BACKGROUNDModelled after the traditional Swedish folkboat, the Contessa 26 proved itself a strong, seaworthy and capableocean cruiser from the outset of prodcution. Many of these boats competed in the OSTAR (Observer Single-handed Transatlantic Race) in the 1980's. This brave little boat really became famous when 18-year-old TaniaAebi chose the design for her solo circumnavigation in 1985 for her adventures in Varuna. In 1996, BrianCaldwell sailed a Contessa 26 to become the first to circumnavigate under the age of 21.

Crazy Love is the perfect solo sailing vessel and iswell proven in this category. There is however roomfor a couple to liveaboard as proven by her previousowners who sailed her across the Pacific. Crazy Love is a single-spreader sloop carrying near-new fully battened Ullman mainsail and furlinggenoa and is equipped with a symmetric spinnakerand Pacific Light self steering wind vane. It doesn’t take much wind to get the boat movingdespite her full keel, and she sails well to windwarddue to her narrow profile. On her recent Pacificcrossing, there were several days when shecomfortably covered 120 nautical miles in a day.

Her power and navigation systems are suitable forlong distance cruising with two new batteries, andsolar panels which provide ample power for severaldays passage-making without sunshine. A modest galley midship is equipped with a stove(which doubles as a chart table), a sink with fresh andsalt water. Sleeping up to 4 with an enclosed toilet,living aboard would suit one person best with a V-berth forward and two single saloon berths in themain cabin. A small inboard Yanmar marine diesel providesauxillary power. Crazy Love was anti-fouled in Sept2019 prior to arriving in Australia.

On DeckCRAZY LOVE is a proven pedigree pocket cruiser and willoffer safe and secure passage at sea. On deck, there is araised bulwark that offers a great deal of security whengoing forward in heavy weather. There are substantial lifelines and handholds on the cabintop for added safety. The foredeck features an anchorlocker with 25m chain and 70m of nylon rode. An 8kgBruce anchor ensures good holding in every situationencountered across the Pacific.

COCKPIT LAYOUT

Considering her length, the cockpit on Crazy Love is quitelarge. She is steered by a tiller attached to a transom-hung rudder with space to comfortably sit 6 on a day sails.She is well suited to the solo sailor with self steering andtiller autopilot with enough room for stretching out.

InteriorFit for ocean voyages, Crazy Love's interior is cosy andinviting and offers all the essentials needed when atsea. Headroom is 5ft8" due to a lowered floor andbubble coachroof which replaces the usual slidinghatch. This makes it stronger and more watertight forrough ocean conditions. All domestic plumbing wasreplaced in 2019.

ACCOMMODATION

The boat sleeps 4 with a double V-berth forward, asmall head and adjacent hanging locker. A smallgalley and navigation table are positioned aft of themain bulkhead, with two sea berths, each over 2mlong, completeing the accommodation. The interior iswell ventillated with 2 x 12v fans and numerousupgraded opening ports. Storage including numerousoffshore spares are found under both berths.

THE GALLEY

The galley consists of an Origo 2-burner metho stove(complete with pots, pans and utensils) and a smallsink with both fresh and saltwater taps. Crazy Lovecan hold up to 120L of water in her main tank (locatedunder the V-berth), with capacity for an additional 50Lwithin jerry cans located in the aft cockpit lazarette.

NAVIGATION

Crazy Love is fitted with wind vane self steering  andGarmin GPS Map78 which is powered by the boat's12v system. A new AIS Vesper watchmate unitintegrates to an ipad with charts overlay with anchorwatch feature. There is a backup AIS receiver on thenewly installed VHF radio, a backup tiller auto pilot,ACR offshore EPIRB and new Raymarine Depthsounder - all of which make this an impeccably wellequipped and safe vessel.
