The Komodo Dragon

Introduction
Name : Komodo dragon or Varanus Komodoensis.
History : * Discovered in 1910 by a WWI plane’s pilot after the crash into the sea of komodo.
* 1926 scientific expedition(Mr. W. Douglas Burden).
• Locations : - Komodo Island(3000) - Rinca Island(900) – Motong Island(150).

Characteristics
Class : Reptiles. Category : Lizards. Weight : 70 /160 kgs. (Biggest lizard in the world !!)
Length : 2-3 m. Speed : 20 km/h. Lifetime : 50 y. Nourishment : Carrion + Various prey ( rodents,birds or
mammals). + Adult K.D may devour the babies . Reproduction : * Mating occurs between May and June. * Female lays 15 to 30 eggs in September. * The incubation lasts 8/9 months. Habitat : Very dry and warm environment with little water
availability.

Cold blood killer !
A vicious hunter :* The K.D always choose the weakest prey.* They chase their prey until they manage to place a single bite.* The poison does the rest.* The prey runs away and hides but looses its blood very fast.* The K.D use their sophisticated olfactory system to find the prey
dead.

Poisonous !!
The K.D keep their venom in their lower jaws. The venom is contained in their salliva. The venom contains 50 different kind of bacterias. These bacterias make the blood thinner,and cause blood
vessels to become larger. The bite causes a shock to the victim, due to its huge loss of
blood which leads to the dysfunction of its organs Shut down !
• 2 venom glands.• 6 compartments.• 1.2 ml of venom.

Young dragons represent 10% of the K.D diet .

The only deadly attack reported 2007 a K.D killed a 8 y.o boy.
