Welcome to our website for the 7th edition of our Limpopo Tourism & Leisure Magazine. Our book is in distribution and now our website is up and running for your pleasure and use! With the Limpopo Tourism & Leisure experience we bring Limpopo Province to you as a package and aim to provide you with as much information and guidance as possible. We start the journey in Polokwane, exploring the urban feel of Limpopo’s capital, from there we move on to the misty mountains of Haenertsburg to enjoy our own little England. Then on to the tropical biosphere of Limpopo and the wide variety of fruit plantations of Tzaneen. Next up is the lovely lowveld in which the town of Hoedspruit is nestled; where after, we visit the gateway to the Kruger… Phalaborwa, in all its glory. From there, on to the North, to the mystical Soutpansberg and we end in the beautiful Waterberg. Enjoy!

This being our 7th edition, but my

personal first, was a great & exciting

experience, which I wouldn’t exchange

for anything.

I wanted to stay true to the recipe

that clearly worked for the previous 6

editions & just add a touch of my own

personality.

We decided to work on a smaller

edition, to truly focus on that which is

extraordinary.

We start in Polokwane, exploring the

urban feel of Limpopo’s capital, from

there we move on to the misty mountains

of Haenertsburg to enjoy our own

little England. Then on to the tropical

biosphere of Limpopo & the wide variety

of fruit plantations of Tzaneen. Next up

is the lovely lowveld in which the town

of Hoedspruit is nestled; where after,

we visit the gateway to the Kruger...

Phalaborwa in all its glory. From there

on we move North, to the mystical

Soutpansberg & end our journey in the

beautiful Waterberg.

I trust that our magazine will guide

you through your journey to the most

interesting places to see, the most

exciting things to do, the most excuisite

places to eat, the most unique places

to shop & the most relaxing places to

sleep.

With all said and done I want to

dedicate this magazine to all the people

that supported & encouraged me in this

new experience. I’m not going to recall

any names, you all know who you are.

Thanks a million!

Kind regards,

Mignon du Plessis

WeatherFinding itself in the northernmost area of South Africa and bisected by the tropic of Capricorn, visitors to Limpopo can expect sunshine, long summer afternoons and dry days for most of their stay. Polokwane, lies more or less in the centre of the Limpopo province and its weather is reflective of most of it. Only the region east of the city, Haenertsburg/Tzaneen offers a notable different climate. Most of the subtropical conditions of the Lowveld provide weather more suited to dense forests.

The average midday temperatures for Polokwane range from 19.2°C in June to 26.6°C in January. The region is the coldest during July when the mercury drops to 3.1°C on average during the night & goes up to 16 during summer nights.

The lowveld is less forgiving in the swelter of summer afternoons, with towns such as Phalaborwa known to reach 45ºC. Generally, however, visitors to the Kruger National Park area can expect temperatures around 30ºC in summer.

Don’t be surprised to find late afternoons growing heavy with clouds and you can expect short thunderstorms. Winter is typical of the interior highveld plateau. A sunny season of chilly, early mornings, warm middays, dry afternoons and cool to cold nights. In general the weather of Limpopo will greet you with a hospitable display of sunshine and clear skies.

Limpopo province is the northernmost province, of the southernmost country in South Africa, bordering the countries of Zimbabwe, Mozambique & Botswana & proudly home to 5 unique districts, with totally different landscapes. This staggering province gives you a bit of everything. Crop & cattle farming, game hunting, luxurious lodges, adventure activities & many more. Truly, this is any tourist’s dream destination.Covering the landscape of 125,755 square kilometers & 10.3 % of South Africa’s land area, it is highly unlikely to get enough of this beautiful piece of earth.70% of the world renowned Kruger National Park is situated in Limpopo province. This vast wilderness area stretches from the Limpopo River in the North, through the Pafuri, Punda Maria, Phalaborwa and Orpen gates, to the Crocodile River in the South. It is no

wonder that this province is known as “the preferred eco-tourism destination”.

The sprawling metropolis of Limpopo by no means rivals Johannesburg or Cape Town for size, but Polokwane holds a considerable number of aces up its sleeve. This city of amazing contrasts is a colourful fusion of urban life and rural persuasion. It is the gateway to the Kruger National Park, Mozambique and Zimbabwe and provides a home to discerning businesspeople and travellers. Found during the gold rush in the

1880’s, the city was originally named Pietersburg after General Piet Joubert. In 2002 the city was renamed Polokwane, a Sotho word that means “Place of Safety” and proudly upholds its name with a low crime rate. Polokwane, with its tree-lined streets, bustling CBD, vibrant history, art, culture, natural beauty and wealth of diversions offers a bit of everything to all. The city, said to be the fastest growing in the southern hemisphere, provides

tourists with a range of affordable and upmarket accommodation at world-class lodges, guesthouses and hotels. Visitors can enjoy action packed activities from paintball to go-carting, enjoy local and contemporary fare at unique restaurants and discover the local passion for art and culture at museums, galleries and shops. Polokwane’s most endearing quality is the vast natural beauty it’s set in, providing the allure of the rugged Bushveld as a memorable backdrop.

POLOKWANE

The Great Escape

Jacaranda RMFM

Making WavesThe “soundtrack to your life”, Jacaranda RMFM scores hit after hit with a uniquely local flair that remains contemporary and stylish. Based in one of Polokwane’s affluent suburbs, RMFM broadcasts in the greater part of Limpopo, Mpumalanga and now also the Kruger National Park. The station might only broadcast for four hours a day, but presenter Miguel Proenca gives listeners a jam packed show with great music, need-to-know information, competitions and local news. RMFM is the station of choice to a number of shopping centres, hotels and restaurants and often take the show on the road with live broadcasts at festivals, shows and other great activities.

If the age old adage holds true that it’s not the destination that matters, but the journey, then Polokwane International Airport provides the ultimate journey to a premier destination. In recent years the airport has undergone quite a transformation with extensive expansions to the terminal building, navigational aid and the Aero City that provides ample parking for cars, busses, taxis and rental cars. The airport, situated 5

kilometres north of Polokwane, is a state-of-the-art facility and logistical hub for cargo and passenger transport. The airport is also a convenient gateway to Southern Africa with chartered flights to Botswana and Zimbabwe. Currently SA Airlink is the only active commercial carrier, offering daily flights to and from Johannesburg.

Polokwane SmelterAnglo Platinum’s Polokwane Smelter is the only platinum-producing smelter on the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld Igneous Complex. The latter contains some of the richest ore deposits in the world, including platinum, iron and titanium. The smelter, situated some 15 kilometres from Polokwane, was commissioned in 2003 and receives wet concentrate from various mines and concentrators, including Modikwa, Lebowa and Union. The concentrate is then smelted to produce furnace matte. The smelter underwent its first major rebuild in 2010 and remains an important component to Anglo Platinum’s success.

What to see...

The Modjadji Cycad Reserve is no ordinary forest. Not only because it takes its name from a proud lineage of rain-making queens, but also because it boasts some of the oldest and largest Cycad specimens on earth. The reserve is home of the world’s largest concentration of a single-species cycad that grow over a metre high and bear cones that weigh up to 34kg. The reserve offers panoramic views of the Lowveld, bar the usual cloud of mist that blankets the valley below. Visitors can lose themselves in the winding trails with a distinct prehistoric feel and plenty of opportunities to spot a variety of game and bird species. The reserve is also a prime picnic spot and traditional huts are ideal for a unique stay in the enchanting Modjadjiskloof area.

Sunland Baobab

The Magic Tree It once graced the cover of the Wall Street Journal. It is probably older than the Giza Pyramids and is the central character to a number of myths and legends. Not bad for a tree. The Sunland Baobab in Modjadjiskloof, however, is definitely no ordinary tree. Estimated to be ±6 000 years old, 22 meters high and 47 meters in circumference – there is a good reason why people flock from far and wide to stand in its magnificent shade. The Sunland Baobab’s hollow trunk is also a popular bar and wine cellar. The Sunland farm is a beautiful setting of mango and avocado plantations, a nursery and prime quad biking country.

The steep mountain slope between Haenertsburg and Tzaneen, Magoebaskloof, is named after one of the area’s most fascinating historic characters. The ‘Kloof takes its name from the legendary King Makgoba, leader of the Tlou people, who successfully protected his mountaintop domain from the Boers between

1888 and 1895. However in 1895 the fearless king met with a sticky end in his beloved mountain kingdom after he was slain by Swazi impis. To prove to the Boers that they killed King Makgoba, the impis cut off his head. To this day the king’s final resting place remains a secret as does the whereabouts of his head.

Limpopo abounds with legends and heroes, but few can rival the long list of achievements and repute of Dr. Hans Merensky. A geologist, prospector, scientist, nature conservationist and philanthropist – Merensky’s lifetime spans a notable career that ensconced him in the pages of South African history. Born in 1871 in the unassuming town of Botshabelo in the then Eastern Transvaal (now Mpumalanga), Merensky is known most for his discovery of the greatest mineral deposits known to man. This includes the vast platinum reefs at Rustenburg and Mokopane (Potgietersrus), an enormous vermiculite area, phosphates and copper at Phalaborwa and the world’s largest chrome deposit at Jagdlust, south-east of Polokwane. Merensky died in 1952, but his legend lives on in a proud legacy that continues to carry on his conservation work.

Doubtlessly one of the country’s premier backpacking destinations, the Wolkberg Biosphere is a wonderland of beautiful valleys, breathtaking ravines, enchanting forests, pristine rivers, waterfalls and towering mountain peaks. The reserve is situated north-east of Polokwane, intimately close to the charming village of Haenertsburg and beckons tourists to wander into its colourful depths via the many hiking routes. Geared

with pack, staff and boots, hikers can marvel at Limpopo’s highest peak The Iron Crown. The Wolkberg Biosphere Reserve is also home to a wealth of animal and bird species, ensuring amazing encounters on your trek through absolutely stunning terrain. The Wolkberg, which forms part of the Drakensberg and Strydpoort ranges, is definitely not for the faint hearted and a tough challenge even for the fittest hiker.

A GOLD RUSHThe picturesque village of Haenertsburg was established in 1886 following the discovery of gold in the area by Carl Ferdinand Haenert. Today, tourists can visit the long depleted gold mines, but will soon discover that there is more to Haenertsburg than the remnants of the bygone glory days. The charming village is surrounded by mountains, lush with vegetation and a prime destination for a number of adventure activities, including biking, fishing

and cycling. The village is home to a variety of interesting shops, including fantastic lunch and dinner options. Local historian, Professor Louis Changuion has published an extensive range of books and articles on Haenertsburg’s history, offering an intimate re-discovery of mist-shrouded days or yore. Tourists can learn more about the village’s history from the open-air museum in Mare Street above the municipal offices.

In the early 1930’s, as Limpopo was in the grips of an extremely serious malaria problem, a major battle against the disease was waged with Dr. Siegfried Annecke on the frontline. At the time an average of 4 000 patients were in desperate need of malaria treatment, but Dr. Annecke’s efforts soon resulted in a steady decrease of malaria incidences and by 1966 cases had dropped to none. However, health officials failed to heed Annecke’s warning that the war on malaria was far from over and 1972 led to another outbreak affecting over 2 000 people. A disheartened Annecke took his own life, convinced that his work had been pointless. Today the Siegfried Annecke Research Institute in Tzaneen carries on the doctor’s good work through continued malaria and bilharzia research.

An integral part of Limpopo’s allure is undoubtedly the many fascinating wildlife species that call this majestic province home. However, a number of elements threaten their existence and compromise their natural freedom. Luckily an extraordinary organisation called SanWild continues to fight passionately to protect Limpopo’s wildlife for future generations. Their wildlife sanctuary is situated just 60 kilometres from Tzaneen where rescued and rehabilitated animals have been given a new lease on life. SanWild’s Wildlife Response Unit is but one of the many initiatives aimed at assisting wild animals in need. It comprises a network of caring individuals that act as a panic button for injured or orphaned animals. Members of the public can play an active role in assisting the unit by contacting the 24-hour emergency response line on 083 310 3882 or [email protected] if you come across any animal in need.

With picnic basket in hand, take a leisurely stroll to Haenertsburg Cemetery for an unconventional but breathtaking lunch spot that offers a stunning view of the valley below. The cemetery is especially popular at night as a romantic picnic spot amid interesting tombstones with epitaphs that tell the story of the area’s past. The cemetery is just a 1 kilometre walk from town and a great start to the many hiking trails in the area.

signs of spring... Enchanting in winter, the quaint Haenertsburg village only really blossoms around spring when the mountain roads and gardens burst at the seams with colour. To visitors it appears as if someone carelessly sprinkled seeds in the area, creating a bouquet of sweet-smelling and beautiful flowers. The village is especially famous for its brightly coloured azaleas and Japanese cherry blossoms that cover the village like a beautiful quilt. The village allows visitors to really indulge in the freshness of spring with many paths and routes waiting to be explored and discovered. The Cheerio Gardens are a must see during spring and its tea garden, overlooking a pond, is a charming lunch spot. For more information contact Sarah on 083 355 0835 or [email protected]

LEGEN-DAIRY

What to do...If you are in the Magoebaskloof area, there is absolutely no excuse not to spend an idyllic day with the family at the foot of the magnificent Debegeni Falls. The falls are situated in a protected nature reserve and are a popular braai and picnic destination. The falls form a succession of cascades over a sloping rock that eventually leads to a pot-shaped pool. The rock pools are great for a refreshing dip in chilly waters, while braver souls prefer using the smooth rock surface as a slide. Be warned though, that while extremely fun, it is dangerous and caution should be practised before you embark on the joyride.

As its name suggests, Lekgalameetse (Place of Water) is a wondrous and romantic destination with its pristine rivers, waterfalls, forests, lush kloofs and fluttering butterflies. The reserve forms part of the Drakensberg Mountain Range and is situated between Tzaneen and Hoedspruit. Its captivating depths are home to the elusive narina trogon and samango monkeys that make play of their treetop kingdoms. The grassy hills of Lekgalameetse are particularly beautiful when covered in thousands of either white or purple-red acacias. The reserve has a number of accommodation options that cater for couples, small groups and school trips. Lekgalameetse is most popular for the spectacular birding it has to offer, not to mention the many hiking routes just waiting to be explored.

The festival includes tours of the kiwifruit orchards and pack houses, including the rare opportunity to see how the local grappa is

Aim and purposeThe primary aim of the Kruger to Canyons Birding Route is to provide local and international birders with up to date and detailed information to enable them to enjoy the amazing avifauna of the region. The route provides information on birding sites, birding events, local bird guides and the location of Birder Friendly Establishments through a variety of mediums such as a website, brochures, maps and an information office located in Phalaborwa. The route is however more than just an information provider to avitourists. One of the key objectives is to promote the conservation of birds and their habitats through the education of communities, tour operators and accommodation establishments within the route.

Responsible tourismAccommodation establishments have a direct link with visiting avitourists. Recognizing this the route has developed an environmental and social management framework plan for accommodation establishments and only accredits those establishments which implement the plan and prescribes to the principles of responsible tourism and fair trade. One of the requirements for accreditation is that these establishments educate their

guests on environmental and social issues as well as support local community projects through procurement and recruitment policies. Through our birder friendly accommodation establishments the route hopes to achieve far reaching positive environmental and social impacts throughout the region.

Local Community DevelopmentRecognising the important role that local communities play in conservation the route has become involved in a number of different community initiatives. An example of this is our guide training program which has trained eight members of local communities as THETA accredited bird guides. We are involved in the construction of a community lodge at Tswenyane which will act as hospitality training lodge for local community members. The lodge will be promoted as an avitourism destination but more importantly will be used to provide the local community with an incentive to protect the habitat and birds that occur in their area. The route is also assisting the setting up of community run indigenous nursery which will underpin a carbon offset project run through the Birder Friendly Establishments.

Education ProjectsEducation is a key for the long term

preservation of birds and their habitats. The route initiated the Little Egrets Club which takes local learners into the Kruger National Park on a bi-monthly basis. We hosted a bird feeder, colouring in and essay competition which saw over 1000 learners taking part and learning about the important role that birds play in the environment. We are also involved in assisting several eco-schools in Namakgale and Lulekani in the cleanup of their wetlands.

Infrastructure ProjectsThe route is involved with the construction of a number of different infrastructure projects from birds hides in Phalaborwa to the construction of a vulture restaurant at Tswenyane on the Drakensberg escarpment. The purpose of these projects is to enhance the birdwatching experience to visiting and local birders.

Conservation ProjectsIn addition to education projects the conservancy is also involved in raptor research in the area ranging from population surveys on specific species such as Pel’s Fishing Owl to tracking population trends of raptor species using raptor score sheets.

The majority of birders actively plan birding trips to areas where they can either see a large amount of birds in a short time or mega rarities that would not easily be seen elsewhere. The newly created Kruger to Canyons Birding Route offers both of these highlights to visiting birders. The route starts at the top of the Blyde River Canyon from where it meanders along the course of the Canyon before plunging down through the Abel Erasmus pass and into the Lowveld. The drop in altitude from 1730 to 250 masl gives rise to three very different terrestrial biomes namely montane grasslands, afro-montane forest and savanna within which various different vegetation types are nested. Contained in this area is the world famous Kruger National Park, 10 provincial nature reserves and the world’s largest collection of privately owned nature reserves. This diverse range of habitats provides home for a total of 76 bird families and a staggering 510 species of which 8 are endemic to the region. In addition, the fantastic road infrastructure, as well as well established tourism industry offering accommodation in unparalleled surroundings, provides birders with an excellent platform from which to explore the area.

When you are busy exploring the breathtaking Blyde River Canyon region, be sure to take in the sight of the Kadishi ‘Tafu’ Waterfall, one of the largest of its kind in the world. At 200 metres (600ft), the Kadishi waterfall is the second highest tafu waterfall on earth. A tafu waterfall is formed when water running over dolomite rock forms calcium, and deposits stone foundations more rapidly than it erodes the surrounding rock. In the Kadishi Tafu Waterfall, the formation that has been composed naturally resembles a face that is crying during the summer rainfall months, and is thus known as ‘The Weeping Waterfall.’

Rescued soon after birth, when she became separated from her mother during the massive floods that hit the area in 2000, Jessica the orphaned hippo has become a popular attraction in the Hoedspruit region of Limpopo. After hand-rearing and caring for the little hippo since birth, Jessica has become part and parcel of the Tonie and Shirley Joubert family. The friendly creature has ballooned in size since then, and is now over a ton in weight, so a few alterations had to be done around the farm to accommodate the new family member. For the past eleven years Jessica has continued to hog the limelight at the Joubert’s farm situated next to the Blyde River. Now she has her own website, and a Godmother that lives in America. 015 795 5249 / www.jessicahippo.com

PHALABORWATHE GREAT

KRUGER

OASIS of the North

Phalaborwa might be a mining town, but its lush greenery, palm and tropical fruit trees and bougainvilleas have established it as the oasis of the North. Phalaborwa borders the Kruger National Park (KNP) – and is perfectly located to give tourists a number of adventure opportunities. While the town’s mining activities form the economic base of the town, tourism has grown into a flourishing industry in the area. The town’s mining roots go back as far 400AD and numerous minerals, including copper and phosphates are mined here. With its natural beauty, proximity to the KNP and Mozambican border, booming mining industry and a wealth of tourist activities, the Sotho tribes were spot on in dubbing it Ba-Phalaborwa, which means “better than the south”.

What to see...

While many theories do the rounds, nobody can really explain the “Freak of Nature” tree at the Kruger Park Gateway Airport. Mother Nature’s quirky sense of humour is rooted in this unique “tree” that is a a Mopani and Marula tree in one. To add to its freakiness, the Marula tree bears fruit every January and February.

THE FREAK OF NATURE

Touch down at the Kruger Park Gateway Airport, outside Phalaborwa - just a hop, a skip and a jump from discovering the Kruger National Park. The airport has a 1 300 meter runway with two landing directions and SA Airlink operates daily scheduled flights from Johannesburg. The airport might not rival bigger airports in size, but generously makes up for it

in character. Designer Oliver Wills has transformed the airport into a tourist attraction of note with a unique African aesthetic that is one of a kind. Wills beautifully combined functionality with authentic African elements to create an airport that is one-of-a-kind gateway to a magnificent tourist destination.

MINING HISTORY

Situated in one of Phalaborwa’s first houses, the Foskor Mine Museum is a celebration of the area’s rich mining history. The museum offers an educational look at historical activities in the area, while retelling the story of the tribes that once thrived there. It was over 1 000 years ago that the Ba-Malatjie tribe, after discovering copper and iron, settled in the area they called Ba-Phalaborwa. They established a primitive smelting and metal-working industry, the remains of which are on display at the Foskor Museum. The museum is open to individuals and groups, but due to its popularity it’s advisable to give them a ring in advance.

If fate didn’t lead designer Tom Joubert to discover the unique Afrikania design, it would have been lost to modern cement building methods. Luckily fate complied and it led to the establishment of Afrikania in 1999. The pattern, unique to Phalaborwa, is an ancient design that occurred wherever Tsonga and Pedi people were living together. Today, Afrikania artists use their skill in decorating with the pattern to create exquisite items. Described as ‘A Symbol of Peace’ by Joubert, the pattern comes to life in a range of beautiful pots, flower vases, serving platters and much more.

In 2009 UNESCO officially recognised the Vhembe region as a biosphere, bringing the tally of South African biosphere reserves to six out of the 531 sites worldwide in 105 countries. The Vhembe Biosphere Reserve (VBR) comprises the northern part of the Kruger National Park, the Makuleke Wetlands Ramsar Site, the Soutpansberg and Blouberg bio-diversity hot spots, including the Mapungubwe World Heritage Site and the Makgabeng Plateau with its thousands

of rock art sites. The size of the VBR has been estimated at approximately 30 701 km2 and with an impressive diversity of endemic plant and insect species, perfectly matched up to UNESCO’s strict criteria. Apart from drawing tourists to the area, the declaration of Vhembe as a biosphere holds many advantages that will go a long way to ensure improved planning, development and conservation of the area.

the great NORTHWhether you decide to rough it or prefer a more luxurious safari experience, the northernmost parts of Kruger National Park (KNP) are a truly world-class African wildlife experience. Roughly 70% of the KNP lies in the Limpopo Province, which provides four access gates – Pafuri, Punda Maria, Phalaborwa and Orpen – which provide tourists with a unique KNP experience. The northern parts abound with wildlife and offer the best opportunity for close encounters with the ‘Big Five’, especially regular sightings of elephant. The KNP provides a number of lodges and rest camps that offer game drives, walking safaris, bird watching and wildlife photography. The northernmost parts are also home to some of the most exciting national heritage sites, including Thulamela in the Pafuri area and the Masorini heritage site close to the Phalaborwa gate. These sites preserve the remains of two groups of people who inhabited the area during the Iron Age. The KNP has also been incorporated into the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, which spans a vast area of over 35,000 km2 in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

A visit to the Vhembe region is a magical journey of discovery that uncovers a rich history that weaves through remarkable rock art left by the San to the ancient African kingdoms ensconced in their fortresses at Mapungubwe and Thulamela. The area’s history paints a picturesque scene of an area rich with myths and legends of old that are still very much alive today.

SPARKLE OF OPPORTUNITYThe Venetia Mine a shiny jewel in the Musina Municipality of Limpopo’s crown, being the largest producer of diamonds in South Africa. Situated 80 kilometres from Musina, Venetia is an open-pit mine - one of De Beers’ six remaining diamond mines in South Africa. The mine has been in operation for over 18 years and in the first quarter of 2010 produced nearly 970,000 carats of diamonds. The majority of the mine’s workforce hails from the Musina and Blouberg municipalities that benefit greatly from the mine’s efforts to uplift the local community through its corporate social investment. 015 575 2029

It was Rudyard Kipling who immortalized the mighty Limpopo River as “the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo River, all set about with fever trees” in the short story The Elephant’s Child. This majestic river stretches lazily across an estimated 1,770 kilometres, serving as border on

the southeast bank from Botswana in the northwest, Zimbabwe in the north and the Kruger National Park in the north-east. This mass of water is a popular destination for water activities that include white-water rafting and canoeing, fishing, boating and unforgettable river safaris.

The magnificent Soutpansberg Mountain derives its name from the salt pan located at its western end. To the indigenous Venda people it is Letshoyang, but generally means “place of salt” – where this mineral is still mined today. The range stretches majestically from east to west for around 130km

with towering peaks, like Hanglip and Lejuma that offer panoramic views more than 1,500 m above sea level. It also serves as a gateway to Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique and attractions such as the Mapungubwe National Park and Kruger National Park. This unique mountain range

is home to more than 460 bird and over 500 tree species, and hosts an abundance of mammal, reptile and amphibian species. The Soutpansberg forms part of the Vhembe Biosphere – further testimony to the inimitable splendour and uniqueness of the mountain.

Perched atop a plateau in the Soutpansberg, just north of Pafuri in the Kruger National Park, lies what is considered to be one of the most important archaeological finds in South Africa. Thulamela – or ‘place of birth’ – is a stone citadel that further excavations have revealed to be a mountain kingdom that flourished from 1 200 and 1 600 AD. The people of Thulamela were gifted goldsmiths and they chiefly traded gold and ivory for glass beads and corn. Today Thulamela is a popular open-air museum that is open to the public. 012 343 1991

In the memorial garden at the entrance to Lalapanzi Hotel, 30 kilometres from Louis Trichardt the memory of lesser known casualties of war is kept alive. The wild dog has for long been held in low regard by local farmers. These “painted wolves” are seen as a threat to economic activities like safari hunting and live game sales. The Venetia Limpopo Wild Dog Project has for the past eight years gone to great lengths to uncover the potential of these fascinating animals by establishing the species as an ecotourism asset. The project has

opened the door for research trips and den-site visits that are proving very popular among tourists and wildlife enthusiasts. The project offers exclusive Wild Dog Eco Tours that provides guests with the opportunity to radio-track wild dogs with the project researchers. THE PAPER TRAIL In the early 1990s, well before the green revolution, a small factory on the outskirts of Louis Trichard combined recycling and the spoils of nature to produce beautifully handcrafted paper. The factory mixes recycled paper pulp and the dung of rhino and elephant to produce elegant writing paper, journals, cards and notebooks with a distinctive twist. Their material is sourced from a unique pool of local businesses that provide the waste paper and of course their ‘wild’ suppliers that occur in abundant in the area. 015 593 0076

EUGENE MARAIS

Waterberg’s famous son

The Waterberg Biosphere became the first northern region in South Africa to be named as a ‘Biosphere Reserve’ by UNESCO in 2001and is also the first and only savannah biosphere reserve in the country. Straddling an area of 15 000km², the Waterberg has a natural beauty which is unmatched elsewhere – from its soaring craggy heights in the southern escarpment where the ‘Seven Sisters’ guard the plains, to the north-eastern buttress of majestic rock formations, rising sheer out of the bushveld lowlands. As the name suggests, the Waterberg was named by the early trekkers for its bounteous supply of clear,

fresh water. The Waterberg also gives one a sense of unlimited space; the central plateau provides an extraordinary feeling of emptiness, despite the fact that early man has lived here for thousands of years, as evidenced by the abundance of rock art and ancient archaeological sites. The Waterberg is renowned for many things, including its spectacular vertical rock faces that soar as high as 500 metres above the surrounding plains. Cut by equally spectacular gorges, they form massive bulwarks and the ramparts of the Waterberg Massif. Particularly striking are the cliffs and buttresses around

Hangklip and along the Mokolo, Sterk and Mogalakwena rivers in the west, south-west and north-east of the Waterberg.During the past decade there have been big changes in land use practises, which have seen the switch from conventional farming to the introduction of wildlife and the adoption of sound conservation principles. Today the Waterberg region is one of the country’s top tourism destinations, boasting many private and provincial game reserves featuring the big five, many other antelope species and prolific birdlife.

According to ancient legend, Egyptians believed mushrooms to be the plant of immorality. The delicate flavour of mushrooms intrigued the pharaohs so much that they decreed mushrooms to be food for royalty only, and that no commoner could ever touch them.Limpopo is home to Chanmar Mushroom Farm, tucked away in the magnificent Waterberg area. Started in 2003, the farm produces the tasty

white button mushroom as well as the larger brown mushroom. Chanmar also produce a zesty preserved mushroom delicacy that can be served as a snack or combined with a salad. This popular pickled version is available in three flavours – spicy masala, mustard & garlic and sweet and sour. Chanmar products are available at all leading supermarkets and retail food outlets in Limpopo. 015 453 0659

The name Eugène Marais, famous Afrikaans naturalist, author and poet is synonymous with the Waterberg. His scientific work, his poetry, and by all accounts his heart, were all intricately linked to the region. It was the writings of this complex, fascinating and tortured man that first brought the Waterberg to public attention. To this day, Marais’ writings on the Waterberg are amongst the most beautiful and moving in South African literature.Marais was also a pioneer in the field of ethology,

spending many years studying the behaviour of a troop of baboons and the social behaviour of termites on the farm Rietfontein in the Waterberg. These observations were published in his books The Soul of the Ape, My Friends the Baboons and the Soul of the White Ant.One of the Waterberg’s little-known secrets, except to a few real experts, is the existence of an outcrop of cycads (Encephalartos eugènemaraisii) at Entabeni that was named after Marais and can be visited to this day.

No story about the Waterberg region will be complete without the tale of the ancient caves of Makapansgat. The first Voortrekkers arrived in the early 1850’s and settled on the flats to the east of the Waterberg, living rather uneasily with several local tribes in the area. In 1854, things came to a head after Chief Makapane of the BaTlou gathered thousands of warriors to oust these newcomers. In September 1854 Makapane’s warriors killed 25 Trekkers including a group of 12 – men, women and children at a drift on the Mokgalakwena River. This became known as Moorddrif, murder crossing, just south of Mokopane. The Trekkers put together a commando to avenge these murders and Makapane and his

warriors took refuge in the large caves nearby and the commando laid siege. After about a month the commandos investigated and found that Chief Makapane and 1 500 of his warriors had died in the cave from wounds, hunger and dehydration. Apart from this dreadful episode, Makapansgat has gained world recognition after fossil evidence revealed the existence of the early ancestors of modern humankind going back more than three million years. Since then the whole of the Makapan’s Valley has been declared a National Heritage Site. Helped by funding from the European Union, a visitor’s centre has been opened that offers interesting tours of the area.

The area around Mokopane (formerly Potgietersrus) is steeped in ancient history and tradition. Turn back the pages of time and visit the Arend Dieperink Museum for a cultural and historical fix of the region. Mokopane was first inhabited by the BaTlou tribe before a group of Voortrekkers founded the town in 1858 and named

it Potgietersrus, after Commandant-General Piet Potgieter. Originally built as a school, the museum features ancient fossils, Voortrekker and Bapedi artefacts, relics from the Boer War and a typical Bosveldhuis. Visitors can also taste old delicacies like fresh farm bread, biltong and mampoer.

If you have a special interest for historic buildings, add a visit to the Church of St John the Baptist to your itinerary when in the Waterberg. The church was designed by Sir Herbert Baker, the same architect that designed the Union Buildings in Pretoria. Built entirely from local materials, the church was officially opened in 1914. Today, this beautiful

thatched chapel still stands with free-standing church bell and all, and is regularly used for intimate weddings. How to get there - roughly 11 kilometres from Vaalwater, on the Melkrivier road, the Vier-en-Twintig Riviere turn-off has a makeshift sign that reads ‘St Johns Church, all welcome, 8.6 km’.

At Emerging Publications, we focus on target marketing. That means that your ad will be distributed to the right people at the right place at the right time.

We’ll provide you with a long-term marketing strategy.

We publish high quality magazines that enjoy lasting readability. A lot of thought goes into the content of each and every magazine to ensure that it is credible and enjoyable.

Your ad will not only appear in printed media, it will also feature on our website. (If you would like to advertise on our website only, we’ll gladly accommodate you.)

We keep track of emerging local and tourist markets to ensure that the content of our magazines stay relevant.
