A person who is confident is someone who is sure of their own abilities and qualities.

Over the past few days I have noticed a number of children exhibit wonderful qualities of compassion, empathy and confidence both in the classroom and in the playground. Confidence is something we can’t teach, but we can provide opportunities where children can gain confidence in themselves and their abilities.

Building a child’s self-esteem starts from birth. The key is “unconditional love”. If a child feels a parent’s affection, confidence will develop naturally.

As teachers we see children develop in the classroom much more when they are confident in what they are doing. Reading doesn’t seem as difficult if they have “that edge”. So how do we instil this in our children?

I was reading an article the other day about encouraging confidence in children and several aspects popped out for me. As parents we do these things but there were times when bringing up my own children I wished I had been reminded of them.

Firstly it’s important to believe in your child and show it. Let

BUILDING CONFIDENCE ... from Page 1

them know they’re a worthwhile, lovable individual. Always give praise and positive feedback. Your child will measure their worth and achievements by what you think of them.

Say “Well done, that was hard, and you managed it” This is music to young ears.

But also reassure them that it’s OK to make mistakes and that it’s all part of growing up.

This was one I don’t know that I did so well in this busy life we lead. Practise active listening and listen carefully. Repeat what you’ve heard to make sure you understand and give positive prompts to encourage your child to continue. Make sure you acknowledge their feelings and help them express them verbally: “I’m upset because ...” or “I feel happy when ...”.

Only criticise behaviour, not your child. It’s very easy to fall

into this trap, but too much criticism tells your child they’re a bad person.

Ensure you respect your child’s interests, even if they seem boring to you. Take a genuine interest in your child’s friends, and what’s happening at school.

Accept any fears or insecurities your child expresses as genuine, even if they seem trivial to you, don’t just brush them aside. If your child says “I’m useless at maths” say “You’re obviously finding maths a struggle, how can I help you?” rather than

“That’s silly” or “Well you’d better start improving”.

Each year our children amaze us when they perform in front of others. Later this year we will be rehearsing for our whole-school musical, “Bugsy Malone”, which I’ll be auditioning for at the end of this term. Instilling them with the confidence to “give it a go” and try their best is what is important.

EXTENDED LEAVEIf you are planning to take your child out of school for leave of more than a few days, e.g. a family holiday, please remember to give this information in written form to the school well in advance of the intended absence.

Please do not leave it up to your child to let the teacher know your plans – it is necessary for the school to have documentation and signatures.

Bus Safety WeekThis week is Bus Safety Week.Bus Safety Week is part of the ‘Be Bus Aware’ campaign which raises awareness for all road users on how to stay safe on and around buses, helping to reduce injuries and fatalities.

Your child is a vulnerable road user. They are still developing the skills that help them to judge the direction of sound and the speed and distance of vehicles. Your child is physically small, making it harder for drivers to see them. They may be easily distracted and tend to only be able to focus on one thing at a time. This means that they find it difficult to deal with sudden changes in the traffic environment.

Your child may be able to tell you the rules and how to keep safe near in and around vehicles, but in reality, will not always be able to apply them.

Tamworth Buslines has included a number of small videos from the Centre for Road Safety on their Facebook page which you might like to watch with your children.

You will also find information and activities to share with your children at the Safetytown web site.

Please find attached to your Newslink this week a “You can help survey” for Term 4 last year. In this survey we are seeking feedback on the Presentation Day.

Information from this survey will be presented to School Council at next month’s meeting. We value your input.
