her and managed to spray a giant big green and white smiley face on the back of her head. Lunch time saw the SRC host a BBQ and general get together in the open area between the primary and secondary playground. Students lined up in droves and were attracted by the tempting smell of the sausages on the BBQ. After lunch we all headed over to the Gym to witness our main event; Mrs. Stace loses all her locks after a much gruelling hair auction for the rights to shave her head. Her supporting acts Harrison Reid and Joshua Campbell (year 9) also brought some excitement to the arena with some very gruelling auctions of their own. Josh's locks were auctioned off for a price of $62 with our very own Vice Captain Jake Christy winning the rights to chop those locks and to Harry's dismay, with the generous support of their dad, Harry's very own sister won her own kind of revenge on what I have been told was one very unimpressed big brother by bidding $64 and winning the rights to chop those locks. Harry had requested that his hair be collected and had organised to donate his cut hair to make a wig for a very impressed gentleman at home. Over all the SRC raised a total of $310 that will be donated to the Leukaemia Foundation on behalf of Bulahdelah Central School and Harrison and Josh. Our next event will be our year 7 welcome to high school disco, proposed date 29th March with the theme of Happily Ever After. Read on to learn more about the Hair Event. Cathryn Guthrie, SRC Coordinator.

BUZZ CUT EVENT School and Support Staff member Gemma Stace underwent a “Buzz Cut” on Monday 12th March at a special assembly. Gemma achieved her goal of $500 and more ($5365.60 as at 18/03/12) and the funds she raised will be donated to the Cancer Council to support research of pancreatic cancer for prevention/treatment/support both of patients and the families who are affected by this disease. She thanked everyone who supported her fundraising efforts, students, staff, family and friends. Reminder that donations will be accepted until the end of term 1, 5th April. (Three photos on left are Gemma before and after the Buzz Cut Event. Photo right: Auctioneer Garry Gooch)

GREAT SHAVE EVENT The Student Representative Council hosted

a Great Shave Event. Members coordinated a Crazy Hair Colour Kiosk at recess where for $2 the students could have their hair sprayed. The SRC also ran a BBQ lunch. Proceeds supported two Year 9 students, Josh Campbell and Harrison Reid who agreed to have their heads shaved. The auctioneer for the event was Gary Gooch, president Bulahdelah Show Society. Well done everyone!

PSSA TENNIS COMPETITION

Four students, Caleb Grimshaw, Klayton Haynes, Madison Hurtado and Jordyn Watt will

contest the PSSA Tennis match against Barrington Public School on Tuesday 20th March. The venue is the Gloucester Tennis Courts. These students have the opportunity to participate in sport with peers from other schools who have a similar level of ability. School sports uniform with hat, sunscreen, food and drink and water are required for this excursion. Students will also need to take their own racquet.

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS “DO” YOGA!

Middle School students have the opportunity to participate in yoga classes as part of the middle school sport program this term. Practising yoga can help students improve their flexibility, strength and concentration. A regular yoga practice will help students develop better body and mind awareness and breathing habits. Each yoga class includes breathing exercises, physical poses and finishes with a relaxation session. Yoga is not competitive and is a great opportunity for students to focus on themselves, improve their self-confidence and reach beyond perceived limitations. Many of the classes have included a few surprised faces when students have achieved poses they didn't think were possible, and there have been a few giggles as well while trying new poses! Classes are taught by local yoga teacher Janine Lee, a qualified Purna Yoga teacher. For more information contact Cath Guthrie at the school or Janine on 0413 596543

School uniform with a hat, sunscreen, insect repellant and joggers plus wet weather gear just in case is required for this excursion. Students will need to take water for the walk and their food and drink for the day. Cameras are optional. Please note that as the travel times for this excursion are outside of usual school hours, parents/guardians are requested to ensure that their student is dropped off and picked up at the school at the relevant times

MLC SPORTING DAY

On Wednesday 14th March BCS SRC held the annual MLC sports event with middle school students from Bulahdelah Central and visiting students from Tea Gardens, Booral and Bungwahl. Whilst our visitors were quite shy and reserved at the beginning of the activities they soon let their guards down and got into the spirit of the day. With team groupings combining a mixture of students from all schools the rivalries ran high. Although Bulahdelah was the strongest represented in numbers the other school gave us a run for our money in determination.

The students were split into 10 groups and each group got to play three out of five sports, with the day culminating in a final award ceremony. Many students from all schools demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and team work and many merit certificates were presented. Our most outstanding sports achievers were James Carter, Yr 7 BCS Male Sports Achiever; Stevie-Lee Smith, Yr 7 BCS Female Sports Achiever and Overall Sports Achiever was awarded to Kenyon McMahon from Tea Gardens Primary School for his outstanding effort and team work . Mitchell Blanch was awarded an extra special Chief Executive Officer Award for all of his effort, determination and management skills that assisted to make the day run like clockwork.

Cathryn Guthrie, SRC and MLC Sporting Day Coordinator.

COSI PERFORMANCE

Selected students from years 11 and 12 Standard English course will be able to attend a theatre

production of Cosi on Friday 23rd March at the Lennox Theatre. Year 12 Standard English are studying Louis Nowra’s play Cosi as a prescribed text for the HSC. This is a “Close Study of Text” and viewing a live production of the play will greatly enhance the students’ overall understanding of it as well as the theatre techniques used to explore issues within the play. School uniform is required for this excursion and students will need to take their food and drink for the day. Please note that as the travel times for this excursion are outside of usual school hours, parents/guardians are requested to ensure that their student is dropped off and picked up at the school at the relevant times.

TAREE EISTEDDFOD

Taree Eisteddfod is set down for April 30th to May 6th, term 2 week 2 – please mark these dates on your calendar. Transport arrangements will be organised when the program becomes available. Students have already submitted their entry categories to the Eisteddfod Society. Fees are due at the school administration office ASAP. A list is available at the office outlining each student’s fees. Students are practicing madly. Parents are welcome to attend the Eisteddfod. If you’re available to assist with transport please let me know. A MAD concert will be held in term 2 to showcase the talented students’ work. Details to follow. Happy acting.

COMEDY OF ERRORS

Students from years 8 to 12 have been given the

opportunity to attend a Shakespearean performance in Gloucester on Thursday 10th May. Viewing a live Shakespearean performance of A Comedy of Errors will be a wonderful experience as Shakespeare’s plays were never meant to be read. Rather, they were, and still are, meant to be viewed as a live performance. Students will enjoy this clever, farcical comedy about twins who were separated at birth. It is full of slapstick humour and wild mishaps which lead to accusations of seduction, theft, madness and even demonic possession. Notes have been distributed and they are to be returned along with the cost of $35 to the school office no later than Friday 27th April, which is the first Friday (week 1) of term 2. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2012 – 100 YEAR CELEBRATION

On Thursday March 8th, Mrs. Guthrie and Miss Scott ventured to Forster with 25 eager and ambitious young ladies to bask in the wisdom of three very inspiring local women. Our first inspirational speaker was an eccentric and quite comedic personality, Donna Muscardin. Donna is a two time cancer survivor, was the first certified Australian nurse practitioner in sexual health and is a lifelong performer and entertainer. Donna shared with us her experiences as she battled the glass ceiling in her career pursuits, medical uncertainty in her pursuit for a long and healthy life and the unreliable certainties of the entertainment industry. Donna is known in her local circles as the woman who literally rides a bike with no handle bars, in her swimmers whilst singing at the top of her voice. Why? The girls asked why Donna would make such a spectacle for herself - put simply, because she can. The one catch phrase the girls took away for this very motivational and inspiring experience was “I’M ALLOWED”. Why should we do anything we want in our lives? BECAUSE WE’RE ALLOWED. Our second speaker was Anne Maxwell, a social worker at Heartfelt Health and Wellbeing, Tuncurry. Anne’s message was plain and simple – If the Shoe Fits. Anne delivered an interactive presentation focusing on personal development, growth and self-esteem. This session emphasised the importance of decision making and making personal decisions for the RIGHT reasons and not for others. It encompassed strategies to assist young ladies to learn to love themselves, to be thankful for what they have and, above all, that it is NEVER too early or late or that we are never too young or old to change our personal situations, set goals and work towards achieving them. The motto of the session was, failing to plan results in people planning to fail. Our final speaker was Donna Carrier, a local girl born and bred in Wingham, who is the proprietor for Bent on Food Café, Bent on Cookery and Bent on Life. Donna’s message was also plain and simple - stay at school, try hard and follow your dreams. Donna reflected on her life at school and adolescence experiences. She discussed her issues with bullying and, as a result, her choice to leave school before completing year 9. Donna expressed to the girls the struggle and hardships she had to overcome as a result of not completing school and her desire to become a successful business woman. Donna emphasised the need to not to forget the important things in life – family, friends, fun, to focus on what you WANT to gain out of life and constantly working towards those goals NO MATTER WHAT. To rise above other people’s negativity, follow your passion, find someone to motivate you and make confident and close friendships in life. It was a simple message but one that seemed to ring true with many of the students who participated in the event. On completion of the workshops all participants were treated to a morning tea array consisting of fresh fruit, finger sandwiches and wraps as well as tea, coffee and fruit juice. All participants were given a small pamper pack to take home consisting of chocolates, gift certificates, baths salts and essences and many

other lovely things. There were lucky door prizes of which Bulahdelah Central School students cleaned up five of the possible 10 up for grabs. We finished the day with lunch at Forster Shopping Village and a rather revved up bus trip home. It seems that the girls’ wild sides were exposed after an hour of shopping, sugar drinks and junk food!
