Course in Depth

What will I study?

In Year 1 you will study the fundamentals of business andmanagement. You will gain an understanding of businessrelationships and processes, management techniques andeconomic markets.

Year 2 enhances your core knowledge of business andmanagement by allowing you to follow a number ofcompulsory modules alongside options enabling you totailor your degree towards your future career planswithin a leisure and tourism environment.

In Year 3 you will study a variety of contemporarybusiness issues with an emphasis on leisure and tourism,in addition to strategic management. You will alsocomplete a piece of independent research through adissertation, or research based project which enables youto work on a relevant, agreed topic of your choice.

How will I study?

As well as preparing for and attending lectures, seminars,tutorials and workshops, you will spend time reading andcompleting coursework, including written assignments,presentations and posters.

You will have the opportunity to develop youremployability profile through work-related learning orparticipation in a graduate enterprise project. In addition,you will undertake live client projects with organisationsor work on agreed projects with real outcomes andimpact.

How will I be assessed?

Throughout the programme, there is a combination ofdifferent forms of assessment to test intellectualdevelopment, vocational capability and critical thinking.Coursework involves individual and group-basedactivities, case studies and problem-solving exercises.Examinations take a variety of forms, using both seen andunseen questions.

This comes at a cost and you will also consider the ethical issues around a world where your movements,habits and hobbies can be quantified, anticipated, profiled and packaged for profit.

Web design isthe art of creating websites that are attractive and easy to use whilst achieving the marketing objectives of theorganisation. This module will provide you with an appreciation of the multiplicity of roles of a website and the rangeof audiences for which one must be designed.

The module seeks to challenge current attitudes to conservation and develop a high level of criticalthinking. Case studies include both urban and rural environments.

With an increasing emphasis being placed on market positioning based around price rather than quality,as well as spontaneous, unplanned and poorly managed leisure and tourism developments, there has been abreakdown of environmental capacities and the spoiling of the quality of facilities, leisure spaces and destinations. Theresult is that economic, social and environmental indicators consistently show that development is no longersustainable in its present form. You will consider this 'digital economy', the key conceptsunderpinning commercial activities and investigate how the application of existing theories of competitive advantageand added value can be applied to, or are changed by, digital goods and services that have no physical form.

BUS3031: Global LGlobal Logistics and International Togistics and International Trradeade (20 credits)Global LGlobal Logistics and International Togistics and International Trradeade examines, in a global context, the set of processes required to strategicallymanage materials and product flows from suppliers through to the final customer in order to achieve competitiveadvantage. The module looks at the theoretical background of logistics and considers the practical perspectives oflogistics from an international trade perspective. You will consider how effective logistics and procurement systemscan become key business enablers and contemplate how international supply chains must form a significant element ofthe strategy of any organisation operating on a global basis.

BUS3033: DeDevvelopment Economicselopment Economics (20 credits)DeDevvelopment Economicselopment Economics discusses the key economic, social and political factors responsible for economicdevelopment and growth. In particular, the module provides an insight into economic theories analysing thedevelopment patterns across different countries and explaining differences. You will consider what factors effectivelyenhance or hinder economic growth and explore the relationship of economic development with national andinternational institutions, macro-economic policy and foreign direct investment. The role of civil society and theenvironment on economic development will also be examined, as will socio-economic issues such as poverty andinequality.

BUS3034: ContemporContemporary Issues in Economicsary Issues in Economics (20 credits)ContemporContemporary Issues in Economicsary Issues in Economics provides you with an understanding of, and an ability to critically analyse,contemporary issues in economics. Economic theories and understanding established earlier in the programme will beutilised to analyse contemporary economic situations and policies. The module will cover current, significant economicevents both nationally and internationally, in respect of both the economic situation and policy. All issues will beconsidered from the perspective of business and management.

BUS3036: StrStrategic Human Resource Managementategic Human Resource Management (20 credits)StrStrategic Human Resource Managementategic Human Resource Management critically investigates how far human relationships are central to StrategicHuman Resource Management (SHRM). The module takes a cross disciplinary approach making content as relevant tohealth and education as it is to sport, events management or any other organisational setting which requires peoplemanagement. We will place the module inside the globalised context with a focus on developments in cross industry,cross continent context where the ‘soft’ rhetoric of people as an organisation’s greatest assets often collides with the'hard' reality that 'people' constitute only a part of an organisations strategic thinking and are used like any other assetor resource.

Topics covered will include institutional racism, policitians’ expenses, and the Liborinterest rate scandal. We will critically review such instances of personal and institutional misbehaviour to understandwhy it appears so difficult for organisation’s and their employees to act in a way which is both ethical and aligns withthe moral norms we expect from our principal institutions.

BUS3039: Global MarkGlobal Marketing Managementeting Management (20 credits)Global MarkGlobal Marketing Managementeting Management encourages you to develop an informed appreciation of international marketing in thecontext of emerging world markets and increasing globalisation. The module provides you with the means to integrateaspects of operational marketing within a strategic and international perspective. In particular, you will study how andwhy companies choose to operate internationally, the entry strategies available to them, globalisation and theinternational marketing environment.

BUS3040: MarkMarketing and Societyeting and Society (20 credits)MarkMarketing and Societyeting and Society will help you to define and understand how marketing in society is utilised as a tool for publicservices such as charities, government and the health service. This will involve the study of the business and socialenvironments in terms of their target audiences, resources, planning, education and current changes. The module willfamiliarise you with key models of behaviour change and the role of stakeholders, values, beliefs, emotions andlifestyles in influencing such change, with emphasis on environmentally sustainable behaviour. You will also beintroduced to a practical and reflective campaign process that supports the use of social marketing to achievebehaviour change.

BUS3041: AdvAdvertising in Markertising in Marketing Communicationseting Communications (20 credits)AdvAdvertising in Markertising in Marketing Communicationseting Communications enables you to study the role of advertising in online and offline integratedmarketing communications strategies. You will drill into the elements that comprise individual adverts and considerhow the range of online and offline media vehicles available to deliver them have blurred the boundaries betweenadvertising and other elements of the promotional mix. It is important that you understand the strategic role ofadvertising and the rationale that underpins the design and development of individual adverts. In addition, you need tounderstand the place of advertising within the marketing communications techniques available to marketers, whilstunderstanding the effects advertising has on the consumer and the debates that emanate from those effects.

BUS3042: MarkMarketing Simulationeting Simulation (20 credits)MarkMarketing Simulationeting Simulation is designed to provide an understanding of marketing management and planning and to engageyou in the marketing decision-making process via the use of a marketing simulation package. Working in a group, youwill analyse the marketing environment, undertake competitor analysis, manage the marketing mix, and decide thepositioning of your product portfolio.

BUS3044: Entrepreneurship and InnoEntrepreneurship and Innovationvation (20 credits)Entrepreneurship and InnoEntrepreneurship and Innovationvation considers how to turn a good idea into a successful market-leadingproduct. Entrepreneurship and innovation go hand in hand and involve the development and release of a new product/service or the repacking of an existing one to provide competitive advantage or even create new markets. This moduleexplores a variety of concepts around strategic entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship. We will examine thedifference between an idea, an invention and an innovation and provide you with a case-led understanding of theprocess in action, from creation to implementation. Moreover, it provides you with a number of tools and techniques tocritically evaluate success and build on your previous experiences of work-based learning or enterprise education.

LTM3005: EvEvents Managementents Management (20 credits)EvEvents Managementents Management focuses on the events industry, an important and economically dynamic part of the leisure andtourism industry. Each year, an increasing number and variety of events occur throughout the United Kingdom.Business, sporting, cultural and mega-events dominate the media, utilise and dominate transport systems, and fillhotels. They provide an important source of wealth, giving an important boost to economies, generating revenue andemployment. Though the benefits are often well publicised, event management is often problematic as organisersattempt to balance perceived benefits against a range of impacts. This module deals with these issues and allowsyou to reflect upon the practice of event management and consider the key problems associated with hosting events.

If you studied Language modules in Years 1 and 2, you may wish to study a further Language module in Year 3. Thiswould form an integral part of your degree in place of one of the optional modules above.

Optional modules provide an element of choice within the programme curriculum. The availability of optional modulesmay vary from year to year and will be subject to minimum student numbers being achieved. This means that theavailability of specific optional modules cannot be guaranteed. Optional module selection may also be affected bytimetabling requirements.

Timetables

Timetables for your first week are normally available at the end of August prior to enrolment in September. You canexpect to receive your timetable for the rest of the academic year during your first week. Please note that while wemake every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place onany day of the week. Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities.

Upon successful completion of this degree, you will beentitled to Associate Member status of the CharteredManagement Institute (ACMI)

As a BSc (Hons) Business and Management with Leisureand Tourism graduate, you will be qualified to work inareas such as leisure and tourism, accountancy,administration, banking, education, finance, humanresource management, marketing, public sectormanagement, retailing, small and medium sizedenterprise management, general management, andspecialist functions. Tuition Fees

If you are a prospective UK or EU student who will bejoining this undergraduate degree in academic year2017/18, the tuition fee will be £9,250 perannum. Tuition fees for international students enrollingon the programme in academic year 2017/18 are£11,575 per annum.

The University may administer a small inflationary rise intuition fees, in line with Government policy, insubsequent academic years as you progress through thecourse.
