Building Automation with the use of

PROFINET

The Sint-Jan Hospital is the major hospital

in Bruges with about 3000 employees.

Data logging in a number of departments

became a key issue in relation to FDA-

approvals. Challenges Business Challenge: Achieving FDA-approvals in

the Hospital based on a future-proof and

economical solution.

Technical Challenge: Log and monitor some

environmental conditions during the production

and storage of medical ingredients.

• Need for logging the compressor data which is

used for the production of medical air.

• Access to many analogue values such as

temperatures of the refrigerators according to

FDA approvals.

• Obtain a graphical representation of the door

locks in HMI system and generating alarms

even on mobile phones.

• Reuse of the glass fiber cables from

the existing Token Ring network.

Solution A new optical PROFINET network was created

over the entire hospital. Reusing the existing 30

years old fiber optic cables and using the new

SCALANCE X switches was all what’s needed to

create an economical and high performance

industrial network.

To capture all the inputs and outputs spread out

over the hospital several ET200S PROFINET

stations were used. Together with the use of a

central PROFINET IO controller, a CPU 315-2

PN/DP all measurements were controlled in a

central place.

By using WinCC as SCADA and implementing

some of his specific features facilitating the ob-

tainment of a FDA compliant application the last

step to FDA approval could easily be met.

Results at a glance

• No longer expensive medical ingredients disappear as waste (track & trace)

• Investment protection thanks to the reuse of 30 year old glass fiber optic cables from a Token Ring network.

• Simple integration of PROFINET

• PROFINET offers expandability for the future

Project overview

• All measurements are taken through several decentralized PROFINET field devices (Simatic ET200S PROFINET stations)

• The decentralized field devices are managed through a SIMATIC CPU 315-2 PN/DP as PROFINET IO-Controller.

• PROFINET network is equipped with SCALANCE X204-2 industrial switches and existing glass fiber optic cables.

• A switch with redundant manager func-tion (SCALANCE X202-2 IRT) is used to create a high available Ethernet- net-work.

• SCADA used: One WinCC server + CAS server and 2 WinCC clients and numerous Web Clients spread out over the hospital.

• Graphical representation of the door locks in the HMI-system and generating alarms even on mobile phones.

• Using WinCC there are some specific features included facilitating the ob-tainment of a FDA compliant applica-tion.
