Bruce Go rdon urges se niors to reme mb er their roots By Lois Firestone ('50) Change is inevitable, progress is optional and commitment is necessary Alumnus of the Year Bruce Gordon ('52) told students and alumni gathered for the annual scholarship awards pro- gram June 2 at Salem High School. The dinner portion of the event, hosted by the Salem Alumni Association, was cancelled by the Board of Education because a third case of meningitis occurred in the area. People attending received the antibiotic which was handed out throughout the evening at Southeast School. "Never forget your values ," Gordon told the graduating seniors. "Your small town roots will do you well. Community service and volunteerism is what has made Salem a great city." Quoting Calvin Coolidge's words that character comes from roots, he said that "roots are more important th an leaves." He said that his wish for the graduating seniors is "that you don't forget where you came from." «_ Members of the Class of 1951 who were honored as 50-year gradu- ates, donated $10,900 to the Alumni Association. The Class of 1941 gave $3,062.50 to the association. A total of $167, 125 was given to 49 students in the 2001 graduating class by the Alumni Association. Among the awards presented by the Alumni Association was the J. Robert Sebo Bowling Green University Scholarship. Alumni scholarship award winners are Abigail Zimmerman, $6,500; Jeffrey Kelly, $4,875; Danelle Hupp, Stephen Keen, $6,000; Stephanie Altenhof, Alexa Bostwick, Elisabeth Spack, $5,500; Damien Earl, $3,750; Jennifer Lederle, Justin Palmer, $5,000; Katie Baillie, Christina Hood, Laura Jeckavitch, Christina Naylor, Zachary Stevenson, $4,500; Charles Cleland, Joseph Dombroski, Sara Hoppes, Russell Howells, Amber Thorne, $4,000; Geoffrey Korff, $1,750; Juanita Trimm, $3,500; Stacy 'fanek, $3,250; Christopher Bartholow, Brian Cushman, Rebecca Davis, Sarah Gay, Keith Jackson, Jessica Jewell, Lisa Lucas, Rachael Mathes, Paul McKee, Jayma Wells, Adam Zagotti, $3,000.
