The Brisbane suburb of Tarragindi was first known as Sandy Creek. Tarragindi is a gorgeous suburb, with streets lined with leafy trees. The first thing I noticed when looking around was how green it is. Not far from the city, and so close to the Expressway, Tarragindi is really not only a pretty suburb but a convenient one.

Rent is pretty high, but not ridiculous. House prices have been increasing for some time now with the demand growing for property in this area. Not much around in the way of cafes, shops etc, but enough good ones to satisfy even the fussiest coffee drinkers.

Loved breakfast at Grumpy’s Espresso

and dinner at Tarragindi Thai was beautiful. A great mix of people, with lots of young families around.

A few hills with great city views, and lots of street parking as there isn’t too many units around.

I’d live here.

T he temperature has DROPPED! I have re-inflated my space bags full of winter clothes, I’m wearing

scarves not just for their decorative quality and I’ve started making tea. This has been extremely pleasant, but I’ve stopped going out. This winter, I refuse to be a homebody. So for my benefit as much as yours, here are a couple of ways you can stay warm without feeling like the Michelin man.First, we’ll try an easy one. You can stay in your jeans and jumper for this one and you

still get to eat hot stuff, but you do have to leave the house! Pop in to Mangal Chargrill in Springwood for a bowl from their new soup menu.Next, go to a restaurant with outdoor heaters. I am like a moth to a flame with these things. It’s a wonder to me that all restaurants don’t have them! Book ahead and ask if one of these wonderful inventions can be nearby. Eat up!Maybe I’m a pyromaniac, but more fire comes next. Authentic wood-fired pizza,

found at Paninni at Mt Gravatt, is a lot of fun and guilt-free if it’s to warm you up.One word: coffee. I can’t just leave it at that, though. Hit up your local for coffee and cake of an afternoon. Top tips are

Careful My Tummy at Graceville, Café Auchenflower in its namesake suburb and

my mum’s top tip, the hidden café behind True Value Hardware in Newmarket.More drinks that warm you from the inside out can be found at your other local. Wink wink, nudge nudge. Drop in for a dark ale

or stout. If that’s not your kind of brew, try an Irish coffee.I don’t mean to be controversial here,

either, but exercise is up there with warmth-inducing activities. Laserforce

at Woolloongabba makes for a serious workout and you can relieve some stress there, too. And it may seem counterintuitive, but ice-skating at Iceworld Boondall is another great activity that everyone can enjoy and the hot chocolate in between laps doesn’t hurt.If you have a great idea to keep warm this winter, let us know using the hashtag #brisbaneweekly

“In the summertime when the weather is hot, you can stretch right up and touch the sky…” Well those times are a few months away and at the moment it’s all crisp mornings and clear blue skies. While you’re freezing at your bus stop in the mornings the moisture is disappearing both from the air and your skin at the same time. Add to that, skipping from heated room to heated room and you need to develop a plan of attack if you are going to remain your usual glowing self as the mercury drops.

The first thing we should be doing is overly documented wherever you turn so I’m just going to mention it once and

very quickly; drink water. There, I said it. Next!

If you are able to, (and your beauty therapist recommends it for you) book yourself in for a Microdermabrasion. I recently had a Microdermabrasion done by the wonderful ladies of Beerwah Hair & Beauty. Amazing. Acting as both a vacuum and an intense exfoliation at the same time it will rid you of that leftover summer skin and leave you with fresh, clean skin ready for your winter moisture attack.

It’s time to up the ante.

Next, take yourself out of the

aforementioned heated room, to your nearest department store and get some serum today.

Designed with smaller molecules to penetrate to the deeper layers of the skin, serum will give you a more intensive treatment. After cleansing, apply and let the serum soak in for a few minutes. Then follow with your moisturiser.

A general rule of thumb with your skincare products is thinnest to thickest. Water and cleanser, serum, moisturiser and eye cream.

Now ladies, there are your rules of engagement. Go forth and hydrate.

When you arrive at Olive, you aren’t 100% sure what to expect as it is attached to a house… however as you descend down the stairs through a gorgeous garden you land on a sunken deck that leads you to one of the most beautiful salons around.

A vintage stained glass window is a feature in this natural, chic salon that is known for their use of eco friendly products.

Ali went in, after a decade long fear of hairdressers after a bad experience, and was immediately comfortable with the stunning salon owner, Jade.

With a cut and some lightening, the final result is exactly what Ali was after.

We couldn’t recommend Olive Eco Hair highly enough…

In April 2014, I plan to complete one of the toughest climbs in the world, to Everest Base Camp, to

raise funds for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

I am grateful to be healthy and to have had many opportunities in life - opportunities that some children may never even hope to have.

Take Adam for example, who one day, at the age of 8, became a ventilated quadraplegic. Adam is now 11, and wished more than anything to be a movie star. The Starlight Children’s Foundation granted his wish by filming him in an adaption of one of his favourite movies, Harry Potter. They even arranged an actor from the series “underbelly”, Gyton Grantley, to give him acting lessons!

Imagine Adam’s face when this wish was granted. Imagine your own Childs face if they were in the same situation!

Starlight aims to grant 400 life impacting wishes to kids like Adam every year, costing around $6,000 each. They receive no Government assistance to do this. My aim is to raise $6,000 by next April, to create one special wish for a child who can never dream to have the life you and I have.

At present, through donations and fundraising activities, I have raised $3000. There are many more activities coming up, with every cent raised going directly to this charity.

Upcoming events include:

• Ladies Self Defence ½ day course

• Paranormal ghost hunting adventure

• Face and torso painting• A day at the races

To find out more about these activities, please like my facebook page – Donna’s Charity Adventures for the

Starlight Children’s Foundation.

To donate any amount (all tax deductable), please go to www.everydayhero.com.au/donna_pottinger. No amount is too small, and all donations are gratefully accepted.

Perhaps you can’t donate money, but have a skill or service you would like to donate as a fundraiser. If so, I’d love to hear from you!

Please help! Together, we can make a difference in the life of a sick child.

B efore you read any further, you should know: “Life without an iPhone” does not describe

a whimsical, technology-free week I undertook to challenge modern society and get back in touch with my roots. I just literally don’t have a smart phone. I don’t SnapChat, I don’t iMessage, I don’t update my status while I’m out and about. So if that sort of thing scares you, stop reading!

I don’t have an iPhone primarily because of the expense. I spend half as much money on my phone as I would if I had an iPhone on a plan and I have unlimited text messaging! I also don’t spend money on apps, super-cool phone covers or repairs to my iPhone.

I sometimes wish I had one. I feel it would make me a more efficient

person. Because my phone has no GPS, I have a Refidex (this is a sort of a paper-based, mute navigation system, for those who don’t know). Without Internet access on my phone, I have to plan ahead, checking addresses and transferring money before I leave home (because I got caught at the petrol station once with no money). I’ll admit I have photos of a few key bus timetables on my phone (Yes, it does photos).

Sadly, because I’m unable to post whilst on the move, I have a lot of redundant profiles on various social media platforms. It’s one thing to take a photo on my iPod and upload it to Facebook when I get home later, but my breakfast isn’t interesting to people at dinnertime (or in the morning, for that matter).

I promise there are advantages, though. This is not a plea for someone to throw me their old 3G. When I go to bed, I go to sleep. As it should be. This is because there is nothing, and I mean NOTHING, interesting on my phone. Being socially ostracized all day while I am out means that Facebook and my email are ten times more gratifying when I get home.

This is a good one: I can, quite literally, throw my phone at a concrete floor and it will battle on. While this means I never worry in those few seconds I take to bend down and retrieve it after dropping it, it also means I may never have cause to replace it.

Sadly, my mobile isn’t quite vintage enough to garner me any cred, but it definitely does make me seem more “down to earth”! I take great pride in the fact that it has already been superseded many times over. I don’t live in fear of the day it will go on sale to make way for the next smart phone. I’ll persist with what I have until my map book is out of date and we all communicate with pictures instead of words. I’m okay for now, though. ;)

So this mag is all about finding the hidden gems that Brisbane has to offer, and boy do I have one!

Now before I go ahead and tell you my secrets, you have to promise to keep an open mind, not scoff (to yourself, since I can’t actually hear you) and keep an open mind whilst reading what I have to say.

So here it is...Chris’ IGA at Carina…apologies, Chris’ SUPA IGA. HEY! What did I say about an open mind!? If you live in the area or in the vicinity of surrounding suburbs or have simply travelled along Old Cleveland Road on your way to Carindale or to the Bayside, then you will know exactly where I am talking about.

Located just back from the Corner of Old Cleveland Road and Gallipoli Road, Chris’ IGA has been around for an age, originally opened in 1955…now if being open for nearly 60 years isn’t a sign of awesomeness….then you guys are a tough crowd.

I recently discovered the true wonder of Chris’ IGA when I moved to Gallipoli Road in September last year, and being that it is just a 200m walk down the street, I have visited my old friend at least once a day. It has everything I could ever want in my local “convenience” store. In fact, it is more like a supermarket to be honest. Just a small, cosy one with everything you want and need.

But there are specific reasons that I am bestowing the title “ A Hidden Gem” upon it, and they are…

They have the most AH-mazing avocados, even when Coles and Woolies and even

some of the fruit shops have the best of a bad bunch, Chris’ has the best and ripest avocados…I don’t know how they do it but you rarely have to worry about getting a dud!

The pre-prepared meals aren’t your run of the mill dirty convenience meal, not only do they make wraps and sandwiches but Chris’ has a great range of lasagnes, quiches, stir fry, savoury slices, salads (they have an actual salad bar!!) and deserts. They even offer gluten free options like stuffed tomatoes and zucchini and haloumi slice, devine! Everything is made by the kitchen and honestly tastes like an amazing home cooked meal, perfect for the days when you just cannot be bothered to jump in the kitchen yourself.

You never have to spend a lot of time lining up, even at 5.30/6pm when the carpark is packed with people going every which way and people on their way homes quickly popping in before rushing home, you can be guaranteed the shortest line up possible, how they do it I do not know!

The Juice and Coffee Bar…holy hell, do they do a fab coffee!! AH-mazing - I don’t drink coffee a lot of coffee, but I will order a soy mocha from there any day…in fact I know of a certain someone who moved a couple of suburbs away and has been inclined to drive in the opposite direction to their work, just to get a coffee from Chris’…that is how freaking amazing it is. I don’t really love juice, being the fruit hater I am, but according to my sources, the juices are also as equally as amazing! That combined by the cheery smiles and first name basis the staff have with customers makes for a fabulous start to the morning.

Add to the mix some good old fashioned customer service (they will even offer to take your bags to the car for you in the event you may struggle to get there yourself) and you have got yourself “A Hidden Gem”.

By the way, I am aware that I am now old, instead of paying homage to some rad new bar, I am paying homage to a grocery store. And I said rad :)

Toodles x

A SUPA little hidden gem
