November 2019
From the Pastor: 6Do not worry about anything, but in every-
thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving
let your requests be made known to God. 7And the
peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ
Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)
Prayer Pet Peeves – Episode 1:
White Knuckling the Rosary
Or
Why pray when things haven’t gone
wrong?
It is my belief that for many Christians
the activity of prayer is most often connected
with and applied primarily during times of
great distress – grieving a loss, anxiously wait-
ing for a test result, begging for escape from a bad situation, etc...
While times of distress are indeed a
great opportunity to pray, it should most cer-
tainly not be the only time when we practice
the discipline of prayer. After all, prayer is a
gift to us from God.
Think about it. God; the Creator of the
Universe, the Prime Essence of all Existence,
the Divine Master of the Cosmos, GOD
promises to listen to our prayers, to receive
our petitions, and to hear us when we cry out.
That is simply incredible, and a proof of God’s
awesome love and grace (continued on p. 4)

Church Family,
We would like to take a moment and thank you for all your
help making Thursday, October 17, 2019 a true day of re-

those of you who ensured the luncheon was set-up and pre-
pared for a time of fellowship. We want to also say a special
thank you to Claire Sniegoski, who made sure the church
was decorated with quilts in memory of Cindy. We are
thankful that God placed you into our lives for support dur-

Blessings,
Carl and family

for us all. And yes, besides being a gift, prayer is also a privi-
lege. It is an opportunity to speak the things on our minds
and in our hearts; our fears, joys, wishes, and desires; to
offer them before the cross of Christ and God’s Holy
Throne, and know that they are carried on the wings of the
Holy Spirit with sighs too deep for words.
Yet even with all this, the truth is that many Chris-
tians tend to neglect their prayer lives; only engaging in
prayer when things have finally gotten to the point of being
completely out of control. This is unfortunate because it
causes us to miss out on the many other opportune times
for prayer which often help us to grow and mature in our
faith and our relationship with God.
In the hopes of offering some other options, here are just a
few ways that you can get into a positive prayer lifestyle:
Pray in the morning as you just wake up and in the even-
ing before you go to sleep. It’s a great way to pre-
pare for the day ahead of you and to find some
peace to help you rest easier at night.
Pray at your mealtimes (even snacks if you like). This is
another way to guarantee a regular habit of prayer
as we all need to eat to live; and praying over meals
offers an opportunity to give thanks for God’s provi-
sion of your daily needs.
Pray in those moments when things mysteriously go
your way. After all, those things we consider to be
coincidences, good luck, or serendipity – these are
all just ways that God works anonymously to add joy
to your life.
Remember – prayer is the language of faith, and it is a gift
from God that gets easier, more intense, and more mean-
ingful as we use it with greater frequency in both good
times and bad.

MINISTRIES AVAILABLE TO OUR SENIORS, SHUT-INS,
SICK, ETC.:
CD Ministry—CD’s of the weekly services are being mailed
out to all those senior, sick or and shut-in members who cannot
attend church services.
Large Print Devotionals—these are the same as our small, dai-
ly devotionals but have larger print for those needing it.
Prayer Shawls—These are available for sick, hospitalized, shut
-in or senior members who would like one. They are very com-
forting to those who have received them. Recipients do not
need to be a member of Robeson so please take them for others
who would like them.
Robeson Hammers—Helping members in need with minor
repairs at home, mainly small projects that would make their
homes safer or more comfortable.
Home Visits—Our visitation team now trained to bring Holy
Communion is visiting a number of our seniors and shut-ins and
would be more than happy to visit others if invited. It is our
hope to visit with and bring Holy Communion to each shut-in
and homebound member of Robeson up to 6 times a year. If
you would like a visit, and have not yet been visited by a mem-
ber of our team, please feel free to contact Pastor Michael or
call the church office 610-856-7242.)
If you have a need or request for any of the above ministries,
please call the church office and we will be happy to help you.
The Berks County Area Agency on Aging is available to help
you over the phone. Please call their office at 610-478-6500
and a staff member will be able to explain available services,
answer questions and provide information on programs and
community resources for you, family members or anyone you
know who is 60 years of age and older. Please don’t hesitate to
give them a call.

Celebrating 250 Years!
“Keep the Light Shining”
Capital Campaign & Anniversary Celebration
Half-way Mark
On Reformation Sunday, and in anticipation of the
250th anniversary of Robeson Evangelical Lutheran Church
in 2020, we begin the second half of the two year journey of
our “Keep the Light Shining” Endowment Anniversary Cam-
paign.
It is with great gratitude that we celebrate all that has
been given in support of this campaign in the first year. Be-
cause of you we are able to strengthen the congregational
endowment that supports the future needs of our church.
Each generous and loving gift will sustain the wonderful
ministry that this congregation does in the local community,
and indeed to the world.
It is not too late to become a part of the campaign! In
fact, you can join in and support this campaign at any time
within the next year. All gifts are important and will be
greatly appreciated and received with thanksgiving to the
glory of God.
Lastly, a reminder - those wishing to support the
campaign should mark checks or offering envelopes with the
word “Pledge” or, if using our online e-giving service, make
gifts out to the “endowment” category.
Thank you for your generous and prayerful support!

250th Anniversary Book
Being Planned
Happy 249th Birthday to Robeson Lutheran
Church! That is a great milestone, and it al-
so means that in 2020, we will celebrate our
church's 250th Anniversary of being the
“Light on the Hill". The Anniversary Committee is already
starting to plan anniversary activities and events. Along with
the “Keep the Light Shining" Campaign and the Robeson
Picture Fundraiser, the committee is interviewing some of
our older members and encouraging them to share their
memories of Robeson Church, and also accumulating photos
and information to be included in the history being written.
In order to have a way to share the history, photos, and other
wonderful memories, we will be printing a full-color anni-
versary book which will be available free of charge to all our
members next fall when we formally celebrate the 250th An-
niversary.
Beginning in January, 2020, we will be sending out letters to
our members regarding the anniversary book and offering an
opportunity for everyone to be a part of the book by purchas-
ing a block in the book to use as your personal message and/
or as a memorial to family members. You may also include
photos in your block and, all photos used, will be returned to
you. In the letter regarding the anniversary book, we will
include samples of the various sizes of blocks available and
ideas of wording you may wish to use. In the new foyer, we
will also be displaying samples of similar books done for
other churches which will give you an idea of how our book
will look.
Even though you will not be contacted regarding the anniver-
sary book for a few months, we wanted to make you aware
of it so you may begin choosing photos you already have or
maybe start taking special family photos for your block in
the book. We will also be contacting local businesses for ads

THIS AND THAT AT ROBESON LUTHERAN:
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!! We have posted
volunteer sheets on the bulletin board in the new
foyer. If you are willing to help during any of the
worship services please sign up on this board. There are lists
for acolytes, lectors, ushers, greeters, sound technicians, wor-
ship assistants, and communion servers. We appreciate and
need our volunteers!
ALTAR GUILD: We thank everyone who has offered to
help with Altar Guild since Marion’s retirement. We could
still use a few more volunteers; if you are willing to serve on
altar care for a month with at least one other volunteer please
call the church office (610.856.7242).
REMINDERS:
Committee reports are due in the church office on the first
Thursday of the month for the council meeting which will be
held on the 2nd Thursday.
All Property concerns and requests should be brought to the
attention of the church office.
PARISH DIGEST DEADLINE: Articles for the Advent Let-
ter are due by November 15; for the December/January
newsletter are due in the office by no later than December 2.
BULLETINS & ALTAR FLOWERS:
Sponsors are needed every Sunday to
defray the costs of the Altar flowers and
bulletins. We thank those members who
answered the plea for sponsors by gener-
ously offering to sponsor the altar flow-
ers and bulletins where needed for the rest of the year! If you
would like to sponsor the altar flowers or bulletins for a spe-
cial occasion or in memory of a loved one, please call Linell
at the church office to check for availability. Cost Increase:
The cost for bulletins on a regular Sunday is now $30,
and the cost of altar flowers is $45.

LEAVING A LEGACY THAT GOES BEYOND DEATH When we recall the names of the faithful who have died, our
minds are often filled with precious memories. In our
thoughts we are reminded that we are their legacy, that is to
say, much of what we have – in both material and non-
material things – has been handed down to us from them.
But what will we hand down to those who follow? How will
we be remembered by those who come after us? Will we
leave more than an empty spot in a pew?
As you plan for the distribution of your assets at your
death, please consider a charitable bequest to Robeson Lu-
theran Church. This is one way your faith can be transferred
to the next generation. This, and other types of planned gifts,
can undergird our congregation’s ministry in perpetuity,
providing resources that will allow future generations of
Christians to worship, serve others, and continue the vital
ministries of this church.
If you have questions about planned giving, you can talk to
your personal financial advisor or speak to our congregation-
al Thrivent representative John Lauer at his Morgantown of-
fice (610)-286-5986.
THRIVENT CHOICE DOLLARS: Our thanks to those
members/friends of the congregation who have designated
Robeson Lutheran Church as the charity of choice for their
Thrivent Choice Dollars. If you have received a letter from
Thrivent indicating that you are eligible for this plan, please
consider our congregation as you help direct Thrivent
Financial’s charitable funds. This month we have received
$25. Thank you to Evelyn Hoffert.

in the book as well as inviting area churches to purchase
blocks in the book as their way of congratulating Robeson
Church on our 250th Anniversary. Our church will receive
50% of all the ads and blocks sold in the book, giving us the
opportunity to raise additional funds for the church’s
anniversary. The main reason for the anniversary book is to
have a way of providing a treasured memento for our mem-
bers that they will be proud to share over and over again with
family members and friends.
Please check your mail in January for more information and,
if you have questions regarding the anniversary book, please
contact Lucille Freeman at 610-856-7349 or by email to

Robeson Picture Fundraiser
We are excited to announce a fundraiser that we think every-
one will love! We are teaming up with Jen Werner and Thru
Jen’s Lens to give you the chance to bring a piece of Robe-
son home with you. Jen has taken pictures from around the
church property of things that look like letters and she’s
framed them to spell words. You will have the opportunity to
see her work after services on October 27th and November
17th. She will also be at our bazaar this year on November
2nd. You can even create your own custom piece using any
of the letters in her catalog.
To view examples of Jen's work go to her website
www.tjlpix.com and also her Facebook page which is acces-
sible from the site. You may choose either a wood block
called a “Door Topper” suitable for a desk, window sill,
bookcase, or molding above windows or doors for $20 up to
9 letters and $25 over 9 letters, or a framed picture for a wall
hanging which range from $35 to $85 (3-8 letters available).
All pictures will be ready for Christmas so buy your gifts
here! Checks can be made out to Robeson Lutheran Church
with “picture fundraiser” in the memo line. Please return or-
der forms to the church office by Nov 17th to get orders by
Christmas. Payment should accompany order. All proceeds
will go to our “Keep the Light Shining 250th anniversary
endowment campaign”.

THRIVENT POP TAB CHALLENGE:
Pulling Together for Ronald McDonald House Charities
You see them everywhere you open up a soft drink or soup,
sometimes find them when you feed your pet. Those tiny little
tabs are easy to overlook, but they can make a big impact on
the families at Ronald McDonald House. Join us as we support
the Thrivent Member Network’s Pop Tab Collection Chal-
lenge!
Start collecting today and drop them in the collection boxes in
the new foyer and narthex at the church.
THE LITTLE LIBRARY celebrated its first
year anniversary in August! It is located next to
the church and parsonage, and continues to
provide books for young and old. We thank
everyone who has been sharing their books and
Bonnie Lauer who continues to take care of the
library. Have you read some good books over the
summer? If so, please consider donating them to
the library so others can enjoy them as well. Feel
free to include a little note with it if you’d like. There are
books for young and old, so please come check them out!
YOUTH GROUP FUNDRAISERS:
Please stop by the church office and purchase your Giant gift
cards (we are well stocked) and Weavers coupons (now $6.00
each). The youth group appreciates your support. Proceeds
will go toward their participation in the next National Youth
Gathering in Minneapolis in 2021.
Do we have your EMAIL ADDRESS? If not, please send it
to [email protected] with your name in the subject. We
are hoping to have as many emails as possible in order to noti-
fy our members of any cancelations, send out reminders, and
alert you of changes. Your help will be appreciated!

offer alternative therapy services such as aromatherapy, yo-
ga, massage, reiki, art for self- discovery, meditation and na-
ture. (We are extending the time so that you have ample

In December, instead of bringing a dessert to share since we

ing for donations for our Joy boxes for our sick and home-
bound community members.

There will be age appropriate activities for children, includ-
ing making goodies that will be included in the Joy boxes.

to pick how you want to support this
ministry for the Christmas season. We
will be collecting presents, gift cards
and stockings for families in need in the
TV school district. The tree will be decorated with tags with
gift ideas for the children that you can select to provide
wrapped gifts. There will be stockings available on a nearby
table with a suggested list of stocking stuffers. You may also
donate money gift cards in any amount for the families to
purchase meal supplies or gifts.
PLEASE FILL OUT THE INFORMATION SHEET ON
THE TABLE TO RECORD YOUR NAME AND THE RE-
QUIRED DETAILS.
Please return all gifts by DECEMBER 8 so that they can be
delivered before the Holiday break. Your support of this
project will allow these children and their families to have a
special Christmas Whatever you can do to help is deeply
appreciated! A Thrivent Action Team will support this pro-
ject! Live Generously!!
We are also looking for a few volunteers after services to
assist people in getting tags and filling out the forms. Please
contact Bonnie Lauer if you are able to help with this.

CARD PARTY WITH LUNCH!
ALSO on November 10th following
the late service at noon the SJM is
hosting a lunch followed by a card par-
ty!! We will make cards and have
printed cards to send a note of holiday
hope and joy to immigrants and refu-
gees, prisoners and hospitalized military veterans.
This is a simple but wonderful way to share the gift of God’s
love for all who are experiencing a time of difficulty, fear
and discouragement just as Mary and Joseph did. A great
project for ALL AGES!! Cards will be collected at this
event so they can be sent to the appropriate agency in time.
If you cannot make the event, you can prepare your own at
home and drop it off at the church office or the SJM mail
slot.
A Thrivent Action Team will support the supplies and food
for this event!
