How to Draw UGLYDOLL:

Ugly Drawings in a Few Easy Steps

Here’s the ISBN number!

Let’s get started…

You should have all received a packet of supplies. Open up your packet and inspect the contents.

You should have the following materials:

1 piece of Smart Fab 1 puffy paint pen 2 ribbons 4 buttons 1 baggie of Poly-Fil 1 marker

1 needle 1 “spool” of thread Lesson Plan Ugly Size Chart Stitches Handout Power Point Packet

Has anyone seen a rubber

duck?

Not all “Uglys” are the same size. You can decide if you’re making a tall or short critter.

Step 1 • Draw the shape of

your critter, doll, or creature the size you’d like it to be. (The bigger you draw it, the easier it will be to sew. If you want a challenge, make it smaller.)

• Make sure you leave space for 2 fingers to fit within any

appendages.

Step 2 • Fold your Smart Fab

in half and place your drawing between the layers.

• Use a marker to trace your drawing onto the top layer of Smart Fab.

Step 3 • Choose an obscure

place and draw 2 marks with the Sharpie a distance of 3 finger widths away from each other.

• Draw a zig-zag between these 2 marks.

These marks will act as the start and finish lines for your stitching. They create the opening that allows you to add stuffing.

Step 4 • Thread your needle

• Begin stitching ¼” stitches from one of the 2 marks you made earlier.

• Using a RUNNING stitch, follow your outline and stop when you reach the other mark.

A RUNNING stitch follows a straight path, but weaves up and down through the layers of fabric.

Step 5 • When you’ve

reached your “stop” mark, knot the thread.

• Trim away the excess thread.

Step 6 • Trim off the excess

Smart Fab.

• Be sure to leave a healthy border (about a pencil width) between the stitching and where you cut.

Step 7 • Invert your

critter…make the seam side be the inside.

• Be sure to poke out all appendages.

Step 8

Add the Stuffing!

Don’t forget to poke stuffing into any appendages

first.

Step 9 When you’ve filled your critter to your desired fullness, make sure the excess seam allowance is folded into your critter and then stitch up the hole using a WHIP STITCH.

To make a WHIP STITCH , poke your needle down through the layers of fabric and then “whip it” around the side, bringing your needle back up to the top. Repeat until the hole is closed.

Step 10 • Use the items in your

supply packet (puffy paint, buttons, ribbons, etc.) to “dress up” and personalize your critter.

• Feel free to swap materials with those around you, if they have something you like better.
