Upon hearing that MOST’s Holiday Adopt-A-Family program which has brought

some much needed holiday cheer to nearly 200 families of multiples and 1000

children in need in it’s 9 years of existence was underfunded to the point of per-

haps not being able to continue to operate past it’s 10th year, I thought you and I

could do something about that through our love of knitting ;0)

In that spirit, I designed this trio of sweet seamless yoked sweaters with holiday-

themed finger puppet buddies and pockets for the benefit of MOST’s holiday

Adopt-A-Family program.

To knit sweater:

1. Using US 7 /4.50mm circular needle, cast on 100 (110, 116, 120, 130) sts and join in the round.

2. Continue in stocking stitch alternating main colour and contrast colour every six rows, until piece measures 6 (6.5,

7.5, 8, 8.5) inches. For easy jogless stripes, slip the first stitch on the second round after a colour change. You can

carry the colours on the inside—no need to cut yarn for the stripes until you split for the neck. For neater results,

complete the stripe you are working on before moving on to the next section, even if this means working a few ex-

tra rows. Put piece aside and begin knitting the sleeves.

3. Using US 7/4.50mm double pointed needles and your main colour, cast on 26 (28, 29, 30, 33) stitches for the

sleeves and join in the round. Place a marker to indicate the beginning of the round. Increase 1 stitch on either

side of the marker every 5th row until you have 34 (36, 39, 40, 43) stitches, then continue without any further in-

creases until piece measures 7 (8, 9, 10, 11) inches. On the last row, knit to 4 (4, 5, 5, 6) sts before the marker and

place the next 8 (9, 9, 10, 11) stitches on a piece of waste yarn for the underarm seam (you can remove the

marker ). Place remaining stitches on a holder and knit the other sleeve.

Needles:US 7/4.50mm 16 inch circular needle and double point needles

Gauge: 20 stitches = 4 inches in stocking stitch after blocking

Sizes: 3 (6, 12, 18, 24) months

Yarn requirements:Cascade 220, 100% Peruvian Highland Wool, 100g and 220 yards per skein

1 (1, 1, 2, 2) skeins main colour

1 (1, 1, 1, 1) skeins contrast colour

Size: 3 months 6 months 12 months 18 months 24 months

4. To join body and sleeves, knit across 42 (46, 49, 50, 54) body stitches and place the next 8 (9, 9, 10, 11) stitches

on a piece of waste yarn for the underarm. Then knit the 26 (27, 30, 30, 32) stitches of the first sleeve (leaving

the underarm stitches on a piece of waste yarn to be seamed or grafted later). Knit across 42 (46, 49, 50, 54)

body sts, place the next 8 (9, 9, 10, 11) sts on a piece of waste yarn and knit the 26 (27, 30, 30, 32) stitches of the

first sleeve. Place marker to indicate the beginning of the round. You should now have 136 (146, 158, 160, 172)

yoke stitches.

5. Continue knitting in the round resuming the 6 row stripe pattern in keeping with the body of the sweater until

piece measures 8.5 (9.5, 10.5, 11, 12).

6. On next row split for the neck opening and begin working back and forth as follows. Knit to marker. Turn work

and cast on 3 stitches. Knit these 3 stitches and then purl to the last 3 stitches before marker, knit 3 stitches.

Continue in stocking stitch but knit the first and last 3 stitches on every row to create a narrow garter band on

either side of the split neck.

7. On the next right side row, work first yoke decrease by knitting the first 3 sts, then [k2, k2tog] 33 (35, 38, 39, 42)

times and knit to end.

8. Continue in stocking stitch with 3 stitch wide garter bands on each end for 9 more rows. On the next row (right

side), work the second yoke decrease by knitting the first 3 stitches, then [k1, k2tog] 33 (36, 39, 39, 42) times

and knit to end.

9. When piece measures 11 (12, 13.5, 14, 15) inches from cast on row, work last decrease round (on a right side

row) by knitting the first 3 stitches, then [k1, k2tog] 22 (24, 26, 26, 28) times and knit to end .

10. Continue in stocking stitch without garter bands for about 1 inch and cast off loosely.

11. Sew the underarm seams using kitchener stitch.

12. To finish split neck, tuck the 3 cast on stitches beneath the other 3 garter stitches and sew the bottoms together

so that they overlap.

13. Sew small snap or hook and eye closure to the inside of the roll neck so it is not visible once closed.

14. Weave in all ends and block allowing hems and neck to roll.



To knit elf puppet:1. With US 3/3.25mm double pointed needles and main colour, cast on 16 sts and join

in the round. Knit 12 rows.

2. For collar, switch to contrast colour and knit 2 rows. On next row, [YO, K2TOG]

across. Knit 2 more rows, then fold picot collar by pushing the body of the puppet

up so that you can clearly see the inside of the puppet. Find the little purl bumps

where you changed colour for the collar and use your left hand needle to pick up

the first of these bumps, knit it together with the next stitch on your needle. Con-

tinue this way all around.

3. Switch to face colour and knit 7 rows.

4. To shape top, K2TOG all the way around (8 sts remain), cut yarn and pull tightly

through remaining stitches. Secure to the inside of the puppet.

5. For hat, cast on 16 sts. and join in the round. Knit 8 rows. On next row, K2TOG all

the way around (8 sts remain). Knit 8 more rows, then K2TOG until 2 sts remain.

Cut yarn and pull through remaining sts. With a tapestry needle secure end to the

inside of the hat. Use the tail end from your cast on to sew hat to puppet at a slight

angle so hat meets the collar at the back but reveals the face at the front. Fold the

hat slightly if desired and secure with a few stitches.

6. For pompom, cut two 3 inch strands of a contrasting yarn and pull a loop through

the very tip with a crochet hook. Pull the ends through this loop and pull tightly to

secure. Trim pompom to desired length.

Approx. 10 yards worsted weight yarn for puppets, approx. 30 yards worsted weight yarn for

pockets, embroidery thread, and tapestry needle

Gauge 24 sts = 4 inches in stockinette stitch on US #3/3.25mm needles

Left wing:

Row 1 and all wrong side rows : sl 1, purl to last st, sl 1 Row 2: Increase 1 st at each end of row (5 sts)

Row 4: increase 1 st at end of row (6 sts) Rows 6, 8, 10: knit to last 2 sts, k2tog

Row 12: cut yarn and pull through remaining 3 sts

Right wing:

To knit penguin puppet:

To knit snowman puppet:

1. With US 3/3.25mm double pointed needles, cast on 16 sts and join in the round.

Knit 20 rows. To shape top, K2TOG around (8 sts remain), cut yarn and pull tightly

through remaining sts. Secure to the inside of the puppet.

2. Knit hat as per elf puppet instructions.

3. For beak, knit a 4 stitch i-cord for 2 rounds, cut yarn and pull through stitches. Sew

to front of puppet.

4. For tummy, cast on 6 sts and knit 6 rows in stocking stitch. Decrease 1 stitch at the

beginning and end of the next 2 rows and cast of remaining stitches. Using tail

ends, sew to front of puppet.

5. For wings, cast on 3 stitches and shape as per the table below. Sew cast on edge to

sides

1. With US 3/3.25mm double pointed needles, cast on 16 sts and join in the round.

Knit 20 rows. To shape top, K2TOG around (8 sts remain), cut yarn and pull tightlythrough remaining sts. Secure to the inside of the puppet.

2. For hat, cast on 32 sts and join in the round. Purl 1 row. On next row, K2TOG around

(16 sts remain). Knit 7 rounds. To shape top, purl 1 row, knit 2 rows, cut yarn and pull

through stitches. Fold brim to shape and sew base of hat to top of snowman.

3. For beak, knit a 2 stitch i-cord for 3 rounds, cut yarn and pull through stitches. Sew

to front of puppet (save yourself some weaving in of these ends by simply tying

them into a square knot on the inside of the puppet and securing it with a dab of

clear nail polish.

4. For scarf, cast on 30 sts and cast off on next row. Tie around puppet (best to do thiswhile it is on your finger to ensure it is not too tight) and use tails to sew to puppet.

To knit gift box pocket :

Buddy Sweater

1. For box, cast on 18 sts with US3/3.25mm needles. Work 12 rows in stocking stitch. On next

wrong side row, knit across. Cast off all stitches. Sew sides and bottom to front of sweater.

2. For lid, cast on 18 sts. Knit 2 rows. Cast off all stitches and sew to front of sweater at a slight

angle

3. For bow, cast on 8 sts. Cast off. Fold in half and sew middle to the lid.

4. If desired, use a contrasting yarn to embroider gift box.

To knit ski slope pocket :1. For large mountain, cast on 26 sts. Continue in stocking stitch decreasing one stitch at the begi

ning and end of every 4th row two times, then every 2nd row 4 times (10 sts remain). Decrease

one stitch at the beginning and end of every row 2 times. Cast off remaining 6 sts.

2. For small mountain, cast on 20 sts. Continue in stocking stitch decreasing one stitch at the be-

ginning and end of every 4th row two times, then every 2nd row 3 times (10 sts remain). Decrea

one stitch at the beginning and end of every row 2 times. Cast off remaining 6 sts.

3. Using tails, sew mountains to front of sweater with the large mountain overlapping the smaller

one by 1.5 inches. Leave opening at the sides facing the centre to create a pocket for your budd

4. For evergreen trees, cast on 6 sts. Working in stocking stitch, decrease 1 st at beginning and en

of every 4th row two times. Cut yarn and pull through remaining sts. Make as many as you like

and sew to slopes.

To knit igloo pocket :

1. Using light blue yarn, cast on 25 sts. Row 1 (right side): knit Row 2: switch to white, [sl1, p5] 4 times, sl1 Row 3: [sl1, p5] 4 times, sl1 Rows 4: [sl1, k5] 4 times, sl1 Row 5: [sl1, p5] 4 times, sl1 Row 6: switch to blue and purl across Row 7: knit Row 8: switch to white, sl1, p2, [sl1, p5] 3 times, sl1, p2, sl1 Row 9: sl1, p2, [sl1, p5] 3 times, sl1, p2 Row 10: sl1, k2, [sl1, k5] 3 times,sl1, k2, sl1 Row 11: sl1, p2, [sl1, p5] 3 times, sl1, p2 Row 12: switch to blue and purl across Row 13-18: same as rows 1 to 6 Rows 19: k6, cast off 14 sts, cast on 14 sts and k to end (this will create a large button hole foryour buddy to sneak into)

2. To knit north pole, work a 5 stitch i-cord purlwise in alternating 1 row stripes for 1.5 inches. Cutyarn and pull through sts. To make ball on top, cast on 16 sts, knit 1 row then purl 1 row. Cutyarn and pull through all stitches, sew ball to top of pole near igloo.
