INSTRUCTIONS TO ASSESSORS

To prepare for assessment of this unit of competency, assessors should refer to the RII Assessment Materials Overview Guide. This guide includes directions on how to conduct an assessment for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Prepare for the practical assessment • Ensure date, time, place, employee, assessment instrument and any tools/equipment are arranged.

• Ensure the environment is adequate for verbal delivery of assessment.

• Explain what is required of employee. Both employee and assessor must confirm employee’s readiness for assessment.

• Gather relevant site standards and procedures from the appropriate authorised company personnel.

Work Health and Safety • Ensure all personnel have completed an area-specific induction prior to assessment commencing.

• Site, area and statutory safety requirements must be observed at all times during the assessment.

• All Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to the task being assessed and to the area the assessment is being carried out in, is to be worn at all times.

Customising the assessmentThe assessment should be customised to reflect site-specific:

• risks and hazards

• equipment and machinery

• processes and procedures, including reporting and recording procedures

• standards and requirements

Carrying out the assessment • Do not interrupt while employee is performing a task.

• Where appropriate “What if …” questions shall be asked to assess knowledge relating to emergency and/or operating situations.

• Where the employee is working dangerously or without necessary care or confidence, the assessor must direct the employee to cease work and terminate the assessment. Immediate feedback should be given.

• To gain overall competency in the unit, all assessment criteria must be met. All questions must be answered correctly unless otherwise stated in the assessment instrument or elsewhere in site policy.

Completing the assessment • All sections of the assessment must be completed with an ink pen.

• Pre–assessment: To ensure that the employee understands the assessment process the assessor must explain the assessment and any appeal processes to the employee. Both are to sign the Pre-assessment form prior to commencing the assessment.

• Performance will often need to be demonstrated over a period of time and/or in different locations. More than one assessment of a block of tasks may be necessary. The relevant part of a blank assessment tool can be copied for re-use, then dated and attached to the original once it is completed.

• Where appropriate, performance should be assessed across different Range Statement conditions eg wet and dry weather; day and night; different equipment attachments; different materials, etc.

• The assessment tool is structured to allow for suitable breaks where needed between blocks of tasks.

• Outcomes from theory and other supporting evidence assessments should be reflected in the final assessment summary.

• On final completion of the overall assessment the “Final Assessment Summary” sheet must be completed by both the employee and assessor, and signed by the authorising Supervisor/Manager according to site policy.

• Communicate to employee any feedback comments.

• If the NYC (Not Yet Competent) box is ticked, the assessor must inform the employee’s supervisor and further training needs to be given to bring the employee up to a competent level. Note: Refer to Training Manual for any clarification.

• Prior to commencement, advise employee of right to appeal under Company Fair Treatment policy (or equivalent).

Assessor QualificationsAssessors must have the following:

• Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, or equivalent

• industry competence equal to, or in excess of, this unit of competency

• relevant industry experience, or work with individuals with relevant industry experience

Expiry status of assessmentRequirements for maintenance of competence (eg re-assessment) are determined by site policy.

Resources requiredA list of available resources that will be used to assess the competence of participants should be provided to an appendix to this document.

Range of variables • To be assessed on the above equipment on Company site.

• To communicate using Company methods in place.

• To conduct maintenance tasks as authorised by Company.
