BIDDESTONE FETE SATURDAY 28th JUNE 2013

Well, what a day! The sun shone and once again everyone pitched in to create a really wonderful and very unique day on our beau ‐ful village green. We raised just over £5,000, which is fantas c. We spent a bit this year prior to the fete. We had a clear out in the fete stable last autumn and threw out some ancient tables that were no longer useable. We also needed some more gazebos to replace those broken in the strong winds last year and also more in case of rain!. We also bought some new lights for the Christmas tree on the Green as a few people had said they did not like the bright white and blue lights so we purchased some warm white ones. Gazebos £ 100.00 Tables £1,095.00 Christmas tree lights £ 80.00 TOTAL COSTS £1,275.00 TOTAL AFTER COSTS £3,725.00 The breakdown of money raised is as follows: NB figures shown are pre fete costs Grand Raffle £1,300 Food and Drink £ 1,080 Childrens Stalls £ 1,080 Books £ 200 Cake Stall £ 200 Bo le Stall £ 170 Preserves £ 70 New to You Clothes £ 230 Bric‐a‐Brac £ 350 Biddestone Gi s £ 320 The Fete Commi ee have agreed to the following dona ons: St Nicholas Church Biddestone £500 St Nicholas Church Slaughterford £500 By Brook Valley School £500 Biddestone Broadsheet £750 Biddestone and Hartham WI £100 Royal Bri sh Legion £100 TOTAL £2,450 We have set some money aside for any upfront costs next year and we would also like any ideas for something tangible we could buy or get made for our village. The Commi ee have some ideas but we would welcome some more! There are a few resigna ons to announce this year. Kathy Hu on is sadly stepping down this year. She has remained on the Fete Commi ee since leaving the village a couple of years ago, and her help has been invaluable. She will be sorely missed. Her husband Chris Hu on also resigns this year as our Fete

Treasurer. We thank him for all his hard work over the years. Julia Tisdale has kindly offered to take on this role next year. Carolyn Madley is also stepping down this year. She has been a huge supporter of the Fete for many years and was a wonderful Chairman. Thank you Carolyn for all you have done over the years. It is also me for me to step down as Chairman this year. I have really enjoyed my six years on the Com‐mi ee, the last three as Chairman whilst my children have been at home, but my youngest child starts school in September and I am hoping to venture back into the workplace. So, we are looking for a new Chairman, could it be you? It is the most rewarding role and you have a readymade and very keen Commi ee to help you. It would be such a shame to see such an important part of village life end for lack of a chairman so I would ask anyone who is interested to please contact me (713420). Our AGM this year will be on Tuesday 8th October at 7.30pm in the Village Hall and I would urge all those who love our Village Fete to come. In recent years it is only Commi ee members that have a end‐ed but I would very much appreciate other villagers to a end to discuss the future of our Fete. My thanks as always to all those who worked so hard prior to and on Fete Day, what a great day it was! Melissa Wa s and Commi ee Members Chris Draper, Vicky Ellio , David and Janet Hartley, Mary In der Rieden, Mary Mullens, Ronnie Robinson, Anita Powell, Kate Ross, Julia Tisdale, Chloe Waller.

BEST KEPT VILLAGE COMPETITION 2013 The Parish Council are happy to announce that Biddestone has won first place in the Medium Village in North Wilt-shire category in the above competition. The judges commented that the general appearance of the village was ex-tremely neat and the grass areas in the centre of the village were very well maintained. Thanks indeed are due to Andy Granger and David Taylor for all their time and effort in the maintenance of The Green and surrounds. The judges thought the residential gardens were well kept as were the hedges (apart from the one leading to the recrea-tional ground which needs a trim), and special mentions for the pond, churchyard and playing fields which are all looking good! Thanks to the teams who work so hard on these areas. The allotments were also mentioned by the judges commenting “allotment holders should be congratulated on growing such a variety of produce without a water supply”. The judges thought the Telephone Box needed “as good clean” but the public loos were in good or-der. Thanks to Rodney Mansell for keeping them in good order. Thanks to everyone who in any way contrib-utes to maintaining such a high standard of orderliness in Biddestone – let’s keep this going as we go forward to the next stage of the competition. This competition is spon-sored by Hills Group and the CPRE (Campaign to Protect Rural England) who actively campaign to keep the countryside and greenfield sites unthreatened by weak-ened planning regulations which, in turn, make for easier planning consent for devel-opers. As an early entry was made for the competi-tion we have been awarded ten bags of Hills Organic Compost and it has been suggested that these are given to the people who kindly maintain the War Memorial (Rosie from Biddestone Manor), the Village Turnpike (Jan Scott), and other flower boxes around the village (Andy Granger, Joyce Wood and David Millard). Thanks to you all. It is a team effort which makes Biddestone what it is – we don’t know exactly when the next judging will take place, but please keep up the good work! CM

Biddestone & Hartham WI The August outing this year was to Bradford–on-Avon for a walking tour of the town, followed by lunch at a new bistro by the river. The guide for the walk was Mr. Michael Marshman who had given a very inter-esting talk to members at the March meeting earlier in the year and he was able to continue giving more knowledgeable information on the walk encompassing the area from St. Margaret’s Hill to the Saxon church. It had been a very worthwhile and enjoyable day out for the ten members who came, and Mr. Marshman was thanked for his voluntary leadership. At the next meeting on 18th September guest speaker, Sue Roberts, will give a talk entitled “Animal Adventures on holiday in South Africa”. Visitors are welcome. 2pm for 2.15pm at the Village Hall. A small entry fee of £2 helps our funds.

BVH&RT 10th Anniversay & Two Cricket Matches

On Wednesday 21st August 2013 to celebrate 10th anniversary of the opening of Biddestone Village Hall a friendly cricket match between Biddestone Lads and Dads and Biddestone Next Generation. The match between Matt Powell's 11 and a team put together by Phill Roberts, following a challenge made at a chance meeting on the platform at Chippenham station. Matt's team, known as the "New Generation" lost the toss and were put in to bat. It was a 20 over match with the batsman retiring if they scored 20 runs or over. The game started brightly, with Matt and his batting partner, Paul Tisdale, making light work of the bowling and both scoring 20 runs. The New Generation continued to score freely until the introduction of Tim "The Pilot" in to the bowling attack with his "Chine man" style of bowling. The high altitude and slow pace of the ball caused the batsman problems, with Tim taking a 2 wicket maiden! Some fine catching from Aiden Daniels and a run-out through quick hands by Henry Entwistle, reduced the New Generation's batsman but the score board continued to tick over at a brisk pace. After Robbie Foston had re-shaped Scott Mernam's stumps, Paul Tisdale returned to the crease. He was not about to hang around and deftly dispatched the next few balls to the boundary, even threating the lives of those who were walking on the nearby pitch with two tremendous sixes! The New Generation closed on 146 and Phill Roberts' team, the "Lads 'n Dad's" (albeit more lads than Dads!) started the chase. Phill Roberts was dropped off his second ball, which proved costly as he went to 20 and retire in the next over! The "Lads" continued to score freely with both Harry Roberts and Josh Bol-ton retiring. The middle order was then under pressure, with Frankie Foston digging out his first four in his short career, before being bowled. Further good catching slowed the run rate and reduced the numbers but the Lads 'n Dads reached the tar-get with 12 balls to spare. The game was played in good spirit with some lively commentary from Andy Ward backed Test Match special music! The teams have vowed to arrange a return match next season but preceded with extensive net practice before taking the field. Thanks to the two umpires (both a couple of dads ) and to Steve Collier for scoring

Thanks to David Wylie for the use of his pictures

Biddestone Arms v Biddestone Farmers at Biddestone CC on August 8th 2013. After a gap of several years Ian Smith revived the tradition of gathering a group of farmers ( lawyers, builders, surveyors & chief executives) to challenge the village pub to a game of cricket - a match that used to be an annual event in years gone by. The farmers team comprised a number of two generation farming families -including Corp, Smith & Jones- who downed their tools and switched off their en-gines for an hour or three to prove that their skills extend far beyond those of ploughing , planting and running B & B's. The landlord, Jim Hedges, selected a team stronger than his beer and had no hesitation in inviting the farmers to face the guile & flight offered up by "Pilot" Tim Akin and a characteristically mean spell by Mike Crystal. Steve Jones surprised us all ( and himself) by top scoring with 21 - -supported ably by captain Smith and their ringer Singer. A total of 97 for 3 looked respectable if just a little light. What the Farmers hadn't accounted for was the fact that some of the Biddestone Arms patrons are both regular drinkers and cricketers and young Harry Madley & Hugo Hudson-Wall had the game in the bag and both retired before the first wicket fell . The farmers took just the one wicket - with Smith claiming that of the enegetic Matt Powell to a scorching catch by Graham Corp. Perhaps it was the loss of John "the Bolt" Penny to a double hamstring strain that put the Farmers off their game -or that Jim Hedges' recipe of youth and experience blended as well as his Wednesday night curry? Either way -it was a great village evening -that extended late into the night at the Arms and looks like becoming an annual fixture on the village calendar. Biddestone Farmers - 97 for 3 Biddestone Arms - 98 for 1

BIDDESTONE VILLAGE HALL AND RECREATION TRUST MINUTES OF EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING, 13 AUGUST 2013

Present: Mike Chrystal (in the Chair), Kris Boulton, John Chambers, Stewart Entwistle, Alison Flint, Colin Kempshall, Mary Mul-lens, Lorena Roberts, Ronnie Robinson, Ian Smith Also present: Shelagh Ball Apologies: Mark Hibbert Ronnie was welcomed to her first meeting. Minutes of Executive Committee meeting on 9 July 2013 Agreed and signed as a correct record. Matters Arising Mesh under barrier. No further news. Defibrillator. Gill had written to Alison Butler (who raised this matter originally), but had heard no more. Change of right-of-way. Stewart reported that he had written to Wiltshire Council setting out what we would like to do and en-quiring about the process, probable costs and the likelihood of its success. Other enquiries had revealed that we might succeed, but that the cost would be about £2,500. Letter to Dog Warden’s Department. Mike said he had written as agreed; no reply yet received. After a further discussion about other incidents with dogs running free, it was agreed unanimously that dogs on Trust land should be kept on a lead. Large, official notices should be purchased and erected at appropriate points around the ground pointing out that this was private land used for sport, and all dogs should be kept on leads. The Committee recognised that this would penalise responsible dog-owners, and a notice explaining the need for this action should be put in the Broadsheet and on the website. Colin/Stewart Committee minutes requested by Andy Short. Mike had written to Andy replying to this. Cost of sensor lighting. Colin reported that he had obtained a quote to replace the exterior bulkhead lights and wire them to a PIR sensor at the front of the Hall. The rear lamps could be wired to another PIR without being replaced. The cost was £728 to in-clude a timer and dusk-to-dawn sensor, but it was decided not to have those items. Colin would obtain a new quote for just the lamps and PIR. Colin added that the spotlights in the kitchen were defective, and should be replaced with a strip light, costing £74.68; this was agreed. Colin BT hut. Colin reported that this had been sold on behalf of the Cricket Club for £80; the Cricket Club had made a donation of £40 to the Trust. Skittles. No further news about new teams; draw for KO Cup to be done at next meeting. Mike Financial Report John circulated copies of his reports for June and July. The bank balances were as follows: Current Acc. £6,757.42, Deposit Acc. £8,594.97, Playground Acc. £4,283.99. He said the aged debt of £3,020 from the Social Club/Bar would have to be written off, although VAT could be reclaimed. He reported that he and Mike had had useful discussions with Wells &Young regarding their loan. They were willing for the current arrangement to continue, but would like bar sales to be increased and would support us with one-off promotions at special occasions, eg wedding receptions. There remained the option for us to pay off part of the loan, and this should be considered again when our overall finances became clearer. There was an aged debt of £187.50 from the Ten-nis Club, on which he was trying to get further information; meanwhile £960 was to be refunded to the Tennis Club for an over-paid donation. John would talk to Andrew Stafford about the need for a Standing Order. Our current electricity contract would terminate on 30 September and this would automatically be renewed on a one-year basis unless notice was given by end August. After a brief discussion it was agreed notice of termination should be sent. Alternatives should then be explored. John Alison passed to John an invoice for £400 from Wiltshire Council for refuse collection. Treatment of old pavilion Mike reported that he and Stewart had met Andy Short informally to talk about various ideas about the use of the pavilion, and he suggested that a sub-committee consisting of himself, Stewart and two members of the Cricket Club be formed to discuss in more detail the whole issue of the old pavilion, the club room and the changing rooms. This was agreed. It was pointed out that this also involved the Football Club. Mike had also arranged to meet with the Planning Officer. Methuen Field Mike read out the reply to his letter to Mr. Waltho, Land Agent of the Methuen Estate. This included the statement that there would have to be a formal lease/licence for the use of this field in order to protect his client’s interests, and the provision of vehicu-lar access would depend on the long-term use of the field. Mr. Waltho seemed happy that it was used for football, and that lights had been erected; Ian recalled discussions with him many years ago, which had approved the use of the field for football. Mike would draft a reply to Mr. Waltho and clear this with Stewart. Mike/Stewart Bookings Colin reported that bookings were down, as usual at this time of the year, but the Pilates class on Thursday evenings had proved so successful that there were now two sessions of one hour each. Events Lorena reported that, following Alison’s request that the 10th Anniversary of the Opening of the Hall should be marked in some

Page 11

way, she had suggested a village cricket match and barbecue – this would be on the evening of the 21st August. Phil Roberts and Matt Powell would put together two teams, hopefully all from the village, for a fun, limited-overs match, starting at 6 p.m. Jim (Biddestone Arms) had offered to lend us his barbecue, and the Bar would be open. Lorena asked for volunteers to help; they should be at the Hall by 5.30 pm. She suggested this should not be regarded as a profit-raising event, but we should charge £1 for a burger to cover costs. She would provide posters and fliers to go throughout the village. Alison would write to Jane Scott (who opened the Hall) and the people who had been involved in the planning, building and running of the Hall during the early years to invite them to attend. The next Moviola film would be The Great Gatsby on 13 September. The Harvest Supper would probably be on Saturday 19 October. The next Committee meeting should discuss the suggestions for Bonfire Night, made after last year’s event. It was hoped the Cricket Club would be in charge of the organisation again, and the Tennis Club should be asked to provide marshals. Mike/Kris/Ian Standpipe at the allotments Colin reported that the water to the Gibbs Horn cricket field was on a meter situated by the stile in Cuttle Lane; this was paid for by the Trust. We should consider the costs of running a pipe to the allotments, installing another meter and who would pay for this and the water they used. Derek Thornhill had confirmed that the allotment-holders did want this facility. It was suggested that £10 should be added to the current rent of £25 per allotment to cover costs. Colin would speak to Derek again and write to all allotment-holders. Kris asked that any necessary work be carried out before Christmas. Colin Any Other Business Lorena suggested that a few big cricket matches had been taking place when Shelagh had not been asked to open the Bar, and she wondered whether we were losing opportunities to raise money; Kris said it was difficult to know how many people would attend, especially for junior matches. In reply to a question from Mary, Colin said the replacement doors had been ordered. Alison had received a letter from RoSPA confirming their usual visit in September to inspect the Playground. Alison had also received notification from Community First about their AGM, etc. Mike reported that Tim Knight still wanted to hire a football pitch on Sunday mornings and would pay £35 per match. If the main changing rooms were not available, he suggested they might change in the sheds by the cricket pitch. Kris had no objection but suggested they should pay a damage deposit up front. It was agreed £25 should go to the Trust and £10 to the Cricket Club. Better nets might be needed between the football pitch and the road. Date of next meeting Confirmed as Tuesday 11 September at 7.15 p.m. (Alison gave her apologies.)

WET THROUGH Being now completely wet through to the skin I begin to see I was a fool to mind it. This that wets me, what is it but good rain That has left half England growing greener behind it? The trees are drunk with it; the greedy grasses Hold up their infinitesimal hands to catch it; The pools to hold it break their looking-glasses And the ditch runs with a stormy noise to match it. This cloud like a tanker or rich merchantman Has come from far, with the great wind that fans it, And over Exmore or Cotswold it began To unload its precious freight, after a long transit. Then eastward over the shires it took its tour By Avon and by Thames, by Test and Kennet, By Arun and Ouse, Medway and Stour, Pouring such wealth, the earth cannot contain it. And now like Medieval pilgrims or Sturdy Elizabethan beggars I, Wet to the skin, look up, and see the core Of darkness rent in golden rags on high. The last drops fall; the riddled pools resume Their smooth reflections; only the hidden freshet Is loud still, running its tunnelled gloom Where strawberry, sloe, and bramble shoots enmesh it. Outpacing me, the enormous cloud stems on. Its hold still heavy-laden, its hull black, And leaves a world new-minted; even the sun Seems washed, and with adored heat burns my back. (Hal Summers)

VISIT FROM THE HOUGAARD FAMILY TO BIDDESTONE Recently the Hougaard family visited the village on a trip back from Canada. Jill and Bjorn came to the village several years ago and lived in Corner House with three of their chil-dren – Marcus, Caelen, and Anna-Sofie. Not long afterward Oliver was born and the house was well and truly full! Jill worked very hard alongside Libby King-come to get the children’s play area up and running at the Village Hall which is now used by so many of the village chil-dren. They are all very well and loved re-visiting Biddestone. It was so good to see them all again and one day they are hoping to return here but, in the mean-time, send their best wishes to all who remember them. CM

the great gatsby

An aspiring writer falls under the spell of an aloof millionaire with designs for the young scribe's un-happily married cousin in Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's celebrated novel. It's the spring of 1922, and wide-eyed Midwesterner Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) has just moved to New York City in pursuit of the American Dream. Settling into a home next door to wealthy Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), Carraway grows increasingly fascinated by the elaborate parties held at his new neighbor's estate. Meanwhile, across the bay, Carraway's cousin Daisy (Carey Mulligan) flounders in her marriage to philandering aristocrat Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). Inspired by the debauchery on display at Gatsby's wild parties and the lives of the wealthy elite, Carraway begins putting pen to paper as it gradually becomes clear that his cousin and the millionaire share a complicated romantic past that remains unresolved.
