MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

MARK DUMEZ

Welcome to the first show of our 2013 season. We are thrilled to stage “the world’s most successful rock ‘n’ roll musical” – produced, built and rehearsed right here in Chemainus. This show is all about access and nostalgia – a way to invite people from across the Island to celebrate their youth, vitality and excitement.

Along with a diverse mainstage playbill this year, the Chemainus Theatre Festival will also impact the region in other unique ways. This spring, our teen theatre troupe will interview and stage stories from elders in care facilities – stories about resilience. The Island Stories Community Collective invites anyone to submit their story, dance or song to be performed on the Chemainus Theatre Festival stage with all the professional tools at their disposal. Munsch To Say will combine local languages to “reframe” Canada’s most popular children stories in a regional context. For those literary types – we have created Playwright Pairings – where members of our current cast will perform staged readings of established playwrights, paired with a unique food. We will be starting with Chekhov and Chocolates in March. Our website will be updated as the year progresses.

The Chemainus Theatre Festival is a society dedicated to theatre that explores and nourishes the human spirit – theatre with heart and soul. Whether that’s through immensely popular musicals like Buddy Holly, stunning dramas, off-the-wall comedies or programs for the Island community like those mentioned above, we remain dedicated to making Vancouver Island a great place to live, work and play.

MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR

DIRECTOR’S NOTES

SARA-JEANNE HOSIECharles Hardin Holley, known to us as Buddy Holly, did what so many artists long to do. He made an everlasting mark in this world through his extraordinary talent. Determined, passionate, beautifully awkward, and honest, Buddy Holly, in an all-too brief career, changed the face of popular music.

As a singer/songwriter myself, and someone familiar with iconic life storytelling (Patsy Cline), I am truly honored and humbled to help bring Buddy’s story to life. I have been gifted with a team of talented artists, musicians, designers, and technical wizards; led beautifully by the seasoned and charismatic Zachary Stevenson. I hope this date to the theatre will gift many of you with a trip down memory lane, and perhaps some, with a new found passion for this remarkable artist.

Whether you write music, play music, or listen to music, Buddy’s story challenges us all to live fully, speak boldly, dream big and to cherish every note… every moment. And hey, if that pair of eccentric glasses you bought make you happy… wear’em!

“One of the main things about the Beatles is that we started out writing our own material. People these days take it for granted that you do, but nobody used to then. John and I started to write because of Buddy Holly. It was like, ‘Wow! he writes and is a musician.... in our imaginations back then, John was Buddy and I was Little Richard or Elvis.”

—Paul McCartney of the Beatles, The Beatles Anthology, 2000

Page 7: Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story

At the Chemainus Theatre Festival, we’ve been reliving the days when the music of Bill Haley and The Comets, Elvis Presley, and Jerry Lee Lewis filled the airwaves. While the 1950’s saw the rise of many famous performers, the most inspiring tale is of one man who dominated the charts and revolutionized the country music scene - all in a mere 18 months.

We’re thrilled to present Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story, a jukebox musical that celebrates the short-lived career of an historic rock ‘n’ roll legend – and celebrate we have! The entire Festival team has been inspired by Holly’s unique gangly style, novel use of music phrasing and glottal stops (which became a hallmark of his “devil’s music”), and his dramatic life tale. Despite the decades since his untimely death, we continue to find his sound impossible to resist.

Reviving Buddy was no small endeavour. The show moves swiftly from moments of nerdy charm to hothead hyperactivity, stubborn smarts to artistic genius, and times of emotional turmoil. As we explored deeper into his dream of “playing his music his way”, we realized just how impressively talented Holly, and his band The Crickets, were – pure performers; no tricks, no air guitar.

It was all about the music for Holly, and The Festival’s artistic team has done him proud. Countless hours have been spent dancing across the stage (and up the aisles) as we prepared over 20 of Holly’s greatest hits. If practice makes perfect, we’re sure you’ll find every note from Holly’s first hit single, That’ll Be The Day, to his

Alan JanesWritten by

final performance with the Big Bopper (Chantilly Lace) and Ritchie Valens (La Bamba) to be pure entertainment.

While we enjoy the happy moments of Holly’s story, the times of strife and

tragedy are just as important to understanding his incredible achievements. Just as the world was getting used

to his new kind of music, a 1959 plane crash took the 22 year-old’s life (along with fellow musicians The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens). The loss was mourned far and wide, and has become a global legend. Since opening in London’s West End in 1989, Buddy, written by Alan Janes, has become the “world’s most successful rock ‘n’ roll musical”. Over 22 million music fans have seen the show - from the UK to Broadway, and throughout the Americas, South Africa, Norway, Japan, Israel, Iceland, and beyond.

Mastering the fast-moving scenes of songs and narrative is director and choreographer, Sara-Jeanne Hosie, whom audiences may recognize from recent The Chemainus Theatre Festival productions Chickens (2012) and A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline (2011). Her musical theatre experience, both on and off stage, have struck the perfect balance between rollicking concert fun and emotionally-charged dramatics. The essence of the famous performer is alive and well under Hosie’s leadership.

Also alive and well is veteran Buddy star, Zachary Stevenson. Assuming the title role, he shows passion for (and uncanny reflection of ) the iconic songwriter and composer. Stevenson ignites hit after hit, and inspires a top-notch ensemble of highly-energetic triple-threats.

Holly had a short career, but left a big story to tell, and our cast flawlessly assumes multiple roles to meet the challenge. Our thanks to: Kraig Waye (Joe B. Mauldin/Dion), Danny Balkwill (Jerry Allison/MC), Greg Barry (Hipockets Duncan/Big Bopper), Jess Amy Shead

(Maria Elena/Snow Bird), Darren Burkett (Ritchie Valens), Scott Perrie (Hayrider/4th Cricket), Christopher King (Norman Petty/Hayrider), Craig Salkeld (Murray Deutch/Hayrider), Janet Gigliotti (Vi Petty/ Snow Bird/Jingle Singer), Sarah Carlé (Peggy Sue/Hayrider/Jingle Singer), and Jenni Burke (Apollo Performer/

Snow Bird) for dedicating their talent to the show.

We applaud the production team who have re-created the scene of 1950’s hellfire and nostalgia, including: Omanie Elias, Set Designer; Rebekah Johnson, Lighting Designer; Norma Bowen, Costume Designer; Paul Tedeschini, Sound Designer and David Baughan, Stage Manager.

It has been a pleasure to bring Buddy to the Chemainus Theatre Festival, and we welcome you to relive Holly’s own creative exhaustion, his urge to break away from tradition, and the freedom of letting the rock ‘n’ roll spirit take over!

Adapted from Moliére’s Scapin

Things are about to get physical - and everything becomes a farce – when the Chemainus Theatre Festival presents Delicious Lies, April 26 to May 18.

In a special adaptation of the 1671 farce Les Fourberies De Scapin, by French playwright Moliére, we discover just how far the truth can be twisted before fraying out of control. This unique adaptation fuses elements of spaghetti western, circus and the predecessor of vaudeville and Seinfeld – the commedia dell’ arte - to create a vibrant and playful world.

Scapin, Geronte’s scampy servant, employs schemes like a house of cards in order to help young lovers find their matches. The fun comes because he has one version of truth – his own. In his latest caper, Scapin has agreed to help his young charge, Léandre, and his friend save their relationships with two mysterious, penniless beauties.

The boy’s parents have just returned from a trip and brought their own conflicting marriage plans for their respective sons - but cash is the only way by which the young lovers can follow their hearts.

Sly Scapin concocts a ruse of pulled strings and deceptive schemes to help them all, while he helps himself. As his efforts to deceive the family patriarchs into parting with large sums of money collide, and with farcical style Scalping spins bigger and bigger yarns of deception!

Kidnapping, foreigners, ransom ...how far will Scapin go to win (and exact a little revenge of his own)? Will his tomfoolery finally cause him to flee? And just who are the penniless beauties behind this web of Delicious Lies? See everything unravel this spring when the Chemainus Theatre Festival brings love, loss and clownish mayhem to the stage!

Cast: Ben Elliott (Countryside Christmas), Darren Burkett (Oklahoma!, Guys and Dolls, Buddy), Timothy E. Brummond (The 39 Steps), Ella Simon, Tom Jones and Island favourites Brian Linds, Samantha Currie and Michelle Lieffertz.

Ages: 13+. Tickets available at chemainustheatre.ca or 1-800-565-7738.
