Meta Vacuum Project. To Innovate upon the traditional vacuuming experience by making the vacuum conformable to a variety of flooring surfaces and shapes. We designed a vacuum that could better adapt to consumers needs. Team Members: Brit Leek + Ellise Smolenyak

Research.Consumer Survey Conclusions.

Goals.-To create a better solution for optimal maneuverability.-To find a better way to integrate attachments.-To make it as versatile as possible.

-A stick vacuum should be as powerful as a full size

-Lightweight is better

-Long power cord

-Maneuverability is very important

-Should have easy canister open and empty

-Needs adjustable motor-driven brush bar

-Should have easy assembly

-Attachments should be easily accessible and secure

-Exhaust should be away from vacuum target

-Filters should be reusable and easy to clean

Concept. What is the best shape for a vacuum head?

- On carpet a wide suction path and motorized brush bar, to agitate dirt from deep within carpet fibers, is necessary.- On wood flooring a “V” shaped head works best to direct dirt and debris towards the center where there is greater suction.

- A two-part head could conform to corners and around furniture as well as various flooring surfaces.

- More one-pass-paths would make cleaning faster and easier.

Page 10: Brit Leek's 2013 Portfolio

Ideate.By separating the vacuum head into two pieces it can rotate into new positions. Also, by combining attachment pieces onto the design of the wand we eliminate the need for individual accessory attachments.

Innovations.Adaptable vacuum head

The Meta Vacuum features a redesigned articulating vacuum head, consisting of two wings that pivot along a center circular track. Each wing of the vacuum head can independently move to fit into corners, rotate to move past obstacles, and spring to the most effective position for either bare or carpeted floors.

Page 12: Brit Leek's 2013 Portfolio

Innovations.Integrated multi-use attachment

The Meta vacuum design tackles the issue of easily lost and hard-to-secure attachments by eliminating the accessory attachments all together, and integrating the wand and attachment pieces into the design of the upright vacuum itself.

Meta Hand Project. Meta Hand is a product designed to be a complimentary item to the full-sized Meta Vacuum. It follows the theme of adaptability to better fit the spaces in which it is being used.Team Members: Brit Leek + Ellise Smolenyak

Page 16: Brit Leek's 2013 Portfolio

Research. The fixed size nozzle of a traditional hand vacuum does not adapt well to the variety of surfaces it is generally used to clean:

-It is often too wide to fit into crevices

- Not wide enough to effectively clean other surfaces without making many cumbersome passes

Goals.- A wide suction path and ability to fit into tight crevices without using accessories

-Cordless for maximum portability

-Multi-surface versatility

Page 17: Brit Leek's 2013 Portfolio

Concept. The adaptable nozzle opens down its center with the aid of electromagnets. Retractable bristles allow it to clean upholstery with ease.

Ideation Goals.Meta product family look

–Easy view and empty canister –Rechargeable battery– Adaptable nozzle movement

Adaptable Nozzle Cleaning.Meta Hand vacuum features an adaptable nozzle

tip, which allows it to open for wider passes along surfaces, or close to fit into tight crevices.

Pet Project. Many pet owners have concerns about the correct method for trimming their pet’s nails. This series of products was developed to make the nail trimming experience less stressful for both the owner and pet.

Page 26: Brit Leek's 2013 Portfolio

Research.Within the center of each nail is the blood and nerve supply called the quick.

- Black or dirty nails do not allow for an easy view of the quick.

- Cutting into the quick will result in pain and bleeding.

Page 27: Brit Leek's 2013 Portfolio

Current Methods Fall Short:.- Traditional clippers: good for taking off length quickly, but can easily injure a pet if the nail is trimmed too short, and leave the nail with a jagged edge.

- Dremmel rotary tools: slowly grind down the nail, making it easier to avoid the quick and leave the nail smooth, but take a long time to take down length.

- Files: more ergonomic to hold than a Dremmel tool, but take even longer to bring down the nail length.

Page 28: Brit Leek's 2013 Portfolio

Concept. The VeinViewer® system uses harmless near-infrared (NIR) light to detect subcutaneous blood and create a image of the patient’s superficial vein pattern directly onto the surface of the skin in real time. The hemoglobin in your blood absorbs the light, so veins appear black. Regardless of the patients skin color veins are clearly and easily seen in precise detail. This technology essentially allows you to see veins through the skin.

...What if we could give our clients x-ray vision?

Page 29: Brit Leek's 2013 Portfolio

Ideate.–Ergonomic –Technology integration –Quick length removal –Smooth result

Page 30: Brit Leek's 2013 Portfolio

Innovations.A two part system that allows pet owners to quickly and safely trim and smooth their pet’s nails.

Step 1. Quick View clippers- NIR technology reapplied By using the same technology applied in the VeinViewer® system you are able to clearly see the location of the quick even on the darkest nails.

Step 2. Cordless smoothing – reshaping the rotaryPuts a sanding disk at the end of an easy-to-hold handle to smooth your pets nails quickly after clipping with a more natural motion [much like brushing your teeth.]

Portable cardiac monitoring This project aimed to redesign a wearable device that monitors the heart’s electrical activity. Portable monitoring devices are used to determine how the heart responds to normal activity, which allows doctors diagnose a number of heart rate and rhythm conditions.

Page 34: Brit Leek's 2013 Portfolio

Research.Traditionally portable monitoring devices consist of:

-Multiple adhesive electrodes worn on the patients chest -Lead wires which attach every electrode to the recorder - A recording device, which sometimes also transfers the data.

Through a number of monitor patient and health care professional interviews, we were able to determine several areas that affected both consumer comfort and compliance in using the device correctly.

Goals.- Eliminate the need for wires that need to be worn.- Rehouse the monitor in a smaller and more comfortable/waterproof package -Incorporate device feedback to indicate the device is on and working.

Page 35: Brit Leek's 2013 Portfolio

Concept.Integrating Wireless Tech: By incorporating low cost,

ultra- low-power wireless networking modules, lead wires can be eliminated

Rethinking Materials: If repackaged in silicone the device becomes comfortable, waterproof, and semi-translucent to blend with a variety of skin tones.

Let them know it’s on: By integrating feedback lights within both the recorder and electrodes patients will know the device is on and working.

Page 36: Brit Leek's 2013 Portfolio

Ideate.Through research of current tech and sketching a three-part-system consisting of two electrodes and one removable recorder was determined to be an accurate, easy-to-understand, and easy-to-wear solution. The electrodes let you know they are on by lighting along to the beat of your heart for a few moments when they are initially applied.

Innovations.Soft, Sporty, Low-Profile, Waterproof, Wireless

The soft silicone packaging allows the device to be worn in a variety of situation where the traditional package would not allow such as the shower, or while swimming, and gives it a sporty look. Wireless modules allow the electrodes to have smooth surfaces by eliminating both the lead wires and lead wire attachment points.
