Overview of programmes offered by the different Schools School of Built Environment

1. Supply Chain Management: 30 ECTS, Fall semester Why choose Supply Chain Management? Are you interested in logistical processes within organisations? Do you want to study in an international environment in a modern business city with the largest port of Europe, Rotterdam? Then Supply Chain Management might be the programme for you!

Most companies have good ideas about how to organize their primary logistics. Each company, however, is part of a network of supply chains that may need a different approach. In these networks all kinds of individual goals are pursued which may lead to sub-optimized products and services. Supply chain management considers all the stakeholders’ goals and in particular those of the final customer. In this minor, supply, production and distribution processes are analysed with a variety of methods and tools and are assessed on predetermined criteria which meet the needs of the stakeholders of the supply chain.

Rotterdam plays a vital role in many supply chains. The port itself needs to be able to process the enormous volume in bulk and TEUs as efficiently as possible. The correct choice of strategy and the correct configuration and control of processes is of high importance. The minor SCM closely cooperates with the research centre Sustainable Solutions RDM.

The programme Theoretical programme (15 ECTS): - Business Process Management and Certified Supply Chain Professional are based

on the curriculum developed by the APICS organization. - Methods and Tools is based on the Lean Six Sigma theories and the SCOR model

developed by the Supply Chain Council. - Efficient Consumer Response and Service Management - Logistics and Management is a module based on the strategies described and

developed by Martin Christopher, Professor at Cranfield University. Practical programme (15 ECTS): - SCM in retail: development of a commercial and logistics supply chain for a retail

company.

10

- CMI Six Sigma is a project based on a distribution case study, in which the lean techniques and Six Sigma project methodology have to be used.

- SCOR: research a supply chain in an existing company in a distribution, construction, or healthcare environment. Projects are done in close cooperation with research centres.

- Contemporary issues: A wide variety of external activities need to be done and guest lectures need to be organized and attended (per team of students).

Contemporary, Innovative and International The field of supply chain management is constantly changing. Therefore students are challenged to actively participate in external activities organized by branch organizations such as Dinalog, VLM/JLN, EVO and others. Internationally the minor has connections with APICS and the Supply Chain Council. A membership of JLN (fee approx. €25) and SCC (no charge) is required for the minor.

The students take part in contemporary research studies initiated by the minor itself or the research centre Logistics. By using the SCOR method — currently version 10 — part of a company’s supply chain is described, analysed and assessed. After research, in which innovative tools are applied from the Lean Six Sigma toolbox and the most

Page 11: Brochure Science without Borders 2013-2014

11

recent SCOR developments, advice and recommendations are presented to a board of professionals.

Exceed expectations! Studying the minor supply chain management means you need the practical, innovative and hands-on mentality associated with the city of Rotterdam. After completion of the minor you will be able to use tools of Lean Six Sigma and SCOR to analyse supply chain processes. You will be able to develop logistics concepts and you will have obtained excellent project management skills. You will understand the different objectives of the supply chain partners and the changes needed for supply chain optimisation. We strive for all our students to be competent in the professional field of supply chain management and, like the slogan of Rotterdam University says, ‘to exceed expectations’, both during their studies and in their professional life.

Extra qualifications: After completion of the minor you are well-prepared for passing the CPIM certification programme of APICS. The certificate is internationally recognized in logistics.

After completion of the minor you should be able to pass for the Six Sigma Green belt certification based on the lean tools and techniques used in the six sigma project in the minor.

For more information about this programme please contact Hanny van Hoeve, international coordinator of the programme of Logistics and Economics, offering the minor Supply Chain Management. [email protected]

2. Maritime Transport and Management: 30 ECTS, Fall and Spring semester Rotterdam Mainport University (RMU) is the result of a joint venture between the STC Group and the Rotterdam University of applied sciences. RMU offers bachelor degrees in Mainport related topics such as Transport and Logistics, Ship building and Chemical Process Engineering. Using the hands-on experience from professional practice is essential in all programmes and it enables us to adequately respond to the needs arising in professional practice in the biggest port in Europe.

Students are prepared for a profession in a global economy and on an internationally oriented labour market. In addition to international courses and projects, several international activities are organized, varying from study visits, excursions and practical training abroad to exchange programmes for students and teaching staff. One of these programmes is the Student Exchange Programme in Logistics and Transport Management.

The RMU building At this unique location in Europe, near the Port of Rotterdam, we provide the Bachelor’s degree programme Logistics and Transport Management. The Port of Rotterdam is Europe’s largest logistics and industrial hub, a gateway to the European market consisting of 450 million consumers. The port of Rotterdam is situated directly on the North Sea. The European market is accessible from Rotterdam via five competing transport modes: road, rail, inland shipping, coastal shipping and pipeline. One of the

Page 13: Brochure Science without Borders 2013-2014

13

main advantages of Rotterdam is its location on the estuary of the rivers Rhine and Maas. As a result, efficient and economical transport by inland shipping is possible deep into the heart of Europe. Investments in new and better infrastructure is taking place continuously. The development of the second Maasvlakte is an example of this. By reclaiming land from the sea the port of Rotterdam will be able to increase and therefore be prepared for the future.

The Student Exchange Programme Logistics is very international in scope and requires skilled communicators in the English language. Therefore the international programme is fully provided in English and compulsory for all students Logistics and Transport Management. This part is also an exchange programme, accessible to third and fourth year students from our partner universities, who will join the Dutch and other international students. The programme covers one semester (two quarters). You can decide if you want to start in September or in February.

School of Business and Management Studies 3. Technology and Management: 30 ECTS, Spring semester Technology and innovation management nowadays is regarded as a critical area of study in most business schools. This growing importance is partly a strategic response to managing knowledge-driven industry development. In a changing business climate, traditional management needs to combine with pragmatic technology management education that provides rich ground for developing managerial theories that are less “fuzzy” and practically more relevant to industry needs. Management studies are not just about theoretical constructs, but must, instead, address practical resolutions and problem solving in the real business world. Effective management needs an approach that combines general management theories with technology management practice to link business and technology. Course plan Technology and Management will provide you with a complete range of topics that contribute to this field of expertise, situated in an international environment as the harbour of Rotterdam is. With the harbour next door, we will show you around many production facilities, learn you how to understand their business models and the dynamics of Dutch international trade, and place that in a theoretical structure of technology management and entrepreneurship. In our business simulation, in which students run a production facility, you will effectively experience how production, R&D, logistics, finance, marketing and law are not just separate entities with their own purposes – although sometimes they act like they are – but in fact depending on each other, intertwined, add up to what we call an organisation. Please find your complete course plan in the table below. In addition to the main topics above mentioned, we will introduce you to the Netherlands with a comprehensive cultural programme, together with your fellow Dutch students. What students do we seek? This course has been specially developed for science students that like to develop themselves in business administration of the manufacturing industry, but is as well of great interest for students in economics or business that feel comfortable in state-of-the-art, technological production environments. We operate just in the centre of both worlds. You wil be studying together with Dutch students in Business Engineering and other international students.

Page 16: Brochure Science without Borders 2013-2014

Please note that Technology and Management will consume quite some time of your stay in the Netherlands. So if you like to invest in yourself, your development, your future; if you are up to a challenge, if you are enthousiastic and willing to learn, we will be most grateful to receiving you here and will return to you a great deal of knowledge and experience that is ready-to-use after you have successfully finished it. For more information about this programme, please contact Mr. Harald Koning, [email protected], +31 10 7944977

4. International Management and Consultancy: 30 ECTS, Fall semester In every sector of society, change managers and consultants play an essential role in improving the performance of organisations; especially nowadays, where companies need to be extremely adaptive to a continuously changing environment. Consultants, internal or external, analyse problems throughout the organisation and give advice on how companies can innovate in such a way, that they create both profit and customer/employee satisfaction. Change managers are expected to implement these changes or innovations. During this study programme, students acquire the knowledge and skills which will prepare them for a career as a consultant or change manager. With a wide spectrum of consultancy training, assignments and classes, both individually and collectively,

embedded in a context of services management, we offer you a complete consultancy and change management package. If you pass, you will be able to start as a beginning consultant.

Context of services companies The reason we focus on management of services within the consultancy training is, that companies need to distinguish themselves from their competitors by the quality of the services they deliver. The battle for the customer is not to be won by means of the delivery of a product only, but rather by means of the customer's satisfaction with service and treatment. Even in the industrial sector, companies are faced with the challenge of offering product- and service combinations to their customers to create profit. This means that companies have to develop an integrated services concept which has consequences for all company processes (operational processes, marketing, hrm, etc). If you work as a consultant, you need to know the ins and outs of the services sector, that, in the Netherlands, covers approximately 70% of all companies. Please find your complete course plan in the table below. In addition to the main topics above mentioned, we will introduce you to the Netherlands with a comprehensive cultural programme, together with your fellow Dutch students. What students do we seek? This course has been specially developed for students that have a particular interest and talent in management and consultancy issues. We look for students who understand that companies exist of people and that changing organisations is about seeking coherence and consensus between them. You will be studying in an international class, with both Dutch and international students.

Please note that International Management and Consultancy will consume quite some time of your stay in the Netherlands. If you like to invest in yourself, your development, your future; if you are up to a challenge, if you are enthousiastic and willing to learn, we will be most grateful to receiving you here and will return to you a great deal of knowledge and experience that is ready-to-use after you have successfully finished it. Rotterdam Business School The programmes International Human Resource Management, Risk and Investment management and the program Business opportunities in sustainability and innovation are taught by the Rotterdam Business School. Just like in the world of business, our focus is fully international. We work closely together with partners in the business from all around the world. Together with our partners we are able to offer our students the global outlook they need. Real life business cases are at the heart of many of these programmes. The dynamic harbour city of Rotterdam offers the perfect location. Home to the largest port in Europe, Rotterdam has global trade and transport links. A major factor of our success is staying closely tuned to the pulse of the city. Because Rotterdam Business School wants to be closely connected to society and teach students to link their knowledge and skills to a sense of social responsibility, we closely cooperate with businesses and organisations. This benefits both the practical field as well as the quality of our education. Project assignments from businesses and organisations, internships and graduation projects, both in the Netherlands and abroad, are an important part of the curriculum. 7. International Human Resource Management: 30 ECTS, Fall semester HR is the center of business performance Today Human Resources (HR) is at the center of business performance. HR professionals have an important role in driving decisions that enable their organisations to thrive in the short and longer therm. Partnership approach is vital in order for HR professionals to be able to deliver maximum benefit to their organisations.

The importance of HR people The increasing rate at which business re-invent and reorganize themselves mean HR’s role in making change happen is in demand. Another example is the employee engagement. Specialists are using data to understand and make decisions based on what motivates their employees to perform at work. But most important is the fast foreseen increasing globalisation of the profession over the next five to ten years. This implicates a developing future for HR professionals and leaders.

The programme – working together with CIPD The Rotterdam Business School offers this programme in close cooperation with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD); The world’s largest Chartered Human Resources development professional body.

During the curriculum there is a variety of elements in the context of Human Resources that you will learn:

• Developing professional practice business issues • Managing, coordinating and using information • Improving organizational performance and employee engagement

Advantages program

• Benefiting from professional curriculum development (not only classroom training but also e-learning-tracks, recent cases, webinars of HR-professionals)

• The IHRM programme offers a course with the possibility of a world-wide recognised certification on top of a certified BBA

8. Risk and Investment Management: 30 ECTS, Fall semester Decision making strategy, how does it works? When companies exploit international business opportunities like export and foreign direct investment, the theory prescribes that the company makes a profound investment analysis including an assessment of the risk-return trade-off, all with the focus on maximising shareholder wealth. Surprisingly (or maybe not?) decision makers in small and medium sized enterprises hardly ever execute this assessment. They emphasize in their choices on intuition and a very high appetite for risk and not on quantitative methods and models.

To determine how successful this decision making strategy actually is, to what extent it has consequences for the value creating ability of the company and how it could be improved, this Risk and Investment Management programme explores the frontiers where country risk assessment meets psychology c.q. Behavioural Risk Managment.

Page 25: Brochure Science without Borders 2013-2014

25

The program, where is it about • Country Risk Management Country risk is a broad concept which brings together the varied disciplines of economics, finance, geopolitics, sociology and history. This course sets out to provide a solid understanding of the concepts and methodologies involved in formulating successful strategies for international risk assessment and management. With a balance between theory and practice, the course assesses the opportunities arising from the growing integration of international financial markets and presents and analysis the various sources of country risk. It provides an in-depth coverage of information sources and country risk service providers and explains techniques for assessing country risks.

• Behavioural Risk Management You will use all the tools available in the field to uncover how judgment and decision making in country risk assessment should be executed from a game theoretical perspective. Next you will enter the field of psychology to determine how the human mind actually works (and what mistakes it makes) when confronted with investment cases and country risk assessment. Last you investigate how you can help decision makers in small and medium sized enterprises to make better decisions, taking into consideration the limits of the human mind.

10. Lifestyle & Design: 60 ECTS (major programme), one year

Jeroen Bloemers With the term "lifestyle", we mean how people express their personal lives through their choice of clothing, the gadgets they purchase and use, how they decorate their homes and their work and living spaces, and their choice of leisure activities. By shaping our lifestyle and by carefully constructing our identity, we tell others about ourselves and how we wish to be seen in our world. On the one hand the profession focuses on the communication and presentation of products for a specific group of users (art direction and styling), and on the other hand on the industry or the manufacturer. In the latter capacity, you are the advisor in areas concerning future desires, needs and consumer behaviour (trend forecasting of trend analysis).

What will you learn at the academy?

You will develop the capacity to design visually innovative or market-oriented concepts drawing on your own artistic vision, and to create striking visual images. You will also learn and recognise the essential styles and currents in culture, art and design. You are interested in both historical contexts as well as in the current developments in your field,

and you know how to apply your knowledge appropriately in practical projects. To this end, you will expand your knowledge and skills in the area of presentation techniques, photography, digital media and materials. You will also gain an understanding and skills in the areas of art and design, marketing and societal developments.

The study programme will start by looking at the subjects that are essential for the profession, such as social identity, cultural currents, the era we live in, the consumer society, market forces, and societal developments. You will then start to develop your own profile in the profession by applying what you have learned and the skills that you have acquired to specific areas such as consumer groups, communications, branding, market strategies and concept development.

The broad orientation of this particular study programme prepares you for an overarching position, managing multidisciplinary projects, giving them a cutting edge in their field. To be able to do this, you need to be a valuable designer with a wide body of knowledge of market trends and society. You will also have sensitive antennae for future values and a clear vision for the right use of visuals.

developments. You will use all this continuously to create your very own, artistic, communication product.

As a graphic designer you are both a specialist and a mediator. Specialist, because you are able to develop a creative or autonomous concept and design a meaningful visual form with the components listed above. Mediator, because you are the pivotal lynchpin in the publicity process as a creator, but also as an initiator and motivator. From this central position you will develop strategies to reach your audience and to take them with you into the story you want to tell, and give your client an identity.

What will you learn at the academy?

The connection between the profession and an innovative, open, individual and artistic outlook are at the heart of graphic design. You will learn how to develop the "tools", knowledge and skills required for the profession and use them for your personal design mentality. Your personal design mentality entails creative research, the desire to be innovative and bring innovation to the world around you, to experiment, to self-reflect, to adopt a critical attitude to the media, and to think and act in cross-media terms.

As a graphic designer you visualise the message and are responsible for it. You may sometimes be the initiator of the message. In this case, design and art almost merge. You develop the form in which a message will go out into the world. You design the experience that goes with the message.

After completing our study programme, you will be equipped to start your own business, or work as a freelancer or at a design agency. You will design house styles and decors and design for magazines, books, newspapers, websites, leaders, and posters. Your designs will appear in the public arena, on textiles, on the internet and on new media carriers such as the iPad.

Art is a universal form of expression. It contributes to our visual and cultural awareness, to visual communication and to diversity in the private and public environments. As a medium of culture, art is given meaning through personal expression and interpretation and thus takes on cultural meaning. This is what makes art a professional craft embodied in the artist.

Art has changed radically over the last decades in terms of media, methodology and materials. Many dividing lines have blurred, those between "high" en "low" culture for example and between autonomous and applied works. Further, artists have now acquired the role of multi-facetted cultural entrepreneur.

Changes are also clearly visible in the exhibiting of the work. Apart from the traditional environments such as museums and galleries, there are now countless platforms – some of which are very influential. These include festivals, biennales, artists' initiatives and digital environments.

Artists are continuously entering new territories in order to connect themselves and their work to society. They define their own areas of interest and demonstrate their understanding of their position at the heart of societal development and at the dynamic centre of image culture worldwide.

What will you learn at the academy? You will develop your visual skills through multi-dimensional training in all aspects of the profession. These include artistic research, concept development, technical skills, communication and presentation, and entrepreneurial skills in the arts. You will also study theory and acquire research skills that will enable you to delve into the treasures of art history and to make connections to current discourse in the arts. By doing projects every term which cover all the facets of the profession, you learn to collaborate with others, and to organise and document your activities. You will design a personal artistic plan and will develop its content and structure with your tutors. Your focus will be on the international aspects of the profession, on current practices or on the continuation of your studies at master level. You will also learn to work in the public space and to work with the multitude of new possibilities that digital technology offers. During the final phase of your study programme, you will apply your professional knowledge to areas of research drawn from current developments in culture and society. You will select a graduation specialisation from one of three areas of practice on which to concentrate during your study: autonomous, social or commercial practice.

This study programme is demanding. Apart from talent and a great affinity with various forms of visual expression, it requires a feeling for tradition and the daring to experiment.
